Is Pages spell-checker prone to error?

I relied on the built-in spell-checker of Pages to check several large documents.
It was shortly pointed out to me that my report was full of typographic mistakes.
(Yes, I should never have released the report without re-reading it for errors......)
After reading some about the "dictionary" that a spell-checker relies on and how the user
may inadvertently alter it by approving mistaken spelling or failing to correct typos, I suspected
I had done so, and replaced the "dictionary" for Pages.
Two questions:
Have others had this experience, of finding the Pages spell-checker not working well?
How have you adjusted to avoid such going forward?
(My reponses may not be sufficient: be more careful, i..e., correct all mistakes when spell-checker is on;
look for software to catch my mistakes that improves or checks on Pages.

  • Pages spell check and Mac dictionary

    I find it annoying that Pages' spell-check is not synchronized with Mac Dictionary/Thesaurus. There are words I type that are shown as misspelled, but exist in the Dictionary program. Why not sync the two? It's annoying how many legitimate words Pages thinks are misspelled.

    Welcome to Apple discussions.
    I completely agree. OS X's dictionary and thesaurus are excellent, and it would be nice to have them integrated into Pages spell-check and learned words functions.
    Please leave feedback for the Pages team.

  • Can pages spell check in Spanish?

    My daughter is doing a paper for her Spanish class, and would like to spell check the document, Does Pages have the capability to spell check in languages other than English?
    Thanks for any and all helpful info.

    Aha, so that's the reason you're going after me.  You've decided that what I posted today has zero to do with a poster who posted years ago, so I need to have my hand slapped.
    Can I point out that the title of this thread is "can pages spell check in Spanish?"  The title didn't limit the question to one particular version.
    Do you not realize that for everyone who writes a post about their problem there are many other people who simply search the archives to get their problem addressed? Instead of posting a brand new question they search the archives and solve their own problems without ever being detected.  The lurkers as they are often called.
    Take me for example, I was searching this very issue today, came across this very post, and the solution you offered back in January of 2012 didn't work for me. So, I poked around in Pages until I found the current solution to my current version of Pages. And, I added it to the discussion for the sake of others like me who might find the January 2012 solution not workable for them either. So, they wouldn't have to poke around and work it out for themselves.
    I hope this is not how you treat everyone who contributes to the knowledge base.  Try to be a little patient if you will with the ones of us who don't hang around here day in and day out. While we may not know your rules for the sandbox, we're just trying to be helpful. No need to come after us with your guns blazing.

  • How can I adjust my Pages spell checker for English as opposed to American spelling?

    How can I adjust my Pages spell checker for English as opposed to American English?

    Use the Inspector palette > T tab > Tabs. You can write the fraction number. Clicking on the arrow button has 1 cm increments which isn'r helpful for us using centimetres instead of inches.

  • Pages Spell Check

    When is Pages spell check going to be updated?
    It's better on iPhone...

    You can offer Apple feedback here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ but you may want to be a little more specific in how you feel it is not adequate on the iPad.

  • How do I make pages spell check my footnotes?

    I am using a trial version of iWork pages 09 (have bought the software), but it doesn't seem to spell check the text in the footnotes, either as I type (so it underlines errors in red) or when I select the text and choose spell check from the right click menu. Please help, it's REALLY annoying!

    Current Firefox versions hide Check Spelling in the right-click context menu of a text area if the web page disables the spelling check via a spellcheck="false" attribute of this element.
    You can right-click in the text editor area and use "Inspect Element" to see if this text area has a spellcheck="false" attribute.
    Removing this spellcheck="false" attribute by selecting it via a double-click and using the Delete or Backspace key should make the Check Spelling item in the right-click context menu reappear.

  • Pages Spell Check all Wonky?

    Does any one know how to fix this: I am spelling normal words in pages (i.e. "our" "at" "strong") and they are getting red-lined for spelling. When I right-click there are "no guesses" or very weird words coming up! I checked the language settings on my laptop and it is set to English. When I right-click the word and ask it to "look-up in dicitionary" it easily finds the definition!
    Why isn't spell check using the selected dictionary? This is extremely annoying.
    Thanks.

