Is nVidia GeForce4 compatible with FCP 5?

Hi, I have a Quicksilver G4 (dual 1 Ghz) with a 64 Mb nVidia GeForce4. That's all the "About this Mac" tells me for the AGP slot. I'm not sure if it's a MX, and if so, whether it's the 420, 440, or 460.
I am wondering whether it is compatible with either FCP 5, or FC Express. I'll be editing standard-definition video only. The Apple site only says that it must be compatible with "Quartz Extreme."
If it is compatible, are there FCP processes which would benefit from upgrading it to an nVidia 6600 or 7800, or ATI Radeon 9800? I won't be doing any 3D gaming, only video-editing to the 23" LCD.
Thanks for your kind advice!

" FCP offloads out work for the graphics card to do (eg rendering etc)"
This is completely incorrect
FCP does not use GPU (graphics processor) acceleration, it uses CPU processing only
Motion in comparison does use GPU acceleration:
http://www.apple.com/uk/finalcutstudio/motion/
The only way to get better performance from FCP is to use a better processor than the one you are using.
I replaced the elementary OEM graphics card supplied with the G5 with an Nvidia 6800 card. There is no difference in any respect when using final cut pro between the two cards.
It works great with motion however.

However, be aware that Apple has neither the time nor the incentive to test every camera on the market, so there will be many more models, old and new, that will work perfectly even though they are not on the database.

  • Are these cameras compatible with FCP?

Does anyone out there know if any of these cameras is compatible with Final Cut Pro 5/6? It's not listed on the compatibility list, but I have a hard time believing Sony or Panasonic would make any camcorders that are not compatible with FCP these days. I just want to make sure however, before I buy.

The qualifying devices list is not a good standard to judge by. There are many "devices" that work fine and aren't listed, and conversely, devices that are listed but may not function if the user is also using a certain third-party device; for example, certain listed Canons may indeed work well with FCS2, but attach an external drive to the same FireWire bus and it all goes fubar.

  • Video recorded in QT Pro-compatible with FCP?

Is a video recorded in QT Pro compatible with FCP?
I was getting errors earlier today importing QT video clips recorded in QT Pro.
FCP said "unknown file type" and wouldn't import it.
I tried different decks, different footage, all to no avail.
Drag and drop, file>Import, neither worked.
I never tried this before and was surprised.
It's not that it needed rendering, it just wouldn't import.
QT was set to use the native format of the recording device.
FCP was set to DV NTSC easy set up.
    OS 10.4.7, QT 7.1.2, FCP 5.0.4.
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Now this is strange.
I just downloaded Live Capture Plus to try it out.
It captures the same tape from the same deck with the same settings as I tried in QT.
Imports perfectly into FCP 5.1.1 No problems whatsoever.
Both clips have identical settings in the info pane of QT Pro:
    DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, 720 x 480 (640 x 480), Millions
    16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    29.97
    640 x 480 pixels
Yet the QT clip will not import into FCP with an "unknown file" error.
    Why?
    Thanks

    G5 dual 2 gig   Mac OS X (10.4.7)
    G5 dual 2 gig   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The files open fine in QT player.
640 X 480 was the QT captured frame size, 29.97 fps, and it was captured as "device native" in QT preferences. The source tapes where mini DV/NTSC so its frame size should be 720 X 480.
If this frame size is the problem, why is QT pro recording a 640 X 480 image when the original is 720 X 480? Also, can't FCP handle a 640 X 480 QT video size anyway?
I tried different tapes with different decks and kept coming up with the "file not recognized" error when trying to import into FCP.
    Thanks for your help,

  • Cameras compatible with FCP

Hello everyone. I'm curious to find out if there is a list that apple or FCP puts out that has all the cameras that are compatible with FCP and if it stays current. About a month ago I was at the beach and my home video camera was left unattended, and was drowned by a huge wave. Luckily I didn't take my Sony FX1. (Which is what I originally was going to do) Anyhow, I'm going to go and buy my wife another camera in the $700.00 to $1,000 dollar range and I want to make sure that whatever camera I purchase I can download the footage in FCP 6. Thanks
    Erv

    Indeed.
As a filthy Englishman, I do not celebrate this holiday.
But all the best to you and yours anyway.

  • HT4682 Sony HDR-CX230/B compatible with FCP X

I see that the HDR-CX230 and HDR-CX230E are listed as compatible.  Is the Is the HDR-CX230/B also compatible?

The most accurate way to determine whether a camera works with FCP X is to actually try using it with FCP X.
Download the free 30 day trial of FCP X and find out for yourself
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/trial/
Note that you will need Mavericks  .  .  .  your info suggests you are still using Snow Leopard.
P.S.  As the HDR-CX230/B is a bog-standard consumer camcorder it will almost certainly work with FCP X.
New camcorders are appearing all the time and Apple has neither the time nor the incentive to test them  .  .  .  the list of compatible cameras is essentially a waste of time and should be ignored.

  • M-Audio FireWire Solo - appropriate for what I need? Compatible with FCP?

