Is my mac mini capable of running a SSD
i have Mid 2011 Mac Mini 2.3 running lion and i would wanna know if i would be able to swap out the storage for a Solid State Drive
You don't need to change anything. The SSD looks like a hard drive to the system.
That said, I found that on my 2010 mini that it supported the SATA revision 2, 3 Gigabit/s standard. I initially installed an SATA revision 3, 6 Gbits/s, drive, which should have been backwards compatible. However, it only ran at SATA revision 1, 1.5 Gbits/sec. OWC said I needed to use the SATA revision 2 drive they sell, and exchanged the drives, no problem. The replacement drive runs at the max capacity of the mini, so it all works just fine now.
If you click on the apple on the left of the menu bar, about this mac, more info, system report, then Serial ATA, it will tell you what the link speed is, which is the max it can run. If 6 Gbits/s, that's SATA III, and if 3 Gbits/s, that's SATA II.

Power off and then back on the router
What happens when you enter the network's PW?
Try forgetting/deleting the network if necessary. To do that go to System Preferences>Network>wifi>Advanced and select the network and click on the minus sign

Looking for Mac mini that will run OS9
I'm looking for a Mac mini that will run OS9 for a legacy accounting application. If anyone has one for sale please let me know. Thanks.
For the amount of money you'd spend on VMWare, you could get a Mac that does boot Mac OS 9. Plus you need one just extract the ROM file necessary to run 9 on VMWare. Doing so, may be illegal, because the ROM chip is a proprietary design. Just get a Mac that boots into Mac OS 9, unless you know Classic is all you need. What version mac mini needed to run iOS5
What version of mac mini needed to run iOS5 and iCloud
In order to be compatible with iPad, iPhone or iPod devices running iOS5 and iCloud, your Mac Mini has to be running Lion. In order to run Lion it must have a Core 2 Duo processor.

