Is my Powerbook crashing?

My powerbook today, for the first time, all of the sudden went to a blue screen and restarted. I lost a Pages document I was working on and all other programs (maybe 2 were open at the time) were shut down. It just went blue for about 5 seconds and then rebooted. No warning or spinning beachball, just went right to the blue.
Afterwards, OSX popped up a message that Mail unexpectedly quit even though it was still open and I was still working in it.
Any ideas what's going on here? Do I have a virus?
Thanks

That's all good news.
I would feel safe you don't have a virus and would try to find some other correlation. Once in a while I'll accidently run a thumb over the power button that will shut it down in two minutes if not cancelled.
Specifically what was plugged in and what exactly was going on at the time.

  • Powerbook crashes with DSL modem voyager 105

    Hi,
I use a Voyager 105 USB modem for broadband access. About every second or third time I use this, my Powerbook crashes with kernel panic and requires a reboot. Any ideas how to solve that?
    Thanks.

    Powerbook 12   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

As suggested by Daniel and Gareth, USB modems like the Voyager can be prone to driver issues. Problems can sometimes be resolved through updated drivers from the manufacturer.
However the best way to resolve the problem is to invest in an ethernet modem/router instead as these do not require any drivers. Most of them also allow you to share the internet connection with other computers on the network.
Assuming you are UK-based, there are many vendors who can supply perfectly capable ethernet-based products for comparatively low cost. Amongst them are ADSL Nation and DSL Source (I have no affiliation to either of them except being a customer).
You can also get further information on ADSL products and services from ADSLguide, which also has a dedicated Apple section (with some very helpful and knowledgeable people) on their discussions forum.

  • Powerbook crashed during 10.4.7 install now won't boot!

    Hi everyone,
This is what happened to me on Powerbook G4 17" 1.5Ghz - hope my solution helps someone else... although solution is same as what others are saying - just more to let you know my symptoms
    I installed in this order:
    1) did the 10.4.7 update (64Mb)
    2) powerbook crashed during the update (black/white - you need to turn off your powerbook by using the power button)
    3) a sinking feeling hit my stomach
    4) rebooted - no go - on grey screen again reboot using power button
    5) again
    6) again
    oh sh*t
    1) So put in install disk and run disk utility
    2) oh no - not good
    3) repair permissions - ok that works
    4) repair disk - no go - catalog something or other errors which can't be fixed
I have downloaded the combo update on another PC - burnt the dmg to a CD
then safe boot the Powerbook (hold down shift)
then after like 10-15mins log in
    put CD in
    open dmg
    do combo update
    then restart
then it restarts itself again after the grey screen
and now it's working - well booting and logged in ok
    time to test
    l8r all
    Jase

Michael, I don't think Apple needs to withdraw the
update at all. The fact that the Combo update fixed
your problem just means that it replaced something in
your system that was missing before you updated with
the decimal updater. The decimal updater will update
a perfect 10.4.5 to 10.4.6 but if there is something
missing in your 10.4.5 the decimal update won't
replace the missing part but just update the parts
    that need to be updated.
So do we assume bad package/patch management.. or maybe insufficient preinstall checks? I think as so many people are having issues apple should withdraw this patch, and only supply the combo patch!
I'm sorry to harp on here, but apple need to get q&a in order. These things shouldn't happen, and if they do,the recovery steps should be clearly defined (and no, re-install isn't recovery, that's last resort stuff). Apple really need to address their many deficiencies in the recovery department... The OsX dvd install disc recovery has some serious issues, like /tmp being read only (that ones a basic!), single user mode not supporting wireless keyboards... and requiring a meta key not on standard usb keyboards to access it...
Oh, and if it's not too much trouble, can someone from Apple please acknowlegde this problem, and at least say they're looking at it... would be nice.

  • Powerbook crashes at least once a day; time to jump ship?

Hi, my powerbook has been crashing a lot lately, and it's scaring me a bit. I replaced the hard drive in December because it failed, and I've been using a new HD for about 4 months. This problem only showed up in the last few days. It's strange, the screen just goes black and I can't get it to wake up again, but it responds to a manual restart. This is an error report from the latest crash.

