Is Oracle Forms is going to its death in two years???

Some people say, that Oracle is planning to kill Oracle Forms because it is "dead-borned" project.
IS IT TRUE???

meant to add....
However, we recognise that Client Server support is important for our existing customer base, so 6i, in Client Server mode, will remain supported until 2006 (with extended support available until 2008). So, even if you are embarking on a fresh Client Server development now, it has a potential of 7 years of life under a supported product, and, as we know from our experience of the Forms 3.0 user base, potentially many years beyond that.
We feel that the majority of our customer base is moving towards web deployment and this is where we must satisfy the demand. Yes, a large number of organisations run Client Server today, but most new developments are being aimed at web deployment and so new versions of Forms must and will address this market.

When is Oracle Forms 11 going to be released?

Due to Sarbanes-Oxley Act regulations regarding revenue recognition Oracle has decided to not give out release dates with higher precision than 12 months. The current planned release date for Oracle Weblogic Server Suite 11g (which is the edition that will contain Oracle Forms and Reports) is calendar year 2009.

  • New features I like Oracle to include in Oracle Forms

I believe Oracle Form is the best tool to develop Database Application in Oracle Database. The weakness I see in Oracle Forms 10g may be its deployment as Java Applet. Java Applets are to be downloaded in the client browser, that's why it's not lightweight as PHP/ ASP/JSP scripting technology. So as a true web application it is not really handy.
Oracle provides JDeveloper/ Apex to accomplish that. But JDeveloper is very complicated to understand and Apex is rigid and you have little freedom on your user interface design, you cannot design a page as freely as you do in Adobe Dreamweaver for PHP. We as Form developer want oracle to develop a new development tool with following features:
    1. Language will be PL/SQL.
    2. There will be simple drag and drop interface design.
    3. It will generate HTML/JSP page so that it can be light weight.
    4. Provide a wide range of packages to accomplish javascripts/ajax while using PL/SQL language. Developer will just know what to do and by what technology javascripts/ajax, and accordingly invoke packages from withing PL/SQL editors.
    5. Will have good old simple look in Form Development (JDeveloper is so complex and Apex is so shy in revealing it's features) while having same even better inner strength of developments.
    6. Will require no client side tool like jinitiator or jre
    7. Better and easy or even no use of web_util package but still accomplish file/image/spreadsheet access

  • Installing Oracle Forms on Linux

    Dear all,
I'm trying to install Oracle Forms but stumbling upon its perquisites. My machine is Linux Slackware 13.0 64 and I've been trying to install Developer Suite but it failed since my Linux version is not supported.
    My question is:
    1. Can I modify (or cheat on) Universal Installer setup so that it let me install on Slackware?
    2. I also looked at Fusion Middleware requirements and it also supports only Linux Oracle, Suse, or Redhat. Is there any workaround to install the software without changing my OS?
    Best regards,
    Val

You can just copy the relevant parts (the ones marked with error). You can also look at the timing
when it happened the reports environment did not start.
From what i remember this could be a memory issue, standard every managed server (WLS_FORMS and WLS_REPORTS) instance
is configured with 1024m bytes of memory.
What we did is first install a forms instance and after that a reports instance. After the forms installation we adjusted the
memory parameters in setWLSEnv (<middleware-home>/user_projects/domains/<domain-name>/bin). Look in this file
    for references to WLS_FORMS (something similar to: if [ "${SERVER_NAME}" = "WLS_FORMS" ] ; then).
Another thing which springs to my mind is, which products did you select. If you just want Forms and Reports
you can select just the following:
    - Oracle Forms
    - Oracle Reports
    - Developer Tools aan.
    - Management Components
    - Oracle HTTP Server
    and deselect the other options:
    - Oracle Portal
    - Oracle Discoverer
    - Oracle WebCache
    - Clustered (if you are not using clustering)
We also had to fix the following files (i do not think that you have to do this since your Forms did not show any problems):
    - (On Windows) Copy the file msvcr71.dll (FMW/windows/extra) to WINDOWS/system32.
    - Copy the file mod_wl_ohs.so (FMW/<operating-system>/extra) to <middleware-home>/as_1/ohs/modules.

