Is my old PowerBook G4 dead?

I'm on a trip in the U.S. now and left my older PowerBook G4 with a friend so we could iChat while I am away. He said it wouldn't start up and I got him to startup with the original MacBook G4 install disk by using OPTION+start and he is seeing the message shown in the screenshot here:
http://lerner.net/doug/PowerBookG4Error.jpg
Is there anything that can be done?
Thanks,
doug

Yes, I agree I am confused.
Sorry - I get mixed up with the names.
Here are the computers and discs in question.
(1) My 17" MacBook Pro from late 2006 that I am using even as we speak while on travel in the U.S. It's also my main work computer. The original install discs are there in my house in Tokyo and I have the retail version of the 10.5 discs with me in case of an emergency. This is an Intel MBP.
(2) My older 17" PowerBook G4 that my friend is using while I am gone to contact me by iChat. That's the one that seems to have broken. We don't know where that computer's install discs are. That is a PPC model.
(3) An even older 13" Mac of some kind. I don't think it's a G3, but maybe it is. I think it is a G4. It was more or less contemporary with the 17" PowerBook G4. That computer is on loan to another person so it is not available. But the install discs for that computer are what my friend found.
So both (2) and (3) are PPC. But I'm not sure of what OS X version is on the install discs for (3) or whether it will install on computer (2).

• I have an OLD PowerBook G3 and it won't work now.

I have aquired an old PowerBook G3 400 Mhz with FireWire and it has been sitting collection dust for quite a while. It will not turn on at all. I have the batter in the left bay and the right bay has nothing, not weight saver or anything in it, and it is plugged in over ac. I have tried 2 power adapters, an apple one and a 3rd party one. The computer does not do anything, no lights or noises. The lights on the battery don't light up either. Does anyone know what could be the problem?
Thanks

If none of those helps, remove the main battery and try the list again. Operating without a battery may be helpful for bench testing, but your powerbook is intended to run with a battery in place. Without a battery, it may be more likely to sustain damage due to power fluctuations. If the main battery does not recharge itself, it may be dead and require replacement.
The PowerBook also has a recharging PRAM backup battery (unlike the iBook which has only the main battery). You may have to leave it plugged in overnight (without the main battery in place) or longer before it has any hope of recharging the PRAM backup battery. If the PRAM backup battery does not recharge, it may be dead. It is more convenient to have a working PRAM battery for daily use.

Hi 1283ar.
Unfortunately, iOS 7 is too hard to push for the iPhone 4 and therefore has a lot of effects turned off to try to get it to run as smoothly as possible.
However, it becomes better and better with each update coming but it's hard to do anything about the hardware on an already released phones.
If you still have trouble or think they are too hard. My tip is, if so, to restore your iPhone 4 and make a clean setup with no iCloud backup. But all your photos in a photostream so you can access it later.

• Where can I find OS 10.4.11 to install to my old PowerBook G4?

Hello.
I have an old Powerbook G4 on which I had installed OS 10.4.11,
but I can't seem to find the cd to reinstall. It is running a bit slow as it has been many years, and I wanted to format the hard drive and reinstall the same OS.
I also have Mac OS leopard, but i think it might be too heavy for this old machine.
1. What is the latest OS I can put on this powerbook so that it still runs smoothly?
2. If i want to install 10.4.11 where can I find it?

Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store *but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753)*. For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.

• Need to move Mailboxes from an old Powerbook to a new desktop iMac G5.

I already asked on some discussion group but somehow lost it and have to re enter my question.
I have an old Powerbook G4 that I had to use for a few months but now have my new iMac G5 desktop Intel Core and need to copy all the Mail in mailboxes onto a flash drive so I can then have it as an archive backup but also be able to copy it to the new computer. Thanks for any advice given.

Your reply is appreciated.
iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2014) Processor 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5 Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 is what I have.
Hardware overview:
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac 14,4
Processor Name: Intel Core i5
Processor Speed: 1.4 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores 2
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache 3 MB
Memory: 8 MB
Boot ROM Version: 1M144.0179.BO6
SMC Version (system) 2.21f92
Yup, you're right. Among the mound of literature I have, says there was a G5 in 2005
Nevertheless, it would be helpful to be able to copy the Inbox from the antique PowerBook G4 to the flash drive.