    Hi Wei343, sorry Bgreg,
never mind the light sensors for the time being. I would urge you to try someting else 1st. I didn't put it in my last entry, because your crash report didn't mention anything about the lower memory slot. Is there supposed to be an SODIMM in the lower slot of your machine? Then I'd rather call it the lower sl*t, forgive my language.
The crash report you have shown us more recently tells us lower slot memory has failed.
As mentioned elsewhere in this forum, a PB 1.67GHz 15" ALU which I have recently repaired acted up in the same way- no startup chimes and frequent very serious kernel panics after which it would only start up after resetting the PMU. Sounds familiar?
What I would want you to try is simply remove the RAM from the lower slot and restart. If the system is acting normally after that, startup chimes and all, you are having the same problem as I had.
On this forum (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1951188&tstart=0) and via rumours, I found out that with some models, the memory controller chip is faulty, and sometimes does not or only recognises some of the memory in the lower slot, thus causing kernel panics if. Sounds reasonable: the machine loses RAM it wants to read from in order to keep the system running, but there is nothing to read from! Leaving this slot empty will be the cheapest workaround, if you can live with less memory as I can. My machine has been rock stable even running at 100% CPU usage. Just go easy on multi-tasking. Otherwise you will need to repair or replace the motherboard- or patiently run tests with other RAM in the lower slot: I've been told sometimes some rare SODIMMS will work.
Sorry if this seems a bit outlandish, but it solved the problem with my PB!
Good luck and keep us posted.

  • PowerBook crash and now Mail won't open

My PowerBook G4 crashed hard some time ago, and since then Mail hasn't worked (I defaulted back to Eudora because I was swamped, but now I finally have some time to try to deal with this). When I open it, I get as far as the menu headings (File, Edit, etc) but no windows and then get the spinning beach ball of doom and have to force quit. I'm guessing some file got corrupted when everything crashed.
I've browsed the forum a bit for advice, and here's what I've tried so far:
Repaired both permissions and disk from the 10.4 install disk (no disk errors found; some permissions repaired but nothing mail related so far as I could tell).
Tried opening mail with the shift key down (no luck), with Airport off (also no luck), with Airport off and the shift key down (still nothing), and in SafeBoot mode (and again nothing!). So I don't think the problem has to do with a particular message that's corrupted or anything (which seems to be a common problem).
Created a test account and opened Mail from there- it got me at least as far as the first "set up Mail" window, though I didn't bother to take it further. (Should I?) Suggests a bad prefs file rather than the program itself?
I've tried looking for the crash log, but when I look at the ~Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Mail.crash.log file the only crash listed is from about 2 years ago. Is there someplace else a crash log would be hiding?
I haven't played with deleting prefs or other files yet; I'd like to make sure I've covered all my bases before I have to start recreating account info and stuff.
Other info: I'm using Mail 2.1 and OS 10.4.8; it's an IMAP account. Let me know what other info would be helpful.
    Any advice would be welcome!
    Lisa

    Hi Kenichi,
I dragged that folder to the desktop; it didn't help. The Cache/Mail folder contains folders numbered 00 to 15, each of which also contained folders 00 to 15, each of which contained several cache files. Does that sounds normal? (Should I bother putting it back?)
What's next? The prefs, or something else?
    Thanks!
    Lisa

Hold down the Sleep (or lock) button while holding the Home button. Keep holding them down until you see the Apple logo on screen. Do it for however long it takes to see the logo (like up to ten seconds). Let go when you see the logo and it will reboot.
If that doesn't do it then something has gone seriously wrong but I doubt a Safari crash could have been the cause of that kind of problem.

  • PowerBook Crashes When Picked Up

My powerbook has been crashing lately. While it has been crashing under normal circumstances, it seems to crash when I pick it up, or move it. I have also gotten an error a few times asking me to "reboot" in a few languages. I think I may try a clean reinstall tonight....Any other suggestions?
I really hope it's not hardware related. This computer is two years old, hardly used, and I have had nothing but hardware problems as soon as my warranty ended.

When you say "There is software control on its sensitivity", do you mean I have the software, or their is software I can buy?
If it is part fo the OS, could you tell me where I can find it?

  • Powerbook Crashing - maybe caused by bad ram?

I have a Powerbook G4 1.5Ghz that came standard with 512MB RAM. I got a 1GB Samsung stick, and it worked fine with 1.5GB RAM for a while. About a month and a half ago, I got repeated Kernel panics, and eventually my RAM total as reported by the Activity Monitor dropped to 1GB, even though I had both sticks still there. System profiler identified two sticks of 512MB, even though one was 1GB. The machine runs off of each stick individually just fine, but after testing them both alone, I replaced them both, got them recognized as 1.5GB, and then had two crashes within half an hour. Running Techtool Deluxe shows no problem with either stick. Could it be something with my connectors?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Pull the Samsung stick and run your 'book on the stock 512 for 36-72 hours, switching slots about half way through. If you don't get any crashes in a couple of days, it's definitely the new RAM, no matter what software is reporting.
Report back, and please award points if I was helpful.
    Cheers,
    -K

  • PowerBook Crashes frequently..

