Is photostream in iPhoto safe from deletion?

I'm trying to work out the difference between an iCloud backup of my photos from my iPhone and Photostream and I'd appreciate some help. Yesterday whilst out and about, I got the message that my iPhone couldn't be backed up to iCloud as my storage was at it's limit. Clearly most of this is photos as I have backup photos to iCloud activated. That said, the folder April 2014 Photostream in iPhoto doesn't contain any of the photos I took a few days ago. I only use the freebie 5GB in iCloud and don't want to pay more. As a general rule I backup my phone to my computer a couple of times a month and with it, my photos to iPhoto so I'm not overly fussed about that part.
My question is two parts I suppose, can I drop the photos backup from iCloud and will photostream still exist and function? And, do the photos that appear in iPhoto as part of the photostream remain there or are they deleted when I delete them from my IOS device?

The following is from this Apple document:iCloud: iCloud storage and backup overview
What iCloud backs up
You have important information on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. iCloud automatically backs up your device over Wi-Fi every day while it’s turned on, locked, and connected to a power source. With your device information backed up in iCloud, you can easily set up a new device or restore information on one you already have.
Here’s what iCloud backs up:
Purchased history for music, movies, TV shows, apps, and booksYour iCloud backup includes information about the content you have purchased, but not the purchased content itself. When you restore from an iCloud backup, your purchased content is automatically downloaded from the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store. Automatic downloading is based on iTunes in the Cloud availability by country, and previous purchases may be unavailable if they have been refunded or are no longer available in the store.

  • If all the photos from my iPhone 4s Camera Roll show up in iPhoto under Library- Photos, is it safe to delete them from the iPhone and not risk losing them?

I am getting messages about being out of space on my phone for taking any more photos. I am scared to delete anything with all the photo stream and syncing that happens cause I don't want the photo to delete in many places at the same time.
So, 1) when is it safe to delete from the iPhone? 2) I feel like I have multiple copies of photos stored between the phone, Photos Library in iPhoto and all my albums in iPhoto. Is there a best practice document on how to manage your photos for space savings?
I've looked, but can't find my answer clearly in the forums.

IF you have successfully imported your pictures to your Mac http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083  then it's safe to delete it from your phone.
If you want the pics back on your phone, just sync them back using itunes http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236

  • I imported a ton of photos from my iPhone into iPhoto and after deleting off phone they're not in iPhoto.... HELP PLEASE!

I have an iphone 5S, using version 7.0.4. I had a TON of photos on my camera roll which was taking up space so this evening I synced and chose to import all 600 photos into iphoto (version 9.5.1). It took a while to import all the photos as expected and seemed to be slowing counting down during the import. At the end it told me all the photos had been sucessfully imported, showed thumbnails (or similar) on a roll of them all and asked if I wanted to delete the photos from my iphone. As I was doing this due to a space issue I of course said yes. The annoying thing is that before choosing to delete I clicked on a random photo to import it just to check it was infact already imported. I had the message box telling me it had been imported and did I want a duplicate, apply to all duplicates etc. So I thought it safe to delete off my phone.
Once they were deleted, I now can't find them ANYWHERE on my iphoto. Please someone help me, surely they are somewhere? I really hope so, i have some precious photos special once in a lifetime events with my children. Grateful for any help!

It should. So they aren't shown in the Last Import smart album, right? Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.

  • In iPhoto '11, is it safe to delete aliases in the masters folder?

I'm running the latest update of iPhoto '11.
I'm trying to do some house cleaning and I'm discovering many duplicates of photos because I used to have iphoto copy pictures into the library.
So, I'm getting rid of duplicates, and I keep coming across these folders which have aliases to the original picture (not in the library).
I've noticed that some of these aliases are pointing to pictures that are no longer there (i.e. I deleted them a long time ago).  So I was wondering if it's safe to delete the aliases.
I've noticed that any photos added in '11 dont actually have aliases.  Only the photos added in prior versions.
On a similar note, if it's not safe to delete the aliases, then if I did delete them, would they be recreated somehow? (like, if i rebuild the library database by pressing "command" and "option" on iphoto launch....or something).
Just curious so I can continue my house cleaning.
    Thanks in advance.

It's impossible to say whether it's safe to delete those aliases or not. What you're doing is simply not supported.
There are two possible uses for aliases in an 11 Library. One is linking up the old Library to the new structure. The other is to track referenced files. So, good luck with that.
I'm sure you've thought this decision through but for the benefit of others who may be thinking of this:
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
This is an attractive option for some users at face value, but it contains a significant number of issues that you might want to consider before making the decision to run a Referenced Library
    How to do it:
iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck the box at 'Copy items to the iPhoto Library'
Now when you import iPhoto makes an alias in the Library Package that points to the stored file. Note: iPhoto still creates a thumbnail of the image and it makes a Preview of edited photos inside the Library Package.
    Issues?
    1. You are responsible for file management. That's more work:
You must first move the files from your camera to the storage location before importing.
If you want to delete files then you must first trash them from iPhoto and then afterwards find them in your storage and trash them.
Thereafter, you cannot move the files on early versions of iPhoto at all, on iPhoto 08 and later you may move them on the same Volume or Disk. If you move them to a new volume or disk the aliases my break. If they are on an different volume and you move them the aliases will break.
    You cannot rename the files.
Migrating: moving to a new machine, moving the files to another disk are all a lot more complex.
    2. You gain no extra functionality from running a Referenced Library. Nothing. This is just storage. You still manage the files via iPhoto. You edit them with iPhoto or via iPhoto's External Editor setting, otherwise you're changes will not be available in iPhoto. You don't save  byte of storage space.
    3.  If you have the Library on one volume and the photos on another you if anything changes in the path to a file (Like if you upgrade your machine, move the files on the NAS or on to another one?) then the alias will break, and you'll have to repair it manually. For every photo in the Library. One at a time.
Why do you want to run a Referenced Library?
Because my photos won't fit on my HD?
You can run a Managed library from an external disk. Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
You're worried about accessing the files?
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Safe to delete file from Time Machine hard drive?

