Is my motherboard fried?

Hey guys, so i finished building my computer but i have recently come across some problems. the computer would start to hard freeze, and the display would stop working completely (as if there was no video connection). and so i unplugged the power to my graphics card while the computer was on (i know I'm an idiot). now the computer can hardly run. it stops working after about 10 minutes. my mother board is an a88xm-e45 and i was wondering if the board is still okay or if i will need to replace it? i disconnected my only hdd and when i turn the computer on, the bios screen won't even show up

Hi
Doing what you did wasn't smart indeed. But I think that something was bad since "new" and caused such issue(s) at first place. Probably removing a GPU this was made it worse? Please see >>Posting Guide<< before we go any further.
Also try clearing CMOS ( >>Clear CMOS Guide<< ) with power cord and battery removed.

If your external drive does not have an independent power supply, you may wish to consider a couple of lower-cost options before tossing the drive. Bus-powered drives have no external power source and must get all their power from the computer. They can exceed the computer's USB energy budget.
    Cheapest option:
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
This gets power from two of the computers USB porst sna can provide enough power to wake up an under-performaing bus-powered drive.
If you don't have enough ports to use this, try the next cheapest option:
Newer Technology 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub with Power Adapter for Mac & PC
Such a hub has a an independent power supply to make up for wahat the comptuer fails to provide.

  • Motherboard fried -- replaced with new computer  -- now need to salvage catalogs from  old drives

Rather than replace the fried motherboard on an old box running Windows XP, I bought a new box running 64-bit Windows 8.1.  I have my two 11-year-old internal sata drives attached to the new box with USB enclosures, plus my old 300 MB usb drive.  I have fresh backups of 'My Catalog', 'My Catalog 2', and all the 12,000 photos.  I also appear to still have download rights to my original copy of Adobe Elements 9 (thank you for that, Adobe).
I copied the contents of the old C drive (now 'J:') onto the new C drive under AppData/Local/Adobe/Elements Organizer/Catalogs and Pictures/Adobe/Digital Camera Photos and then stopped, realizing I didn't know what I was doing.
What I DON'T have is the ability to 'repair' or optimize the catalog or to view the catalog to identify original drive letters for the second internal drive and the external usb drive (now they are 'K:' and 'L'), nor do I know what else besides 'My Catalog' and the photos need to be on the new C drive.  Or if I even have the option of moving to the new C drive, as opposed to continuing to run off what is now 'J:'.
So, I'm thinking that if I just install Elements 9 again, a)  it won't find any of my photos b) I will probably have empty albums, since I haven't found any 'My Collection' files and c) I will lose all my version sets.  Or  maybe I'm just being too pessimistic.
Ideally I would like to put everything on the new C drive and just get rid of the three old drives, but the main thing is to salvage the version sets and albums.
Can anyone advise me on how to set the drives up so that Elements will find my version sets and albums when I do a fresh install of Photoshop Elements?

I was indeed too pessimistic.  I purchased a copy of Elements 13; installed it; went into Manage Catalogs and pointed it at My Catalog; and then took the options to convert, repair, and optimize.  Lo and behold, within seconds it  had found all my folders and albums and everything was there as it should be.

  • Motherboard fried ???

hp g60t-200 notebook : When switched on, the lappy goes 'brrrrrr'.... and then blank (black screen). It remains in that state for like a lifetime. Unfortunately, the warranty has also expired. Showed it to a technician, he says the motherboard is probably fried (though i did never put it in an oven).
#The isssue is that the screen remains black from the moment i switch on my laptop.no response whatsoever.
Any geniuses out there who can suggest any other alternative (even hope will do!!!) apart from me digging into my pocket for a new motherboard.

    Hello KrazyRanger,
Welcome to the HP Forums! I hope you enjoy your experience!
I understand you are experiencing issues with the motherboard. Unfortunately, it is broken, and there is no supported method of salvaging it. I apologize for the inconvenience.
Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thanks for choosing the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Liquid damage, motherboard fried. Hard drive ok?

Dog peed on my MacBook Pro, motherboard likely fried.  Should my hard drive be completely ok?  Ok to put it in another computer?

