Is my MacBook battery dead or is there something else going on?

My macbook has an "x" on the battery symbol and says "no battery available" on it. I have tried all suggestions I have found, like, replace battery, reset power management, reset PRAM and still have the "x". It wont even turn on now with the battery inserted and at teh moment I can only use it when battery is taken out and Im plugged into power using Magsafe adaptor. Laptop is about 2.5 years old. I did only notice this hapening after I installed SL but I dont know if that has anything to do with it. Is my battery dead and if so if I buy new battery will that fix it or could it be soimething else. I did check battery cycle count a few days ago and all was grand but I cant check it now as when I insert battery laptop turns off!

Try carefully cleaning the contact points on both the battery and the MacBook with a little bit of rubbing alcohol.
If neither of those do the trick, your battery is likely toast. If you are under the 3-year AppleCare, you can try calling and they may offer you a free replacement. If you get a replacement and the same thing happens--your MacBook shuts down with the battery in it or can't see a battery--then you have a much more serious hardware problem.

Assuming you are disconnecting from line power, when you say switched on, do you mean it was shutdown or in sleep mode? If sleep mode the battery will still drain because sleep still keeps some things active and the battery does drain a little. However, to go from 100% to 79% charge overnight is a bit excessive in sleep mode. Unless you have some processes set to activate over night by the cron file and do things like backup the system.
What are the statistics on the battery, the apple in the upper left corner, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Power...things like battery Condition, Capacity, remaining charge, voltage, current.

You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option from the Quick Links section in the top right corner of the iTunes homepage in your iTunes application on your computer.

ITunes 11.1.1 won't open even after OS update. Is there something ELSE I'm missing?

After I updated my iTunes to 11.1.1, it wouldn't open. I found something on these forums that had a link to an OS update to fix the problem. Downloading and installing the OS update took nearly 24 hours, and iTunes still won't open. Is there something else I'm missing?

first of all you want to back up all music files before you uninstall itunes. if mavericks wont let you uninstall itunes then right click on itunes in your applications folder, then get info, then go to the bottom and change all permissions to read and write. then close and try to uninstall and reinstall. if that doesnt work then this does :
open apps, go to utilities, open terminal and cut and paste or type in these 3 commands, hitting return after each one.
(first type) killall iTunes
(then hit return)
(then type) killall "iTunes Helper"
(then hit return)
(then type) sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app/
(and hit return)
after the last one you will be warned and asked to enter your password. do it.
once completed you will see on your itunes icon with a ? shadow inside it.
drag it off the dock and it goes poof.
then download itunes from apple.
if they wont let you download 11.1.5 itunes then use 10.7 Download it from Apple here.
and then install and upgrade to 11.1.5 from there. this is the method i used when my itunes just bounced after installing mavericks. it takes only minutes and your itunes will be as right as rain. enjoy.

So, I've been playing a bit with some short home video stuff - and now that we actually have some space to burn in iDisk - I would like to start uploading some video to our iWeb sites.
Upon my first attempt of doing such - I was met with a pop-up window in iWeb that told me the file was huge - and I would be best to convert it in QT Pro by way of exporting it. When I tried to do such via the export option - it was greyed out, that is unless I purchase the Pro version.
My question is - do I really need to purchase additional software to do this, and if so - is QT pro the program to go with, or is there something else that will be able to do what I need for the very limited amount of "video" that I plan to do?

Assuming you edited in iLife ,e.g. iMovie you can export to QT formats from there vs. paying for QT Pro, opening and then exporting from QT which will just do the same thing with some more options.
Idea: Open the file in MPEG Streamclip (free) and you can export to various iTunes formats without knowing a thing about exporting and pay zero for the privilege and probably do a better job of it. Use Streamclip version 1.9b3 , export to MPEG-4 and then press the iTunes button and pick a format you like. You will find even the basic to iPod setting at 320X240 will make very good quality videos that upscale to 640X480 well and are nicely small.

If you are looking for it in Desktop, it's normal that you feel like your Mac doesn't detect it. By default, OS X doesn't show external drives in Desktop, so you have to access to them from Finder. To do it, open a Finder window and choose your external drive in the Finder sidebar, under "Devices".
If you want to show the external disk in Desktop, open a Finder window, go to the Finder menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > General, and mark "External drives"

MacBook battery dead. Do I really need to buy a new one?