  • Calling a Database Procedure from an Oracle Form

    Hi,
I have a question we will be calling the procedure from an Oracle form and through that can we pass like 1000 input values to this procedure and we need to return certain values back to the Oracle Form also. Here the proceduere take two or more parameters. Please advice.
To receive the input values we have the input parameter of the procedure as type object, so that we can receive multiple parameter values.
    Thanks and Regards

  • Copy/Paste functionlity is not working in oracle forms 11g

    Hi All,
We are using custom built big application (oracle 11g/forms 11g).
    1. And few user are not able to copy/paste from oracle forms 11g to winword. And its random sometime they can ,sometime they can't .
    2. If they have problem means they have copy/paste issue and (When we close application and run it again it is working fine)
3.it's random we are not able to re-produce in development environment.
What i noticed both user have problem and both are using left hand mouse ,generally we use left/right they are using right/left.
    Here the Environment Detail:
    Java runtime :1.6.0_26
    Weblogic server
    oracle forms 11g
So just wondering is there any changes required. Seniors/Guru please advise.
    Thanks!

It is very important to make clear which direction you are going. If you are not able to copy from Forms and paste to an external application, this could be any one or more of the following:
    1. There is a problem with the JRE. Consider uninstalling ALL currentlly installed JREs and install the latest supported version 1.6.0_33
    2. There may have been an issue with the Forms version you are using. Be sure you are using 11.1.1.6 or 11.1.2.0. If not, install the latest patch.
    3. The JRE was unable to properly identify or store the digitial signature in the Forms jar file or one which you included (custom code). If you are using any customer jar files, ensure that they have been properly signed. Also be sure that JRE cache is being stored on the local client machine and not a remote location as this is not supported. If you have not altered the default, the cache is stored in the user's home directory under Application Data (AppData for Win7)
    4. Could be a mouse driver issue. Go to the mouse vendor's web site and get the latest driver for that mouse. Do not use the MS drivers.
    Example:
    C:\Users\<USER NAME>\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache
    So, recommendations:
    1. Uninstall all JRE versions currently installed. Install 1.6.0_33
    2. Ensure that you are using 11.1.1.6 or 11.1.2.0
    3. Clear the JRE cache. To do this close ALL open browsers and open the Java Control Panel. Look on the General tab for Temporary Internet Files > Settings > Delete Files > Ok
    4. Install the latest mouse driver.
    5. Retest

  • Query execution taking longer time in Oracle form 10g !!

    Hi,
I'm generating a report through Oracle form ( forms 10g) and its taking 3-4 hours to finish. But when I run the same report query in (Oracle 11g) database, it gets executed in less than 40 mins.
The form takes only from and to date as input.
I tried hardcoring the date in the Oracle Form and then the report takes only 40 mins to generate.
I tried various approaches like changing the datatypes of form variable and correspondingly changing the query, but met with no success.
When the report in run through the form , we can see the query getting run in backend for nearly 3 hrs !!! tats really confusing !!
Please let me know, if anybody got any idea on this problem??

    Hi,
Even I am facing the same problem above. I am trying to fetch results from a cursor which has subquery running over the db link and placing the results set in a csv file using client_io package. When I run the cursor directly from database (11G), it takes not more than 3-4 min to get the results back. But when I run the same cursor via oracle forms 10G, the query in local database keep on waiting for hours to get results from remote database with "SQL*Net message from dblink". Session on local database remains in active status with state as "Waiting" while the session on remote database goes inactive with state as waiting for event "SQL*Net message from client"
This is confusing me since the same query when ran directly from backend fetches results soon.
Please let me know if anyone can help here
    Thanks

  • Accesing Java Sever Page from Oracle forms 9i

    hello,
i implemented a form with one button, one bean area..
after pressing that button, i have display one jsp file in that bean area...
can anyone give me what r the requirements....
if possible give one example... very urgent..
    Naresh

    Hi ,
Thanks for replying. Let me explain the issue again.
I have my Forms application in Oracle Forms 10g using Forms builder 10.1.2 and deployed on the Oracle Application Server 10.1.2
I have got this java utility that is a bunch of jsp/html files and jar files and basically what this utilty does calls the scanner and transfer scanned image to the DB. This is an indepent java project I got from outsource and not deployed to an EAR or anything.
Now from one of my Forms, I want to call this utility and I think to get this independent utility to run I have to call its index.jsp. So I think we do this using web.show_document. Also I have to make sure the security is maintained. So the user who logs in should only use this jsp.
If I get this utility to work in a seperate browser then I can do the necessary actions and close it and return back to my form.
But my questions, the utility is a bunch of loose jsps and jar files so where do I place these files in the Application server so that my Form can call it using a url.
    2) How do I achieve the secure access to the jsp as well
    3) How do I pass the parameters to this jsp.
I have not run the jsp from my desktop so don't know that either. This utility has to be placed on the Application Server itself becauseits going to be used by many users.
    Please help.
    Thanks

  • Migrating Oracle Forms 6i application to 9i

    Hi,
I have a (Client/Server) application which was developed using Oracle Forms 6i and Reports 6i and would like to migrate this application into Forms 9i & Reports 9i. Where can I find the migration instructions or manuls?. Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ravi.

