Is my Mac Pro being hacked?

Greetings,
I have a Mac Pro and I'm using OS 10.7.5
I encountered today on the sidebar of my Finder -above Devices- a new section that I've never seen before.
It contained an icon of a computer monitor (not a Mac, more like a PC) and a long thread of numbers and letters (I believe all lower case); and below that it read: as guest (like logged in as guest I suppose)
Big mistake of mine, I've been air playing movies from my computer to my Apple TV, and forgot to turn the firewall back on for a few days.
Did somebody gain access to my computer?
Any input on this subject would be greatly appreciated :)

If your Apple TV or another computer on your network was ever connected, it is likely to appear there. That funky number is likely to be a UUID (not intended for human consumption). The record of its connection will not be removed by powering off the other device, but it will be removed if you restart your computer.
If there is an eject symbol near it, pressing that will disconnect it and remove the trace of it from your computer.

Hi when is the New MAC Pro being released in the UK?

As soon as Apple announces it!

  • Has my Apple Mac Pro been hacked? Email followed by black screen.

I'm concerned that my Mac Pro may have been hacked.
I received a spam email this morning (not marked as spam) on my me.com address from Hwee Siang with the following subject:
Don'tBeLoser.UseViagraPro. and we obviouslywont be getting anything
    The message began with:
presentjeez yes but you said violet
Followed by a single link to a "getmedicsforuk" URL and concluded with:
to sit of a hot afternoonand.
Looks like randomly generated junk and I immediately sent it to the trash.
My mouse immediately locked up and then my screen started to black out in successive rows from the top.
I immediately hit the power button and forced a shut down, then restarted without my network connection. The report of the kernel panic is shown below and I note that it mentions a "BSD process name corresponding to current thread: Mail", which makes me wonder if the email triggered something?
The email is in my trash but, oddly, the content is now blank on my Mac Pro. Yet I can see its contents when I look at my me.com account online from my laptop.
My Firewall is on so I'm not sure whether to be concerned or not. Any advice would be welcomed.
Here's the first part of that panic report. The rest is available if needed. Thanks all.

Anyone got an idea on how to fix the problem?

I have 8GB ram on a late 2009 MacBook Pro, which has weathered good times and bad.
Reboots are killing me.  It seems every root program has to do its thing all over again.  (The same is true of my more recent MB Air, but of course, it has only a couple RAM that can't be built up, so the effect is less pronounced.)
I also note -- having "upgraded" to Mavericks directly from Snow Leopard -- that iCloud slows everything down.  My Contacts (formerly Address Book, a perfectly good name) are atrocious, always requiring some sort of dishing information in and out with iCloud and ... well, it's just not pleasurable.
But this is progress, right?  At least the battery lasts longer to compensate for more wait time.

  • Macbook pro being hacked

    Hi,
I think my macbook pro has been hacked, as my cursor was wandering around as if someone is remote controling my computer. I already changed my passwords, but how can I make sure that I haven't been hacked? what should I do?

There are several possible causes for this issue. Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried until it's resolved. Some may not apply in your case.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article, and also this one, if applicable. A damaged or defective AC adapter could be the cause, even if it's the right kind.
    2. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and delete all pointing devices other than the trackpad, if applicable. Disconnect any USB pointing devices. By a "pointing device," I mean a peripheral that moves the cursor, such as a trackpad, mouse, trackball, or graphics tablet. A plain keyboard is not a pointing device.
    3. Start up in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you restart as usual, stop here and post your results. Do the same if you can't start in safe mode. If there was no difference in safe mode, go on to the next step.
    4. Reset the System Management Controller.
    5. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    6. A swollen battery in a portable computer can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
    7. Press down all four corners of the trackpad at once and release. If there's any effect, it's likely to be temporary, and the unit needs to be serviced or replaced.
    8. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    9. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    10. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    11. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

  • Is my Mac pro being cleaned and updated when the little wheel turns?