I have been using my old MacBook 13 inch, mid-2007, as my desktop accounting computer for a year now. The battery died, but no biggie, I just ran it on AC, it is always on a desk. Yesterday it would not turn on and I noticed the the battery had expanded (corroded?), plumped up and come out of the housing and popped out of the MacBook. It will not fit back in and also the MacBook will not turn on. Do I need the battery in (even a dead one) to power up with AC? Or is the problem something worse? I have spend so much money on all my Mac products, it's getting hard to justify pouring more money in for a new battery when I don't really need too...

I was disappointed to hear that Apple Canada would not stand behind the replacement of what I consider a faulty product.
Although my Macbook is past its one-year warranty period I feel its lithium battery had died well before its expiration cycle count 133 vs a typical 300.
Apple needs to improve its quality assurance and customer relations.

No one is arguing that a battery should last years. I realize it may be the popular opinion around this message board that those of us who are experiencing problems are simply wanting a free lunch. I would like to say that personally, I don't believe that's me.
Apple states that they feel their batteries should last 300 cycles while still being usable. I have less than 150 cycles on mine and it's acting strange. I get about 20 minutes out of a charge while working, 40 of just letting it sit there. They admitted problems with my laptop serial number (mine falls in the serial number range I read somewhere that was affected by the battery problems) and yet they state that they cannot do anything about it.
We don't want a free lunch. We feel that if we pay over $1000 for a mobile computer that it should be able to be, well, mobile. I'd gladly purchase a new battery for my laptop if I felt that it was old enough to be having problems. But frankly, my 6 year old junky Dell laptop has better battery life out of it's original battery than my Macbook has right now. I consider this a problem and I think that we, as consumers, are entitled to be treated with respect and have our concerns answered. I don't feel this has happened.
I even went so far as to ask the last time I called support if I could mail it in on my dime to be checked out. They said no. How then, am I ever supposed to get service? If I call and tell them I want to pay them to look at my computer and they refuse, I consider this a major issue.
Of course, this is just my $0.02.

I left my macbook sleeping and the dnext day It was out of battery, I pluged, and surprise, no battery detected anymore, just a X in the battery icon. I tried reseting the power manager, and pram, but not a chance. Think I just wasnt born to use a MAc!! I had so many problems with my macbook, it went 4 times to the tech support, and cant belive, I am just about to sell the remaining parts of this and buy a dell

I was with osx .6 since I did I clean reinstall, so I download the opdate to .10 and instaled the battery update, but didnt work ! Now I guess I will have to get take it to the tech again, and wait 1 or 2 months to the lazy brazilian tech guys get me a new battery. I dont blame apple, but how could they (and all the other brands) been developing their produtcs since the 70s and they still cant make a computer that just works! Without a hole bunch of bugs, uptades, firmware updates, reset ram and pram things, battery recalls. Thanks god those people doesnt are not in the car bussiness , or even worst, in the airport business.
I guess that I will sell the macbook just after the repair, I have been fooled since june 2006 when I bought this and it can go trought 1 month without a brandly new bug that takes me 2, 3 days studyng how to repair, plus 4 times I sent this macbook to the tech and they always "repair" it , it always come it a new defect. I am really upset, now I undertand why the poor and ungly windows is the major used os, you can get viruses and security issues, but not this kind of headeache. Macbook pro headphone jack think there something in it

I have a MacBook Pro i bought it 1 year ago, the audio out on it wont turn off and so the speakers on my Mac dont turn back on even when there is nothing in the audio out. I can see the red light is still on when I look in to the port. Intrestingly on my Windows side it works fine no problems so im thinking a software problem on lion is the cause as it only started happening after I updated. Any ideas or any fixs anyone knows ???

There is a switch inside the audio jack that may be stuck. Try gently inserting an audio plug, gently wiggling it, and then removing the audio plug.

The sort fields should generally be empty unless you've putting in custom values to sort solo artists by their surnames. You can apply common changes to thousands of tracks at once, just don't apply the wrong change because there is no undo.
It is a good idea to backup before undertaking large scale changes. See this backup tip for a suggested approach.