The odds there are not as good. If the moisture created a short, the battery may be fried.  But, take it out and test it.
Note, if you have a unibody MBP, you probably will need a #0 Triwing driver to remove the battery.  This is not a common tool found in a hardware store.
    Ciao.

  • Qosmio G30 - Motherboard fried again

After 9 months, the motherboard died, still in warranty so replaced it.
Now another 9 months, no longer in warranty it has died again.
Is there any hope of some help from Toshiba?

    Hi
    Thats a sad story :(
But I think the Toshiba ASP in your country should be able to help you
If you have a hardware issue with your notebook, you have to contact always the local Toshiba authorized service partner.
Explain the guys the whole story and ask for the further handling.
Unfortunately but this is everything what I can suggest
    Good luck

  • IMac G5 Motherboard fried

    Hi,
I have a friend whose g5 machine needs a new motherboard. I'm not a computer professional, but I'm pretty adept - have done various hardware repair and replacement on PC's and memory upgrades on Macs - and I can't help but think that this is a repair we could do without a lot of sturm und drang.
Is this replacement - of a motherboard - something I can do myself? Is it cost prohibitive? What are your thoughts and suggestions for getting the replacement parts? Thanks!

Welcome to Discussions - if you are fairly adept, careful and can follow instructions take a look at [this|http://jimwarholic.com/2008/07/repairing-apple-imac-g5-motherboard.php] and see if it helps.

  • Dead motherboard and power supply.. now what?

I am pretty upset that my iMac had a meltdown. It worked wonderfully and perfectly until last week. The Apple store told me that the motherboard fried and so did the power supply. They told me it wasn't worth it to replace the parts since it would cost over 1200 dollars to replace. I seriously do not have money for a new computer and I do not have the credit rating that could help me finance a new one.
I've had the computer since 2004, you could say that over 4 years of perfect performance could be good, but the computer was a gift from my dad who has recently passed, and I don't think it's going to be easy for me to give it up. If I were to buy the parts myself and do the install, would be it be worth it? My questions are ... where can I buy the motherboard and new power supply? Can I buy directly from Apple and install myself? Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to Discussions - sorry about your loss, there certainly are places that sell replacement parts for your Rev A - look at [welovemacs.com] to get an idea of prices. Buying from Apple usually means higher prices, but you can check with them as well, part of the $1200 was surely labor costs.

  • Laptop fried and replaced before uploading album purchased by iPhone iTunes

I purchased some new music from the iPhone iTunes interface. Before I was able to synch this to my laptop the motherboard fried. HP was unable to obtain a replacement motherboard, so the whole laptop was replaced. I had a backup of the rest of my iTunes that I transferred on to the new system, but when I connected the iPhone it blasted all of the songs without first uploading the purchased content. Am I hosed? Why would this happen? Where was my "hey, you have purchased content to upload" message?

    Hey redhead_kara,
It sounds like you may have choose to erase the contents of the iPhone and sync with iTunes before transferring the purchases.
The iTunes Store support group may be able to re-grant the download.

  • Killer Motherboard? (v. long post)