Is the little wheel a good thing when it's moving? It seems to be cleaning or updating.Or is someone trying to hack me? Whoever wants to answer I'll appreciate it:)

If you have a 5770 gpu there is no DVD to boot from (one reason to have Lion).
If you clone your system, you have a safety net, and CCC can do a file integrity checksum on copies.
If you reinstall, don't install on the same drive, keep it for backup.
Later you may need or want to do a 3-way write (writing zeroes is not guarantee it will map out bad sectors which can be one reason it never seemed to repair itself) and reinstalling on same drive may only hide and be a temporary fix.
To so backup clone so you can have another drive to boot from and run system maintenance (and you could do a clean install too, only needs 20GB to setup an emergency system). Or you have 10.7.5 or later and then you have Recovery Mode.

  • Can my mac pro be hacked via icloud thru my iphone or mac pro?

ex wife had access to both. I have guest user disabled and im only one auth user yet when i enable icloud upon sign in now a guest user pops up next to my sign on. and it wasn't there before.

The "Guest User" (not a real user) is created by the "Find My Mac" feature so that someone who finds or steals the computer can access Safari and enable you to locate the machine.
If you ex-wife knows your Apple ID password, you should change it. The same goes for all other passwords.

  • Mac Pro SATA card

Hello to all you fellow Mac pro users
Recently I ran into a problem while upgrading my macs hard drive space and it wound up taking the life of my logic board. What I actually believe happened is that the controller card and thus my mac cannot read from any of the SATA or optical drives, as I can still boot from an external firewire and the graphics card seems to be in okay shape. Since purchasing a brand new mac pro logic board can be a pricey endeavor and one which I cant afford at the moment a friend suggested I install a controller card in the mac pros available pci-e slots, then through some sata cables boot my system and run the hard drives off that.
Anyone know if this is possible? Could I potentially save my beloved mac pro by operating my internal hdd's on a pci-e controller card?
If this is possible does anyone know of compatible pci-e SATA cards for my OS 10.5 2007 2xDual-core Mac Pro?
Thank you all so much for your time!

    Hi,
I think the odds of every port on the Mac Pro being defective is quite low.
This is what I would try:
    1. Insert a spare hard disk into the Mac Pro.
    2. Boot from the FireWire disk.
    3. Clone the FireWire disk to the spare internal disk using the restore tab in Disk Utility with the erase destination box checked.
    4. Boot off of the new cloned HD and verify if it is bootable.
You may also want to reset the PRAM and leave the computer unplugged for an hour if the tip above does not help.
If this does not work and your motherboard really does have all defective SATA ports a bootable PCIe card may be a possibility. However, you should know that most of these cards require the boot disk on the card to be cloned from an existing working system disk. You would need to clone from the FireWire disk to make the HD on the card bootable and you would need to verify that the Mac OS X Boot EFI BIOS is loaded on the controller.
Here are some Mac Pro bootable controllers:

    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/highpoint/3522/
As you can see most of the bootable Mac Pro controllers are not inexpensive.
    Happy Hunting!

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro wakes up from sleep with Mavericks.

Ever since I upgraded to OSX Mavericks on Tuesday, my early 2008 Mac Pro keeps waking up from sleep mode every couple hours. It goes back to sleep again on its own though after a minute, so I'm thinking it's some kind of new automated feature that I'm not aware of. With the Mac Pro being fairly loud when it wakes up from sleep mode, it woke me up three times last night! Is there some kind of option in the system preferences that I'm not aware of that can deactivate this new behavior? I usually only shut down my computer once a week, and keep it in sleep mode when I'm not using it most of the time, but I'm going to have to start shutting it down every  night now to keep it from waking me up throughout the night...

    Hello MARl0,
You may want to disable the Power Nap functionality, if available, in System Preferences -> Energy Saver.

