Is Oracle free for science?

Hi
Can anyone explain me is Oracle RDBMS free for scientific research (because research is non-commercial and non-production)?
Thank you in advance

Licensing questions really need to be addressed to Oracle Sales. Any answers we provide here are not binding on Oracle. And if there is ever a question in the future, relying on advice from "some guy on the internet" is probably not a position you want to be in.
When you download software from OTN, you agree to a license. You'll want to read that carefully
http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/popup-license/standard-license.html
Based on my (very unofficial) reading of the clause
"If you use the application you develop under this license for any internal data processing or for any commercial or production purposes, or you want to use the programs for any purpose other than as permitted under this agreement, you must contact us, or an Oracle reseller, to obtain the appropriate license."
I would tend to assume that your application would be used for "internal data processing," and would thus require a license.
Of course, if you have less than 4 GB of data, you could always use the totally free express edition.

  • Is Oracle free for Linux?

Thought I ask, I'm just learning.
    if so which one?

No it's not. You have to pay for it. You can use the OTN versions you download from Oracle only for evaluation purposes

  • Is oracle 9i for Sun is free

    Hi,
Is oracle 9i for Sun is free, or it is just free
    for limited amount of time.
I have heard that actually Oracle product is free,
but only the support is the actual licence.
    Thanks.
    Sincerely,
    Viji

No, as a member of OTN, you may download the software for personal/development use. The actual license for production or commerical use you have to pay for.
Click on the downloads icon, select the software you want then read the license agreement very carefully.

  • Is the Oracle database free for private persons?

Is the Oracle database free for private developers, just testing the database, or do I have to personally contact them in order to pay them? I just went to the Oracle download page and downloaded 2 pcs. 1 GB install files, installed the database on my Windows 7 machine and then started using it.

Did you pay heed to the license agreement you accepted before downloading the software ? The usage restrictions are spelled out clearly.

  • Oracle license for Linux (It's free?)

    Hi,
I had PostGresql database installed on my Linux machine. And have MS Access database from Windows 98 connect to the PostGresql database. For some reason it is too slow. So I decided to try Oracle for Linux, and I heard peoples told me that Oracle for Linux is free. I had used Oracle in windows environment, and It's very fast. So probably oracle on linux machine and have MS Access connect to it using ODBC should be fast too.
My point is Oracle for Linux is free? and for how long, and for how many concurrent users? To install it, should I download it from the Oracle web site, or should I install it from a CD-ROM?
    Thanks,
    Sany

by my understanding, Oracle for linux is free for development purpose only. you can use it as long as you are using it only for development. howver, you have to buy proper licenses if you want to deploy it in a production env.
Oracle 8i is several hundreds Meg in size. depending on your internet connection, you may want to request a free CD.

  • Oracle XE, is it really free for commercial use?

    Hi All,
I have tried to read and understand the licensing terms of Oracle XE.
    Still want to ask experts,
Is it free for commercial use?
If I develop a product and distribute Oracle XE packaged with my product, charging the customer for my product, but not paying anybody for XE, is that legal?
If I want to develop and use a in-house application in XE is that legal as well?
    Thoughts please.
    Thanks in advance

I would start by looking at Oracle information - while we can provide hints and give guidance, Oracle is the only legal source for license information.
My suggestion in general is to use the Oracle site and the Oracle docs, and take a hard copy of that information as backup in case of legal challenges.
That said, the intent for XE is to provide a 'no license fee to put into production' version of Oracle Database Server. It has limited functionality (no Java in DB, limited storage and memory) so it is not generally a worry for Oracle. The supporting references are
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/express-edition/overview/index.html - which says "It's free to develop, deploy, and distribute; ..." and
"Oracle Database XE is a great starter database for:
Developers working on PHP, Java, .NET, XML, and Open Source applications
DBAs who need a free, starter database for training and deployment
Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and hardware vendors who want a starter database to distribute free of charge
Educational institutions and students who need a free database for their curriculum
as well as http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17781_01/license.112/e18068/toc.htm, in which we read
    "License Rights
We grant you a nonexclusive, nontransferable limited license to use the programs for: (a) purposes of developing, prototyping and running your applications for your own internal data processing operations; (b) you may also distribute the programs with your applications; (c) you may use the programs to provide third party demonstrations and training; and d) you may copy and distribute the programs to your licensees provided that each such licensee agrees to the terms of this Agreement. • Whether the Oracle 8i for linux is free for business purpose?

if we implement an application with Oracle 8i for linux. And the we will sell the application. whether we must pay the Oracle 8i for linux?

I think the oracle so called their datebase can't use to profit include two perspect:
First, you can't use oracle for linux in bussiness directly.Such as a compnay use oracle on linux as his database platform.
second, you can't use oracle for linux as development platform or run platform and you product used for bussiness perpose.
The above two item certainly uner unauthorized conditions. If you get authorized oracle on linux, you can use it as you want.

