Is Organizer lousy vs. iPhoto or is just my ignorance?

WIth all the good stuff packed into organizer as a data mangement tool for photo and film media files, I am astonished about the lack of 2 minor features, that would have given the application an A+1 from me.
First I am sooooooo missing the GPS tags like in iPhoto, where you get the location automatically tagged and can see the location of any tagged picture on Google map or earth ... automatically!
Second, why is the face recognition not linked to the address book (Contact) as it is with iPhoto?
Other than that, Organizer is great as to what it is supposed to do, Data Management! As it leaves the original files where they are and you do not end up having your photos scattered all over your disk. The file management and search abilities are great, the fact that you edit and save your edits under the same controls your data organiser does is also nice.
So with all this effort by Adobe PSE10, can it be true they left out on such 2 minor features of such great deal? I hope I am just the ignorant person here who does not yet know how to use this application as I am new to it.
Please Adobe Fans and photo freaks ... tell me Organiser has it, I just failed to dig it.
I mean I've seen it on Bridge with CS6, so they know how to ... but why did they not do?

New to me, thanks for the info :-)
But to keep to the discussion, just now I noticed under uny photo properities in Organizer, when you veiw the detailed info you get to see the GPS tag and all its info.
Why cant we use it through Organiser, but we could if we paid the extra Buck in Bridge?!

  • Will iphoto automatically import just the new pics?

    I just bought a imac g5. i'm upgrading from a g3 and os9.2. i'm new to os10 and iphoto.
previously i imported pictures from my camera. i've taken some more pics since and want to import them. however, i never deleted the older pics from the camera. when i plug in the camera the import screen indicates that it'll import 300+ pics.
will iphoto automatically import just the new pics? if not, what should i do?

    Back again...
--First thing to know and remember is this...Do not drag any images, folder of images into the iPhoto Library in the Finder. Images have to be imported into iPhoto within the application. Do not scan images and save them into the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. Save them to another location such as the Pictures folder or even the desktop. You can then import them into iPhoto.
--You have a folder of images on your hard drive and want to import them into iPhoto. Drag the folder of images into an open iPhoto Library window and the folder of photos will be copied into the library, resulting in a new roll with the name of the folder. You now have two copies of those photos, the ones in iPhoto's database and the ones on your desktop. You can keep the ones on your desktop that you just imported as backup or you can delete that folder.
-- you scan a picture/pictures and save it in a folder. You cannot scan directly into iPhoto or the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder.
You want all your photos in iPhoto so you import them into iPhoto.
Now you have two copies of that picture/pictures, so you can delete the originals that were in the scanned folder and keep the one/ones that were imported into iPhoto.
-- You download pictures from your camera into iPhoto.
There is now one copy of each of the pictures.
You want to change something about a picture you imported, such as
cropping it or changing the size, or changing the orientation.
Once you do that to a picture, you now have two copies of the picture
in iPhoto, the original and the edited one. The edited one will be in the library organize view. The original is packed away in an Original folder in your iPhoto Library folder under the date of the roll. You can always revert to the original by control clicking on the photo and choose "revert to orginal" You will not have this choice if you used iPhoto Diet to get rid of the Originals.
(a quick note on cropping within iPhoto...when you are in edit mode, you automatically will be in the crop mode with cross hairs to highlight the crop area. To finish cropping you must click the crop button and then go back to library view and your cropped picture will be there.
3.You want to use Photoshop or another graphic program to edit a picture in your iPhoto library.
You can open up prefs for iPhoto and choose "when double clicking on
photo ..do" choose "other" and select Photoshop. Now you can edit all
pictures in your iPhoto library in PhotoShop by double clicking. If you save the photo with the same name and as a flattened file it will be saved right into iPhoto and you will see the changes. If you don't want to save it into iPhoto then do a "save as" and save to the desktop. You will then have the original photo still in iPhoto and your new edited photo on the desktop.
Or, with iPhoto open, you can drag a picture from the library window
to your desktop (you see a + sign on the pic you are dragging). You now
have two of the same picture, one in the iPhoto library and one on your desktop. You can open up the one on your desktop in any graphic program and work on it. The one in iPhoto stays the same. You can also share/export the picture/pictures to your desktop or folder to work on them or do batch processing, etc. You will still have the originals in your iPhoto Library.
Or, you can open up the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/folders and option drag any
picture out of the folder to your desktop. Notice that you will see a plus sign while dragging the photo. This is copying the file to your desktop
I would advise anyone not to do this as they might forget to use the option key and drag the photo out. Next time you open iPhoto the photo will be missing.

