Is my media server serving the whole world?!

Hi,
I have a Thecus N0503 ComboNAS that I use to act as storage for all my digital music, video and photos. This is connected to my Time Capsule using gigabit ethernet and that in turn is connected to an O2 modem/router to the internet. I allow all the wireless Macs in the house to access Shared Folders and I have the iTunes server built-in to the Thecus switched on.
I am new to NAS devices and particularly all the acronyms used for the various ways of allowing access to FTP, NFS, SAMBA/CIFS etc and I was wondering if this ignorance is responsible for my problem.
Even with everything switched off apart from the NAS, Time Capsule and modem/router (so no interaction from any connected Mac) there seems to be a lot of hard drive activity as witnessed by the panel lights and noise coming from the Thecus. There are two drives installed currently set as a RAID 0 striped volume, but this couldn't be responsible for this amount of activity could it?
I'm just worried that I'm sharing all my media files with anybody who can connect to my NAS and would like a walk-thru to set this up as securely as possible. The modem/router is secure, as is the wireless network provided by the Time Capsule - at least I think it is - you have to use a password to access it!
Thanks for any advice you can offer.
Regards
Rich

You can check to see if its the outside world by disabling the O2 modem.
Other than that, i doubt you will get much help with setting up your NAS here.

I feel the same exact way! I am absolutely livid with how much I have been charged over these past few months. How is it I was informed by my school that Adobe would only charge us $9.97. After I signed up, I dropped the course which required us to have Adobe Cloud. Now I check my bank account and I see I am continuously being charged $32.04 every month. This is abdolutely outrageous! Now I'm calling trying to cancel it and they're telling me I have to pay an extra month. This is mind blowing! Something needs to be done.

  • Is Flash Media Server the software I need?

    Hello!
A client needs a Flash streaming software to best serve the following:
    750 Mb/s Internet bandwidth
    Average 7 minutes video length
    Average 1,100 video requests
3,500 video requests at peak hours
    99,9% SLA
Will Flash Media Server do the job or will I need something else?
Thank you very much for any ideas.

    > 750 Mb/s Internet bandwidth
Sure, FMS can handle 750Mbps of throughput
    > Average 7 minutes video length
Not an issue. It doesn't matter how long the videos are (although on a 32 bit OS, the file size has a limit of 2GB)
    Average 1,100 video requests
Assuming the server has adequate hardware and network resources, 1100 concurrent streams is realistic.
    >3,500 video requests at peak hours
A single FMS won't handle that many concurrent streams. You'd need to distribute the load across at least two servers for that capacity.
    >99,9% SLA
There is no SLA associated with the software. That's something your hosting provider would be responsible for, and it wouldn't apply to FMS... just to the server FMS is running on.

  • Home Media experience for the whole family

I'm new to using iTunes. I just recently got an iPhone 4s and even more recently; an iPad. I live in my house with my wife and 3 children.  We all have iPhones and iPads. I think everyone already has their own Apple ID account. I have a home wifi network and a Windows 2008 server with a file share of some .mp4 video files.  I bought iHome Server (software) and I like it because is auto tags the movie files meta data, and keeps iTunes up and running on the Windows 2008 server. Right now I have my iPhone, iTunes (on the server), and iPad all using my Apple ID and I can watch movies on the iPad and iPhone with the Home Share just fine.
HOWEVER, how do I allow my wife and kids to stream movies to their Apple devices on our home network?  My understanding in that Home Sharing requires all devices to use the same Apple ID account. Can I create a new Apple ID account just for the media home share?  Is it possible to setup the iPhones and iPads to use one Apple ID account for buying apps and such from the iTunes Store, yet another Apple ID for streaming from the home share?  Will it allow all of these devices to connect? If every iPhone and iPad in my house were to connect to my media share that's 5 iPhones and 5 iPads!  If I get all of this figured out, I may even include a couple of Apple TV's!
I'm trying to create a total home entertainment experience, and I'm just looking for how to accomplish this.

    Sorry guys,
after surfing through "More Like This" I found my answers

  • Where is the map of the whole world showing ALL my geotagged photos in the new Photos app?

After "upgrading" from iPhoto to Photos, I cannot call up the world map to locate where I took pictures. Is this feature gone?
It used to be if you clicked on "places" in the iPhoto sidebar you got this map. All the photos in one's library were represented by red pins. Since I organize my photos by location more than anything else feature such as date, this is a critical feature for me. Is it gone or has it been buried somewhere else in the program. (And no, clicking on the location data in each of the "events" is not sufficient because it only shows the photos in that event.)
Also, how do you geotag data after you have taken a photo if it was geotagged in contemporaneously?