Please bear with me, this is a long story. First, my setup.
    - MSI Neo4 Platinum SLI (Diamond board, Platinum SLI BIOS, that's the way it came to me)
    - Enermax 535W (dual-rail +12V, each at 18A)
    - XFX 6600GT PCIe
    - A64 3000+
    - 2x512MB Corsair
    Background
After about 5 months of use, my 6600GT blew up. Before that, I would have the occasional messed-up texture in HL2, but by and large the card was performing fine. Temperatures were also okay. I never OC'ed any part of my system.
One fine day, Guild Wars simply froze, and I had to hard-reset my system. I rebooted, and from then on, things got from bad to worse. Every Direct3D or OpenGL app would freeze the system within 1-3 seconds of entering 3D mode. Windows would freeze after anywhere between 1 minute to several hours of operation. Occasionally, the BIOS POST screen would be completely messed up. Of course, I tried all the software solutions (drivers, Windows, etc.). Memtest86 ran flawlessly. Within a couple of days, things got even worse. The BIOS POST screen would display garbage *every time*.
I tried a friend's X300SE on my system and it worked beautifully. I stress tested it for several hours, and everything was fine. Of course, you could argue that the X300SE draws far less power than the 6600GT, but considering the fact that I have a 535W Enermax PSU, I did not think I had a shortage of amperage. After this experiment, I sent my card out for an RMA, and am now awaiting its return.
    The Story
Now, the real issue. When my card started showing its first signs of frying (i.e., after every game started freezing within a 1-3 seconds of starting up), I opened up my case and looked for anything loose. And lo and behold! The infamous SLI switch card was loose. The clip had fallen off, and the card was jutting out of the horizontal at an angle, although it was still well inside the slot. I had no idea how long it had been that way.
Figuring that I had discovered the cause of the problem, I retrieved the stupid clip, pushed the card back in, and re-affixed the clip. (footnote 1) After placing the switch card back into its original position (footnote 2), I powered up my system, and...
Phhhhhttt! Something tripped! The PSU cut itself off immediately, and to my horror, I could smell the familiar stench of a short circuit. The smell was not too strong but was definitely there. Unfortunately, it disappeared before I could localize it. I went over my entire system for a couple of hours trying to locate any signs of burning or de-colorization, but couldn't find anything at all.
I then did the unthinkable -- I reset my PSU and powered my system back up. And... everything was back to "normal", as it had been before I had opened up my case. My graphics card was still toast: games would crash, Windows would freeze, and the BIOS POST screen would be garbled. After a couple of days, I plugged in my friend's X300SE, and you know the rest of the story.
To summarize, there were 3 incidents, which could be completely unrelated to each other, or intricately connected:
    1. My graphics card fried.
    2. The SLI switch card was loose.
    3. Something in my system tripped and toasted when I "reseated" the SLI card, but everything seemed to be working perfectly fine afterwards.
So, the big question for me -- and the reason I am posting this on this particular forum -- is this: Could my motherboard a killer? Could it be the one responsible for frying my graphics card? Somebody at NVnews suggested that I should RMA the motherboard along with my graphics card. I did not feel that that was necessary. I did not find anything wrong with my motherboard per se, and so I did not think that it was technically or ethically correct to unnecessarily RMA it.
But now, with my card about to return, and -- with a brand spanking new BFG 7800GTX in my hands right now -- how can I be sure that my motherboard is safe? My original plan was to stress test the board with the replacement 6600GT for a few weeks before plugging the GTX in, but even then, how can I be sure? Have you guys ever had any incidents of a motherboard frying a graphics card, specifically an MSI motherboard, and even more specifically, the most expensive MSI motherboard available on the market?
Any hints, clues or advice would be greatly appreciated. What would you have done in my situation?
    Footnotes
    1. Back then, I had no idea that the clip is not supposed to hold the card forcibly, the card is supposed to "click" into place on its own. Not that it would have made any difference, had I known -- even after finding out about this, I was unable to seat the card properly. I can't seem to understand the technique.
    2. My mobo arrived with the SLI switch in SLI position. I had pried it out and pushed it in NON-SLI position, but again, I had held it down forcibly with the clip. My system worked perfectly fine in this state for 5 months.

If you would like check out the Re-Energize from MSI and you can probably get a new motherboard that will be compatiable with 2 7800 gtx,  a transistor or something is in the way so in the long run you might want to do this anyway just check out www.msicomputer.com and its listed there.  You send your motherboard back you get a new one that is able to work with 2 7800gtx.

  • I am having a serious issue with all my apps disappearing/not working- user profiles

