Is my Zen Touch DRM compliant/compatib

Hi All,
I've just got a Zen Touch 40gb.Apologies for such a dumb question, but this mp3 malarkey is new to me!
Can you tell me if it is DRM compliant (as Creative claim in the online catalogue). I'm just wondering if anybody can tell me which music download sites I can use (I'm based in the U.K.) e.g. Wannadoo/Napster etc. ?
Thanks in advance,
Si.

DM wrote:The only way to get those songs to transfer is if you burned them to a CD and ripped them back into MP3 format, thus losing the DRM protection.
Or to unprotected WMA format. (Some older versions of WMP ripped to protected WMA by default, but there's a checkbox to turn that off; WMP 0 rips to unprotected WMA by default.)
The "burn-and-rip" method is good to learn for purchased DRM'ed files of any format, even WMA. It's the best insurance against loss of purchased music due to a corrupted DRM store, which happened to me in WMP 0 when I tried to install the original beta of Yahoo! Music Engine; luckily for me, this happened just after I had burned all my files, and I was able to recover all of them from the CD. (It's not as important with subscription files; you can usually just re-download them.) It also lets me buy most of my purchased album downloads from iTunes; though I'll probably never buy an iPod, I prefer the iTunes burn engine (no 2-second gaps like in WMP) and cover printer (easier to use than anything in the WMA world), and it has better exclusi'ves than most WMA stores. (And yes, I know about transcoding issues; but most folks who need to worry about that don't buy from download stores to begin with.)

  • Will Zen Touch be made Rhapsody to Go compatib

I am considering buying a Zen Touch, but want to use it with rhapsody to go. Is the firmware upgrade required for Rhapsody to Go the same as the one required to make it Napster to go? I know that Creative has promised to make Zen Touch NTG compatible but want to know if a Rhapsody upgrade will also happen? If there are any ballpark timeframes on this happening, that would be great.

Both require the ability to use the Janus DRM.
So I assume when Nap2Go support happens, Rhap2Go will soon follow.

  • Some WMA/DRM files won't sync after firmware upgrade on Zen Touch

I downloaded an eaudio book from my library, which grants a 2 day license. Prior to upgrading the firmware (to the latest available) on my Zen Touch, I was able to upload this book and play it while walking, etc.
At the same time, I was able to upload several other books I had downloaded and licensed. All are WMA/DRM.
After upgrading the firmware, I was able to resync some of the books I'd downloaded to my Zen Touch. Several, however, yield error messages--no matter how I try to upload them (WMP, Creative MediaSource, Zen Touch Media Explorer). All refuse to let me upload.
These books previously uploaded/played just fine. Note: they still play fine using WMP and Creative's software. But, it's a bit difficult to lug my desktop around when walking/running through the woods.
Any idea what the problem might be? All MediaSource says is:
    <IMG src="http://herb.thetysons.org/images/CMC-error.jpg">
WMP0 tells me that "an unknown error" has occurred. Neither event is significant to make it to the system's application event log.
Any ideas on why these files--which could be tranferred before--can't be transferred now? The licenses are still valid, and the file format is identical to those that transferred without incident.

OK, my update. After reading the recent responses (thanks!), I performed the following experiments.
    1) Reverted to the original v2.0 via factory restore, relinked to the Mac. ATV immediately copied over my entire library (one movie, lots of music) from the Mac, because I have iTunes checked marked for Automatic Sync ("iTunes automatically chooses the audio and video to sync, etc.").
*I consider this to be normal and expected behaviour.*
    2) Downloaded and installed the 2.1 update (again...). After reboot the ATV was still on my network and still linked to my Mac. However there was no longer any media content on the ATV (as before).
*I do not consider this to be normal, expected behaviour. Nor, for that matter, is wiping user content acceptable.*
    3) Cancelled and relinked ATV to Mac. As soon as the linking code was entered, automatic sync started. Only the one movie was copied, but no music.
*I do not consider this to be normal, expected behaviour.*
    4) When that sync was completed I went and checked all the songs in one album in iTunes as a quick test, then sync'd again. That song was promptly copied to the ATV.
    Progress!
    5) Checked all songs, initiated a new sync and they're being copied as I write.
    Success!
So v2.1 requires music to be manually selected in iTunes in order for automatic sync to work. Anyone not spot a contradiction in terms? Furthermore that was certainly not the case in software versions prior to 2.1, nor was this change communicated in any way I'm aware of to the user.
My conclusion is that this is either a bug, or else sheer thoughtlessness on Apple's part.
But my sincere thanks to those who've helped me to restore proper function to the ATV (well, fingers crossed), a device that I've become very fond of.