There is no upgrade - Photos is a new and totally different application - it does not have a map view and currently does not have any ability to add or modify locations - iPhoto still exists as it was before
    Tell Apple what you want
In the meantime you have the option of continuing to use iPhoto (or Aperture) as before - they still work fine and will continue to until come OS upgrade breaks  them - maybe with enough customer input Apple will even agree  to continue to support them - worth a try

  • NSA USING SKYPE TO SPY ON THE WHOLE WORLD!

I am user of Skype. It was a great innovation when it was developed by its creators in Montenegro. But since it was bought by microsoft it has become a precious tool for the US in its ilegal & inmoral spying activities.
How can they say that OUR phone calls, emails, tweets, videos is THEIR property? Did WE give it to THEM?
The other issue is "privacy". It has been a lie all along from Skype, Microsoft, Google, etc. etc. All of them ARE IN BED with the US goverment as far as spying on all of us in concerned. Why are all these companies SO QUIET as if nothing is happening after the revelations of Mr Snowden? - Their business depends on the millions of people who have accounts with them! - It is time to look somewhere else, other internet companies who are NOT american and who may respect better our privacy.
HOW CAN SOMEBODY USE THE "CLOUD SERVICE" offered by american companies? Is anybody ready to sell himself / herself to the US for free?

  • The Whole World Can See "My Gallery"

I have 3 iweb websites all password protected. When someone goes into one of the sites with the passwword and clicks on Albums I found a problem after that picture page opens: at the top left is “My Gallery” that can be clicked on and all of my mobile me galleries on all the other websites can be seen by that person. Or they can just delete in the address bar back to my name and see the same thing. Anyway to get around that?

Seems as though you understood. Yes I created the photos into IPhoto and drug them into MobileMe below on the left pane in IPhoto. I then went to Iweb and used the widget to select the MobileMe album in the Iphoto gallery and put it in my Albums on the web site. Today it still says “undefined” on the website and I can not open it. How do you take that screen shot above? I could show you my settings. In Iphoto settings I have every box checked and I can still see my album on my Gallery page. Thanks for the help so far.
You said, "If they were created by iPhoto see if you can access them thru iPhoto." Sure I can access them thru IPhoto.

  • I think video/audio chat is down for the whole world right now

    Thurs April 17th
I video chat with people across america and even across the globe ALL THE TIME.
today, though I can text chat with iChat, iChat will not allow a single video or audio chat with anyone.
I have tried from different computers and different internet locations.
I wonder if the AIM network is just having a big problem today....does that sound right to anyone?
maybe better luck tomorrow, because this usually works ALL THE TIME and not a single setting has changed for me
    thank you

    Ralph,
I concur that the AV/screen sharing side of iChat AV is essentially broken (21:06 GMT). I have two different people I talk to regularly and neither are working today. The two parties also cannot talk to each other, which worked regularly before.
Using the "errorLogLevel 7" CLI switch, I see this which I believe is unusual (but I can't be positive it's the problem):

This log is repeatable for two different Macs on two different cable ISPs separated by thousands of miles.
FWIW, the test accounts (appleu3test0x) do work, but my perception is that the test accounts are computers with full public IP addresses and minimal (or possibly no) firewalls. A perfect test setup like that probably sidesteps the issues that are occurring.

    Hey Kristich,
Is the server that you have created behind some NAT, etc?
If you are using an IP of the form 10.x.x.x or 172.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x then these are private IPv4 address spaces and not public IPs(which is unique), and you wont be able access them from outside.

  • Turning Media Server on makes Lenovo EZ Media and Backup Center un-usable

I have a Lenovo EZ MEdia and BAckup Center. It was sent to me (under warranty)  to replace an Iomega model which failed.
If I turn on Media Server the device becomes un-usable. Logging onto the device and then selecting any operation takes 5 to 10 Minutes for each interaction. All windows network drives configured to the device become inaccessible.
When I turn it off then I can access all my windows networked drives again and I can log on and interact with the device without problem. Obviously anything which needs the media server function can no longer see the device.
I have the latest firmware 4.1.106.31982
This problem really needs fixing. I will be looking for another device if this carries on

    Hello wafitz
I seems you are experiencing a variation of this issue "Media scan causes the device interface to become unavailable".
I have also seen similar situations that happened when data is added to the unit when media server is enabled.
This could cause media server to potentially lock and cause performance issues to the rest of the unit.

  • Adobe Media Server DVR only 5 second recording

I have a strange problem. I have an application built in Flash Builder.
When I record to Flash Media Server I don't have any issues, it'll do DVR for as long as I want. But when I record to Adobe Media Server, the recording is only 5 seconds long.
    ns = new NetStream(nc);
    ns.client = new Object();
    userUID = UIDUtil.createUID();
    ns.attachAudio (mic);
    ns.attachCamera (camera);
    ns.publish( "demo" + userUID, "record" );
Later I can play the recording, timestamp says that it's a 5 second archive, but it'll really keep playing the recorded video.
    Same code, just different server.
Has anyone had this problem when migrating to Adobe Media Server from Flash Media Server? Using Amazon.