The first issue I see is that Oracle 10.2.0.1 was never certified with DG4ODBC 11. Only 10.2.0.4 or 10.2.0.5 can be used as the Oracle database HS kernel requires a gateway compatibility patch and this patch is included in 10.2.0.4 or 10.2.0.5 Oracle database patch set.
Then another error in the trace is that for each column description you have an error:
hgopoer, line 233: got native error 0 and sqlstate HY091; message follows...
    [Microsoft][ODBC Visual FoxPro Driver]*Descriptor type out of range* {HY091}
    Exiting hgopoer, rc=0 at 2012/05/31-13:11:28
hgodscr, line 615: calling SQLColAttribute got sqlstate HY091
It seems it is not critical as DG4ODBC continues, but a more detailed analysis would require an ODBC trace.
When looking at the table description it seems the column names are all in lower letters, for example: solar. So commonly Dg4ODBC needs to quote the names

and according to the trace the FoxPro ODBC driver doesn't like these quotes and reports a syntax error.
So this explains at least why select codcen from centros@fox1 will fail. In general the Oracle database is case insensitive and translates all object names to upper case and the select it will pass to the foreign database would be similar to:
select CODCEN from CENTROS => which will fail as FoxPro is case sensitive. So the error message ORA-00904 (missing column name) is correct and the statement you need to use is:
    select "codcen" from centros@fox1;
But this might lead again to the Syntax error you got earlier => You need to check which sign (single quote, back tick, double quote) Foxpro uses to quote object names and then set the gateway parameter HS_FDS_QUOTE_IDENTIFIER accordingly.
To check which character can be used to quote column/table names you might use the Microsoft ODBc test utility which was distributed in the old MDAC 2.8:

  • PDF PRINTING using Apache FOP and Oracle Containers for J2EE

    Hi,
I am having major confusion about the pdf printing in Oracle XE and Apex 3.1.2.00.02
It clearly states that this is an available option on the Oracle website.
According to Apex there are two options for printing report regions.
    Standard - which is free
Advanced - which uses BI and requires a licence
Standard requires me to have Apache FOP (which is provided by Oracle in the Apex release) and Oracle Containers for J2EE (OC4J)
Where my understanding of all this falls down is the part where I am downloading the Oracle Containers for J2EE and the license agreement states this cannot be used in a production system (only as a protptype). Can anyone clarify this? This is surely a required componenet and for the standard report printing which is supposed to be free.
My problem is that I need to have a database system on a laptop that will go off site for a number of weeks. We need report printing options.
Can anyone help with this. im desperate.
    Kind regards
    colin mclay

no not yet with Application Server.
I have tried to compare the settings to another installation with a separeted oc4j as described in the howto. But at the moment i found no mistakes.
If i call the url adresse like:
    http://localhost:18101/fop/apex_fop.jsp
    i get:
    500 Internal Server Error
    Servlet error: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: fop.apex__fop
I installed it another time with these settings:
Web Anwendung= .../fop.war (selected war file from apex install directory)
    Anwendungsname= fop
    URL zuordnen= /fop
I would like to know if its possible to use the fop.war out of apex install directory with the Application server? In the standalone version (as described in howto) it works. But if you install it there you don't need to define an URL.
Is the URL /fop correct or what do i have to insert there?

  • Can I use Oracle XE for commercial purpose?

Hi can anyone please tell me if I can use Oracle XE for my company's database?

    Hi,<br>
    <br>
It seems yes, Oracle Database 10g Express Edition (Free to develop, deploy, and distribute)<br>
    <br>
    Nicolas.

  • Is Standard Edition free for development purpose

    Hello,
I am using Oracle 10g express edition on a 32-bit Redhat Enterprise Linux 4. My test database have come upto 2gb and after that the database stopped working. I have been told to change to 64-bit OS through forums because of the 2gb file size limitation for 32-bit OS. When I checked the Oracle downoad site, there is no 32-bit Oracle express edition 10g. There is a 64-bit Oracle standard edition. Is Oracle 10g Standard Edition free for development purposes? What about Oracle 11g Standard edition?

All Oracle software, though, is available for download from OTN with a license that allows you to prototype your application. Once the application is beyond the prototype phase, you'd need to purchase an appropriate license for your development environment, but you may just be looking at prototyping...
As well, note that the database size and RAM restrictions in the express edition would not be expected to change if Oracle ever released a 64-bit version. The whole point of those restrictions is to ensure that the free express edition doesn't cannibalize sales of the standard edition databases.