  • Is the Zen Touch Mac Compatib

My Cousin has an iMac and i'm visiting him and I was wondering if I could transfer tunes from his computer to my Zen Touch. Also, is the zen touch like the ipod where it will only support syncing with one computer. Where it makes you delete everything on the device before setting up another partnership.

Duh -- probably the same thing the _PC_ makers were thinking back before USB was invented!
I agree -- your childish anti-Mac rant _does_ sound stupid.

  • Zen Touch Sync Is

Recently I installed the firmware update for my Creative Zen Touch. It allowed me to transfer tracks downloaded from file sharing software such as napster with ease from either Napster itself or WMP (Windows Media Player). Approx. two days ago I started trying to transfer downloaded tracks from Napster to my Zen Touch; however, the synchronization was registered but only transferred one of a grouping of prospecti'vely 25 tracks. I tried this again but with a smaller list, and the same exact issue occured. I also tried the WMP; it too registered the synchronization but with this no tracks were transferred. Does anyone know what the problem is?Potentially important info: -I tried transferring music ripped from a CD and that worked fine.-I have not installed Creative Zen Touch Driver Updates; I've been worried to in case that might make the problem worse.

  • How do you backup your Zen Touch (or any other playe

I have some seen posts that suggest that you backup your MP3 player. This sounds like a sensible idea. I own a Zen Touch, and so far have been using WMP 0 exclusi'vely to sync files to my ZT.
Can someone tell specifically how I might backup my ZT (even though I have all my music on my PC, so I probably do not need to do something explicitly)?
I think others might find this backup information useful.

hot_guitar: Backing up is covered in my Nomad Primer, but as Cat intimates, it's just a case of backing up the data. There's no way just to image the player, for example.
lukeg_uk: Similar to hot_guitar, take a look at my Nomad Primer. I think you'll find you can't copy files with DRM back to the PC. I would guess there are guides about backing up the licenses and the files on the PC itself, at least you would hope (and this is one of the irritations about DRM).

  • Zen Touch 40GB and Windows Vista

    Hi-
Apologies for opening a new thread,I can see there have been others on the same subject but cannot make head nor tail of them from the search function.
I have a 40GB Zen touch thats nearly full,I love it,its the best device I've ever had or ever will, can't speak more highly of it but my Windows XP laptop is gone , and the new one came with Vista .
Can anyone tell me how I can either add more music? or even get Vista to recognise my device. I cannot find a driver or software anywhere that will work. so I cannot add anymore new music or even get access to what I already have
    thanks

$A longer-term, but one-time solution for the Zen Touch, Xtra & Micro (and a few, but not most, Sleeks & MicroPhotos) with original Creative PDE drivers and .x.x firmware (read the FAQs for more details):
Find a PC with Windows XP (SP2 or higher) and WMP 0 (not 9, not ). Download & install the Creative PDE drivers from this site. Connect your player. Backup any irreplaceable files to the PC (the next step will reformat your player). Download & install the "PlaysForSure" firmware update (2.x.x) from this site. Restore any files you backed up in step 5. Disconnect your player & uninstall the PDE drivers.<This will update your player to MTP (aka PlaysForSure), which is nati'vely supported in Windows XP (with WMP 0 or ), Vista & 7 without any additional drivers. (MTP drivers are also available from this site for certain older versions of Windows.) WMA DRM files can be transferred via WMP; other files can be transferred using WMP, Windows Explorer, or MTP/PlaysForSure-updated Creative software from this site.
The other post describes a kludge someone used to get an older Zen (with only PDE firmware) to work with Vista; it may or may not work. Creative does not support PDE-firmware players in Vista or 7.

  • Replacement Zen Touch Randomly Disconne

So the first Zen Touch I got several months ago worked fine until about a month ago when it got a hard disk error. I got an RMA and got it replaced. However, the replacement, upon transferring files, would stop after just a few files had been transferred, claiming that the device had been disconnected (it hadn't.) I was using the latest firmware and drivers and the problem persisted in several different transfer methods. So I contacted Creative and they basically told me to get another RMA. So I did that, and uninstalled the drivers. When I got my second replacememnt and reinstalled the latest drivers and firmware, it had the exact same problems. So what could possibly be going wrong?
    Thanks!

    DaLkO,
Is the player currently using firmware version 2.xx.xx? Perhaps you can try these patches.

