Is my USB slow?

Hi
I have a 1.67 Ghz G4 PB and reckon the USB is really slow.
Importing photos into iPhoto with a card reader takes about 20 minutes for 100 or so 2.5MB ish images but much less on my Dell (4 mins for 257 photos on same card and reader).
Also, I recently bought a Western Digital My Book USB2 MyBook external hard drive. Copying about 1GB of data takes about an hour which seems really slow.
Apparently this drive has a transfer rate of 480 MBPS but that means nothing to me - can anyone tell me if my USB connections are normal or sluggish.
I'm using a 4 port hub with label printer, ext. hard drive, card reader and scanner plugged in so most are idle and only is ever going at one time.
Thanks

If you have the time, transfer the 250mB onto the desktop first, before the import into iPhoto. That will be a better comparison.
250mB in 20 minutes does seem slow to me.

  • KT4V (MSI-6712) USB Slowness

    Hi,
As u can already see from the subject i have the MSI-6712.  Im running Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 1.  I recently purchased the Archos Multimedia Hard Disk which has USB2.0 and firewire.  I knew i didnt install the patch, so i did install the patch (VIAEHCX1.INF) and the 4in1 patch.  I restarted my PC and it detected the hardware fine as the "JUKEBOX" but it took 4 minutes to transfer a 180MB file, i know this is wrong because i have transfered 500MB in 4 minutes on another PC using USB2.0.  In the Device Manager, the USB bit does have 'VIA USB 2.0 Enhanced Host COntroller' but it doesnt seem to be running USB2.0.  Can anyone help me,
    PM5K

I've had no error message about the device being used in a USB2.0 port but i have been able to open the Hard Disk destination, just has a slow transfer rate.  Im thinking that it could be the setup in the Device Manager, Do they seem right to you?

  • USB slow to respond

A few days ago I connected my camera to my iMac by USB to download some photos. Normally Image Capture will load when the camera is connected and switched on and I can immediately start downloading my photos. But this time Image Capture loaded but displayed the message "no camera or scanner connected", it must've been recognising something to automatically load Image Capture though. I disconnected and reconnected a few times, but the same message appeared. Then I found that I left it for a few minutes that Image Capture would eventually recognise my camera and with a bit more waiting it would allow me to download the photos.
Yesterday I went to use my scanner for the first time in 2 months. I pressed the button on the scanner, which would normally open Image Capture, but nothing happened. I found that if I open Image Caputre manually it would, after some waiting a minute or more, eventually recognise the scanner ... just as with the camera.
My initial thought was a problem with Image Capture, but when using other scanning software, such as Epson Scan, or via the Print/Fax pref pane, it is still just as slow to respond. Outputting through USB is fine, it will print immediately when being sent a file, and I've had no problems when backing up to my external USB HD. The Mac is recognising when a USB device is connected, but for some reason is extremely slow at letting me scan or download photos, whereas previously these operations were very immediate and efficient. The 10.6.7 update didn't help. I'm stumped, I can't think of anything that might cause this behaviour, any help appreciated, thanks!

I would first recommend a SMC reset to see if that helps. You can also create another user account (call it Test Account) and DO NOT change a thing, then test to see if it works. If it does then you know you have a software issue on your user account that you need to troubleshoot.

    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • LaCie Ethernet Big Disk | USB Slow

    Hi,
I'm using a LaCie Ethernet Big Disk (1TB) as a backup HD to my iMac. While both the HD and Mac support USB 2.0, the data is flowing at a 3.46 MB/s. I thought USB 2.0 ought, in theory at least, to run at 60MB/s.
The connection is via an Ethernet Adaptor, is says that it's Media Subtype (from the Sytem Profiler) is 10baseT/UTP. Is this the problem? Shouldn't this say somthing along the lines of 1000 baseT? Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hi Frando-
That 10base clue is part of it. Is there a switch or router between the drive and your Mac that is operating at 10? Make sure to check your cabling as often a bad cable or connection can cause a slower connect speed.
If you are accessing this drive over the network than the USB speed doesn't matter as that is not how the drive is transferring data.
    Luck-

  • Newbie: 6020E (USB) slow performance with mixed digital and analog input

    Hi,
I'm using a 6020E to do analog and digital input, and I'm getting very bad performance.
Please note that doing IO in Labview is new to me!
I have read the post about 6020E slow performance, and it says I should do buffered IO.
Can anybody point me to some DOC or SAMPLE that actually shows or explains how one should do this. I need to read several digital IO lines (which I can combine in one port-read), and several analog inputs.
Seeing how slow the reading on the 6020E is, I am amazed there is only one post that deals with this issue.
I would be satisfied to get the 6020E into some sort of continuous read mode so that whenever I need data, I get the latest reading right away.
    thanks,
    Peter D'Hoye

