>i am a mac user getting tired of iphoto. thinkin about replacing with photoshop or aperture. what do you think? how is photoshop to stock pictures?
By all means, if your Mac hardware is strong enough give Aperture a trial. It absolutely rocks for the new killer-app category of DSLR image capture management. Lightroom is another choice, but IMO most appropriate only for folks with non-MacIntel hardware. Both are far superior to Photoshop for image capture management, especially for anyone who has not already gone through Photoshop's very heavy learning curve.
I find that Aperture indeed 100% replaces iPhoto; however some iPhoto-experienced folks do keep iPhoto partially involved in their Aperture workflow.
If you are not currently a Photoshop user I recommend the combination of Aperture for the all-important image capture management and RAW conversion, plus (inexpensive) Adobe Photoshop Elements v6 for those few times when heavier image editing, adding text, etc. is desired. For full professional graphics art work Adobe's very expensive Creative Suite series becomes appropriate, but your post did not seem to lead there.
Step one with Aperture is to have at least 3-4 GB RAM on a MacIntel box. After adequate RAM is on board do the Aperture trial, and I strongly recommend that every digital photog with adequate computer hardware first spend $33 and work through the tutorial CD
i Apple Pro Training Series: Aperture 2 (Apple Pro Training Series) by Ben Long, Richard Harrington, and Orlando Luna (Paperback - May 8, 2008), Amazon.com.
Note that the value is in the tutorial, not in using the book as a manual. The time spent learning modern digital image capture workflow via the tutorial is invaluable,
i nothing
like the old days of Cumulus, Portfolio and iView Media Pro.
IMO a cursory examination of Aperture usually turns out to be mostly a waste of time, or leads to bad workflow habits or folks simply do not get it. Carefully working the tutorial is by far the best way to learn this new killer app category.
Good luck!

  • How to export for both windows and mac users

I'm new to the video stuff, so i have a few questions. i am planning to post videos on my blog. I want to have them in a format that both windows and mac users can play. is this a possibility or will i have to export .wmv for windows and quicktime for mac? i realize that windows users can download quicktime, but i either want the video to be viewable in a format that can be read by all without having to download anything (might be too big a wish :o) ). if i can't do that, then i'd like to have 2 links - one for quicktime and one to the .wmv. in this case, how to i export a .wmv file? i don't see that option anywhere on the share menu? do i need to buy quicktime pro? that leads me to another questions - if i have imovie, do i need quicktime pro? so far i'm having a hard time figuring out what quicktime pro has that imovie doesn't....thanks in advance!

Posting to YouTube and providing a URL link might be the most universal method of playback although quality may be on the weak side.
if i can't do that, then i'd like to have 2 links - one for quicktime and one to the .wmv. in this case, how to i export a .wmv file?
WMV is a proprietary compression format. You will either have to purchase the authorized QT components from Flip4Mac or purchase a separate open source converter application like Visual Hub.
i don't see that option anywhere on the share menu?
Any you won't even if you purchase and install the QT component -- iMovie '08 only exports to QT compression formats.
do i need to buy quicktime pro?
It wouldn't help. Getting QT Pro only unlocks editing and conversion features. It does not add any additional codecs which don't already have installed.
if i have imovie, do i need quicktime pro? so far i'm having a hard time figuring out what quicktime pro has that imovie doesn't.
As indicated above, QT Pro allows you to convert to/from any compression formats for which you have working import/export QT components. This can already be be done using GarageBand and iMovie. GarageBand allows you to access any installed QT import/export component while iMovie '08 restricts you to Apple QT components. In addition, QT Pro allows you to create player displays with multiple audio/video tracks, gives you ability to layer graphic elements (e.g, create watermarks, create pictures-within-pictures, etc,), allow the viewer to switch between alternate audio and/or video tracks, and may other things.
ADDED: If you really want to see what QT Pro can do, check out QTKirk's examples on his DotMac account.

  • User Exit for Stock Placement for Next Empty Bin Strategy

    Hi Techi's
I have got one requirment for stock placement in Warehouse Managment as below:
If client uses the standared strategy for putting stock in Storage Bin as "Addition to Stock" Then the self life of the coming material is being replaced by the existing material's seft life.
And if they use the "Next Empty Bin" strategy then the obove issue is not coming but system always searches for the full empty bin only thus wastage of the existing bin's which already has some space.
Now what my client wants is that to use the "Next Empty Bin Strategy" so that self life is not being overwritten but along with system should not search the complete empty bin for placing the stock rather it should search the bin's which already has some space then later move to the empty bin's.
In summary its a mixture of "Addition to Stock and Next Empty Bin" Strategy.
Please suggest me the Exit for this if available or tell me the code if already has implemented it. Friends its going very hot.
    Please please help me.
    Thanks in Advance.

