Is Pantone's Huey Monitor Calibrator slowing Snow Leopard or interfering?

I installed a Huey Color corrector on my iMac and, although everything went OK for weeks, I am now experiencing a 6-8 seconds delay before the characters for my password appear in the sign-in field.
I brought my iMac to the Genius Bar at the Apple store and they diagnosed a problem with Huey software, and apparently it is dealt with on their site.
Has any of you experienced that problem?
Thanks,
Raphael

Hi-
I am not having that behavior you describe with my Cinema display (#1) and an Eizo (#2). The Display pane in System Preferences Opens two panels, one on each monitor and each display can be set to its calibrated profile, which will remain with it when the Tool Bar is moved from one to the other. This is in 10.6.2 on a Mac Pro with two video cards, one for each display.
My problem has been unwanted orange or magenta coloration of the entire Eizo screen after calibrating it with i1 or Eizo software, all of the latest, 10.6 compatible issues.
I hooked the Eizo up to my old 2.0 GHz G5 PowerMac with 10.5.8 and had the same coloration problem. The only commonality among the two was the display and the software, as I only ran the Eizo calibration (of the appropriate variety, for 10.5) and had the same orange coloration problem.
Today I found a newer, 10.6 compatible diagnostic test tool for my i1 Display2 calibration device and it passed that test. I then calibrated both displays with i! software and so far have seen the magenta cast on the Eizo in the Calibrated Mode.
So I still don't know entirely what is happening except that I cannot seem to calibrate my Eizo display, which I bought to match prints to the display after a long and painful siege trying to produce a useable b&w print using an Epson printer and the Cinema display.
We'll see what happens next.

  • Monitor Calibration under Snow Leopard 10.6.6

    Hello,
I´m using a EIZO CE 240 W hardware-calibrated monitor for Photoshop and a second one connected with it for the tools, which worked perfectly under Tiger, but doesn´t work properly under Snow Leopard. Does anybody know this problem? When I disconnect the second monitor it works, apparently Snow Leopard doesn´t work with two monitor profiles. The color is too yellow-greenish.
    Please help! Best wishes,
    Peter

Recently upgraded from OS X 10.5 to Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and am finding that both Quicktime Pro 7 and QT Player X save movies EXTREMELY slowly - like a factor of ten slower than before.  Can't find anything about this, but it can't be right - it's really unusable.
Are you "saving" or "exporting/sharing" the content? (I.e., what are the containers, audio and video compression formats, and dimensions of both your source and output files?)

  • Spyder3Pro monitor calibration in Snow Leopard

I've just tried to install the latest version of Colorvision's Spyder3Pro software for monitor calibration, and it appears to need Rosetta. Since I've decided not to install Rosetta (I can live without monitor calibration for a while), does anyone know if Colorvision are bringing out a native Intel build of software (32- or 64-bit) any time soon?

Are you kidding? Rosetta only takes up 3 MB (not GB) of disk space and has ZERO impact on performance. It's only utilized when you run legacy software, and only while that software is running, and any slowdown is experienced only by that application due to the Rosetta emulation.
Why would you not utilize a program if it uses Rosetta and give up something as important as screen calibration? That's crazy in my book. Is having maximum performance while you are calibrating your monitor something that is important? You won't even notice it.

  • Final Cut Pro 7 monitor gamma and Snow Leopard?

With Leopard and FCP6 I was told I needed to calibrate my monitor to 1.8 gamma. Does this still hold true for FCP7 running under Snow Leopard or can I now use a monitor calibrated to 2.2 gamma?
    Many thanks!

... and on top of that, I recently read that a Gamma setting of 2.6 is being touted as the one to aim for as far as video is concerned.
Sorry, but again - any source of that value being aimed for video ?
One note I found was regarding cinema projector - very specific target - not video...
In 2005, leveraging color science research, the movie studios’ Digital Cinema Initiative selected a gamma of 2.6 as providing the best perceptual quality for 12-bit cinema projection.