I'm having this issue as well. Did you ever find a solution to it?

  • Fixed Broken iTunes Connection with Firefly Media Server

    Hello, Everyone:
I figured out the way to fixed this.  The problem is not with your Firefly Media Server the problem is with iTunes.
Leave your Firefly Media Server alone and edit your iTunes.  Please follow instruction on the link I provided below to make iTunes work with Firefly Media Server again.  Since, I searched the forum and found no solution for this so I would appreciated anyone who  repost this please leave the credit to me.  Thanks.

  • NAS capabilities of the Time Capsule as media server after Snow Leopard

Why does Apple have to prevent the Time Capsule being used as a media server? I accept that it was never sold as such but pre-Snow Leopard it worked fine and was the ONLY reason I bought it in the first place.
I don't like Time machine. I have my own back-up procedures in place to take care of that. What I DO like is being able to have all my media in one place in my house instead of scattered across four machines. I also like that I could back up all the TC content onto another external connected to the USB socket on the TC.
It all worked well, gave me the security of knowing my media was being backed up daily and also freed up a lot of space on my other Macs.
With the advent of Snow Leopard Apple has rendered my music server as good as useless, prevented my ability to make scheduled back-ups and is forcing me to reconfigure my system with a proper NAS so I don't risk losing over 40,000 music files and 1000s of original photographs should the hard drive in the Time Capsule fail.
This will cost me well in excess of £500 and a lot of my time. Then I will have a redundant 1TB Time Capsule and another redundant 1TB external hard drive.
Why does Apple see the need to disable this functionality? If it doesn't support it how does it know it needs to prevent it? What is the issue here? All Apple seems to do is upset a lot of people who have made an investment in Apple equipment only to have the primary reason they bought it killed off.
Am I wrong here? Have I made some kind of configuration error that means my TC just disappears from my desktop and my iTunes stops playing?
    Cheers

Okay, I've actually posted about this issue before but was simply told that 'Apple do not support the Time capsule as a media server', but this is my experience...
I have a modem/router supplied by my ISP that distributes wireless at 'g' standard - fine for our iPhones, but all our Macs are modern Intel models capable of using the 'n' standard.
So I bought the Time Capsule for two reasons - one to give us that faster wireless service and two to act as a media server by consolidating all the music, video and photo files we had in duplicate and triplicate across the four machines in our household.
The TC was connected to the router via gigabit ethernet and then via ethernet to my 3.06 iMac from where everything is managed. Wireless 'n' standard access at 5GHz was provided to our laptops and as expected every machine could 'see' the TC on the network.
I then moved all our media files onto the TC with no problem and added a 1TB external drive to the TC via the USB port. I then discovered that Chronosync installed on my iMac could see the TC and the TC Back-UP drive so I used that to copy everything over and set up a schedule to ensure that regular copies of new files were made.
I then added both the TC and the TC Back-Up to my login items so they would automatically mount on the desktop upon start-up. Restarting the machine proved this worked fine so I proceeded to point all the Macs' iTunes libraries to the new location on the TC and set them NOT to copy the files over when adding to library.
This all worked fine and all the Macs could access and play iTunes, surf the internet etc. except in the distant corners of the house. To help coverage I bought four new Airport Expresses with 'n' capability and set each one to extend the wireless network created by the TC.
Then I added an Apple TV and linked that to the TC network too. This again was managed via iTunes on the iMac and set to automatically synch new recordings made via my EyeTV.
This whole set-up has worked flawlessly for over a year and until I installed Snow Leopard.
When I first restarted after installation on my iMac I really noticed nothing. The TC mounted as usual and when I started iTunes my Apple TV began to automatically synch. Everything seemed to be operating normally. However when I double clicked the TC icon to access my files I got a warning message saying 'The alias “TIME CAPSULE” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found.' I was given the choice to delete or fix the alias or just go Okay. When I chose 'fix' a new Finder window opened where the TC was clearly visible in the left column and it said I was connected. But in the next column both the TC and the TC Back-Up were greyed out.
I then dragged the TC to the Trash on my iMac and I could hear it spin up and then it finally moved.
I then opened a new Finder window, selected the TC and it came up with a preview calling it a 'Sharepoint' and no longer like a normal hard disk.
Meanwhile I realised that because iTunes was no longer 'seeing' the TC it had defaulted to the Music folder in my Home folder and was now busy deleting all my Apple TV stuff because it couldn't find the originals.
This has been going on for several weeks now and I am increasingly frustrated by trying to find a workaround. Meanwhile Chronosync no longer makes scheduled back-ups because the drives don't mount on start-up - well they do as aliases but that's no good if they're not linked to the originals!
What bothers me is that all this stuff worked like a dream under Leopard - indeed many others have similarly used Time Capsule as a media server and must no doubt be seeing similar issues to my own.
If I can't continue using the TC this way then Apple have essentially removed the very functionality I bought it for and thus rendered it useless.
Of course if there is a glaring configuration error or even an adjustment post-Snow Leopard that needs to be made then please tell me. However the original reply to my older post of 'Apple do not support the Time capsule as a media server' does not leave me with much confidence in getting this resolved any time soon.
    I have everything crossed however...
    Cheers