When you export the videos out of iPhoto be sure to select Kind = Original.  Otherwise you'll just get an image file of the first frame of the video.

Using OSX10.8.2 and iPhoto 11.  Just installed Photoshop CS6 and want to open

in iPhoto 11.  Nothing happens when I click on ‘edit‘ it is blank.
And now it will not work using Photoshop CS6 either.
From Help Center I have gone to iPhoto/Preferences/ Advanced and chosen Photoshop CS6  to Edit Photos but then cannot find an 'Open' to click? Perhaps this is the problem?
When I select a photo in iPhoto and click the Edit button - nothing happens.

This may be of help to you:
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • Is there a way to organize pictures in Iphoto by dragging?  not organizing by date....

is there a way to organize photos in Iphoto by dragging directly to the top of page?  not organizing by date.....

Create an album and place into it any pictures you like. You can even place every single picture in your iPhoto library into it. The pictures can then be organized in any arbitrary way you wish within that album.

So I am wondering why it says I have to buy the upgrade for a newer computer? Any ideas? I want to sync my photos with all my devices (Macbook, iPad, iPhone) through the cloud.

Not if you purchased it from the App Store. But if it's part of the iLife boxed set, then you have to repurchase. But you can purchase on the App Store which then lets you install it on as many computers as you own.

I now can't open iPhoto! have just updated it, downloaded everything they asked for and still can't open it!

To be able to help, we will need more details.
What is your current iPhoto version, Anthony?  And your MacOS X version? And what was the iPhoto version you upgraded from?
What happens, when you try to open your iPhoto library?
have just updated it, downloaded everything they asked for and still can't open it!
You say, you downloaded everything - did you download the Library upgrader? And did you install and run it? Was there any error message?
If your iPhoto library has been upgraded ny the upgrader, you should be able to upgrade it to your current iPhoto version by double clicking it to launch iPhoto on it. Have you tried that?  What happens when you try?
One problem to check for - iPhoto may be unable to open your iPhoto library, if it is not on a dsk formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled). Check the formatting of the drive with your iPhoto library.

My iPhoto App has just vanished along with 23,000 photos how can I recover i Photo?

If the iPhoto app is still in the applications folder it's possible the library just needs to be rebuilt. Use Apple's instructions in:

If iPhoto is no longer in the Applicaitons folder let us know.

I believe it is version 11 of iphoto as i tried to update but it says it has the latest update and Mac is 2 weeks old from new.
    OS is Lion.
I have just tried to look everywhere on the Mac to see where the photos might be.
There are no error messages showing on screen and it was fine before my wife did what she did. Even though we have back -ups of 95% of the pictures. I would like to know what happened so that it won't happen again.

I had a neighbor one time who was annoyed that "that darn bolt on the bottom of my engine" kept scraping on the curb when he'd pull in or out of his driveway, so he ground it down till it was flat with the oil pan. It wasn't till about a year later when he took the car in to have the oil changed that he realized the error of his ways. Cost him $500 to have the pan pulled and replaced.

  • What is the best way to organize photos? iPhoto or Aperture?