  • HOW to temporarily use Broadcast monitoring work on snow leopard OS X v10.6.8  for  FINAL CUT PRO X

thx, macmacmac give me prompt. He had an interesting trick for getting the OS X Lion 'only' plugin to work on Snow Leopard
To install the plugin on Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8 you have to temporarily change your system version number to Lion 10.7.2!
    1. Go to HD:/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist
    2. Copy the file to the Desktop
    3. Open the original with a text editor and change the string value of 'ProductVersion' and 'ProductUserVisibleVersion' to '10.7.2'.
    4. Save & Overwrite.
I suddenly thought  Apple said that Broadcast monitoring work on Lion OS X v10.7.3.I change system version number at once! Changing 10.6.8 snow leopard system version number to Lion 10.7.2!
ok,no problem. Restart final cut pro x,A/V output has appeared in FINAL CUT PRO X preferences and Window Menu
    Enjoy it.HAHA!:cheer:

    thanks for the tip fan!

10.6: Re-enable LCD font smoothing for some monitors
Mon, Aug 31 2009 at 7:30AM PDT • Submitted by astrosmash
There is a bug in Snow Leopard that disables LCD (sub-pixel) font smoothing on many third party LCD displays, including models from Dell, Samsung, LG, HP, EIZO, and Lenovo. Here are the details:
Snow Leopard introduces simplified Font Smoothing options under the Appearance pane in System Preferences. Prior to Snow Leopard, the available options were:
Automatic - Best for Main Display
    Standard - Best for CRT
    Light
Medium - Best for Flat Panel
    Strong
In Snow Leopard, you can only choose between Automatic and Standard CRT. Since few people use CRTs these days, most users now have only one option: Automatic. The problem with the Automatic option is that OS X incorrectly detects many third party LCD monitors as CRTs, and consequently, disables LCD font smoothing.
You can force OS X to use LCD font smoothing on all displays with this Terminal command:
defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 2
The number 2 here corresponds to Medium - Best for Flat Panel. You may also use 1 for light smoothing, and 3 for strong smoothing, as per the original OS X font smoothing options.

  • Best Browser For Old/Slowing Snow Leopard?

I have an iMac desktop from mid 2008 running Snow Leopard, software up to date, 2.66 Ghz Core 2 Duo, & 2GB RAM. I have Safari, Firefox, Opera, & Chrome. Safari used to have a lot of issues until the last 2 updates for it came and it works fine now, but is a total RAM hog and is pretty slow if I have more than 2 tabs. Firefox not so much, but is slow compared to Safari & Chrome. Chrome would be my choice as it handles everything very well, but since a few months ago Chrome would randomly disconnect from the internet after browsing a few pages and I would have to quit and then relaunch Chrome. This happens regardless of whether or not I have other applications that use internet connection running. Chrome never cuts out if I'm just on youtube, so I use Safari for non Flash pages & Chrome for youtube almost exclusively. Opera... feels like a dead horse at this point. I would like to know if there are any other fast, lightweight browsers that run well on Snow Leopard that may be comparable to Chrome, or if anyone has encountered my problems with Chrome and has a fix (I've tried deleting & using appcleaner and reinstalling as well).

Personally, I would ditch any Google software, including, Chrome as it is a total OS X resource hog.
    https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95319?hl=en
I have, also, stopped using the Google search engine regularly (due to Google's privacy policies or lack thereof) and I now use DuckDuckGo as my default search engine.
Also, your OS X 10.6 version of Safari is out of date and has not had any security updates for quite awhile.
Your best bet is to just stay using Moziila FireFox, and no other browser, as it gets regularly updated by the great developers of the Mozilla group.
The current, up-to-date version of FireFox is STILL fully compatible with OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Also, as previously mentioned, your year and model Mac can take up to 6 GBs of RAM.
This will speed up processes considerably and will help alleviate some of your slowdown issues.
If you live in the U.S. , Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
OWC (macsales.com) has the proper RAM module or kit needed to get your Mac to the 6 GB RAM total limit.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/6400DDR2S6GP/
RAM is user installable and is, relatively, easy to install be newbie and novice Mac users.