Check also otn.oracle.com/formsupgrade. And as a final point I would not recommend going to 9i - its desupported - upgrade to 10g (10.1.2) of Forms

  • How long is Oracle Forms/Developer Suite to be supported?

    Hi.
I'm just curious how long Oracle are committed to supporting or creating new versions of Oracle Forms Developer / Developer Suite. I've heard, from one or two sources, that the intention is to abandon forms, and move the focus completely to Jdeveloper some time soon...
Is this true? does anyone know anything different?

Here we are again whith that question...
I'm a senior forms developer (and to make a little humour i've just recently learned designer...)
I think the confusion comes also from "J2EE Application Development for Forms and Designer Developers" which can make us thinking oracle is pushing up to J2EE and prepare us for the Dead of Forms RIP ...
And also that forms developer like me are a little bit afraid because they probably have no skills in J2EE.
But for me it is clear now.
There is no reason to migrate Forms to J2EE with whatelse tool can be sell to you.
I tried some demos in the past with such tools and it makes me laugh, converting a simple master detail forms dept/emp.
What can such tools make with very complex forms and logic ?
But the question is if I had to create a new application will i still do it with Forms ?
And the answer (for me) is no, especially when I see what the next Jdeveloper 11g will be able to do (I tried the fusion order demo and i was really impressed)
You say "I've invested so much time in learning, and becoming proficient at Oracle Forms..."
And so did I but I bought the book "Oracle JDeveloper 10g for Forms and PL/SQL Developers" and I study it page after page to enter the ADF world and upgrade my knowledge.
So Forms or J2EE it is your choice and i will not post the link to the SOD (francois did it) but Forms can also live in a SOA world http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/forms/pdf/10gR2/forms-soa-wp.pdf
but we, forms developers, we must not only focus on forms and its death, but also go ahead and invest so much time we did to learn forms in learning J2EE, BPEL and etc etc.
    Hope this can help
    Jean-Yves
ps : relating to older post, forms was dead each time a new version of the appServer was comming :o)

  • Translate Existing Oracle forms application

    Hi,
I would like to know about approach i should take to convert existing oracle forms(forms6i) application and db to cater for multiple languages ,
actually the approach which i am taking is to convert forms resources(labels, texboxe) to various languages(using forms windows API) from whatever there in database. But the main issue is about db ,so can anyone help me out that.....
As far as discussion with few people ...as per them its better to create db in UTF8 characterset and that will cater all languages.
Please let me know whether this approach will work or not ....
    Regards,
    Sandeep

As client is not going to upgrade ,but still he wants to make existing application multilingual....
so is there any way out.

I have double checked all the configurations but not getting the result, I have run webutil_demo file and now getting following error, but i dont know that is it due to wrong cofiguration(but i have checked all files now several times) or due to some other reason, please if anybody can assist me.
The error i am getting when i run webutil_demo file is.
    oracle.forms.webutil.cApi.CApiFunctions bean not found.

Those packages are owned by SYS, so if you are logged in as any other user you will not be able to see or access them. So log in as SYS and decide how you want to allow access to other users. You can either grant EXECUTE to public or a specific user or you can use a variety of other options. Oracle recommends, as an example, that you create a "webutil" user and grant permission to that user. This would be the user that gets the webutil sql script run against it and become the user that can run the webutil enabled forms (e.g. webuti_demo.fmx). Obviously, this is just an example and you can grant the permission and install the webutil tables where ever you'd like.
Having said that, understand that the error you posted has nothing to do with these packages. Although they are needed for file upload/download functionality and in order to successfully compile webutil.pll (into webutil.plx) they play no role in the error you reported. Your current issue is the result of only one or more of the following (I will assume you are trying to run webutil_demo, which is a known working form):
    1. You have not included the webutil configuration as I originally mentioned
    2. You have not compiled the form (fmx) correctly. Refer to the following:
    http://www.oracle.com/webapps/online-help/forms/10g/topics/web_util/using.htm
    3. For whatever reason, frmwebutil.jar was not successfully downloaded. This can be determined by reviewing the java console on the client. It may be necessary to enable a trace level higher than the default in order to note the download occurring in the console.
If you are not at all familiar with WebUtil or Forms, I recommend you read the documentation. If you do not become familiar with how this works, simply getting it working isn't going to be of much value, especially if you are actually attempting to create a real application for production use and not just teaching yourself something new.
