Is my uh... battery suppost to flop out?

Hello my friends, I'd like to tell you of the wonderful things that has happened to me over the past year with myself and my iBook G4.
I got the machine back in February of last year from Amazon.com, they were having a really good deal so I said "What the heck."
It came about 5 days later. I opened up the package and the first thing I knew was the left side of the mouse button was elevated, my friend mentioned that to me but I told him I thought it was normal. Then I noticed a slight warp in the lower portion of the keyboard(you know that little dip between the wrist-wrests and the physical keyboard), I thought that was normal also.
I took the machine up to my cousins for my birthday a few weeks later. I was up on the couch typing an E-Mail when my battery fell out all on its own, so I had to go back and re-type my E-Mail. I have to keep constant watch on the battery while I'm carrying my iBook so the battery doesn't fall out... Some people say it takes a small coin to turn that screw, with me it takes barely a fingernail.
So a few weeks ago when Christmas rolls around, I get a stick of memory. I open up the keyboard and notice that the left little switch to take the keyboard off isn't spring loaded and the right one was. So I put the RAM in and let it be.
Then a few days ago I was on my way to my friends house with my iBook and the battery flops out of the machine onto the hard tar. I picked it up and noticed a small crack and some scuffs in the battery. But that time I was upset and called Apple.
Apple sent me out all the necessary things to send it in for repair. So I package up the machine and send it in...
A few days later I get an E-Mail from Apple saying the need to talk to me about my iBook. So I call them and they tell me that there is nothing they can do because it is my fault that these defects are there, granted I take responsability for the battery falling out, but it shouldn't have fallen out so easily in the first place.
I purchased the Applecare protection plan hoping that an issue like this could be resolved. I payed 300 dollars for the protection plan incase something like this happened. Apple wants to charge me $450 dollars to get the machine repaired.
I then proceded to call Amazon, bu they couldn't do anything about it.
I can't start even to express my feelings for what has gone on here.
It runs great, no problems ever.
Can anyone suggest anything that I should do?

Hi Sparta308,
Welcome to Apple Discussions
That is kind of unusual, I think. I would suggest first buying a new battery. I would do it just incase it might be the battery. The other thing you can do, which is the simplest, is to get some duck tape. I know kids from when I used the G3 iBooks in school that would drop them down a flight of stairs (they were like bricks) and the batter would pop out. You'd see maybe 10 kids with a grey colored battery.
I hope that helps,
Jon
PS I am sorry I don't have much advise

  • Any ideas on how to prevent the battery cover from falling out?

My battery cover continuously falls out.  Is there something I am doing wrong?

Usually it's because the cover isn't fully inserted for the latch to catch.   The left photo is incorrect.  The right photo shows the cover fully inserted.   Just push harder on each side of the latch.

  • Battery won't come out

I fly every week and swap 2 batteries regularly with my MacBook Pro. Just tried to swap batteries and the battery will not come out! I've tried shaking it loose while holding both release levers open, but it won't budge. I thought of trying to pry it out using a straight edge razor blade but don't want to scratch it or cause damage and besides I would need 3 hands.
The battery charges OK, but being limited to one battery doesn't work for me as much as I fly and am away from AC.
I've scheduled a genius appt. at an Apple store, but has anyone else experienced this problem and/or have an easy solution!

I believe the Genius Bar is your best option for avoiding damage. It is possible that the stuck battery is defective and has leaked, swollen, or both.
When the Genius gets the battery out, be there while they inspect the battery compartment for signs of damage. If your find the battery has leaked or swollen, have them check for and document any staining or corrosion inside the compartment. You wouldn't want to just get a new battery and find out later that the old one has damaged something that's harder to replace.
I had the original battery in my MBP start to leak but I discovered before it swelled or anything touched the compartment. Had I waited, the location of the leak could have made the battery hard to extract.

  • Problem building J-K Flip-Flop out of gates and other circuits

    Hey
I've been having problems with Multisim 11.0 when ever I try building a J-K Flip-Flop out of gates .
The simulation stops at the fourth clock and doesn't want to set Q low, I've seen the error in other design were multisim  doesn't want to do the logic operations.
Multisim seems to have problem were whenever there is a wire that splits from an outputs to two inputs, I've used the measurement probe on an other design and it shows that when ever there is a spilt the simulation it say its state is unknown...... Well I jus found out that when I put a probe on the schematic and status the simulation then it works perfectly
The picture should explain a lot more
I hope you can understand what my problem is
If I could get a solution to This problem(s) it would be great because I would like to be able to make more circuits without using several hours of trouble shooting only to come to the conclusion that it should probably work even though the simulation says no...
This would save a lot of time when I'm building those circuits in school and I would be able to make bigger circuit simulation

  • MacBook Pro battery expanding – am I out of luck?