  • Degraded Monitor Performance Post Snow Leopard Install

    Hi.
I have noticed substantial degraded Monitor Performance since installing Snow Leopard. The Monitor is an NEC MultiSync 20WMGX2. The picture is "washed out" looking. Any ideas what the problem might be? The Monitor Settings are as followngs:
    Brightness 50.0%
    Contrast 43.0%
    Sharpness 50.0%
    Advanced DV Mode is "on"
DV Mode is set for Text
The Graphics Card is the standard Mac Mini Intel GMA950 with 64MB of shared system memory.
Thanks for any suggestions on how to get the performance back for this monitor.
    Mike

Are you aware that the default display gamma has been switched from 1.8 to the default value of 2.2? If you want to build a 1.8 profile, then you still can. Some interpret the change as degradation.

  • Fixed: Slow Snow Leopard. What was this file for?

    Hi,
I just bought a new iMac on Monday. It's supposed to be the newest and best technology... blah blah blah blah blah.
Anyhow, it worked great for a few days, and then last night it began slowing down to the point where nothing was functional. A simple reboot helped very little, and I became very frustrated.
I ended up finding some guys blog about Macs, and he deleted this file to fix his Snow Leopard problems:
    System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.audio.coreaudiod.plist
Having no other choice but to wait for an update from Apple, I deleted the same file. I rebooted my computer, and it was like magic. The computer is faster then ever, and very enjoyable to use. So, my question is: what is the world is that for for? It used like 1.40-1.80 GB of RAM...
    Thanks for the help!

    K T wrote:
Core audio is the software side of digital audio on your computer. That plist is the destructible file related to settings. If you get rid of it, the system builds a fresh one.
no, it doesn't. none of the items in /system/library/launchdaemons are automatically rebuilt on deletion. if you delete something from there it's gone for good. these are necessary system daemons and deleting them can make system inoperable or cripple it. I'm not quite sure what this one does. googling indicates that it is responsible for a number of audio functions like system sounds and keeping volume settings on restarts. I've seen a number of posts recommending deleting it as a possible workaround for some slowdown issues but I would not do that with this or any other system launch daemon. as is aid, this may cripple some system functions and the file will not be recreated by the system if you want it back. if you want to disable it as a troubleshooting step you can do it without deleting the file. run the following terminal command
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.audio.coreaudiod.plist
this will make the daemon inactive without deleting the file. and it will remain inactive even on restarts. if you want to activate it change unload to load in the above command.

  • Slow Snow Leopard - esp. Parallels or VMWare - 140-500gb VM Page File Size!

I know that the VM page file size is only the hypothetical maximum VM size that could be used, but immediately after startup on my recently installed (not upgraded) Snow Leopard my VM Size is 140gb. It is not running anything at that point, other than Vuze which starts up at login.
Before restart, when I was trying to install Windows XP under VMWare, it was over 500gb!
My MBP 2.4 unibody has been feeling sluggish generally with plenty of beachballs, grinding to a halt under VMWare or Parallels in particular, and I wonder if the VM Size is an indicator of some problem? Examples of Parallels and VMWare problems were that it would take hours to install Windows XP or Windows 7, and eventually just ground to a halt with the install almost finished.
I have used Disk Utility to check the disk and repair permissions, but maybe bigger guns are needed? I took a quick look at my Xbench results, and the hard drive results were about 40% of the baseline... I have a feeling the hard drive might be churning away on something, slowing everything else down.
For example, surely it shouldn't take a few seconds to actually show all the applications in the applications folder when you open the folder (when no other programs are running)...

Sorry, 2gb RAM. When I restarted, the VM Page File Size was 140gb, the free memory was over 1gb, and there were no page in/outs from memory.

  • Temperature Monitor software and Snow Leopard

On my Mac Pro Core Temperatures are not displayed with Snow Leopard as they are under Leopard. Do I have a problem or do others notice this?