  • USB 1.1 & Protected WMA on Zen Touch quest

Im thinkin about getting a Zen Touch and i have a couple of questions.
The first im sure i can get an easy yes to, does zen touch support usb .
The second however, is a question that i often find avoided on sites and put in fine print.
Many companies advertise supporting WMA format, but not the <EM>protected</EM> WMA format that music stores such as Musicmatch sell.
My question obviously, is does the Zen Touch player support protected WMA files that i download from Musicmatch?
    Thanks
p.s. Does the Zen Touch have a "shuffle" feature like on the iPod that shuffles all the music or just the music on your playlist?Message Edited by JKORCA on 03-08-2005 0:39 PM

    'Yes' to all three questions:
    USB . compatible - yes.
Can play WMA protected DRM - fairly certain it does, but I've never used it myself - anyone want to confirm?
Shuffle all - yes - there's a button the front labelled 'random' which shuffles all the tracks on the player.

  • Please help a dedicated yet VERY FRUSTRATED Zen Touch U

Please help me!!! I have become very frustrated with my Zen Touch (40GB)(well..only the transferring of songs really...otherwise I think it is one of the best things I ever bought). Has anyone had the following issues..and if so..how have you resolved them?
. When I used the software that came with it (the Media Source I think)...every time I try to transfer tracks it locks up after one track (says that the CPU usage is 00%) so I have to attempt to get out of the program and start it up again...this happens 99.9999% of the time. Are there any other programs out there that are less frustrating. I have re-installed the software numerous times and it is still happening.
    2. I prefer to use Music Match to put my track information in. Unfortunately, it has only recognized my player once..normally it doesnt even know it is connected. Is anyone else using this program..and what do I need to do to get this to work (their support staff hasn't been much of a help)
    3. I have one folder on my hard dri've (in my computer) that has a hand next to it (palm up). The songs in there were ripped from a CD. They are in the folder...but the Media Source program isn't recognizing it. Is there anything I can do to get these files to my player? Also, when I went to e-mail them to my account at work it wouldnt do it..said the file size was 0.0kb (yet, they are on my hard dri've). Any suggestions? Is it protected somehow..and can I unprotect it's LOL
    4. When initially transferring the majority of my files, I noticed that some files weren't transferred. What are the reasons why that might happen?

As SSR said, install all the newest software. The Creative stuff is smart enough to install right over (replace) the older stuff you have now. I have had various problems over the past year with drivers, etc, and every time it was resolved by reloading the software or updating it. There is all new stuff; driver, MediaSource, Nomad Explorer. Download and install all three. Also, download and install the plug-in for yor Zen. That's 4 things.
I'll bet this fixes all your problems.
One thing you said--some tracks don't transfer at all. Is that using MediaSource or Music Match? You have to be careful with DRM tracks that you use software that can handle a DRM license (this is stuff you bought on Yahoo Music, Napster, MSN Music, etc.). It will not transfer using just any old software. MediaSource and WIndows Media Player both work for this purpose.
My personal choice for editing ID3 tag info is Windows Media Player. You can "group select" a whole range of tracks and change them all. You can drag and drop (like songs to an artist or album) and the tags change. It is a super-powerful program.
You may think you'll never use Nomad Explorer, but download and install it anyway. I don't use it, but something in that program updated Windows Media Player 0 and it worked WAY faster after that. Who knows what it did? It's all free, so you might as well.
OOPS, forgot about your MediaSource Library thing. CLick "tools" in MediaSource, then go to the PC Library section. Make sure all the folders you have music in are listed. Also list them in the "media sniffer" tab, if you want them to be updated for changes you make.

  • Zen Touch file manageme

Hi, I just bought a Zen Touch and I want to transfer the song that came with it on my computer but they are locked... Anything I can do?

    DRM protected ??
This mean I can only delete? Because I didn't buy those song or something like that?

  • Zen Touch - WMA Backward Button Prob

I have realized that with WMA songs my Zen Touch crashes when I press the back button to relisten a song. In WMA DRM Songs protected It happen every time, in WMA normal songs some time, but not always.
There is any way to resolve this problem that was not format the player? Is mine or I have to way some firmware upgrade to resolve this problem?

    >> i have this problem with tracks purchased through MSN music in WMP0. firmware .0..3 doesnt fix it.
Thank you for your information, I'm in the same situation. I'll hope that in a future a new release of the firmware resolve it. But on my hand I have only about 30 songs that probably I'll burn to a CD and re-rip with MP3 format.

  • Two Zen Touch Questi

Is there a firmware upgrade available for the Touch that allows for access to its hard dri've via My Computer through a removable dri've? If not, will there be?
How much does the remote with the FM tuner cost for this model?