  • Internal hard drive issue with Mac Pro

I work for two office that share information through a VPN. Each office has one Mac Pro being used as a server for data storage. The Pros have four internal hard drives (1TB each).
Hard drives in the Pro for OFFICE 1 were configured like so:
    HD1 - OS/Boot drive
    HD2 - Time Machine backup of HD1/DATA1/DATA2
    DATA1 - Data storage
    DATA2 - Data storage
Three weeks ago: Time Machine could not find HD2 and could not backup. I rebooted the machine and HD2 reappeared. However, after the reboot, DATA1 did not mount. I was unable to find DATA1 in Disk Utility. However, the drive could be accessed by all other Macs on the network. This machine was taken to the local Apple Store and we were told that HD2 was a bad drive and need to be replaced. We opted not to replaced the drive at this time and turned Time Machine backups off. We haven't had any problems with DATA1 since. (NOTE: During the weeks prior, the client machines intermittently lost connection with DATA1 and would have to reconnect)
Last week: OFFICE 2 - Mac Pro hard drives configured the same as OFFICE 1; however, HD2 was not used for TM backups. TM was turned on and set to backup HD1/DATA1/DATA2 to HD2 (exactly like OFFICE 1). The next day, TM could not find HD2 and backups stopped running. I rebooted the machine, HD2 reappeared, but we did not restart the TM backups.
Today: OFFICE 2 client machines have experienced intermittent disconnecting of DATA1.
I wasn't extremely concerned with the situation at OFFICE 1 as these Pros are almost five years old and in constant use. We plan on purchasing an external drive for the TM backups. HOWEVER, with a similar situation now being experienced in OFFICE 2, I am perplexed.
Could both machine be experiencing hard drive failures weeks apart? They were both purchased and installed at the same time.
Is there a known issue with TM and internal drives?
One difference between the two machines: OFFICE 1 is running OS X 10.8.5; OFFICE 2 runs 10.6.8
    Any suggestions/help is appreciated. Thanks!

Relying on TimeMachine has some issues, along with only having one, I use at least two swapping TimeMachine so that they rotate AND I clone every drive (volume actually) so I can swap drives if need be, especially useful for t he system but good for any drive.
Power issues in t he buildings?
There are some programs that will scan for and report and./or attempt to reassign a failing sector ("fail" is qualitative, is 10 write failures a fail? then the 9th is not but it is a "weak sector.") Some run in the background.
Mirror can be 2 or 3 ( I prefer 3, that way if one fails I STILL have a mirror array in place) where any failure is not acceptable, AND where the array data is backed up usually - less important  when using a three-drive configurations.
How old, when last initialized (zero), and is it showing spare blocks being used? that last is the most indicative of failed drive.
Rare but a bad SATA cable or power (seeing how the cables are tucked away) is only way generally for multiple failures in same drive bay or computer. Note: early on in 2006-7 there were reports of some customers having motherboard and trouble with a drive bay , and t he problems showed up early.
Often though it is NVRAM or SMC related issue trigged by something else, a USB cable or device that is faulty, even a PCIe controller that is the culprit. And replacing cable, keyboard, device, and resetting SMC and NVRAM (often NVRAM needed to be done multiple times, but never keep resetting SMC) - unplugged and when you connect back up, do not install anything other than system, keyboard and mouse and see if that helps.
With a drive, likely the drive in 85% or more, is fine, but the directory is not, or it needs to be erased to rebuild all the system partitions.
1TB is small for TimeMachine. 350% of the amount of data, and always have free space for a full backup set of all the data. T.M. will try and prefers to automatically backup any and everything plugged in and connected, rather than my preference which is ASK FIRST to add a drive to TM backup set, otherwise leave it out. 600GB of data and system would mean 2.5TB drive, maybe 2TB minimum.