  • I need help for all you wise Mac users... please

Yesterday, my beloved Mac started acting strangely. Just before that, I uploaded some photos my daughter emailed to my yahoo address. I placed the 8 photos in IPhoto, then tried to go back to Pogo.com where I spend most of my puter time. (Pogo is very Java-based, so I empty the cache, delete cookies and temp files regularly.) Pogo home page just barely loaded, very slow, and none of the games would open. When I tried to stop a game from loading, it froze. I finally had to Force Quit Safari.
In the past when Safari has acted up, the first, and most times the last thing I do is repair disk in Disk Utility. That did nothing to help this new problem. So I came here and started following suggestions I found. So far (with no luck fixing the problem) I have:
    1. Made sure Javascript is enabled in Safari/Pref/Security. It was.
    2. Trashed cookie.plist, then restarted Safari
    3. Trashed Safari cache folder in Library/Caches/Safari, then restarted Safari
    4. Booted from Install disk, repaired HD in Disk Utility (disk was fine, verified no problems)
    5. Did the Apple Hardware test, that was fine (thank goodness!)
    6. Installed Shiira to see if it had the same slow, hang, freeze that Safari has. It does. So, in fact, does Firefox.
I'm sure there were a few other things I tried, but can't remember them now. What the heck is going on with my browsers? And how can I fix them? Help, please.
    ibook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

You have done your homework but perhaps it's the Safari preference file... they can become corrupted. Locate this file; com.apple.safari.plist
It's here: /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate that file and drag it to your Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it still acts up, drag that com.apple.safari.plist file to the Trash. It's the culprit. Reboot your iBook. And your Mac will create a new Safari.plist file for you. You will have to reset your Safari preferences but it just might do the trick.
If this doesn't do the trick, post back. ** You will get more feedback... just be patient.

  • Can I use my iMac as a display for a G5 - New Mac User

I am still a fairly new iMac user, I would like to know if I can use my exsisting iMac with someones elses G5, and use my iMac as a screen display for his G5. Im sorry if this topic does not belong in this forum, I did try searching thru other forums to post and read up on this info.
Please direct me to the right place, or answer my question. Thanks in advance.

Here's the scoop, if you want to use any iMac as an external display for a G5 Mac you have these options.
    1. Target Disk Mode, only available on iMacs with Firewire:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58207
This only gives you access to the data files of that Mac and basically treats it as an external hard disk.
    2. Networking via ethernet, wireless, or Firewire, you can setup Virtual Network Computing or Remote Desktop:
    http://www.macupdate.com/search.php?keywords=VNC&os=macosx
    http://www.macupdate.com/search.php?os=macosx&keywords=remote+desktop
    3. As others have suggested, somehow to remove the VGA cable from the logicboard of the iMac and connect it to the Mac externally.
The external VGA port of iMacs only display what is on the Mac itself and as far I know can't be used in a reverse signal application.

  • For all you old Mac Users

Remember INITS? Small wonderful applications that you could install and just do about anything with. Though I am a obvious now a OS. X user I need a INIT type application.
I am looking for a good, old fashioned Monitor/Display Utility, to simply adgust my Contrast, Levels & Balances.
I have tried the typical ColorSync Utility and the Display/System Preferences Panel and they are... useless[at least for this cause].
Does anybody know of a OS X Utility INIT that can achieved this?

On question, where would you keep files that are not current but not old if you get me. For example, a folder of short, funny movie clips that is added to rarely, but is added to?
The only difference is that I keep my raw footage, for fear of needing it in the future.
I keep all raw footage, i.e. I keep the original tapes.
The finished movies end up on a DVD (also a kind of backup), the TS files are kept on the external in its Movie Folder for instant playback as required, as are those snippets, free title sequences (clouds, waves etc), and bits and pieces one receives from friends and relatives. These all have an alias in the Movies Folder on the internal drive so Front Row can find them. Similar setup with the iTunes library.
My Documents Folder is also backed up regularly on to DVDs, but otherwise just kept up to date as part of the regular cloning.
Not (yet) having a digital camera, my 9000 or so scanned negatives and slides (200 dpi TIFF files, each around 8MB) are sorted in folders by year, each of which is backed up on DVDs, and the entire 'Archive' is backed up on the external drive on two different partitions. Yes, I know, that is like keeping the only two copies of your will in the same safe, but for me that will have to do!
As for fragmentation, that really is not a problem with OS X. Perhaps one could, every year or two, delete the internal drive and clone back from the clone, if you see what I mean. But even via firewire it takes half a day to copy up to 200GB, and life is short enough already!

  • Internet problems for a first time Mac user

I recently got a ibook G3, it was a refurb but works great. It had some updates early this morning which was fine but after I restarted airport says it's connected to my 2wire modem but safari can't find my server. I tried everything I know but I'm new to a mac! Does anyone know what the problem might be? Btw how do I find out what OS I have?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you tried resetting the modem?
To determine which version of the software is installed, click on the Apple logo at the upper left of the display, and select "About This Mac" from the drop-down menu. Directly under the "Mac OS X" title, it should tell you which version you're running.