I purchased a MacBook Pro (17" Penryn 2.5Ghz) a couple years back in South Africa.  I moved to the US about a year ago and in the last couple months, I have noticed my battery expand.  I cannot use it in the machine anymore as I think it will damage it, and the trackpad button doesn't register a click anymore with the battery in (probably because of the pressure up from the battery).
Am I out of luck with getting a new battery and have to cough up the $125 for a new one?
I checked with the company that I bought the MacBook Pro from (authorized Apple Dealer in South Africa) and they do not cover anything like this.
    Am I out of luck?
    Cheers,
    Calvin

    Hi Calvin,
Unfortunately no one here can truthfully answer that question for you. This is a policy & procedure question for Apple and this message board is for user-to-user discussions. Does (or did) the machine have the AppleCare Protection on it?
There's two ways to handle this, as far as next steps:
1.) Call AppleCare via telephone, explain the situation and ask what options are available to you.
2.) Take the machine (and battery) into an Apple Authorized Service Center or Apple Retail Store (Genius Bar) for visual verification and ask what options are available to you.
You'll find that there's no clear cut response to these issues (battery expansion). For every person that doesn't get it covered by Apple, another person posts that they got it replaced free of charge with no questions asked.

  • Since few days iPhone 4 suddenly uses huge amount of data and battery, how to find out which App is guilty?

    Hi Community,
since Friday my iPhone 4 startet using huge amounts of mobile data and rapidly wastes battery lifetime (50% in 3 hous!) It also gets quite warm even when I don't use it at all.
I suspect an app does this, because in flight mode battery is ok.
How do I find out which app is to blame without having to uninstall all apps?
    Thanks for your help.
    Kind regards

  • Brand New MBP 15 RD, no Org/Grn light on MagSafe2 - unable to start MBP as battery is completely drained out! Won't charge with 2 different MgS2 chargers! Help/ideas?

I bought a brand new Macbook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2013) model. After unpacking, I plugged in the MagSafe2 power adaptor to the MagSafe2 port and everything looked fine.
However, after charging the battery to 100%; I disconnected the MagSafe2 power adaptor. When the battery charge percentage fell to below 25%, I reconnected the MagSafe2 power adaptor and noticed that the Orange light (indicating that the battery is being charged) was not lit.
Furthermore, when I let the battery die out to 0%; the battery won't recharge and neither an Orange or Green light on the MagSafe2 power adaptor. I had bought a spare adaptor for work and the same issue with this MagSafe2 power adaptor. So it was certain that the problem wasn't with the MagSafe2 power adaptor but rather with the MagSafe2 port on the Macbook Pro!
I took the Macbook Pro and MagSafe2 power adaptor to the local authorized Apple Service Provider who decided to hold onto my gear for 3-4 days to ascertain the source of the problem! Unfortunately no Apple Retail Stores or Genius Bars in the country that I live in.
All in all, very frustrating to know that your brand new Macbook Pro costing USD 3,300 is faulty straight out of the box!

    You said:
I took the Macbook Pro and MagSafe2 power adaptor to the local authorized Apple Service Provider who decided to hold onto my gear for 3-4 days to ascertain the source of the problem!
    Do they still have it?
From your indications there is a faulty IO board
Contact Apple for return options given your location issue and no proximity to an Apple shop.
    Peace to you.

  • T400 & T500 Battery size - what sticks out and what doesn't? *EMBEDDED IMAGES*

I've been seeing a lot of discussion around the various notebook communities about batteries, and wanted to take a moment to discuss them. The big question on everybody's mind is: which batteries fit flush on the new T400 & T500, and which don't?
I'm still trying to get accurate measurements of how far the batteries stick out the back of these machines and I will update this post when I have them. I just wanted to get this out there to hopefully answer people's questions sooner than later.
Lastly, please note this information applies to R400 & R500 as well.
Edit Saw this question out there and I updated the info below to show the extra mount of runtime one battery has over another. Obviously your runtime will vary based on usage, but given the capacity of the battery, one can derive how much longer it will run at a given usage level.
also, anyone know how much longer the life is on a 9 cell vs a 6 cell?
8/14 Edit - Added all battery measurements except 9-cell. Stay tuned. Note that I also included the total depth of the battery, which is how I calculated how far the batteries stick out. (Depth of larger battery) - (Depth of flush battery) = amount sticking out. I'm normally good with numbers and a calculator, but if I made a mistake feel free to correct me.
8/18 Edit - The measurements for the 9-cell battery are now below, and added photo comparing two systems. Thanks to Matt Kohut for having the systems and the camera.
    T400
Short answer - the batteries are the same on T61 and R61 14.1" widescreen:
    4-cell: Flush
    6, 7, 9-cell: Sticks out
(Note: The 7-cell battery is actually replaced by the 9-cell now)
    Long answer:
Length sticking out back of system:
    4-cell: 0 inches (1.57 inches deep)
    6-cell: 1 inch (2.57 inches deep)
    7-cell: 1.08 inches (2.65 inches deep)
    9-cell: 1.47 inches (3.04 inches deep)
    Part number:
    4-cell: 41U3196
    6-cell: 41U3198
    7-cell: 41U3197
    9-cell: 43R2499
    Capacity in Wattage-hours:
    4-cell: 37.44
    6-cell: 56.16 50% longer run-time than 4-cell
    7-cell: 74.88 100% longer run-time than 4-cell, 33% longer than 6-cell
    9-cell: 84.24 125% > 4-cell, 50% > 6-cell, 12.5% > 7-cell
Important note about 9-cell on T400: As some of you have noted, this battery is uniquely shaped as shown in the photo below. This was done to allow for the increased run-time of the 9-cell battery while still fitting in all of our docking stations. Note that we are no longer offering the 7-cell battery for purchase with new systems and it will not be something offered going forward, you may still be able to purchase it from your local Lenovo teams or resellers/business partners. Contact them directly to find out.
Note: These pictures are of a T61, but you get the idea...
    6-cell T61 on top, 9-cell T400 on bottom
    T500
Short answer - the batteries are the same on T61 and R61 15.4" widescreen/14.1" standard:
    6-cell: Flush
    9-cell: Sticks out
    Long answer:
Length sticking out back of system:
    6-cell: 0 inches (2.3 inches deep)9-cell: 0.83 inches (3.13 inches deep)
    Part number:
    6-cell: 40Y6799
    9-cell: 40Y6797
    Capacity in Wattage-hours:
    6-cell: 56.16
    9-cell: 84.24 50% longer runtime than 6-cell

