  • HT4623 Latest Apple software available for the original iPad?

Will the original iPad ever be compatible for updates beyond 5.1.1?

I was thinking that may be the case, I guess the hardware limits what the newer software versions are capable of with regard to application upgrades. It's too bad newer game and other apps don't take this into account for the original iPad. Thanks for your reply....

  • Multi finger gestures for the original iPad in

Are multifinger gestures like pinch to home screen available for the original iPad under ios5?  They don't seem to be working after I updated to ios5 and I don't see any way to enable them under settings.

These features are currently only available on the iPad 2 despite no such advertisement otherwise!

  • Where can I buy an ipad2 case with the same design as the case for the original ipad?

I thought the case for the original ipad was great, but it doesn't quite fit the ipad2.  Is there somewhere I can find a case with that same design, but fitted for the ipad2?

Is there an external webcam made for the original iPad?

There was an iClops project for awhile, but the folks abandoned the idea, I heard for possible legal reasons.
There is an app, Camera for iPad, that lets you use the iPhone's better resolution camera to take photos for other iOS devices. But it does not work with any video apps. I am not sure why I would take photos with an iPhone for the iPad, unless it was for later viwing on the larger display.

  • HT4623 Is iOS 7.0.2 available for my original IPad with iOS 5.1.1 ?

Is the new iOS 7.0.2 available for update on the original IPad using iOS 5.1.1?

The latest version for a 1st generation iPad is iOS 5.1.1, so you can't update to iOS 7.0.2. If you want the latest version, you need a new iPad

  • Is there any way to extend the length of the Apple component AV cable for the original iPad?

I have an original iPad, but the component video cable is too short to really do any good. Can it somehow be extended. It would really be useful if there was an adapter for the 30-pin connector that goes into the iPad itself so that one wire could extend the AV cable another 10-15 feet. I know of no such adapter. Is there one out there?
My goal is to stream YouTube videos from my iPad to my Samsung HDTV. I guess I could buy an Apple TV and do it wirelessly through my Airport Expresses.
Anyway, I would appreciate some advice from anybody who has tried to accomplish the same or similar things.

Have you been able to get this cable to work on your iPad? I just went out and bought this cable so I could stream YouTube, Netflix and my other video on my iPad and the component cable wasn't working. I went back to my Apple store and replaced it with the composite video cable and everything works fine. I do not think that the component cable works with the original iPad because its output is not HD. Anyhow, you should be able to buy extender type cables at any Radio Shack, or any audio/video retailer. Look in the cables section. keep in mind you'll need both Audio cable and component video cable extended cables to increase the distance you are using these at. Keep in mind, also, that the iPad is basically useless while playing video. You can't multitask while watching the video because, depending on what apps you have that do video mirroring, you'll end up leaving the video and whatever app you're working in will show up on your TV screen. When I watch video I just leave my iPad close by the TV and walk up to it to play or pause video. Can't use it for anything else while the movie is playing, anyway. ;)

  • Where can I buy a cover for the original iPad?

I own an iPad original, not the iPad2... I need a cover and can't seem to figure out where to find one.  Everything in the Apple Store is for iPad2.  Suggestions?

    Hi there,
Im not sure what you mean by cover, but if you mean like the Apple 'Smart Cover' there is no such item for iPad 1.
However, there are an array of cases on the market. You can get the official Apple one by clicking the link below, or click on the second link for a list of other cases.

  • Is 5.1.1 really the latest iOS version for the original iPad?

I am trying to download the DirectTV app that comes up in the app store to my ipad and get message that iOS version 6.1 is required.  In settings, the iPad is on version 5.1.1 and says the software is up to date.  Is 5.1.1 really the latest OS for my iPad, meaning I cannot use the DirectTV online service?

    So true.
Apple controls the iTunes store and decides what apps get in. They could force app developers to have their apps work with older iOS systems, but instead, it's in apples best interest to force you to go buy a new tablet every three years. Apple doesn't care that iPad1 owners are the ones that made the tablet successful for apple. If they cared about their customers, if they wanted brand loyalty, apple would offer to buy back ipad1s for a decent amount that could be put toward a newer iPad. Apple lost my business. If 'technology dictates' that I have to get a new tablet every three years, I'm gonna go with a less expensive other brand.

  • How do I update the os for the original ipad,  I have a 3.3ish os now.

How do I update the os on my ipad?

Plug it into your syncing computer, open iTunes, click on the name of your device and on the Summary tab (I believe it is) you'll see the option to download and update your device.
Personally, I'd recommend syncing and backing up your device, THEN update. just in case something goes wrong you have  good recent backup.

  • Is ios 5.1.1 the latest update for my original ipad

Many of the latest apps require ios 6 or newer but everytime I check to see if the later versions are available all I get is my ipad is up to date version ios 5.1.1.
Is this it for the original ipad are we being forced to get newer gadgets in order for new apps to work?

Yes, 5.1.1 is the last version for the iPad 1.

  • Will the original iPad no longer receive updates when iOS 7 comes out?

I have been told my original iPad will no longer receive software updates after iOS 7 comes out. Furthermore, I was told I would no longer be able to purchase apps and that the apps I have would no longer receive updates making my iPad totally useless. Is all of this correct?

I imagine that it would be up to the software developers to make sure that their apps will still work with iOS 5.1.1 which is the highest upgrade for the original iPad. So as long as apps are available for iOS 5 you will still be able to purchase them.
If your iPad functions today with the apps that you already have on it, it will still work when iOS 7 is released. A new software upgrade has no bearing on whether your iPad will still be functional. It just will not be able to download new apps that require iOS 6 or iOS 7.

  • What is the "correct"  name for the new iPad?  Is it also called the 3rd Generation?

I have the latest iPad, purchased Mar '12.  But when I read Apple News it is referred to as the "new ipad" & somtimed the 3rd Generation.  What is the "correct name & will "SIRI" be available with this Fall latest update?  Thanks!!!

Yes, it is somewhat confusing isn't it. Almost like, the iPad is having an identity crisis. I believe the official Apple line would be that it is the "New iPad" but I see it referred to the 3rd generation just as frequently as the new iPad.
Siri will be available for the "new iPad/3rd Gen when iOS 6 is released this fall.

  • Cases for the new ipad(3-generation)?

Any cases available for the new ipad(3-generation)?

Zagg has said they have new ones, as to other manufacturers. Whether or not you can get them exactly now or in a couple of weeks varies.
Some iPad 2 cases will work. the new ipad is only .03 thicker than the old one. So if you have any portfolio cases they will probably fit, it just may be a bit of a tight fit. The other keys and buttons are said to be in the same place.
the ones that have the least flexibility are snap on cases.

  • HT4623 I have the original ipad and it does not show ios 6 available for download.

I have been looking all over and cannot find where they have said that.  Strange that they wouldnt include it.