    Hi Peter,
Your cannot do buffered digital I/O with your daqpad. It doesn't have that capability. You can only make direct software calls with digital read/write from/to your port. So your digital IO is completely software clocked and not hardware clocked. The example you are trying is only for specific Simultanuous sampling boards or now also for M-series boards that are able to do correlated DIO.
Use the Cont Acq&Graph Voltage-Int Clk.vi example for your analog measurements. (NI Example Finder) For your digital IO you can only use the examples like Read Dig Chan.vi, Read Dig Port,...
There are indeed some slow performance issues with single point I/O Operations, that is correct.
    Check the explaination below:
DAQPads are offered for the Universal Serial Bus (USB) and the IEEE 1394 (also known as FireWire). Both of these standards use a high-speed serial communication protocol between the computer and the device with a bandwidth up to 12 MB/s for USB and 400 MB/s for FireWire.
During a single point operation, the DAQ device requires a complete set of configuration commands. This is done through serial communication (USB or FireWire), making the process slower than in a PCI-based board. The speed obtained for single point operation in a DAQPad is system dependent; this means that your computer processor, memory, bus speed, and other factors alter the speed at which you can do single-point operations with a DAQPad.
For example, on the DAQPad-6020E, timed non-buffered analog input operations are limited to about 50 Hz. At higher rates, the software may become unresponsive. On a FireWire device, you can expect stable operation around 3,000 Hz. But again, these figures are system dependent.
    Regards.

  • Thunderbolt USB slow?

    Hi fellow mac lovers,
My new Air/Thunderbolt system is great but I just noticed that USB transfer rates through the Thunderbolt Display are much slower!
Same disk drive, same cable, same file, same copy command:
USB thru    Thunderbolt: ~0.5 GB / minute
USB from MacBook Air:  ~2.0 GB / minute
Anyone else able to reproduce this phenomenon?

  • USB Slow

I was transferring some files from an old Windows machine to my new MBP with a flash drive, & copying from the windows machine to the flash drive was a LOT faster than copying from the flash to the MBP. It felt like the difference between USB2 & UBS1 speeds respectively. Is this common? I hadn't noticed this before.

It's really a combination of using USB flash drives (which are slow) and the Mac having to copy from a DOS formatted drive. The flash drive would be faster if it were formatted Mac OS Extended, but then you couldn't use it interchangeably on a PC.

  • Roar powered up on USB slows reboot time considerably

I have to remember to switch Roar USB speakers off when rebooting, otherwise it is as slow as wading through treacle. Maybe it would be a good idea for future firmware to do this automagically and turn back on when logged in again.
Also, a mute option in the Control Panel for when listening on headphones. A headphone socket too would be useful.
OK. I must remember to power off while rebooting, but it's a pain nevertheless. As for the headphones, muting with the Windows task bar icon mutes speakers at the same time.

    Hi FJMcNasty,
Welcome to the Forums and thank you for the feedback.
If I understand you correctly, you have your Sound Blaster Roar connected to your PC/laptop, it's turned on, and you reboot your computer. So when you say "slow", could you tell me how long did it take to reboot?
What is your computer's loading time with and without the SB Roar connected and what is the version of your USB ports?
I hope to hear from you soon.
    Cheers,
    Colin-CL

  • USB slows as I use it

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I've noticed that transferring files from my card reader have slowed tremendously. After a reboot, files transfer at the normal rate—a 2GB cf card will take about 5 minutes. However, after a few hours this slows to 30 minutes for the same 2GB CF card. Any thoughts? The card reader is about 1 year old. I have external hard drives also connected via usb and there are no performance issues with them.
I've thought of just getting new card reader, but there is no guarantee that will solve the problem and it's just a lame solution.

That does sound like something is wrong.
    Return the phone.

  • Usb to usb slow

How come when I transfer from a USB external HDD to another USB HDD via my macbook Retina.  It is REALLY slow?  When I use my desktop as a go between it's fast.. well the expected speeds..Both drives are USB 3.0..
    Just curious..
It's a major inconvenience actually as I use a 32GB micro USB as a "go between" for sorting before I place files on my SSD
I'd like to know why or how to make it fast if anyone knows..
    Thanks

In system profiler, it doesn't mention any of the ports being "high speed", only says for some the speed is "Up to 12 Mb/sec" and on others it says "up to 1.5 Mb/sec"
And no, it does not support firewire, USB 2.0 is all it has. The box lists it as High Speed, but I am not getting anywhere near.
    Thank you.

