Is OpenOffice 2.0 appropriate for OS X 10.3.9?

I want to download OpenOffice 2.0 from www.openoffice.org. On their download page they say it is for 10.2+, but in their SETUP_GUIDE.pdf, it says "There are some modules available for OpenOffice that require Java 1.5 to work. On a Mac you also require Mac OS X 10.4 (aka Tiger)". It is not clear to me whether this contradicts the downloads page and means I need tiger to use OpenOffice 2.0 or if this applies just to those modules for which you need Java 1.5.
If anyone has any experience with this, here's a few questions:
(1) can I safely download this to my Mac using OS X 10.3.9? Will it be usable?
(2) Can anything go so drastically wrong that I could destroy the normal use of my Mac? (I don't have much experience maintaining home computers and tend to be cautious since there's so many horror stories reported in these discussion groups.)
(3) any idea which modules require Java 1.5? I want OpenOffice primarily for word processing (to be able to edit basic M/S Word files).
(4)I'm aware that NewOffice is also available and that it is built upon OpenOffice 1.1.4. -- I've heard that OpenOffice 2.0 is MUCH better than 1.1.4. Any opinions out there about the relative strengths of OpenOffice 2.0 v NewOffice?

Open Office 2.0 for OS X requres 10.2 or higher and the X11 system installed.
NeoOfficeJ is a Java based version of Open Office and does not require the X11 system.
Open Office comes with the basic suite plus a database app. NeoOfficeJ does not include the database app. NeoOffice is written in Jave so it is much slower than the native Open Office.
(Most of the "horror" stories you read about are self-inflicted.)

  • Create a new document with settings appropriate for SWF or XFL output.

I'm studying up for the CS4 ACE exam, and I'm stumped on something. In the "Laying out a Document" section, it says: "Create a new document with settings appropriate for SWF or XFL output." There isn't really anything specific to creating a document for flash, except that you wouldn't add bleed. I can't find anything online that addresses this. Am I missing something here? Any document can be exported to SWF or XFL. This seems rather ambiguous. What is there to know about this?

You're right that any document can be exported to SWF or XFL. I'm not sure what you're going to be asked on the ACE exam, but here are some resources:

  • What monitors are currently most appropriate for print jobs?

Hi, I'm a free lance graphic designer for 20 years already and have always used Aperture Grid CRT Trinitron monitors as the most accurate for creating color jobs for print. I bought my last set of monitors Sony's Multiscan G420 in 2001. While they are still pretty accurate, they are aging and I'm thinking of buying new monitors. At that time - 2001, when I purchased my monitors there were a few other technologies like Shadow mask and LCD which were not good at all for creating graphic design color jobs for print.
I'm not sure if they still sell Aperture Grid CRT monitors anymore and would like to find out what monitors/monitor technology is currently most appropriate for print jobs?
I will greatly appreciate your tips.

I'd go with a Sony, Samsung, or Sharp LCD and use it as a monitor, then professionally calibrate it.
Viola, you have quality, resolution, saturation, accuracy, dependability, all in one

  • What SAP module is more appropriate for my background?

    HI,
I'm very interested to join a SAP course in India but i'm really not making any decision so far. which module is more suitable for me and my background.
I have done my Master in "computer science" and my undergrad in "Education in computer". I've asked some guys and some have advised me to go for Basis or BI. I'm telling you that I have no experience in SAP world but I'll take a step further to join the most appropriate course that meets my background.
    my Questions are:
    - Any requirements to study SAP Basis/BI module in an authorized institute?
    - What do u suggest me to study?
    plz share your experience :):):)

BTW, I'd like to get some advices about my situation:
i'm interested to enter into SAP world but i duno which way is more appropriate for me:
1- join a course in a non-authorized institute in India for about 2 months (2 h/day) then join SIEMENS institute (8 h/day) which is authorized then do the exam to be a SAP certified consultant. [a long way, total of studying is 3 months, will cost a bit more]
2-  join a course in SIEMENS institute then do the exam to be a SAP certified consultant. [short period .. just 1 month, intensive]
    Things to bear in mind:
    - no experience in SAP world.
    - the aim of studying in a non-authorized institute is to enter into SAP world and make sure if the module is suitable for u or need to switch to another one. studying in a non-institute is a bit cheap.
what do u recommend me to do?
    cheers,

  • What is AIR not appropriate for?