    And now it is changing normal words to incoherant ones... I feel like my language has been changed. where are the preferences for this?
    Thanks,
    T

  • Pages spell check "all caps"

    Is there a way to prevent the spell checker from skipping over WORDS IN ALL CAPS?  Or, should I say WORDX IN ALL CAPS?  Using latest version of OSX and pages.

  • Is it possible for pages spell check to not flag words that are found on wikipedia?

    I'm using Pages 5.2.2 in OSX 10.9.5 and type lots of medical and science words into pages. These words are not found in the default dictionary and are thus flagged as misspelled words (red underline). They are found on wikipedia and I have enabled wikipedia in the dictionary app. For instance, the word "epiglottitis" is flagged. When I right click on it and select "Look up 'epiglottitis'", the dictionary popup opens and the word is found.
    Is there a way to adjust the spell check settings so that it does not flag words that it can find on Wikipedia? If this could be done in iOS as well, it would be fantastic. Thanks!

    Thanks! I also discovered that I can add dictionaries for the spellchecker in "Library > Spelling" and then go to "System Preferences > Keyboard > Text > Spelling > Set up..." and select them there, so that may be a faster way to add words to the spellchecker.

  • Pages Spell checking

    I was not sure about it, but I saw that sometimes a sentence would have a marked phrase, and Proofread would stop at it, and the only context option is "Never Hyphenate". There was not hyphen involved.
    So I did a test. I typed the a few sentences in, all of which had grammar problems in the competing wordprocessor.
    None caught in Pages:
    I ran good in the race.
    There house was big.
    That ship was their.
    This is unfortunate if Apple does not have decent grammar/spell checking.

    Question asked and responded many times.
    The spell checker behavior is ruled by the language setting applying to the pieces of text.
    Given what you describe, I assumes that some pieces of text are set as "use oneLanguage" and others ar set to "none".
    You may check that in the Text Inspector, open the tab entitled "More" and look the setting of the menu item entitled "Language".
    If you grabbed some pieces of text from .txt files or from files coming from windowLand, it's not surprising if they don't have a language defined.

  • How to I edit Mail and Pages spell check

    Would like to edit the file of words that the spell check uses for Mail and Pages.  I have erroneously had it "learn" the wrong spellings and would like to eliminate the erroneously spellings

    My user dictionary file is located in my
    homefolder\library\spelling\en
    I have, in the long past, edited that file using TextEdit.

  • Pages Spell Checking/ Profreading Problem

    Hi,
    I am working with several different documents,I am combining sections from various sources to create one new document. When I copy and paste information from one document to another the spell checking/proofreading function does not work on the new section pasted in. It works for the rest of the document, just not the new part.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

  • Cookies. Page that checks cookies gives error if there are no cookies.

    Hi All,
    I got the code that checks for cookie names :
    Cookie[] cookies = request.getCookies();
    out.println("there are " + cookies.length + " cookies<br>");
    for(int i = 0; i < cookies.length; i++)
         out.println("<li>" + cookies.getName() + ": " + cookies[i].getValue());
         if (cookies[0].getName().equals("user")) {
              String someString = cookies[0].getName();
              out.println("<p><p>" + someString);
    But when there are no cookies, this page gives an error. So first there
    should be some code that checks if there are cookies and if so then
    check to see what cookies there are.
    But how would I do this?
    It allready gives an error at :
    Cookie[] cookies = request.getCookies();
    Thanks for any help!!

    Cookie[] cookies = request.getCookies();
    if (cookies != null) {
        out.println("there are " + cookies.length + " cookies<br>");
        for(int i = 0; i < cookies.length; i++)
         out.println("<li>" + cookies.getName() + ": " + cookies[i].getValue());
         if (cookies[0].getName().equals("user")) {
              String someString = cookies[0].getName();
              out.println("<p><p>" + someString);
    } else {
    out.println("there are no cookies ");