    Berkley,
I'd try reinstalling whatever software you're running, I assume Temperature Monitor from Marcel Bresink. It's possible there's a SL update you didn't get yet. Also try Using his Hardware monitor in demo mode. I'm seeing my core temps clearly under Snow Leopard.
Also, sometimes quitting and restarting the monitor software helps. Several times if necessary. Temperature Monitor has some menu items that are helpful if readings don't display, like Rescan Sensor Configuration and Update All Readings Now. Try those.
    Hope that helps,
    Rob

  • TM backups slowing Snow Leopard to a crawl

Every time TM backs up it takes four or five minutes, during which time the system gets unusably slow - up to a minute to activate a different window or bring up the dock, for example. I can't believe it's meant to be like this.
I've had a look at the Troubleshooting and FAQs and searched the last years worth of posts, but nothing seems to quite address my problem. Please do point me in the direction of any solutions if there are any knocking about!
I got hold or TM Buddy (the last log is below). TM is using about 80g of a 120g partition on an external firewire HD, which doesn't seem to have any other problems; backups are about 700meg, which seems large - I'm mostly wordprocessing, browsing or emailing.
From the other posts, my current guess is that while TM does have a performace hit, it's not meant to last more than a few seconds. Is this right?
If so, it's either deep traversal, or because my Gmail IMAP account is fully synched and it's about 1200mgs. It certainly takes Mail a while to load up. I'm a bit loathe to start archiving the mail because for me the whole point of Gmail is being able to search all my mail... however is there a solution for that I"m not aware of?
Or shouldn't TM be hitting performance in the first place?
Either way, how do I stop this happening?
Thanks for your help in advance.

    Yes, that's rather long.
It does include my gmail and previous postings would indicate that might mean a lot of small files, which might be taking the time.
Since this was the first backup after disabling Spotlight, might the cleaning up time have included removing Spotlight info?
No. They're entirely separate. They do both use the same mds (MetaData Server) process, and usually don't get in each other's way, but now and then they conflict. That's mostly on an initial full or other large backup, though.
The external drive is a three month old Freecom, on a direct FW connection. I'm guessing this is 800 since it's newish.
That depends on the drive and shape of the connector. But either way, your backups are rather slow.
Certainly, it comfortably handles video files in Final Cut on a different partition so I don't think it's a HD issue as such.
That could be a problem. If you're busily doing video editing on the same drive, both processes are contending for the same port. And if that partition is being backed-up by Time Machine, all the data has to go from one partition +*through your Mac+* and back to the other one, via the same port. And it's rather scary; when the TM drive fails (they all do, sooner or later), you risk losing both copies.
Edit: My Gmail account has about 4500 messages, so not huge.
Yes, that's large, but not huge. Are most of them in a single mailbox? If so, that could be a minor problem. Try quitting Mail, running a backup (via +Back Up Now+ from the TM icon in your menubar, or right-clicking the TM icon in your Dock), waiting several minutes, then running another backup. If the second one is much faster, that may be the problem.

  • Time Machine Slow - Snow Leopard

I have been using time machine for almost a year with no problems, but today it started taking forever to back up. There is plenty of space on the external drive, but after about 5 minutes it has only backed up 21 KB out of 79GB!
I used disk utility on my external my mac drive and it said everything was okay.
Does anyone know why it could be doing this?

It does take a while over a network; there's a lot of "setup" that seems to be required.
You might try the things in #E4 of [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Snow leopard and pixma problems, why won't bonjour find printer?

I have been a fool, my printer was working fine its a pixma mp990 (its a 3 in 1 scanner), working wirelessly. Then I decide to upgrade to snow leopard. On my imac and macbook, Pixma couldn't be found, so reinstalled on macbook and now it will print. But not the imac. I have re-installed the printer, but all I get in the 'add printer' dialogue box is the Bonjour pixma scanner. No sign of the printer. I know its on the network cos the macbook can see it and windows xp can see it. I thought things like this only happened in windows, but I am really despairing with my mac, there are just so many problems.

Well, the printer works again, after about 4 hours of fiddling about. That just leaves me with a Time Machine error- it won't back up any more. Also I have an Aperture library that won't back up (some sort of error) and an idisc which refuses to sync (don't know why), oh and parallels 3 has been wiped off my computer since upgrading to snow leopard (thanks for that, Apple). And my Huey monitor calibrator doesn't work properly, and my imac mouse refuses to scroll as it should, despite cleaning. So much for getting a Mac because 'it just works'. When I check out my various problems on the interweb I can see dozens of similar problems going back over the months from a variety of people. Drobo is just a pain in the proverbial. Right, which problem shall I deal with first ....