What type of software would be unsuitable for AIR? Would
hardware or CPU intensive software be better developed using
traditional programming languages? Would some software run better
as a Windows application than an AIR application? I don't have
specific examples, but I'm wondering what kind of software would
not be the best choice for use with AIR.

AIR apparently is not appropriate for Value Added Resale
either. M$ makes a fortune allowing you to extend and build upon
their Office Application suite by using there development tools to
tack on custom functionality, provide solutions and build useful
    applications.
AIR is apparently not in that ballpark. AIR cannot be used to
extend the CS3 application suite. There are no interfaces for
accessing any of CS3's imaging, or other functionality or to build
any VAR solutions with any Adobe applications. Each Adobe
application uses similar but not fully compatible interfaces to
expose and extend functionality. There is some support for PDF
files but not in the sense of building value added functionality.
For instance, if you intend to build a medical imaging and
reporting application for a workstation using features of photoshop
for enhancement and InDesign to automate custom report generation,
you can do this using Microsoft high level development tools like
Visual Basic to interface with Adobe's products than you are with
Adobe AIR development tools to interface with their own
    products.

  • Appropriate for 3 PCs and 2 Macs?

I have 6 computers to deal with -- 1 MacBook Pro, 1 Mac Mini, 3 desktop PCs and 1 PC Laptop. The macs are both running Snow Leopard, and the PCs are Windows 7. I need a server to manage all my backups, and have been so happy with my Mac Mini that I am strongly considering getting the 2010 Mac Mini Server.
I've been working with computers for 30 years, but am toally new to server software, so I have some BIG questions:
    1. Would the Mac Mini Server be appropriate for my needs? Windows server is a work in progress, and I'm not encouraged by what I hear. All I really want is ONE machine that can receive my Time Machine backups, and can hold my backups from the Windows machines. NOTE: My main machines are both PCs.
    2. Does Mac X Server has specific software for backing up and restoring Win 7 PCs? If not, does 3rd party software like Acronis play nice with it?
    3. Would I be better off using an NAS server like the Synology DS210+?

Thanks, I'll check out that software -- looks promising and they have a free trial period. I'm really unclear as to what Mac Mini Server provides that the plain Snow Leopard Mac Mini does not.

  • Is Macbook Air (2013) appropriate for music production?

I heard from a friend that the macbook air does not have an audio interface port. I'm not sure what this means, but I'm purchasing a macbook to be my overall computer for normal day-to-day tasks as well as to produce music (via logic pro). I'm just wondering if he is reffering to the firewire port which is absent on Macbook Airs or if there is something else that I am unaware of. I'm leaning towards the Air because I don't need a whole lot of processing power, and I plan to travel a lot in the upcoming year (Europe), so portability is a must. Anyway i won't be producing massive electronic tracks or anything like that. More along the lines of indie/alternative music that probably wouldn't ever go more than 10-15 tracks. Most likely I'd stay in the area of 5-8 layered tracks. I don't really want to spend any more that $1500. I won't be gaming on this device, I really just want it for normal tasks, minor video editing, and recording/mixing, etc.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

He probably means 1/4'' port. It does have 3.5mm standard stereo port. The MBA would be appropriate for your planned usage.

  • Openoffice with VB support for Arch?

I found this article very interesting:

It tells us there are serveral distros that have a version of OpenOffice available that supports vb.
Is it possible to get such a version for Arch?
That would make using Arch/Openoffice at the office an even better experience.

  • Is ARD 3.0 appropriate for a family tech guy helping parents in the burbs ?