Can a Mac mini 1,1 run a 27-inch monitor?
I think my old 23" Apple Cinema Display has finally bitten the dust, so I'm looking for a new monitor. This 27" BenQ sounds good, but will my early 2006 Mac mini run it?
http://shop.benq.us/ProductDetail.aspx?id=378
Part of my system specs are in my signature, but here also is info from System Profiler:
1.66 Intel Core Duo
Graphics Chipset Model: GMA 950
Type: GPU
Bus: Built-In
VRAM (Total): 64 MB of Shared System Memory
Vendor: Intel (0x8086)
So my questions are:
Will my Mac mini run this monitor?
If it does, will performance take a hit?
Should I drop down to the 24 inch BenQ model?
I would be very grateful for any advice. Thanks!Monitor support has to do with pixels and not size. Both
the 24" and 27" BenQ have the same pixels (1920x1080).
One just packs the pixels denser (i.e. more pixels per inch).
Although it will support such displays, certain activities at that resolution
may be pushing the GMA 950. That said, if it worked well with the
23" Apple display, the new ones should be fine. -
Will adding RAM to my Mac Mini make it run faster ?
Hey all,
Since I upgraded to Mavericks, I've started having two issues with my Mac Mini (mid-2011 edition, with 4Gb of RAM and an Intel i5 processor at 2,5Ghz)
1. I use FileVault so I need to login as soon as my machine will boot. Unfortunately, after the upgrade, the layout of my keyboard switched to US. So every time I login, I need to type my password in as if I had a qwerty keyboard. Apple is well aware of the issue which is reported on many forums but still hasn't released a patch yet. That's a nice middle finger shown at their customers, but I guess this is customers service the Apple style.
2. Next, I have a more embarrassing issue. My Mac Mini has become so slow that it has become almost unusable for many common tasks such as managing my photos in iPhoto or just surfing the web with Google Chrome. I noticed that doing almost nothing on my computer, I always at 3,5Gb and up of memory usage. As I'm typing these lines, I only have iPhoto and 4 tabs in Google Chrome opened and the "Used memory" line in the activity monitor says I'm using 3,99Gb of RAM.
So here is my question :
- Could the lack of RAM be the main reason my Mac Mini is extremely slow and often freezing on commons tasks (iPhoto and surfing the web) ?
- If so, would upgrading to 8Gb of RAM make it noticeably faster ?
Thanks !According to the image of memory usage you posted, the Virtual Memory is taking 5GB of HDD free space to run (whatever was on, in the image) and the physical RAM was nearly all taken, with 3.99GB in use. Most of the items in the far right side appear to be other usage, some in MB. Where is that being used?
{Not certain what to make of the other usages, because it is easy to forget what I saw when it isn't english. But I do understand several written languages and a few listened-to, even though I don't speak them. Even some dialects from Asia if I see the speaker. Except cyrillic Rus, greek, & a few others.}
Given the RAM is the least expensive way to add performance to a machine with hungry operating system and applications that also won't go unfed, this aspect and a good deal of unused or 'free space' in the hard disk drive both add up to better performance. Less RAM than optimal is a bottleneck, as would an overly full near capacity hard disk drive; when running on a slim margin.
Other browsers to consider are Mozilla-derived FireFox, Seamonkey, and iCab. Maybe Opera.
Good luck & happy computing! -
Mac Mini boots and runs very slo-o-o-wly
I bought my Mom a Mac mini with Intel Core Solo processor. I live in another city, and was last in front of the computer in February. I came for a visit yesterday and last night noticed the screen seemed to be frozen on the screen saver. I turned the monitor off and went to bed. When I came to look at the computer this morning it was frozen at a Mozilla Firefox upgrade install. I learned from my Mom that my sister, who is not particularly computer literate, used the computer last, about two weeks ago, to try and download some pictures. I'm writing for help, using my Powerbook.
I've spent the past five hours trying to get this mini to start and operate normally. From total shutdown to booted up and "ready" ( I use the term loosely) for use takes about 15 minutes. The first thing I noticed was the Logitech Bluetooth mouse was not working. I changed the batteries and now it seems to be working, although through every one of the approx. 30 reboots I've done today, the system initially cannot find the mouse, but manages to work after about four minutes of a spinning cursor. To launch an application, say, System Preferences, takes about five minutes from mouse click to mouse click.
I tried going to Disk Utility to try and repair the hard drive, but Repair Disk is grayed out. I tried using Software Update, figuring it would optimize the disk in the process. After downloading a list of available updates, I tried running only the Mac OS X update (OS X 10.4.8 now), but it broke with an error message saying the volume could not be updated. There is a file on the desktop named "file001.zip", which leads me to believe there is a corrupted file on the disk somewhere, but when I drag it to the trash I get an error message saying it cannot be deleted.
I pulled out the manual, and tried booting from the original install disk. I followed the instructions and tried repairing the disk from there, but I got an error message saying that wouldn't work either (memory getting kind of hazy; I've been at this quite a long time). In other words, nothing I try works. My deepest suspicion is that something is wrong with a volume, partition, partition table, partition map, or something like that. On the desktop is a disk icon named "Macintosh HD", and if I'm not mistaken it should have a user name instead, just like on my PB the same icon is named "Jims HD". I would be grateful for some other ideas or avenues to explore. I'm leaving town in the morning so if it's going to come down to erasing and reinstalling from the original disks, I'd better get started on that soon. Thanks.
JimThe easy bit first - the 'Macintosh HD' label on the drive icon is perfectly OK. You can change the name to just about anything you want, but by default the drive is called Macintosh HD, and doesn't change to the user's name (or anything else) without the user's intervention.
As to the other issues - it does sound suspiciously like the drive has issues, or the MacOS install is malfunctioning. Unfortunately, you can't repair the drive you boot from, so while you can run Disk Utility from the hard drive and 'verify' it, to see if it reports any errors, you can only repair it by booting from the original install disk that came with the system (or another viable boot volume if you have one on an external drive for example).
It seems to me that unless the system has already accumulated user data and files, the easiest way to deal with this is simply to insert the original install disk and reboot with the C key down, then do an Erase and Install. Note that this will delete all data, so if there is anything on the system of importance, it will need to be backed up. After the erase and install, and before installing any software, run the system for a while to make sure it's OK, including Disk Utility to verify the hard drive is fully functional.
If you prefer to take the diagnostic approach, the first step is to boot to the original install disk and run Disk Utility from there, with the repair disk option selected for the internal drive. You will likely need a wired keyboard to get the system to boot from the optical drive because with many BT/cordless keyboards, the driver isn't loaded until AFTER the point at which the C key boot modifier stops being recognized.
If you can't get the system to boot to the install disk, or if Disk Utility reports errors it can't repair, post again with as much detail specific to the issue as you can. -
Mac mini core solo running very slowly
Hi folks, long time reader, first time poster (sorry, couldn't resist):
I just got a nice shiny new core solo mac mini 1.5 with stock ram and it feels like it runs slower than my 450 mhz dual processor powermac. Activity monitor shows that if I try to run microsoft word and entourage at the same time I run out of free ram - is this normal? I'm thinking of upgrading the ram, but don't want to void the warranty if it turns out to be a hardware problem. Any ways that I could check it out?
Thanks
MikeYes.
Running Microsoft PPC binaries under Rosetta will take more memory. And the stock 512 meg is sufficient, but as with any modern Operating System, more memory means better performance.
I went to Best Buy recently and picked up these 2 sticks of RAM giving me 2 gigs of RAM in my Mac Mini Intel Core Duo:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7644196&type=product&id=1134699426 321
I replaced the preinstalled RAM in about 10 minutes. Undo the case (worst part actually), remove 4 screws, disconnect one onboard cable, replace RAM, reverse process.
It made a huge difference in just about everything, as was expected. It also seems to have cured my video bleeding problems too. -
MAC MINI late 2012 running slow on Yosemite.
here is the Entre check but I am not sure how to read it ... do I just need to Upgrade Ram?
The Mac Hasn't been the same since I tried to install open frameworks, I could get it to run so uninstalled, but after upgrading to Yosemite its been running very slow, takes a long time to open up software. ones its up and running its not so bad. I have reset the PRAM, taken off adware, cleaned up desktop, deleted duplicate and very large files, removed transparency from the toolbar, but its still slow.
Problem description:
slow running