I don't understand all the comments regarding dri've letter access. Is this driverless access so you could move files around from computer to computer? If not, then I really don't see the disadvantage of using Nomad Explorer. My Zen Touch shows up in Windows Explorer as "Nomad Explorer". If I wanted to copy files to it, I can (I don't). In my experience, using Windows Explorer for music files leads to a really screwed up stucture on the player with corrupted track numbers, etc..
I also did not see any CNet article promising dri've letter access, but since it is not important to me at all, perhaps I overlooked it. I DID see, however, an alleged Creative promise in "October" (assume that is now October 2005?) for MTP support and Janus DRM support.
This support is what I was expecting in the recent firmware upgrade, which must have been pretty technical as I don't really notice any change in my player.
Somebody said the font is smaller on the screen---I don't remember how big it was before, to be honest.

  • Zen Touch No Longer Recognized By Windows Media Pla

<SPAN>My Zen Touch stopping being recognized by Windows Media Player today.<SPAN> I still see the MTP connected icon in the task tray and I still it listed without a warning in Device Manager, but WMP doesn?t recognized that it is attached.<SPAN> I?ve tried different USB ports and a different USB cable.<SPAN> There are no errors in the application log.<SPAN> I reformatting my device and run the cleanup option, but I still can't WMP to see the device.<SPAN> The only changes I can think of is installing IE7 Beta 2 and installing MusicMatch.<SPAN> I?ve since uninstalled MusicMatch, but I still have the problem.<SPAN> Does anyone have any suggestions?<SPAN> Or there a way I can increase the logging so I can get a better idea of what might be failing.

    Hi Ted
I deleted the file and reconnected my device and it quickly grew to 600kb. I'm not sure exactly what you need and there didn't seem to be anything interesting at the end of the log, but I did find the following lines which, from what I can, is from the point when WMP tried to establish a connection with the device and failed.

  • OK, Zen Touch Owners, Listen Up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, when I tried to update the firmware on my Zen Touch to the PlaysForSure update, all of the original firmware was removed, and I could do nothing. This happened to a lot of other users, and most of their solutions seemed to be unique to the secondary computer they used. After searching through several threads, I finally found a solution that worked when nothing else would. Thank you so much Evil_Queen_Lisa for solving the problem: Step - Before you upgrade your firmware, back up your files as they will be lost. If you are here, unfortunately this is probably too late for you, but I figured I'd add it anyway. Step 2 - If you have licensed music - back up your licenses to an external source (like a USB key)->Go to WMP ->Tools ->License Management ->backup ->select your external dri've ->backup Step 3 - Restart your computer Step 4 - In "Add or Remove Programs" with "Show Updates" selected:***Note: you MUST uninstall in this order!!***a)uninstall windows media player , restart when prompted (also refered to as "Rollback" )b)uninstall windows medial player RunTime, restart when promptedc)uninstall Microsoft User-Mode Driver Frameworks Feature Pack .0 (and not something else with a similar name like .NET), restart your computer Step 5 - Download and install windows media format 9.5 RunTime from here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx FamilyId=73C2650F-BE6-4BD6-8408-FD6E7827CD8 Step 6 - In "Add or Remove Programs" with "Show Updates" selected:Uninstall all software and drivers by Creative **Note: If you have a creative sound card (like "audigy" or "soundblaster" ) be carefull not to uninstall it's drivers / software! Restart your computer Step 7 - Plug your zen into its power outlet, and from recovery mode select "clean up" Quick Suggestion by Baffled: With your Zen plugged in, go to Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager and select Portable Devices. Right-click Zen Touch, and select Uninstall. Step 8 - Download the newest driver and the firmware for your Zen from here: (make sure you have the correct player and country) http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/ Step 9 - Install the driver, and plug in your zen when prompted. If a pop up appears asking you what you want to do (ie open with WMP) just click cancel. Step 0 - Open the firmware upgrader ->click upgrade ->follow the instructionsif its successful -> CONGRATULATIONS!!! you are fixed!! I suggest you run your windows update wizard, and reinstall everything once your zen is working properly (it should work fine with WMP ). If this works for you, or doesn't, please post a reply and keep this thread ali've! Any moderators out there, please sticky this. It's a big and frustrating problem, and this is the only solution that appears to work uni'versally (three friends did this too).

Well, from the looks of things, more devices are having problems with firmware updates, without any solutions put forward from the manufacturer. Poor show, Creative.