i will list the things i have done in the past 24 hours, hopefully one of you knows what happened...thank you in advance
first off, my situation- was that i bought a macbook pro(about a year ago) with lion or snow leopord it is software 10.7.5 i dont know what the guy did but when he sent me the computer the username was off and so was the home folder, i changed the username with ease but the home folder stayed tbd and i couldnt figure out how to change it. well it finally got on my nerves enough from looking at it that i wanted to change it today that put me into the situation i am in. Here is what i have changed:
-I added a second profile as to see if i could change the home emblem file named tbd to what i wanted.  This worked or so i thought.
    - then shared and permissions showed tbd(me) so i wanted to change that also so i went into systempreferences>users and groups>login options>network account server and clicked join/open directory utility.  this is where i believe i went wrong i read in a forum that this is what you needed to change to make it look how i wanted it to.   under active directory it still had this guys name gtmb04_evan so i changed it to my name like the forum said, well his name is back up even though i changed it. and this is when everything stopped working.
symptoms:  all my applications act like they are newly downloaded and make me set them up.
    - my home screen is nothing like it was before, no apps are on the desktop and the bar along the bottom only has the basic ones
    - i tried to take the second username off of administrater which made me restart my cp(all my stuff looked normal until this, but didnt work)
-my launchpad wasnt showing any apps they simply looked blank
    - my firefox along with many other apps wouldnt even start prior to reseting and gave me a message with something like couldnt find or access user profile( i forget the entire message)
please please help me, i hate this right now and have no idea what to do, all my files are still under my name, that when i thought i changed tbd- it apparently just made a new folder under users which didnt show up until the restart, i do not have a time machine set up on this computer because i hated the lion setup and couldn't get it to operate correctly

i had one mac and spilt water on it, the motherboard fried so i had to buy a used one...being in school and all. it is a MC375lla

  • I am having a data excess usage issue with my Jetpack although I did not use the VZW network at all.

Background: My home does not have access to landline internet and I am relying on a Verizon Jetpack device rather than satellite cable for internet access.  Within my JetPack wireless network I have several devices connected, iPADs, PC’s, printer, etc. (up to 5 devices can be connected with my system).  Recently, I had one device within my immediate wireless network that I needed to transfer data via FTP to another local device within my immediate network.  The receiving device FTP’d data from device (198.168.1.42) to local IP (address 192.168.1.2).  To understand the data path a Trace rout for this transfer is 198.168.1.42 (source) to 198.168.1.1 (Jetpack) to 192.168.1.2 (receiver).  Note that the VZW network ((cloud)/4G network) was NOT used in this transfer nor was any VZW bandwidth used for this transfer (of course less the typical overhead status/maintenance communications that happen regardless). Use of the VZW bandwidth would be something like downloading a movie from Netflix, (transferring data from a remote site, through the VZW network, into the Jetpack and to the target device).  I also understand if ones devices have auto SW updates that would also go against the usage as well.  I get that.  My understanding of my usage billing is based data transfer across the VZW network.
Now to the problem: To my surprise I was quite substantially charged for the “internal” direct transfer of this data although I didn’t use the VZW network at all.  This does not seem to be right, and doesn’t make much sense to me.  Usage is should be based on the VZW network not a local Wi-Fi.  In this case, Verizon actually gets free money from me without any use of or impact to the VZW network.  Basically this is a VERY expensive rental for the jetpack device, which I bought anyway.  Considering this, I am also charged each time I print locally.  Dive into this further, I am also interested in knowing what is the overhead (non-data) communications between the jetpack router and devices and how much does that add up to over time?
Once I realized I was getting socked in bandwidth, as a temp solution I found an old Wi-Fi router, created a separate Wi-Fi network off the Jetpack, but the billing damage was already done.  Switching each device back and forth to FTP and print is a hassle and there should be no reason the existing hardware couldn’t handle this and charges aligned with VSW usage. Is purposely intended by Verizon? Is this charging correct? And can I get some help with this?
Logically, usage should be based on VZW network usage not internal transfers.  All transfers between IP addresses 192.168 are by default internal.  Any data that needs to leave the internal network are translated in to the dynamic IP addresses established by the VZW network.  That should be very easily detected for usage. In the very least, this fact needs to be clearly identified and clarified to users of the Jetpack.  How would one use a local network and not get socked with usage charges?  Can one set up a Wi-Fi network with another router, hardwire directly from the router to the Jetpack so that only data to and from the VZW network is billed? I might be able to figure out how to have the jetpack powered on but disable the VZW connection, but I don’t want to experiment and find out that the internal transfers are being logged and the log sent after the fact anyway once I connect…. A reasonable solution should be that users be able to use the router functions of the Jetpack (since one has to buy the device anyway) and only be billed for VZW usage.
Your help in this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • Photoshop CS2 won't reinstall and open properly - help!