    Hey all:
I'm shooting a video short next week with a DVX100. Eventually I'll need to do some voice over work in my... "studio." I have mics but need a preamp. The M-Audio Firewire Solo fits the budget comfortably. My minimum requirements are one XLR input and Phantom Power, which it has.
I'm just wondering if anyone has advice against the decision. I have very little experience with audio interfaces. Anything I should be watching out for? Any other suggestions? My budget tops out at $400US or so, but I don't want to overdo it, either. I'm not looking for something that will perform things I may need in the future, I just need a quality, compatible, reliable preamp.
    Thanks in advance, everyone.
    Michael

I teach in a school that uses Tapco Mix60 mixers (http://www.tapcoworld.com, approx $60) with FCP with great success. So much so, I bought one for use at home with my rig.
True, the whole path is analog. But using the speaker/microphone jacks on the back of a G5 work well. So far with about 30 students using the systems we have had no problems. Just buy some Hosa cables (Mini to 1/4” Phone Stereo Breakout) from your favorite supplier to connect the Mac to the mixer. Add a microphone and you are all set.
As a side note, I generally use Soundtrack Pro to record voice overs. It seems a little easier and I have access tools to make me, or talent, sound better.

  • Is Mt. Lion (10.8) OS compatible with FCP 7 and other FCP Studio 3 apps?

    I am currently running Lion (10.7.5) on a 27" iMac 3.4 Ghz.
Is Mt. Lion compatible with Final Cut Pro 7 and FCS 3 studio apps like Compressor 3.5, Color and DVDSP4? Will these programs still run or will they be not supported by the new OS as has been the case with past apps when a new OS is introduced?
    Thanks,
    Phil

    Greetings Phil;
Glad to hear that the transition has gone well and that you're enjoying the new OS features!  I have FCP X on all of the machines in my edit bay, but at this point I work exclusively with Final Cut Studio.
When FCP X was launched, in it's initial form it simple didn't work with the my workflow and the amount of work that I have to deal with on a daily basis.  Also there was(for me a least) a BIG learning curve in order to make the transitiion.  It was time that I didn't have...and still don't!  Also I'm sort of an "old dog" in this game and learning the new system hasn't been a priority for me.
I would encourage you to move forward with it.  I know that Apple has made huge improvements in the software since it's initial release.
I wish you the best in you work...

Is the latest nvidia driver (280.26) compatible with MacBook Pro 6,2 model)? Boot Camp 4.0 comes with the 262.41 nvidia driver, but I'd like to upgrade to the latest 280.26. The official 280.26 driver page on the nvidia site says that GeForce GT 330M is compatible, but in the footnote is written this thing:
Notebooks supporting Hybrid Power technology with Intel chipsets are not supported by this release
Do you think this is the case of MacBook Pro 6,2 model? Can I upgrade the driver without any problem?

  • Is quicktime 7.5 compatible with FCP 3.0.4?

    Hi,
I'm using Quicktime 6.5.3 on the below computer, running FCP 3.0.4. Recently I've wanted to upgrade my Quicktime to version 7.5 for Panther (10.3.9). Would this Quicktime upgrade cause any problems with FCP 3.0.4?
(I know I'm using old versions, but they work just fine for my purposes.)
If anyone know, thanks very much!
    Cheers

    DON'T DO IT!
Stick with current QT. FCP3 works best with QT 6.2...should be ok with 6.5 if you're running OS X.3.9 as your specs state. See this list for best combos...

If you need QT 7.5 for other reasons, you might set up a dual boot system. Search this forum for ways to do that.

  • Is the new MacBook pro with nvidia 650m compatible with autodesk alias and 3ds?

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me if the new MacBook pro is compatible with autodesk products?
Alias requires open gl 2.00. Is this supported with the graphics card?

The GT650 should be compatible with OpenGL 3.x or even 4.x depending upon Apple's drivers. As for the software in general it should work if compatible with Lion and 10.7.4. However, the software cannot yet take full advantage of the Retina display.

  • Is a .VOB video format compatible with FCP

I have been sent a DVD with .VOB format which I have imported into FCP, but there is no sound.
Is this non compatible, or have I done something wrong?

when you use "open" "video TS" and select a VOB file in your DVD --pick up any one- , the program should ask whether you want to open all files ?
Do you get this message ?
if yes your DVD is probably not protected.
If you use DVDxdv, and your disk is protected, you should see green squares on the screen when you open files and get weired sound.

  • Decent HD camcorder compatible with FCP?

I really need to get an HD camcorder and the most important thing for me is easy compatibility with Macs and uploading to Final Cut Pro X, which I have. My budget is under $600, so obviously how good the HD quality is is not the priority here. I've looked at the Canon Vixia line and the Sony Handycam HDR-CX line, but the Vixias are really expensive and I've heard Sonys dont get along with Macs. I could get a Vixia if I look into it more, as I really like and trust Canon. However, my main question is which camcorders will work BEST with Final Cut Pro, because from all my research and what I've heard (I've literally been researching camcorders for the past 4 months) you have to like convert files to get HD video to FCP, which I don't understand at all so a camcorder that at least simplifies this process while uploading or forgoes it altogether would be very awesome, but I'm not sure this exists. ANYWAYS, I really need some recommendations as to which camcorder is best for my situation, because I've searched to the ends of the Earth and frankly I'm getting sick of looking. I just need answers. I don't have super picky requirements, just a DECENT at least HD camcorder which is not gonna make me broke and that works well with Mac products and Final Cut Pro. Any ideas?

the above will give you a start as to camcorders/cameras that will work with fcpx directly.
The best advice I got when I was shopping was to save money for an external mic. I finally got one and found it to be wonderful for interviews etc.