I have owned a PowerBook G4 for little over 2 years now and it now crashes quiet frequently. It did this for some time before but when I took it in to Apple to get fixed they said it had to happen infront of them before they could fix it. After realizing the best thing to do would be to just video tape it crashing I brought it home and it didn't crash for about another three months. Now it crashes 5-10 times a day about 3 days a week. It will pop up with the "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?" message and then if you hit cancel, it will still shut down. Sometimes I don't hit cancel and it will shut down anyway, other times I hit cancel and it doesn't crash. The worst is when it turns itself off and then when I turn it back on it just does one solid beeeeeeeeeep and the little light that is illuminated when it is "sleeping" flashes real quick a few times.
Does anyone know what could be causing this?
    Thanks,
    Henry

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
If you haven't already, you should run the Apple hardware test. Insert the first OS X DVD that came with your system (may say AHT Version x.x in small print), reboot and hold the option key down. Choose Apple hardware test and follow directions. Choose the extended test. If you have TechTool Deluxe or Pro it can do the same testing. Does it point out any issues?

  • Powerbook crashes!!!!!?????

my powerbook is nearly 2 years old now and it is more frequently crashing. It usually happens when I shut my mac closed (so it sleeps). When I go to open it again nothing appears on screen and I can only restart it by holding down the power button.
Is there a way to prevent it happening?

What happens if you put it to sleep using the command from the Apple menu instead?

  • 12" Powerbook Crashes When Moved

I have a one and a half year old 12" Powerbook. It is crashing when I pick it up to move it when it is on. I get a message that says to hold on the power button to reset the computer. I don't know if the hard drive has a sensor that protects the drive from damage when the laptop is moved, but was wondering if anyone has had similar incidents.
    12" Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

While it may be the AirPort card this is a bit of a
    leap.
Ok, well if the kernel panic message has a row of F's at the bottom then we can be sure. Alternatively if the original poster copies and pastes the last entry in panic.log we can deduce it as well. But since I've never seen this problem resulting in anything else (and this problem crops up a couple of times a month), I'm confident it's a poorly seated AirPort card.
Hmm... a colleague of mine who's just had to replace
his hard drive after bumping the machine may
    disagree.
Unfortunate. However if you knock a hard-drive while it's on then expect the heads to crash into the platters, and consequently expect some kind of data loss. The PowerBook hard-drives are surrounded by rubber (they are mounted on a 'float') so he must have really whacked it.

  • PowerBook crashes when running on battery power

Having problem with a 17" powerbook.
computer runs fine with AC plug in, but when running without AC, it will freeze or kernal panic when launch any application. Ran disk utility and everything seems to be fine, even with MacTestCD... everything passed (Memory and HDD all passed).
I did permission repair & diskwarrior... it still crashes without AC...

    MacTestCD? How old is that?
Never heard of MacTestCD. Who makes it? You should only use a utility made for the operating system in question. Otherwise kernel panics could happen if they attempt to repair things they don't understand.
    Is your data backed up?

  • Powerbook crashed & recovered

This happened about a month and a half ago - i was in Bolivia and i believe because of the power fluctuation it crashed. But it recovered... my screen just had a bunch of black strips with texts on it stating that it had fatally crashed. Now, it seems like when i'm running applications, especially Final Scratch, it is having a hard time working 'fast'. Would more memory help? I did a disk utility check, but it verified and repaired permissions - i don't get an option of repairing disk.

    MellyB04:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Try Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
    Good luck.

  • Powerbook crashes multiple times every startup--os x?

    hello,
i have a powerbook g4 17' in pristine condition which i would like to sell. i reformatted it and am about to put it on ebay, but everytime i turn it on, it freezes either on the gray screen with the apple or right after/or during finder loads all of the desktop items. it usually takes 3-5 reboots before it works fine, as fast as ever. does it have to do with os x 10.4.8 (completely updated)? has anyone else had this problem?
    please help,
    morgan

    Morgan,
Try doing an erase and install. Instructions can be found on the support site, www.apple.com/support. The name of the article u want is "About the Archive and Install Feature"
In there, follow those directions, but when you click options, select erase instead of archive. If after it is finished, and you still have the same problem, contact applecare to setup a repair.