  • New Mac Pro and Cores

The way that I see the new Mac Pro being advertised is that it is one processor with 4,6,8,12 cores.  Is this saying that cores are as good as processors now.  For example, my current Mac Pro has 2 Xeon quad cores, with a total of 8.  It seems to me that a dual processor with 6 cores would be better than a single processor with 12 cores, unless cores have taken on a whole new meaning.  I was under the impression that a core had to share resources within a processor. Maybe resources are no big deal now, but could someone try to explain this ?
    thanks

Take a look at some of Intel's literature on the E5 Xeon and E5-v2 Xeon chips at
    http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/xeon/xeon-processor-5000-seque nce.html
They've been pushing to integrate many cores on a single die for a long time now.  A big reason behind it is that by combining all cores on a single chip, they can drastically reduce I/O latency.  Makes sense when you think about it - all cores have immediate access to a single common memory bus and cache instead of having to split I/O across two or more chips for the same number of threads.
It also allows them to reduce the overall power demand quite a bit.
This trend has been going on for years now - the dual multi-core cpu machine was in some ways merely a stop-gap method to put more cores in a machine until they could figure out how to put more cores on a single chip.
Long ago now, places I used to work at loved SGI machines because they were one of the leaders at integrating multiple cpu machines into single massive shared memory systems, but the single greatest impediment to performance was the hardware and software that went into coordinating memory use and I/O across all the cpu's in the shared architecture.  Putting everything on a single chip immediately gets passed almost all of those limitations.

  • Headless Mac Pro getting stuck - need help with Crash Report

I have a headless Mac Pro being used as a server. It has recently begun to have problems such as slowing down for a few minutes with apps being slow or non-reponsive. It may serve pages, but the database or FTP may not respond. When logging with VNC (screen sharing) we may get a blank screeen or a screeen with lots of black squares and artifacts. If often clears up, but if fully black will usually require that I log on via SSH and reboot. It may be fine for a day and other days may slow down a few times.
The only apps are Abyss Web Server, Panorama database, CrushFTP (uses JAVA), and Backuplist+. Temperatures seem to be okay with the highest being the Nortbridge Heat Sink (167 degrees) and a memory module (163 degrees). The primary disks are a few months old and have over 200 GB of free space. I have done maintenance with Applejack, Onyx, and Disk Warrior.
It finally crashed altogether and I am not experienced at interpreting the reports so here is the crash report in the hopes that someone can help determine the problem:

    THIS:
    panic(cpu 1 caller 0x006376A4): NVRM[0]: Read Error
... Correlates with NVIDIA graphics card failure OR the use of two NVIDIA cards simultaneously in the same Mac Pro in 10.8 and later.
The Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250,  works in every model Mac Pro, and drivers are in 10.6.5 and later.
If you decide to do a Conversion of your Server from 10.5 to 10.6, it is not too bad. Just plan on a brief downtime -- I tried to keep it all running 24/7 by creating a new Servername for the new one, and that serious mistake still haunts me.
You should plan on such a conversion to get closer to current security updates -- 10.5 is not getting those updates, and you should really disconnect your 10.5 Server from the Internet.

  • My brand new unopened Mac Pro stolen

I bought a brand new Mac Pro and it was stolen before I even had a chance to open the box and use it. I've signed on to icloud to lock it and filed a police report but want to know if there's anything else I can do to recover it as I likely won't be able to purchase a new one with the amount that my insurance company will cover.

    Hello Swylaw
Sorry to hear about your Mac Pro being stolen. You have done about everything you can, though you can check with the article below for anything else you might feel is necessary to help you out.

  • New Mac Pro openCL card?

So if all of adobe and most other graphics applications rely on CUDA then why is the new Mac Pro being produced with the FirePro? That's an openCL tuned card. Is there a CUDA option? Doesn't make any sense at all to have a card in there that doesn't support the most popular graphics technology.

"So if all of adobe and most other graphics applications rely on CUDA"
Dave, what is your basis for saying the Adobe applications "rely on CUDA"?
Premiere Pro can use CUDA or OpenCL for its GPU acceleration. Details:

After Effects uses OpenGL for all of its GPU features except for one, which does use CUDA. Details:

    Photoshop uses OpenCL and OpenGL:
