Is my macbook pro able to read a mini disc?

Is my MacBook Pro able to read the mini discs?

If due to your activities, you need to read or use mini disks or irregularly shaped optical media, consider purchasing an external drawer-type CD/DVD drive that plugs into the USB or Firewire port. There are even some slimline bus-powered models that don't require an external power supply or power cord.

  • Macbook Pro won't read Windows XP disc

My Macbook pro won't read either my 32bit or 64bit windows xp discs for installation on bootcamp. The disc spins, makes a strange noise then ejects. It seems like this is a common problem. I have previously installed windows via bootcamp before and it worked fine. Normal cd's are read fine as well, just the windows discs won't read.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
first: put your XP 64-bit CD as far away from your Mac as you can. Apples BootCamp does not support it
Second: I assume corectly that these are Retail or SystemBuilder XP discs, not some Recovery CDs or manufacturere-branded ones, right ?
Third: insert the 32-bit XP CD while in OSX and check with the Finder if it can be read there (checking for the 'usual' folders on it: i386, Support, etc and files: winip51.sp2 etc.).
Fourth: some people round here have successfully used a 'standard' DVD/CD-cleaner disc with their Macs.
Fifth: try making a 1:1-copy of your XP disc. You can use SimplyBurns in OSX for this.

  • MacBook Pro refuses to read OS X discs included with the system

    Hey there,
First post, go easy on me.
I got a MacBook Pro last Thursday. Performance has been great, and none of the problems present on other systems appear to be present on it.
After several days of use, I had experienced a number of errors where the screen greys out, and a window pops up telling you that you must restart the system, upon doing which an error report is fired off. This, along with a little AirPort problem (it says it connects to my network on startup, but I always have to wriggle airport on and off to get it to really connect), have convinced me to reinstall the OS in case one of the firmware updates hit a wrong bit or something.
So I put my install disk in for the first time. It sits in the drive, no spinning or noise at all, and then it gets spit out a minute later. Oddly enough, the disc from my iMac is read fine on the MacBook Pro (although I am informed at startup that I can't use that particular disc to install). For the record, the MacBook Pro disc works fine in the iMac.
So does anyone have any idea what's going on with any of my problems? I'm going to call support tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone was familiar with this very odd disc behaviour. Data CDs and DVDs are read fine by the MBP, it is literally just the OS X discs that cannot be read.
Any help, comments, or things I should mention to support are greatly, greatly appreciated. I hate thinking I paid nearly 4k for a lemon.

That thread fixed my AirPort problem.
Also, I remembered that I did use my MacBook Pro OS X disc to install X11, and the only thing of consequence that I did afterwards was installing the firmware update.
Is there any way to roll back the firmware update so I can see if that caused this problem. It's the only thing with system-wide repurcussions that I can recall performing on the system.
The Firmware Restoration CDs from Apple's site only work if your firmware updater crashed or was interrupted in the process of update. . .is there any other way I can restore my factory original firmware?
Thanks in advance. For the record, I have experienced no kernel panics in 3 days. I'm wondering if maybe they were being caused by software issues (I've had a few while seeing how Rosetta handles things on the MBP).

  • I am using a Mac Book Pro. Now I am trying to read a LaCie 1 TB external hard disk. The MacBook Pro hangs while reading the LaCie external hard disk.

I am using a MacBook Pro. I have my movies stored on a Lacie 1 TB external USB harddrive. (42 Movies in HD - 538 Gb in use). When I try to read the LaCie external drive, my MacBook Pro is "hanging". Only a "hard reboot" helps to get my MacBook Pro up and running again. The MacBook Pro starts to read the drive, but half way he "stucks". I can read the LaCie drive without any problem om my windows machines, so the LaCie drive is O.K. Anyone familiar with this problem?

The drive is formatted NFTS, otherwise the drive can not handle large files under Windows. And yes, I can see the drive in Disk Utility.
I can even see the files (partly) untill my system is hanging.

No. The architechture is too old. I think Lion will be as far as you can go, as a guess without knowing your specs. But if the machine cannot run Mountain Lion then there is no way of doing it (short of replacing the mechanics which would be more expensive than buying a more up to date Mac)

  • Macbook pro won't read discs

macbook pro won't read discs. I have tried resetting the SMC & the computer itself. Any ideas

What exactly happens when you try?
Have you tried both DVDs and CDs?
    Try a cleaning disk.
Otherwise it would seem that the optical drive failed.

  • Macbook Pro will not read CD's.

My Macbook Pro will not read CD's. They have data on them, but they open up as blank CD's when I insert them into the drive. I know that they are not blank because on another Macbook Pro, they open up just fine. Some CD's will work while others will not. Why would a CD open on another Mac that is just the same?

I am having a similar problem.
Mine is a Mid-2009 model that I bought used on Craigslist... and now I notice the problems.
If I insert a commercial DVD, it spits it out after about 10 seconds. If I insert a burned DVD, it asks me if I'd like to write something to it.

  • MacBook Pro won't read audio cds

My MacBook Pro will not read digital audio cds.
It has in the past, but now it seems to have stopped reading them.
I have several purchased cds I would like to get on itunes, but I can't get it to recognize the discs.
I can hear it spinning several times, like it is trying to access the disc, then it ejects it without mounting.
It does not appear in iTunes, or anywhere on the desktop.
It will read and burn blank cds and dvds.
    I havde a 17" MacBook Pro, 2009, with a MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-868 drive.
Anyone have any ideas how to get it to work again or what the problem could be?

yes it could but probably not after testing ten different CDs right? Got the very same scenarion and asked the question again here, pls see https://discussions.apple.com/message/22423010#22423010

  • MacBook Pro Unable to Read Disc Prepared on iMac

I prepared a slideshow(900MB) on my iMac using iMovie.  Finalized the show in 1080p and exported it to a file in Finder.  Burned the show on a disc.  It replays beautifully on my iMac but my MacBook Pro will not read the file.  What am I doing wrong?  Thank you.

    Hi
    No not really - but
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named:
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort: from Craig: Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
    Yours Bengt W