I've been reading about all the problems new Mac Mini users are having with trying to expand their desktop using the HDMI port. ie: snowy screens, fuzzy text, blackouts etc etc. My Mini is due to arrive in a couple days and I have two Dell UltraSharp U2412M LED/ISP monitors waiting for it. I know one of them will work fine with a cord I already have: miniDisplay to Displayport. Is there any way to daisy chain them if I run into this HDMI problem the others are having? THANKS.
The monitors have: Displayport, DVI, VGA connections only.Mine shipped Oct 30 and I've had it running since Nov 6th. I took the original 4GB RAM out and replaced it with 16GB RAM. I also put a Mercury Elite 240GB SSD into the top bay using a doubler kit from OWC. I had an issue with the Disk Utility not liking the setup as two seperate drives. I ended up using Internet Recovery Disk Utility and did a Repair Disk on both drives and Disk Utility merged the drives into a Fusion Drive which was then properly recognized by DU. It all seems to work well, although I would have preferred seperate drives and more partitions, Fusion Drives are only allowed 1 additional partition, go figure. The HDMI has a bit of overscan with my 50" Panasonic Viera but the colors are good and the picture and fonts clear and distinct @ 1080p. I frequently use 720p for larger images so I can sit on the couch 15' away and read the text without binoculars.

How long can i keep mac mini (mid 2011) running?
hi, am new to the mac world, and previously i used to keed my windows pc for hours and days witout switching it off (for downloads and so), and i wanted to know, if it is safe to leave mac mini running for long times, like 2 3 or more days without switching it off?
sometimes when i touch the top of the mini i feel its hot, but am not sure if this is normal or not?
i have the 800$ version, with the 4g and 2.5cpu
it is in an open area with nothing surronding it
thanksThere are several listed here:

iStat is often recommended, though it's not free. MiStat, from the same developer, is pretty cheap:

Mac Mini Server is running slow on just one machine.
We have a Mac Mini OS X Server running in our workplace. We have FileMaker installed and we use the server for mostly just shared file storage and FileMaker databases. We have two iMacs on each floor - two upstairs and two downstairs. There is a switcher in each office to maintain a wired Ethernet connection, but today one of the machines is suffering from a really slow connection. All three of the other machines are fine, but this one iMac will take forever either loading FileMaker or connecting to the Server in Finder.
Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this? I'm thinking it might be the iMac but I can't think for the life of me why it would be so slow as the machine runs fine otherwise. Thanks!Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -

< Edited By Host >My deepest apologies. My brother sent this Mac Mini out for repair to a company called D T T systems. The problem was a broken plastic ram holder. When that was done during a failed memory upgrade. We paid 325.00 the or something for refurbished Motherboard. However, upon recieving it we found through running the serial number through apple it is a Yonah processor 1.8ghz board. When I have a 2.0ghz core duo forced on this board somehow. I sent it back two months later I was assured it was the proper board and simply it was not. I now know from Apple's Tech support. The same board. What a joke. I am truly sorry guys for the trouble. Somehow it registers those specs with processors and memory. Yet the serial is the completely wrong board. Worst company ever. You guys are the best.