I am a mom taking tons of photos of my young children. On my old PC I used to organize everything within "My Pictures" by Month & Year (May 2008). I am a very organized, linear person and don't like to change the way I do things midstream so I am having a hard time figuring out how to organize our family photos now that I have switched to a Mac with iPhoto and Aperture. In the future I hope to learn about Aperture's professional tools (which as a mom & not a professional photographer I currently do not use). I would love to take photography classes at a local community college someday...
    My questions are as follows:
    1) What is the better way for ME to store our photos? Should I be uploading to iPhoto or Aperture? I basically want all of my "master photo images" in the same location in an organized fashion. I am hoping to do this without clogging up my computer. At this point I am thinking at the end of each year I will burn the year's photos to a disk for save keeping. But until then...
    2) Is the "library" the over-arching place where all photos are stored? In general, I am having a hard time following the hierarchy of where my photos are being stored, how to organize them and how to completely delete bad photos.
    3) Can I do everything I can do in iPhoto in Aperture? Obviously I know I can do more but is it as easy to edit/fix up photos?
I have listened to/watched several tutorials on both programs and have read through many other folks' questions/answers but I am still not sure of what to do.
I really appreciate any help/advice anyone is willing to give!
    Thanks!

I'm not a professional either, just a grandma with a love of digital photography who takes lots of photos. We used to live in a motorhome full time, so we had lots of opportunities to take many photos.
I personally like Aperture better than iPhoto because I like to use some of the NIK software/plugins where I can do the adjusting right in Aperture and don't always have to send the photos to PhotoShop. Also you have a bit more flexibility as to file set ups with Aperture. In iPhoto you don't have as many nesting capabilities. iPhoto is great, but pretty basic.
I had my photos set up as files on the PC, long before I got my first Mac. So I set them up the same way. I'll try to explain
    In Finder:
Pictures (in side bar on left in Finder)
    Folder - My Photos
    2nd Folder - by year
In the year folder I have a folder by date ie: 20000722 (year, month, date) and the photos from that date in there.
Once I got to using Aperture, I have my years set up as "projects" and the dates set up as "Albums". When importing the whole set of photos into Aperture, it was easy. I highlighted the "library", then did a right mouse click and selected "import folders as projects". That imported the photos into Aperture the same way I have them in finder.
Once everything is in Aperture, and you have new photos to add, I make an album under the corresponding year and import.
I do all my photos as referenced and don't duplicate them again, as I have them backed up in a couple of other places.
IMHO you can't back up enough! Don't wait and do it only once a year! Hard drives have a way of crashing and you'll loose all your photos. Use DVD's, thumb drives, ext. hard drives or what ever works for you. But always back up.
When I take my photos off of the memory card, I immediately send a copy to the back up external HD. Once the photos are adjusted etc. I make sure I have a copy elsewhere too. Only then do I erase them off of the memory card. Might be a bit redundant, but I'm not about to loose any of my photos. When we lived in the motorhome we were always aware of the possibility of theft or fire. So I got in the habit of taking some time to reduce the size of the photos and keep them on a thumb drive that I kept out of the RV. If anyone broke in or we had a fire, I'd still have the photos. Maybe not the originals or the bigger size, but we wouldn't loose them either.
If you want more info on non professional filing, send me a PM and I can send you a photo of my file hierarchy . (suemach (at) mac (dot) com)

  • How do i organize photos in iPhoto?

I have many duplicate photos in iphoto, and cannot figure how to organize the photos by folder.  I have created a few, and added photos, but they appear to be "copies" rather than a move....I haven't ever done this on a MAC, just a PC...so perhaps I'm missing something....any suggestions would be very appreciated!
Additionally, I seem to be a bit confused regarding the "camera roll", " library" and "photo stream".  My iphone is nearing full memory (planning to upgrade to 32 or 64 G), and not sure is I delete my photos, if they will be removed from my MAC data.
    Thanks again

With iPhoto folders contain only albums or other folders - folders can not contain photos
Organization is done with albums and smart albums. Adding key words to photos lets you effectively use smart albums
I use the old standard Who, What, When, Where & Why scheme
    Faces does who
Places (combined with my GPS camera) does where
    The camera also does when
    Why & what get keywords
Also note that placing a photo in an album or smart album does not copy it - it just creates database entries ( pointers to the photos in the library) so it does not take additional space