  • Snow Leopard killed my vga displays!!

This is by far the most weird problem I have ever encountered after upgrading to a new OS.
I run a company where we have something like 15 different Macs. Mostly Intel, but different ages, Mac Pro, Macbook Pro, iMacs, Mac Mini etc.
A couple of days ago I wanted to upgrade one of the Mac Pros to Snow Leopard. It's an early 2008 3.1 with ATI hd 2600 graphics. I wanted to do a clean install, but instead of backing up everything from the system drive, I pulled it out and put in a new clean one. This way I could retrieve the data from the old drive when I need it through a USB docking station or something.
Installation went by fast and without any problems what so ever.
But first thing I noticed when the first bootup was completed was that the resolution of my monitors were suddenly completely wrong. I have two Samsung Syncmaster 2343nw monitors connected through vga, and they have always been detected and automatically been set to the correct resolution in the display preferences dialog by the old Leopard. I have around 9 of these monitors working as dual displays on Leopard machines, and a few working as extra external monitors for a couple of Macbook Pros running both Snow Leopard and Leopard. They are all connected via an dvi to vga converter and they always get detected correctly as "Syncmaster" in Display preferences.
But suddenly now, they just show up as "VGA Monitor" in Display preferences.
After fighting with this for a couple of hours trying all the suggested workarounds I could find, zapping PRAM deleting /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist changing the cables and so on, I finaly gave up. Fortunately I didn't overwrite the old Leopard installation so of cause I could just swap the drives back and everything should be dandy after booting back into the old Leopard install.
But **** no! Now the resolution was equally messed up in Leopard! And none of the two monitors were detected as "Syncmaster" in display pref. Now they only show up as "VGA Monitor" as they did in Snow. ***?? How can an OS mess with a monitors plug 'n' play capabilities?
I then tried the obvious which was to try and reset the monitors, remove power from them, Zap the PRAM again. I even tried a different graphics card (that didn't work in this machine) but what ever I did, the monitors where no longer detectable by the OS.
Next step was to take some identical monitors from a different machine. And yes, they where detected by Leopard on the problem machine. Since I couldn't believe that Snow had actually ruined the other two monitors I booted back into Snow hooping that it would now detect these other identical monitors. But no, same problem. Back to Leopard, and once again now suddenly these couldn't be detected by Leopard either.
I have since tried these monitors on all the other Macs I have in the company, and only one machine with an nVidia card is able to detect them correctly as Syncmaster. But none the less also this machine isn't able to see the monitors native resolution thus making it impossible to select the right setting for the monitor.
So now I have 4 monitors that's virtually unusable after being in contact
I have read a lot about people who who suddenly can't use their secondary monitor after upgrading to Snow Leopard and that Apple is aware of this, and that 10.6.4 should address this problem when we finally get some new graphic drivers. But I haven't heard about anybody who's monitor lost it's plug 'n' play capabilities after being in contact with Snow Leopard.
But maybe someone here has had any similar experience? Maybe somebody else has had luck with upgrading a dual vga monitor system to Snow Leopard? I would love to get some ideas on what happened since these monitors doesn't really work anymore on any computer.
    Thanks!

Hmm... I know that the screens native refresh rate is at 60 Hz and the resolution is 2048 x 1152. I'm unable to check it out now but I'm pretty sure I can't select 60Hz. They only have VGA connectors (the same as D-Sub I guess?) And the closest I can get to the right resolution is 1920x 1280 (or maybe it's 1200, not sure) which looks almost right, but then again not, and a whole lot more fuzzy than it used to be.
On some machines the displays are detected as "Display" and on others "VGA monitor" or "VGA display". It's supposed to detect as "Syncmaster". Nothing changes if I press "Detect". I've only tried on machines running 10.5.8, and one brand new iMac running 10.6.3 through a display port to vga converter.
But thanks for link to the toms article. I'll give it a read