• Migration from old Powerbook to new iMac

I have just bought a new Intel 20" iMac. I have moved Documents, Applications and Music from an old G4 Aluminium Powerbook (running Leopard) to the iMac but which ever way I do it, be it via Migration Assistant, Wireless or via Ethernet cable, the size of the Hard Disk on the iMac increases by double. I also now have the following very annoying things happening, such as tons of Alias' on my Hard drive, .DS_Store files absolutely everywhere and a Microsoft AU Deamon appearing everytime I restart the iMac.
Can anyone advice me on how to identify the space consuming files, how to get rid of them and how best to get my files, music, photos etc from the old Powerbook onto this iMac.
Kev Bate

Brody,
Thank you. You have saved me from going crazy as everyone (including the Techies at the Mac shop where I bought the iMac) were adamant how easy it was to migrate using Migration Assistant. So I was getting a complex that whenever I brought something across from the Powerbook that the hard drive on my iMac was doubling in size.
I took the iMac back to the Apple shop and they restored the disk back to the original settings. I am now transferring files using traditional & physical means such as external hard drives.

• How do I get OS 10 back onto my old Powerbook G4?

A DVD got stuck in my old Powerbook G4, so I followed some online instuctions to take it apart, access the DVD drive and fish out the stuck DVD.
I then followed the process to replace all the relevant parts and leads etc.
But when I switched it back on, it has reverted to OS 9.2 - which takes me back, and is not where I want to be!
So does anyone have any advice on next steps?
Does it suggest I have put the machine back together incorrectly and missed something?
Or should I just stick in the original OS X disks into the drive and reload? ...what could possibly go wrong?
With thanks and best wishes
Rob

Have you tried holding down Option at boot to see if you get OSX as an option?
Or (I'm hazy now on OS9) through the Apple Menu > Set Startup (I think).

• Cannot install Airport on my old Powerbook G4 - BTHomehub network quotes "password incorrect" although it isn't. Same settings work OK on my iMac, G5 and other Powerbook G4. Is there a fault on the Airport card?

I have recently re-installed 10.4 on my old Powerbook G4 with success apart from the Airport network.
Using BTHomeHub (which I use successfully on my other Powerbook G4, iMac and G5) I get the message that the password is incorrect, which I know it isn't as the other macs are OK. Is there a fault with the Airport card?

Hi Frank, is the BTHomeHub using WPA2 encryption perchance?
The original 802.11b Airport card cannot do WPA2, and may need a firmware update to do WPA if the earlier of the original Airport cards.

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac. You should be able to set a password for it. Save it. Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer, I suppose, back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity. As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support''
don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine and go for it. You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups of your stuff.

• How do I transfer my contacts from my old Powerbook G4 to my new Macbook Pro?

how do I transfer my contacts from my old Powerbook G4 to my new one Macbook Pro?
new Macbook Pro is operating on OSX 10.8.2
When I save it as an export then try to open it on the new computer it wants me to delete all my current contacts before it will import.
What happened to MERGING?

On the PowerBook G4, open Address Book and choose File > Back up Address Book...
Save it to your Desktop or directly to the MBP if it is already connected. Otherwise copy the Address Book backup file to the MacBook Pro. Email is also an option.
On the MacBook Pro, open (double-click) the Address Book Backup (abbu) file:
Contacts will launch and display the following:
Click Replace All which will do what it says.

• Decided to upgrade from an old PowerBook G4, mostly for eyesight issues. Bought a new Mac Mini and hooked it up to an Apple A1267 Cinema Monitor. I cannot even figure out how to turn them on. Help please.

I am exhausted just getting to the point of being allowed to ask my question. I recently decided to upgrade from an old PowerBook G4 that we have used for years, and am using now. I bought a new Mac Mini and a reconditioned Apple A1267 Monitor that was working beautifully when hooked to a slightly newer PowerBook in the store. Both the Mini and the monitor are plugged in, and attached to each other but I feel light a dolt. I cannot even figure out how to turn them on or even get a power light to come on. Can someone help me?

How is the Mini coonected to the momitor?
Does the power button n the mini not work?

• How to set up remote access to my old Powerbook?

Hello.
I would like to access some files from my old Powerbook from my new Macbook, as I always forget files I wind up needing later (I just recently bought the Macbook) , and don;t want to load everythign which was on my Powerbbok onto my new computer. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Start up the powerbook and immediately hold down the T key, until you see the Firewire logo moving on the screen. This will place your powerbook in "Target Disk Mode". Using a firewire cable plug the powerbook into the Macbook, the powerbooks disk will then mount on the Macbooks desktop and you can copy any files you want across.
Hope this helps.