The part number for my 6-cell battery that I received on my system configuration differs than the one that you have listed.
     42V9338   SBB 6 CELL LI-ION BATERRY
Could it be that T61 batteries are backwards compatible with the T400 and that the T400 also has new batteries?
From looking at the lenovo site to order the T400 it does suggest that 6 cell sticks out but I feel that it could be one of the many errors (although many have been fixed) on the site.
If you look at tabook.pdf the T61 with a 6 cell has a depth of 10.2 inches whereas the T400 with a 6cell has a depth of 9.4 inches suggesting that the 6cell on the T400 would sit fairly flush with the back of the notebook.  I find it hard to believe that the T400 with a 4cell battery has a depth of 8.5 or so inches.
Any further information would be appreciated

The battery on my 2007 MacBook won't lift after unlocking latch.  It seems to be stuck and rather sticky and therefore will not lift out to replace. What should I do?

Oh yeah when I said it wouldn't turn on I mean no start up sound, the fan thing not a sausage. The lights on the side showed the battery was fully charged and the charger had the green light on. Hope that helps

  • Just updated iphone to iSO 7 how to I turn off apps so battery doesn't run out?

I just updated my iphone 4 to iSO 7 how do I shut off apps not to run out battery?

I believe you are asking how to close your running apps. If so you will double tap the home button then swipe up on the apps. You can do two or three at a time as well to make this a faster process. Another thing you ca change for battery conserving is go t settings, general, background app refresh and turn off any apps that you don't need to keep running when your not on their screen. Foot reminders unless you use the on arrival option that one does not need to be on.

  • Battery Pack - in or out?

I am a new convert to Apple Powerbook. I heard some horror stories about the short battery lifespan.
I heard that frequent recharging of the battery when it is not low, actually drains out the battery faster and shortens its life. Is this true?
Should I remove my battery pack from my Powerbook when I am using the power adapter?? I am contacted to the power 80% of the time.
If yes, is there any risk of damage to the battery compartment, since it is exposed and what can I do to protect it?

    Not sure that's very helpful.
Just running it down a bit and charging up all the time is ok, as long as you run it down fully every couple of weeks or so. Apple advise that you should "keep the electrons moving" so run the battery a bit and then charge up every couple of days or so with a full discharge at least once a month and preferably once every two weeks.
When plugged in, the charger charges up to 100% and then stops charging until the battery drops below 95%. This is to stop the situation where it is continually charging between 99-100% which is bad for the battery.
No reason you can't run without the battery, but there is no reason you have to. If you store it, store it at 50% charge - but if you just run it down a bit every couple of days as suggested (I would say a varying amount between 10 and 60% usage) this will maximise the useful battery life. Bear in mind the useful life of lithium ion batteries is not that long even in the best case scenario - you can only do your best.
Lastly, make sure you calibrate your battery at least every two months and once every month ideally.
    You will find further info here;
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
It is not recommended to run the battery down and charge right up each time you use the machine.
    I hope that helps.
    Best of luck.

When I am running on battery, the various checkboxes for the Battery Stretch options are greyed out. Normally they are only greyed out when running on AC power, but mine are greyed out all of the time. How do I fix this?
I suspect became got corrupted in the registry. I had the problem described at http://www.brandlehner.at/Brandlehner/cab_blog.nsf/d6plinks/CBRR-6YWBNV but managed to fix it.
    Windows XP SP3, T61 7551-V51, Power Manager 1.73, Power Management Driver 1.60.0.4.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

    Hi,
in case you want to use this option properly, make sure, that you have the latest version of Power manager, Poewr management utility, System interface driver and Hotkey installed.
In case once of them is older verison, especially Power management driver, then this situation amy appear.
Let me know you system type and the model .
