Is my superdrive dead?

My Macbook doesn't seem to want to play any discs. When I insert a DVD (a store bought one not a burned one), in frontrow it says "Disc not supported." I tried to install Leopard today and it wouldn't load as well.
When I insert a disc it sounds okay for a second, then it makes a noise like it's trying to read it but can't. It's sounds like..it's stuck or something, i can't describe the noise. The last time I used it with a DVD it worked fine, now it's not working. Help?
I've heard a recent firmware update could have killed it, and as far as I know i have all the recent updates. Please help.

Does the disc get taken into the drive as usual and then once it starts trying to read the disc does it make a loud clicking noise continually and then after several seconds it stop and then try again a few seconds later?
If so this is what has just happened to my superdrive when using recordable dvd's my drive is working with store bought dvd's and recordable cd's but not recordable dvd's. I have it on good authority from an apple hardware technician that my superdrive is dying and needs replacing.
If your macbook is under warranty still take it to an apple store.
If not it would be much cheaper to buy an external dvd writer to use as superdrives cost a lot to replace.
By the way which firmware update are you refering to?

Well, i was about to watch a movie in my iMac, but when i inserted the dvd on my mac.
I waited, and nothing. And i looked over for the drive, and it didn't appear in the finder.

SuperDrive DEAD - Local Apple dealer no help at all!!

Does anyone know where I can send a complaint to Apple about a scam that my local Apple dealer tried to pull? Seems my SuperDrive died and I needed a replacement. So, I called the local Apple dealer to see about buying a new one. So, he gets on the phone. Imagine someone from college who spent all four years doing bong hits. That's the voice he used. This is how the conversation went:
Him: Can I help you?
Me: Yes, I have a dual 1.8Ghz G5. And my superdrive has died. I was wondering if you had one in stock and if so, how much is it?
(Pregnant pause)
Him: So, what's your question?
Me: Well, like I said I need a new superdrive for my G5 and I was wondering if you had one. And how much is it?
Him: Well, your best bet is to bring the machine in and have me replace it.
Me: Ok, any idea how much that will be?
Him: Those are matched to each machine's specific serial number.
Me: HUH? If that is so, then why is it that I can order one online? The Pioneer DVR-111D is for sale all over the 'net.
Him: Only I can replace it. So, you better bring it in.
Me: Okay, so, when can you do it? And do you have any idea of the cost?
Him: That will be $129.00 plus labor costs. I used the last one yesterday. You'll have to wait until Monday.
Me: $129.00? Other World Computing has it for $56.00
Him: That's a different drive. Ours is the DVR-112.
Me: (Exasperated) Okay, well, I'll call you on Monday and maybe bring it in on Wednesday.
Him: Ok, but only I can replace it. I won't sell parts to the general public.
Me: Yeah, I get it.
So, I started phoning around. And as I figured, he was full of it! So, I called him back and asked him why he told me all this crap.
Him: Oh well, you can buy them, but you have to be certified to install them. They are machine specific.
Me: Well, I have called around and asked several different dealers about that. They all deny it's true.
Him: They aren't Apple dealers.
Me: Excuse me? Then how is it that they have entire websites dedicated to nothing but Apple?
Him: They aren't certified. They can sell it to you, but it won't work.
Me: Well, I personally think you are trying to pull a scam.
Him: Well, you can think that. I don't care. But I've got the parts and you don't.
Me: I thought you said you used the last one.
Him: No I didn't.
Me: WHAT? Just forget it.
So, I won't mention the dealers name. But it's the only dealer in the 86301 zip code.
In the meantime, I have ordered the Pioneer DVR-111D from an online dealer.
I think it will work just fine.

Dual 1.8 G5 Mac OS X (10.4.7) Dead SuperDrive

I have the same issue. Mine was just starting to update then I got the 3014 error and phone it stuck in recovery mode and can't restore because of the 3014 error.
YES, did all of the steps that apple article suggested like Tiffany F.
-Tried reinstalling iTunes
-Turned off firewall
-host file good
-took sim card out like some suggested
-checked router
I really hope it's just cuz the servers are too loaded.

Superdrive dead, can I use iBook combo drive

My superdrive had died, can I hook up to my iMac my iBook so I can use it's combo drive?

Re my message below regarding the dead superdrive, my computer is an iMac G4, not G3.

Superdrive dead on MacBook pro 17inch

I have a Macbook Pro 17' but the superdrive is not showing up.
When I do reboot my mac though the last disc inserted is still spinning.
I have tried a SMC reset and did not work.
I have tried to press the eject button after restart and the chime sound, still no luck.
I have tried to press the track pad after reboot, still no luck.
I have tried [option + D] after reboot still no luck to see if it will appear as a bootable option, still no luck.
I am running out of options and wondering if there is a specific driver that I can download and install to bring my superdrive back to functionality?
The issue occurred after un-installing parallel Desktop (with a windows 7 virtual machine).
I could try and format the drive of my machine and re-install from scratch, will it fix the issue though?

Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the computer is not recognizing the superdrive. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you isolate or resolve the issue.
Get help with the slot-loading SuperDrive on your Mac computer - Apple Support
Accepts discs but they don't mount or are automatically ejected
Make sure the drive is not placed upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up as shown in section 1.
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
OS X Snow Leopard v10.6 or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
OS X Lion v10.7 and later: Click the Apple () menu and then hold down the Option key. Choose System Information from the menu.
If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.

Imac superdrive dead

imac 10.8.2 Mountain Lion superdrive will not accept DVDs; just takes them in whirls them around and 15 seconds later spits them out. Any fixes or is it down to the Apple store and take a holiday for 5 days?

First, try resetting the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 In some cases, it may repair that problem if it's software-related.
If it doesn't work, the only thing you can do is to take the computer to an Apple Store. The repair time will depend if the Apple Store has got the SuperDrive that your Mac needs in stock, because in some cases, it may be repaired the same day you take the computer

Superdrive dead/repair ?

Like many others my superdrive is not working spitting out any cd/dvd I try. I'm a little leary to send it for repair right now..I'm hitting that 2-3 month mark with a week 25 macbook and am nervous that if I send it in for the superdrive to be fixed that when I get it back I'll start getting RSD and have to send it back. Does anyone know if they are automatically swapping the heatsink/logic boards in the affected serial range when they go in for a different type of repair?

They might or the might not. Nobody knows what is the standard procedure for replacing a funcional part after fixing the faulty part except apple technician themselves.
It is also depend on their judgement, but I believe after they replace / fix your optical drive they will run yours for a full day to see if anything comes up as a domino effect due your previous repair.
And if they think nothing to be replaced they won't bother to do that.

Superdrive Dead - won't accept media

My disk drive was working fine (I played a dvd 20 hours ago) until I inserted an audio disk and quickly ejected it from my wirless keyboard. It ejected fine, before iTunes even opened, and I just quit iTunes when it did open. Now it is lifeless, and won't react to or accept inserted media. Please help!
- I've reset the SMC, reset the PRAM/NVRAM
- I've reparied permissions.
- I've opened iTunes and used eject from the menu.
- There is no disk image hiding on the desktop or anywhere else.
I have one cause for hope, and that is the drive is still recognized in system profiler:

One thing that may be off is Async Notification is "Yes," but I can't find any online info on that.

An update - I attached a new external superdrive and had the same issue - the drive would not respond when connected to my computer, though it responds fine when attached to my laptop and is listed in the system profiler.

I just got my new MBP 15.4 2.66 Matte screen and the Superdrive ejects everything without mounting, even a cleaning CD.

Superdrive dead - recommendations for replacement?

My PB Ti (Gigabit Ethernet) Superdrive has failed. It is the Matshita DVD-R UJ-815. It began to squeal and leaves a circular scratch in the middle of the media. Roxio Toast reports a hardware failure, I believe the message was a servo spindle failure. In any event, it seems I need to shop for a replacement drive.

You can use any slot load drive out there, you do not need to spend big money from specialists.
I fitted a Pioneer drive as noted in my profile but many are available, check Accelerate Your Mac's drive database for ideas.
Also note that some drives are supplied as slaves and, although they can be used that way, these are better modified to master like this.

Superdrive DEAD

Hi,
The Superdrive on my imac G5 will not load discs and Toast reads "no recorder found." I also can't seem to find the drive on my system profiler. Prior to it's dissappearance, the drive occasionally engaged in some loud whirring.

Hi, As my previous posting was 'is my superdrive dead', now i think it is what's my alternative? Should i take it to a dealer and get it replaced? Replace it myself (if its easy to do) but with what? and maybe buy a stand alone drive but again what type? I tend to use tuff disks or cheaper. thanks.

How in the world would we know if you don't give us some details.
What makes you believe that it is dead?
Chances are if you have this post in the correct fourm your Optical Drive is still in warntee. Apple will replace it. Do you have Applecare, if so they will for sure.
If you haven't tried to do some basic steps to determine if your drive is the problem or the media you are using.
Have you followed any of the recommended maintenece procedures.

Burning iMovies, Dead Superdrive and Crossover Cable Connections - oh my!

Is the following solution to my scenario possible:
I have a dead Superdrive in one of my eMacs and am unable to burn (obviously). I would still like to use the eMac to create movies using iMovie but am wondering if I can connect this eMac to another eMac using a crossover cable, and use the eMac with the working Superdrive to burn the DVD?
I have a fear that this wont be possible if the video files need to be on the computer that is doing the burning. I teach at a school and money is not freely accessible (I realize I could get an external burner and problem solved but this might not be possible and am looking for alternate solutions - maybe this is too crazy for anyone to have attempted before).

Probably a slightly easier and faster way to access the iMovie project from the "defective" drive eMac is to hook the two emacs together with a standard Firewire cable. Now boot the eMac with the bad drive and the project into Target mode. This makes that eMac look like an external hard drive to the other Mac and will appear on the other Mac's desktop as a drive. Now simply open the project directly off the hard drive of the eMac and it will be no different than loading the project from an external drive. Or you can simply copy the project over into the other eMac.