  • SAS vs Oracle comparison for statistical modeling

    Hi,
I am working on a project that require a lot of statistical analysis. as we are in a preliminary phase of determining which way to go, someone recommended to use SAS.
would you be able to share your experience/comments related to SAS vs Oracle comparison when it comes down to using statistical models within each of these applications. and is there a list of all statistical models that Oracle offers (it could be handy to compare it with our requirements.)
Plus, would also like to know if there is a way to test these models... just like APEX is offered free for testing purposes @ apex.oracle.com
    Thanks in advance

You don't go into much detail regarding what types of statistical technques that you might want to use. First, Oracle both partners with SAS and competes and SAS. In terms of Oracle technology for statistics and models, we ship about 50 basic statistical technques with EVERY Oracle Database for free. Those stats include below. See SQL Reference Guide for details:
    Descriptive Statistics
DBMS_STAT_FUNCS: summarizes numerical columns of a table and returns count, min, max, range, mean, median, stats_mode, variance, standard deviation, quantile values, +/- n sigma values, top/bottom 5 values
    Correlations
Pearson’s correlation coefficients, Spearman's and Kendall's (both nonparametric).
    Cross Tabs
Enhanced with % statistics: chi squared, phi coefficient, Cramer's V, contingency coefficient, Cohen's kappa
    Hypothesis Testing
Student t-test , F-test, Binomial test, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test, Chi-square, Mann Whitney test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, One-way ANOVA
    Distribution Fitting
    Ranking functions
    rank, dense_rank, cume_dist, percent_rank, ntile
Window Aggregate functions (moving & cumulative)
Avg, sum, min, max, count, variance, stddev, first_value, last_value
    LAG/LEAD functions
    Direct inter-row reference using offsets
    Reporting Aggregate functions
Sum, avg, min, max, variance, stddev, count, ratio_to_report
    Statistical Aggregates
    Correlation, linear regression family, covariance
    Linear regression
Fitting of an ordinary-least-squares regression line to a set of number pairs.
Frequently combined with the COVAR_POP, COVAR_SAMP, and CORR functions
Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test, Anderson-Darling Test, Chi-Squared Test, Normal, Uniform, Weibull, Exponential
Additionally, Oracle has a Database Option called Oracle Advanced Analytics which delivers 12+ hi-performance, data mining algorithms (e.g. clustering, decision trees, regression, association rules, anomaly detection, text mining, etc.) as native SQL functions that can be called from SQL, the R language or the Oracle Data Miner workflow GUI (ships with SQL Developer). There is a LOT more information on the OAA Option here http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/options/advanced-analytics/index.html?ssSourceSiteId=ocomen.
    Hope this helps. cb

  • Can't install Personal Oracle 8i for NT

So that we may better diagnose DOWNLOAD problems, please provide the following information.
    - Server name NONE
    - Filename NT817 Personal.zip
    - Date/Time 2/7/2002
    - Browser + Version IE 5.5
    - O/S + Version NT 4.0
    - Error Msg NONE
I downloaded and unzipped the above named file. When I try to run setup.exe, the cursor blinks to an hour glass for a milisecond and then nothing. Some advice I've had from others has been to:
    1. Check for a folder called c:\ProgramFiles\oracle\inventory\locks and make sure there
is nothing in there. Folder does not exist.
    2. Make sure I have sufficient free space on drive c: to allow for the log files. I have approx 500mb free space.
Any assistance would be most appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • Is it FREE for commercial use?

    Dear all,
Has been using Skype for the past few years, and mostly for my personal usage.
Just to clarify something about Skype Licensing, is it FREE for commercial use? For example, I myself and my current/ex colleagues are using Skype for working related purposes, be it just texting or calls or video calls. Do we need to purchase licenses/subscription for commercial use? For your reference, we're from Malaysia.
Appreciate if anyone there care to explain on this matter.
    Regards,
    Edmund

You are not permitted to u...'
YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO HAVE YOUR LEGAL TEAM LOOK AT THAT LICENSE DOC.

  • Oracle free version

Does there exist any free light versions of Oracle Database? I am trying to learn Oracle and have a few books, but without the tool itself in front of you it is not that easy, I think hands on experience using it would be much easier. Theer is MSDE for SQL Server just wondered if there was similar for Oracle

Take a moment to actually read the license agreement when you download. XE is the usual "personal" version and is probably pretty good from an apps view, but if you want to study from a DBA view, I'd get the full enterprise edition. I have a full virtual oracle lab running on my WinXP laptop, it is fully legal, and it cost me nothing.
Download and install VMplayer from VMware (free)
Download Oracle Linux from Oracle. (free. You only pay if you want support)
    Create a virtual linux server
Download Oracle Enterprise Edition (free for personal study) and install it on the virtual Linux server.
This setup will give you a much more realistic environment in which to hone your DBA skills.
