Is photostream plus iMac enough of a back up solution?

I take a lot of photos on my phone.
I just bought an iMac. I would like it if every photo on my phone can be backed up to my mac.
At the moment, I've signed in with my iCloud account on both the imac and the phone, and enabled photos. I see photos in iPhoto.
I'm wondering: Do I also have to plug my phone into the imac with a cable and enable syncing with iTunes (wired or wireless) or will the photo stream connection that I have now be enough to ensure every photo will be backed up?

The Photo Stream will send any new photo added to the Photo Stream to your Mac. It will not sync the previous contents of your camera roll. You will have to download that directly.
On your Mac, you have to make sure, that you import all photos from the Photo Stream, for example by setting your Mac to import automatically from the Photo Stream.
Naturaly, to be on the safe side, you then will have to back up your iPhoto library on your Mac as well.
I would not rely solely on the Photo Stream. System troubles or network troubles can require to reset the Photo Stream occasionally, and then the current contents of the PhotoSTream may be lost. Or you may have to restore your phone.
I strongly recommend to regularly connect your phone directly to your mac and to make a backup of the phone using iTunes. That will let you restore your phone from the backup, if you ever need to reset it as a new device. Backing up using iTunes will save the contents of your camera roll, among all other items.
And an additional backup in iCloud is very useful, if you cannot access the backups on your mac in case of an emergency. See: iCloud: Backup and restore overview

Time Machine - "not enough space to back up" despite large drive

I have a 2.7GHz Quad-Core 27" iMac from July 2011. It has a 2TB HD which I back up to an external single partition 2TB HD (WD MyBook) over Time Machine (TM). The iMac HD has about 1.4TB on it.
It was "just working" until about 2 weeks ago, when I got a message that says in essence "not enough space to back up: only 600GB available when 1.4GB is needed". There is one succesful 1.4TB backup. I get the error message hourly as it attempts to back up then fails. Previously there were multiple time stamped (houry, daily etc) backups but when I first got the error message, there was only one left, implying that TM deleted the earlier ones in its quest for more space.
As there is a 2TB drive to back up 1.4TB, there should be loads of space as each backup should just log the changes, not the whole drive.
However, TM is acting as if it needs the full 1.4GB free for each delta backup, rather than just space for the changes. This is new behaviour as it did not need this before.
I have googled the issue extensively, checked FAQs etc and found two potential causes.
The first is that I changed the name of my computer around the time that the problem appeared. This can apparently cause TM to not recognise old backups. I therefore deleted the old one and rebuilt my backup from scratch, hoping that the new name would be used. I was able to do one backup before the same issue appeared again.
The second is that the sparsebundle needs to be resized manually due to a bug, but I can't find the sparse bundle on the external HD, even using Disk Utility (this maty be because I am being very stupid - I am a recent Mac user and do not have much experience of digging into OS X's innards)
I am now at a loss as to what to do.
I would be very grateful indeed if anyone had any thoughts that they could share.

It's trying to do a near-full backup for some reason, and it's already deleted all but the last remaining backup trying to make room. It was probably trying to back up about 1.2 TB, since it adds 20% to the estimated size. That's likely your entire home folder.

No, there isn't a sparsebundle on backups made to an internal or directly-connected HD. Those are used only for network backups.
What else did you do around the same time you changed your computer name? See #D4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for common causes.
I'd recommend turning TM off, erasing the drive and doing a "full reset" per #A4 in that same link. Then exclude most of the large folders in your home folder, per #10 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. Then run a backup, and immediately run another.
If the second backup is more than a GB, use one of the apps in #A2 of Troubleshooting to see exactly what got backed-up the second time. That may tell us what's going on.
If it wasn't large, start removing the exclusions, one at a time. Run a backup (that should back up the excluded item(s), then run another and see how large it is. That should pinpoint the problem.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

It's the 21.5 iMac enough powerfull?

Hello guys! I've got some questions. I decide to buy an 21.5 imac 2.9ghz i5 (2013 october model), i will play a lot of games, editing videous, 3D animations and more. I like the Mac os very much and the fact that it's simple am powerfull no more cabels and dust on components.... its the imac enough powerfull to support my requirements? I will have a decent fps on high-medium details on some games? thanks a lot!

The iMac is very powerful and has a terrific graphic processor, but just how high-end are you going with the gaming? Some high-end, especially 3-D, gaming puts a big heat load on the system. If that starts happening, some users have found placing a fan at the back or blowing across the back helps keep it running cooler.
Be sure to order with all the memory you are going to need since the new 21.5" models cannot be upgraaded post-purchase.
You will also see better performance with things like editing if you get the Fusion Drive as that is really fast...combines an SSD and hard drive.

I deleted pictures from my camera roll using my computer since i didn't have enough space to back up my ipad in my 5 gigs of space. but after deleting a huge amount of pictures. the size of the camera roll is still the same as when i started.

I deleted some of them -this time from the ipad itself- but the size of the camera roll remains the same. should i have not remeoved them using the computer for the camera roll.

Not photos, just data synced with iCloud shown in Settings>iCloud. If you don't have sufficient storage to back up to iCloud, back up to your computer instead using iTunes (connect you phone to your computer, open iTunes, click on the name of your phone in iTunes, go to ths Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings and click Back Up Now). Also transfer your purchases to your iTunes library (connect your phone to your computer, open iTunes and go to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases). If you have photo stream photos older than 30 days tha you wan to save, save these to your camera roll before backing up (tap Select, tap the photos, tap the share icon -- box with upward facing arrow, then tap Save to Camera Roll).
When setting up your new phone, when given the option choose Restore from iTunes Backup and restore the backup you made earlier.

Thanks for the question. Based on what you stated, it seems like you are getting a message when trying to backup to iCloud. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.

No, there is no way to put more content then there is capacity for on the device. As wjosten mentioned, you might be able to edit that backup to remove things to reduce it in size where you could then restore it to the new device, but obviously, everything that you had on the old iPhone will never fit on the new one.
No matter what you do, you are going to end up with less content on the new device then on the old one - there is no way around that fact other than returning the 32GB iPhone and getting a 64GB one. A gigabyte of data is a gigabyte of data, regardless of device, and will require a gigabyte of storage again, regardless of device.

If it is a matter of storage space, any files you no longer need or can move off to an external drive. If that isn't what you mean, you might want to post some additional details.

Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
Wait 15 seconds.
Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.

IMac does not turn back on from sleep mode

Hi all,
I've having a problem sometimes that my iMac won't turn back on after I put it into a sleep mode. This does not happen everytime. After the machine does not turn back on, the only workaround is to unplug the power cable and connect it back. Then I'm able to turn on the iMac. After the machine boots up, and I will get the crash report said that the machine does not turn it off properly.
I tried to reset the SMC before and it did not resolve the problem.
Any idea?

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

There is your problem. DVDs that ship with a Mac are machine specific. You will need to purchase a retail copy of the DVD $29.