My laptop motherboard fried and so I'm trying to reinstall my CS2 Creative Suite (legal copy) on my new laptop.  Since my old serial number is no longer supported, I downloaded the creative suite from the links provided on the Adobe website.  All of the other programs have opened just fine, but when I try to run Photoshop, I get an error that says "Your Adobe Photoshop user name, organization, or serial number is missing or invalid.  The application cannot continue and must now exit.  And then it closes.  I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Photoshop, and have also tried downloading the just the Photoshop file from the website, but it never presents me with an opportunity to put in a serial number, which the other programs did.  I don't know what else to try.  I tried to talk to the customer service people on the chat, but that guy just told me to come on here - not helpful at all!
I didn't think that this would be a 4+ hour project just to reinstall one set of programs, let alone everything else that I lost when my computer fried.  So frustrating!
    Any help appreciated!

Each application or suite has its own S/N.  You cannot mix them, nor can you use the s/n for a point application on a suite or vice versa.

  • External hard drive from pc to mac please help

My HP motherboard fried but the hard drive was fine. I extracted it, and put it an external enclosure and made it external. I plugged it in and it shows up on disk utility, but now I don't know what to do. I want to be able to transfer my old files to my new Mac. It says disk1s1 (the part with all of the files) isn't mounted. Should I mount it? will this erase my old data? Thanks

    Hello jnorris5
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If the drive shows up in disk utility then it should show up in Finder (desktop). If it does show in Finder then all you have to do is drag and drop the files that you want to the Mac.
As the other poster stated you may be running NTFS file system on the ext drive, this is not a problem if you're only reading or copying the files. If you plan on writing to the drive with your Mac then you'll need to either format the drive (once you get the data off) to OSX Extended (Journaled) or FAT. You can alternately use a third party program such as paragon or macdrive, suggested by the other poster.
But if all you want to do is get the data from the drive to the Mac then just plug it in drag and drop the files.

  • IPod Touch and a New Laptop...among other problems

Hi there - I've got kind of a mess on my hands, and I'm hoping someone is willing to help me sort it out.
I've got an iPod touch that I received as a gift from my parents Christmas 2009 (Model MC008LL) and it is working beautifully - no issues there - and I want to sync it to my new laptop (which runs Windows) and transfer my music here as well. The only article I could find (this one) a) doesn't apply to the iPod Touch and b) would require me to sync it to the old computer, which presents a new challenge entirely, as the old computer's motherboard fried about six months ago and we lost everything.
In addition, I'd like to know if there's a way that I can keep the music that's on my iPod as mine when I leave for college, which is in roughly a month. Everything was bought under my parent's account and the iPod itself is registered under my parent's account, and I'm afraid that if I try to sync it with a new computer and my new iTunes account, Apple won't let me keep my music. I don't want my music to be tethered to my parent's computers and accounts, you know?
To sum up, I'd like to import my music from my iPod Touch to my new laptop but:
the only articles I could find on the Apple website didn't apply to the iPod touch and if they did, I couldn't follow them anyways
iPod Touch is not synced to any computer as old computer is unsalvageable/paperweight status...iPod Touch still runs old version of software (4.2.1)
iPod Touch and all music within is registered under parent's iTunes account, which may present problem?
Is there anybody who has any idea of where I can start? It'll be much appreciated!

You'll likely need the help of some 3rd party software to assist you with copying the contents of your iPod Touch back to your new iTunes library.  See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering several possibilities.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2452022?start=0&tstart=0
As for the iTunes account dilemma...  Since the music was purchased under your parents account, you'll need to authorize your new computer/iTunes library to play and sync this content with your parents account credentials.  From there, you can start to use your own account, but make sure to authorize your iTunes library for that account as well.  You can do this by choosing Store -> Authorize This Computer.
You cannot transfer purchases from one iTunes account to another, so as long as you have or want to listen to the music you purchased with your parent's account, you'll need to have your iTunes library authorized to do so.  Sorry.