  • Dual display help for a recently converted mac user

I have a 24" Intel IMac and I wanted to set up dual displays. I may have jumped the gun a little because I didn't do much homework but I found a big cheap monitor at Best Buy which is an HP w2338. I bought that and the mini-DVI to VGA adapter. I hooked everything up and both monitors work but I have a couple small issues that I can't seem to find how to fix. First, I have about a 1.5 inch strip along the left side of my hp monitor that isn't used at all. It is just a black strip that taunts me. When I drag things from my IMac to my HP it drags fine, but it just acts like the monitor is smaller than it is. The resolution on my IMac is set to 1680x1050 and on my HP it is 1920x1080. Second, I have very faint vertical stripes in my new HP monitor. They can be seen the best in the grey parts of my windows. Any help with either issue would be greatly appreciated.

On your 24-inch iMac's screen, the native resolution is 1920x1200. You can use a lower resolution, but the display will seem a bit fuzzy (the pixels are being approximated). So you should use 1920x1200 on the iMac's screen, unless you have a good reason to use something else.
On the HP display, it sounds like the native resolution is 1920x1080. That's the resolution of an HDTV, so it should work. However, when you connect an HDTV, it connects with a digital connection, HDMI. So I think it will work if you connect it HDMI. If that monitor happens to have DVI, use DVI.
If it only has VGA and HDMI, there was a recent topic that was very similar (same display I think). Is your iMac the older model (not the brand new 2009 model) with a Mini-DVI port? If so, take a read there to see if the information is applicable to your situation.
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9247482
Now, if that display you have is different, and it has a DVI connector, please post back.

  • Stock Transfer for Excisable Materials Using Movement Type 301

    Hi,
We are having a Plant 1002 as excisable Materials.
During GR we following the process like GR (Part -I), Capture Invoice, Post Invoice.
Can we transfer the Material from Plant 1002 to other Plant, say 1001, using Movement Type 301?
Or we need to follow some other router for Stock Transfer for the Excisable Materials?
I was told by the ex-consultant that we would be using Mov Type 301 for all Stock Transfers, but I have a doubt, please guide.*
    Regards,

    Hi PK,
Here in Brazil we work with excisable material and when we have to transfer it plant to plant, we have to use IVA that performs tax posts on accounting document. Also, we have to create Nota Fiscal (BrazillianLegal Document).
I think you have to talk to your legal/accounting area in order to make sure which procedure you will have to use.
If you need tax posting on accounting document, then you will not be able to use 301 movement type.
We use MM/SD Plant to Plant transfer (movement type 861 / 862)
Depending on your Legal/accounting area feed back, you could use this scenario or just MM plant to plant transfer (movement type 303/305).
If they are ok with no tax postings on accounting document, then 301 movement type should be used.
Try to make a test, show then how it works, then you could get ok from then
    I hope it helps you.
    Best Regards,
    Natan

I have Photoshop Elements 12 for both PC and Mac (I use both). I have a new camera, Nikon D810. I downloaded the latest version of Camera Raw, 8.8. My D810 is listed as a supported camera model. However, when I try to open a raw photo in Photoshop Elements, I keep getting the message "Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw. I have tried reinstalling Camera Raw many times, and have tried to open many different raw files in Elements, and still get the same error message. Please help.

How did you try to install ACR 8.8.  The only way I know of that works with Elements is to use the Updates Choice on the Help menu.
There are two charts supplied by Adobe that explain your RAW dilemma.  This one tells you what your camera needs:  http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html   This one tells you what version of software you need:  http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
In your case, the Nikon D810 needs Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 8.6 or Lightroom 5.6.  (Congratulations on buying a new camera!)
To get to that level with Photoshop Elements, you will need to replace your Photoshop Elements 12 with version 13.   Adobe caps ACR updates on version 12 at 8.5.
The most convenient way to get around it without spending any money is to use the FREE from Adobe DNG Converter.  Download and install it from here for FREE:  http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=5855&fileID=5890  Once it is installed you can convert your D810 raw files to an Adobe RAW version with the .DNG file extension that most, if not all, versions of the various Adobe software programs can use.  That includes old versions of Photoshop, Elements and Lightroom.  DNG converter can be used as the tool to move your files from your memory card to your computer, is efficient, will convert in batches and is completely lossless.  There is no risk of any image quality degradation or RAW functionality.

You an use your iPhone without connecting it to a computer.
But the product description for the iPhone clearly states that in order to sync with a Mac you must have OSX 10.6.8 or later. That version of the OSX is usually called Snow Leopard. There are two mo recent versions of OSX. OSX 10.7.x (Lion) and OSX 10.8.x (Mountain Lion).
If you can upgrade your computer to at least Snow Leopard I suggest you do so.