  • What's the best way to setup a media server/central storage for all of my?

I was wondering what the best way to achieve a central media server for all my iTunes content + iPhoto's, calendar syncing and contact sharing is? This is what I currently have:
iMac 20" Aluminum + External HD Backup (kids)
    Macbook Black (wife)
    Macbook Pro 15" (me)
    Airport Extreme 802.11n (obvious)
TimeCapsule 1TB (wifi backup for wife/me)
I would like to replace my PC in my office with a brand new Mac Pro Nehalem 8-Core, 8GB Ram, and 4TB, and replace my PC laptop in my living room attached to my tv, with an Apple TV.
I want to centralize all our Photos from vacations, etc. Music, videos, movies, that are currently split up over wife's macbook, kids imac and my macbook pro onto my soon to be purchased Mac Pro.
I want to be able to stream everything from my living room via Apple TV for when guests come over, dinner parties, etc. (plus I love apple and it keeps things clean)
I'm currently using MobileMe to sync all of our Calendars and Contacts with my main account, which is great, but MobileMe doesn't sync to family members accounts =
What would I need to do to centralize all this onto my future Mac Pro so that everyone has access all the time when they are home and the key here is, modify/update/change from their machines and sync it back/update it on the Mac Pro.
Also, I'm hoping Snow Leopard has some changes to iTunes to make this a little more possible, since we're right around the corner from this release. I don't really want to spend an additional $900+ on Snow Leopard Server to have to achieve these results, but if it makes it easier, and does the job, then I guess I might. This is all speculation though, since it's not out yet. I'd like to get this all sorted and setup within the next month.
I was considering a Drobo, they say they can throw up iTunes Server but, I appreciate everyone for reading this, and taking the time to respond!
    Thanks!

I'm in the process of setting up a smaller (and cheaper) but somewhat similar setup to what you want to do, so maybe one example might help point you in the right direction. My needs consist of a centralized location for data storage, which will include iPhoto libraries (I keep two separate ones), iTunes (which I also want served to the home theater system), something other than my laptop to play internet videos and downloaded content on my TV, all with ideally the lowest cost and energy use possible.
My solution was the new Mini with a FW800 external drive as the server/media hub and Airport gigabit as the network hub (it also handles the backup drive).
FW800 is fast enough to saturate a gigabit ethernet link, so I don't consider that much of a bottleneck. The Mini then has iTunes running at all times with its centralized library on it; it is hooked to the home theater via HDMI-DVI video and optical audio, so it can play music and also handle videos when desired; Front Row with the Apple remote is close enough to an AppleTV that I think it handles that well, and it's more full-featured than an AppleTV. It can further be used to display photos/slideshows/whatever on the TV for guests or such, or to surf from the couch with a wireless mouse/keyboard. You can also toss in an EyeTV for $150 and use that as a DVR if you feel like it.
When I want to edit photos or such on my desktop, the gigabit link is fast enough that I can run iPhoto without noticing any significant slowdown. Its also usable over wireless, though I have a dangling extra network cable to plug into a laptop for full gigabit speed if need be. iTunes, of course, shares its library, which can be played from any of the computers in the house if so desired (iPhoto can do that too if you just want to display).
If I REALLY wanted top speed (though I've even done video editing in iMovie via ethernet without issue), I could use a third party synch app (I like Sync) to mirror any of the content from the mini server to a local drive; this works fine with anything but multi-way synching, such as address books being modified in different locations. I'd probably try to set up one of those Mobile Me clone systems or use a 3rd party app if I needed to do that.
Again, maybe this isn't powerful enough or "synched" enough in terms of local storage for your taste, but the advantage is that a Mini uses a minute fraction of the power of a Mac Pro, so you're saving a lot on electricity if the computer will be powered up at all times as a server, and it's also a lot more full-featured as a home theater media hub than an AppleTV. And, heck, the thing is about as well equipped as my old top-of-the-line G5 tower for a 5th the cost and 1/15th the power and noise.