Is it safe to delete a file from an external hard drive that's being used for Time Machine backups? The file is not a backup -- it's a .dmg from the manufacturer of the hard drive. Other than that one file, I don't use the drive for anything other than Time Machine.
I'm just concerned because I don't want deleting the file to affect Time Machine in any way.
    Thank you.

I have done it without issue.

  • Is it safe to delete the cache file folder from library

is it safe to delete the cache file folder from library ?

As I understand it Robo doesn't really 'do' third-party
source control. We use SourceGear Vault, but really only as a
repository for the files. We can't really work concurrently because
Robo needs exclusive access to the top level project files. But it
kind of works for us, because we're on opposite sides of the globe.
I see what you're saying on the 'local' versions of (say) the
cpd files conflicting. If anyone else has an informed view, I'm all
ears. We've set it up this way ourselves - I don't know of anyone
doing the same. If someone tells me this is a bad idea, I'm happy
    to think again.
    Cheers!

  • Safe to delete content from the Temp folder under AppData?

    Hi everyone,
Is it safe to delete the contents from the Temp folder (C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Temp) in the SharePoint 2013 web front end servers?
For some reason I see around 30 GB of temp files. Came across
this blog post but in my case ULS logs are still being generated in the D drive. Not sure how those Temp files are being created. Application servers seem to be fine.
    Tried -
changing the ULS log path from D to C and back to D drive (as per the above blog post... no luck)
tried restarting the SP tracing service
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

  • Safe to delete Lightroom from my internal hard drive?

    Hi
I shoot in raw and have been using Lightroom for approx 4 years, most recently Lightroom 4 and before that Lightroom 2. Lightroom is taking up a lot of disk space on my internal hard drive and my computer is not happy.
I have deleted all but a couple of backups and then copied all my Lightroom lrcat files to an external hard drive. Now, Lightroom will only open if I have that external hard drive plugged in. Great! That is what I wanted. Is now safe to delete my Lightroom files from my internal hard drive? I am not that computer savvy and I am also terrified of losing all my work.
    Thanks

Well, if you have them on a single external drive and you delete them from your internal drive, then you have only one copy left, correct? In that case you are at extreme risk of losing your one and only copy.
I worked in the disk drive industry for 30 years and have my lrcat files backed up on three hard drives and two USB sticks. Maybe I'm just paranoid but it's likely a hard drive will eventually fail. And based on experience, for some Murphy's law reason they fail most often for people who have not backed up their data.
I'll bet there is all kinds of other stuff that can be removed from your hard drive, various temporary files, log files, etc. Try a free app like CCleaner (on Windows) to see what it does.
But I would not have just one copy of my latest lrcat files in existence.

  • Why does Itunes Windows download Numbers, Pages, iMovie and iPhotos in Library and I can't even open it. It is taking up space, safe to delete?

Thanks for helping me out in advance. I recently installed Itunes and figuring things out.
So I click the thing that said downloads available and the download screen started dowloading the apps below. It takes a huge amount of space in my tiny hard drive (256 GB), I clicked, double clicked, hyper-clicked and nothing really happened.
Is it safe to delete in iTunes, or windows explorer window? If I delete it would it delete it from my iPhone? Pardon for my newbness..

    Hello traderjohn,
You can absolutely delete those apps within iTunes. If you ever need to download them back in you can do that as well. It should not affect anything on your iPhone and when you sync your iPhone. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

  • I am moving all my iphoto pictures to seperate folders outside of iphoto.  I have found iphoto slighlty cumbersome.  After I move all pictures from iphoto to a separate file how can I delete all the iphoto photos without deleting the ones in the file?

I am moving all of my iphoto pictures into seperate folders becuase iphoto is great, but a bit cumbersome when I need to transfer all the pictures to a external drive.
    1) After I move all pictures, how can I delete the iphoto pictures without destroying the ones I have in files
    2) how can I ensure that I have sucessfully captures all the iphoto files so when I delelte from iphoto I have not forgotten any
    3) is there a way to determine what duplicate pictures I have?
    Thanks!

If you Control click on the iPhoto Library, you'll see a list of folders - one named "Masters". Inside of this folder are all of your original, high-res photos. You can copy them to other folders if you like.
You can't delete iPhoto pics without deleting the ones in the iPhoto Library.
You can copy all of your Masters pics out of the Library, ensuring that you won't forget any.
I don't know of anyway to determine if there are duplicate photos - most (if not all) have a unique name assigned.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • I am not able to delete a backup copy of iphoto library from my external hard drive.

I want to delete a copy of my iphoto library from an external hard drive. This drive is connected via my Apple extreme router. I drag the file to the trash but it just runs and does not seem to delete anything. 39 GB file. It is an older file and I want to clear up space on my external drive.

I figured it out just now.
I unplugged the drive from Airport Extreme and connected directly to the Imac via usb. Dragged the file to the trash and now it is gone.