I'm the resident tech guru of the family. When everyone was home for the holidays I was able to help them out by having them bring their computers to me. Now I'm back in my apartment in the city and my parents are having troubles with their new computer 40 miles away in the suburbs. Is Apple remote desktop an appropriate thing to install when I need to visually walk her through an installation procedure? Also, I'll be using ARD over the internet, and my parents have their macs behind a NAT router. Has anyone been in the situation I'm in and how have you made it work?
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8) ARD Parental Help
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   ARD Remote Parental Help

Is Apple remote desktop an appropriate thing to install when I need to visually walk her through an installation procedure?
It's probably overkill when all you probably want to do is to be able to take control of your parents' system. Try the freeware VNC, which allows you to take control of a system. Mac OS X 10.4 already has a VNC client built in, so all you should need is a VNC application for your system. Chicken of the VNC is one that many people use with success (don't be thrown by the terminology; with VNC, the "admin" application is usually referred to as the client and the VNC on the system you're taking control is referred to as the "server", but it's what you need).
You'll have to set up your network and the network at your parents' house appropriately. On your end, any router/firewall has to pass port 5900, and the NAT device at your parents' house also has to have port 5900 open and forwarded to your parents' computer's internal IP address. Then you enter the IP address of the NAT into ARD.
This has, BTW, been covered her many times, so if you have additonal questions, you might want to search through this forum for "Internet" and you should find a number of threads on the issue. You can also search the Mac OS X Networking form for "VNC".

  • What certification scenario is appropriate for our product

    HI,
We have a product which is a cloud based Web Portal that interacts with SAP. Our Portal does not directly talk to SAP but there are SAP ABAP programs that call our the portal functionality through HTTP protocol. We do not use SAP Netweaver Portal. We were wondering what certification scenario is appropriate to get this certified.
    Regards
    S

    Hi Giang,
Your application can still qualify for a Packaged Composite Application (PCA) (The name xApp is reserved for SAP applications and PCA is an equivalent for 3rd-party developed xApps). For example, if you use one or more SAP composition tools such as, Composite Application Framework, Guided Procedure or Visual Composer to develop your PCA.
I suggest that you apply for a PCA certification by using the <a href="http://www.sap.com/partners/howtopartner/application/">link</a> so that we can better help you.
    Regards,
    Mustafa.

  • Jms appropriate for this? + related questions

    Hello
so we currently have 2 separate systems.
On the external system usesr can enter info into a db.
On the internal site, a process runs every 15 minutes to pull all new entries on the external site db into the internal site db.
I am about to suggest that jms be used to replace that process, because
    1. it seems appropriate
    2. the current process is buggy.
the client is extremely worried about security. Are there any known jms vulnerabilities that can be exploited if a firewall port is left open for JMS? (of course, a port is currently left open for the existing process, but I have to ask...)
from my understanding of jms, if an insert fails on the internal side, we can shunt the messages off to an error queue, and use jmx to try and reinsert. Is that correct?
Is there any way to stop an MDB from reading more messages off the Q if there is an error?
    thanx

Are there any known jms vulnerabilities that can be exploited if a firewall port is left open for JMSYou'll have to check with the JMS vendor you decide upon. Industrial strength implementations like MQ allow you to encrypt traffic between the two systems using digital certificates, which makes things about as secure as you're likely to get.
if an insert fails on the internal side, we can shunt the messages off to an error queue, and use jmx to try and reinsert. Is that correct?JMS is just a specification. You have to decide how you want to handle errors then write your code accordingly. Some general principles that may help...
Treat business errors and system errors differently. A business is one where the data is invalid, e.g. field too long for a database column. It doesn't matter how many times you attempt to reinsert the message it will always fail. The only way to handle this error is to fix the message or fix the data in the database.
Technical errors are things like network outages which can be recovered from. In this case it may be a good idea to keep retrying the message, but also raise some kind of alert.
Error queues can be a great idea in some circumstances, but you need to consider whether message order is important. What happens if update 1 gets moved to an error queue and update 2 is inserted before update 1 was applied. Is your data still valid?
You also need to think about transactionality. Unless the entire transaction (from remote db to local db) occurs in a distributed transaction you will always run the risk of lost or duplicate messages. Will duplicate creates be rejected? will duplicate (and out of sequence) updates cause problems? Can you afford to lose the occaisional message?
These problems aren't unique to messaging and if they haven't been thought about could explain why your current system is buggy.
Is there any way to stop an MDB from reading more messages off the Q if there is an error? Don't know about this one (maybe with JMX). You can certainly do the equivalent if you write your one JMS Listeners (just stop the connection), or if you use a middleware product such as IBM Message Broker (WBIMB).
Last thing to think about is that while JMS is a reasonable solution for this type of problem there must be data synchronisation tools out there to do this type of thing for you.