  • NF980a USB Slow Boot

    Hi,
Wondering if anyone else has this problem or knows a fix,
When I boot from a USB KeyDrive to run Windows 7 install it takes forever on my NF980a,
Seriously like almost 10 minutes, it's faster to run the DVD on this machine.
With the same USB Keydrive, and my other computer, literally takes like 2 minutes or less to load and boot into windows 7 installation.
I have the lastest bios on the Nf980a,
Any answeres here or should I send to tech support?
As the ports seem fine when transfering off my usb backup drive, 25mb solid in any port.
    Thanks.

i have the same problem with slow USB Boot on a MSI P35 Neo2-FR mainboard.
i have tried something like 5 different USB drives and all are the same. the problem is when it's tring to boot from USB. there is some missing support for USB booting from BIOS , i don't know.
i had a BIOS from 2008 and i have updated to the latest version but nothing solved my problem.
i have tried to boot from USB with a linux live environment, windows live CD or i have tried to install windows from USB drive. all of them with very slow reading (instead of max 2-3 min loading time it takes almost 20-25min at least..).
when the system (windows) loads up the speed of reading the USB drives increse dramatically and all things gets back o normal.
with the same USB drive on several computers all the above works without any delay or very slow reading. so this i think it's the motherboard or the motherboard BIOS but i don't have a clue on how to fix this issue.
any help will be more than appreciated. thank you.

  • Media Encoder Slows Everything Else Down

    Hello,
I'm a happy new user of CC 2014 for the most part, just having one issue so far.  Whenever I transcode with AME CC 2014, everything else on my computer becomes unbearably slow.  Most of my searches for this issue have turned up complaints about AME itself being too slow.  I'm having the opposite problem.  AME is ripping through transcodes like no one's business, and I'm very satisfied with its vastly improved performance from Compressor and other older software, but I need to be able to do other things while I'm transcoding!  (NOTE: I was not experiencing this issue with AME CS 6)
Based on some advice I got, I made sure that my Renderer was set to Mercury Playback Engine Software Only and not Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (OpenCL).  Unfortunately, I noticed no change between the two options.  I tried changing the Memory allocation in Preferences as well.  Here is a screenshot of my CPU's memory usage across two test transcodes.  The first hump shows ~96% CPU usage by AME when I allocate 10 GB to AME and 6 GB to other software.  The second hump, also ~96%, is from allocating 1 GB to AME and 15 GB to other software.  No improvement noticed when tweaking Memory allocation settings.
When AME is transcoding, my Wacom tablet (USB) slows down until the cursor is moving through sludge, appearing and reappearing constantly.  Interestingly, my bluetooth mouse does not experience the same decrease in responsiveness, but basically all other software becomes unusably glitchy and slow.
I like the new AME render speeds, I just want to strike a balance between fast rendering and multitasking in other video software.  Any ideas of how to fix this problem?

Interesting.  But to the extent that I'm describing?  The jump from AME CS 6 to CC 10 is enormous, with CC 10 I basically can't transcode and do anything else on my computer at the same time.  I doubt that Adobe designed their product to be used exclusively in this way.

  • Casio Exilim EX-Z80  Slow Import

Importing images from this camera can take anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes per. This is a NEW issue since the second to last update to iPhoto. Prior to that, it was slow, but just "USB" slow. Is anyone having problems with their cameras? Any work around other than a USB card reader?

    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Performance problems in games with Sound Blaster USB Sound Dev

    Hello!
I recently bought a new USB sound device named "Creative Sound Blaster Surround 5. USB Sound Device"?or maybe also "Sound Blaster Li've! 24-bit External" as this is the name that Windows is displaying.
Before, i was using a C-Media PCI Audio Device.
    Other system info:
    Windows Vista SP
ATI Radeon 9200 LE (i know it's old, but i was able to play the games before)
    2GB RAM
Now, my performance in games decreased significantly.
I only play Team Fortress 2, but i also tried an old GoldSrc engine?based game which was also slower.
The game now isn't playing fluently like before: my fps dropped and every few seconds, the graphics stop as there is a big network lag. It is now impossible to really play the game.
    i already tried
    - reinstalling steam and tf2
    - using another usb port
    - reinstalling the sound drivers
    - all (both sound and graphics) settings to low
The Steam support thinks that the data transfer rate for USB isn't high enough for what is needed and recommends that i should buy an internal sound card.
But i hope there is a different solution to this problem and someone here can help.
    Thanks!

No PCI interface, but USB = Slow. No hardware-acceleration (Mayber your CMedia had !real!, not pseudo?DS hardware support) so its normal that the soundblaster usb is slower in every term. But maybe sounds better...
The USB versions are only for Notebooks and other speciall situations where a PCI soundcard with X-FI or Audigy chip cannot be used...
