Is PORTAL a good career move?

I was very impressed by WEBDB (Oracle's predecessor to PORTAL). I have not worked with PORTAL yet. I would like to know how people feel about PORTAL's capabilities/deficiencies. Also, I would appreciate your opinion on how well PORTAL fits into and will survive in companies that already use other WEB development products... Thanks in advance

Is it possible to post a good issue movement before post the good receipt movement for the same material, into the same period?
We try to explain better, today we've done a test:
Step 1 :   We have created a material, wich material type is HAWA, with price control V, and 1 euro for 1 ST.
Step 2 :   We have post a good receipt movement, 561 of this material with 1000 ST of stock, and on posting date: 05.05.2011.
Step 3 :   Then, we have post a good issue movement, 562 of the same material, with 500 ST of stock, on posting date: 01.05.2011 ( so that, the posting date of the 562 is before from the posting date of 561).
And it has worked, so that on trx "mb51" for this material we saw:
PLANT1-----STO1---- 562----- Mat. Doc.101.05.2011--
500-   ST
PLANT1-----STO1---561Mat. Doc.205.05.2011--
1000 ST
And with "fbl3n" for this G/L account , the same situation:
G/LAccount1--DocumentNo101.05.2011--99--
500- EUR
G/LAccount1--DocumentNo205.05.2011--89--
1000 EUR
We don't like this fact, someone knows how is it possible? The negative stocks aren't flagged!!!!

Hi,
Though sap allows like this ,, the document created will be with the date of the actual posting system date. If you look into the MSEG table you will get to know this.
In theory .. this kind of practice should not be allowed .
since this is a 562 which is a individual entry may be system would have allowed.you try a 102 .

SAP only checks if there is enough quantity in the period (month), it does not check if there is enough stock at date level.
there is no stock stored in any table for a given date. SAP would need to run the logic of MB5B to calculate the stock at a certain date, this would cause tremendous performance issues.
you either have to do this calculation yourself in a user exit, or you better train your users.

Is VFX a good career choice?

I don't know if this is the right place to put this, but i am just going to do it anyways.
I am a sophomore in highschool, and I am really trying to just figure out what I am going to go to collage for, and what collage to go to.
Previosly i was thinking of going to school for 3d modeling for games and stuff, because I really like to do that, but I am seeing a decline in the gaming industry, and now am not so sure that would be a good choice. I also like doing VFX allot, so I was thinking I would do that.
If I do end up doing VFX I would probably go into 3D compositing, like NUKE. I could also do allot of modeling sort of jobs.
Really I am just wondering about things like:
-how expensive is school
-how hard is it to get into (like i know in videogames they say things like "minimum of 2-7 yrs. in industry, which makes it hard to get the 2-7 yrs. because you have to start out somewhere.)
-once in, how hard is it to get hired
-is it a thing where you work for a company, or is it job to job freelance
-What is the adverage sallary, is it enough to live off of?
-Where would i probably have to move to get these sort of jobs (california or something?)
i know these are allot of questions but i am really just wondering what my options are, any information would be nice.

I was thinking more about poster's question, and comment about engineering interest...and would like to add this bit of info...
Most VFX stuff is to some large extent 'recreating' reality with models, using stuff like maya or else really high end proprietary programs ( stuff pixar etc would use ). Maya is being used a lot now on sets with "live" view of models being shown on monitor when shooting green screen ( surveyed targets on grid ). If poster does search for pan am tv series he might find my references to that stage setup here...with targets and explanation of that little camera mounted on top of alexa..
Anyway, like I said, maya is being used a bit now and some searching on google will pull up info on the company that did the VFX for pan am, and poster can check out their system(s ) used.
It turns my stomach to think of the potential comments now about how pan am was not a good show, but that's not the point.
Anyway, recreating real life gets into a lot of subjects. Namely enineering ( civil, mechanical etc ) and physics. Trying to make " computer smoke " act like real smoke requires knowing something about how real smoke acts and why.
So all the subjects poster can take for engineering will help in VFX anyway.
Furthermore, mechanical drawing would help a lot in both engineering and VFX. For example Autodesk CAD is used a lot for mechanical drawing now in schools... and Autodesk Maya is in some ways similar.
Here's sample of my choo choo train ( a tutorial I should some day get back to )...notice the top, front and side views ( and the 3/4 view )... the 3/4 view can be rotated etc as desired..all sceens can be zoomed in to individual parts etc. CAD drawing will be the same.
The menu systems will be somewhat similar re: the GUI...in other words, if you hit the spacebar a 'menu' will come up on screen...and looks like THIS.. .makes it faster than going to the top menus and so on...
With regard to nParticles and that sort of thing...it's a lot of physics... and math too, including some pretty advanced stuff...having to do with quantum physics etc. Searches on internet will show poster that...look for " maya physics computer AI " and stuff like that... Some of the plug in type things for maya are developed by professors teaching at good colleges around the country ( MIT etc ).. who experiment with how physical things 'act' and put that into context mathematically and so on.
As for the pursuit of career path etc, since these two things ( engineering and VFX ) coincide at least as far as science and mechanics is involved... there are at least some things to start studying immediately ( drafting etc )...

Good Issue movement type

Hello MM and CO Gurus!
I am facing the following issue with my customer (Utilities).
They will be working with non valuated materials for the devices they use
At the time of GR they capture the cost in an SAP Order (account assignment in PO is F)
Since they are utilities company they will perform stock transfers using 311 within the warehouse and U61/U62 for the grid storage location . None of these movements will have FI postings assigned.
Once per year they will tranfer the cost from the order to assets for installed devices
Once per year they will transfer from assets to different account for removed devices
They use reports for these task and they will perform them manually
But in SAP when they scrap the devices they need to perform a Goods Issue.
I was thinking about using 551 standard movment for scrap but I need a cost center for this purpose.
Since the material is non valuated can a dummy cost center be used for this GI ? Does it have any impact in accouting/ controlling ?
Can this approach also be used with movement type 201?

As the material is "Non-Valuated" system directly post the cost to "Consumption entry". As you said , P.O is having account assignment category as "F" i.e maintenance order etc..
Once GRN is done system post the actual cost to "Maintenance Order".
As you said your business will transfer the cost to assets from order.
And If they are scrapping the devices as an "ASSET", at the end
Prerequisites:
If ASSET is treating as Equipment in SAP-PM, all open maintenance orders of the Equipment (ASSET) should be closed and cost of the equipment should be settled.
Asset which is integrated with Equipment should be dismantled from functional location and deletion flag should be assigned.
Transaction Code:
ABAVN - Asset retirement by Scrapping. With this, we scrap the asset and remove it from the asset Register.
or
F-92 : Asset retirement by Scrapping. With this, we can scrap the asset and remove it from the asset Register.
Then build scrap stock using maintenance order in that functional location and do scrap sales if required.

GOODS RETURN MOVEMENT TYPE 202

BUT SAME MATERIAL HAS BEEN RETURNED QTY 3    MVT 202.
HOW IS IT POSIBLE WHERE CAN I CHECK THIS

Mvt type 202 is technically the movement type for reversal of 201 mvt type ( issue to cost center ).
This mvt type is picked up automatically in case of cancellation of 201 mat docs .
But when manually a posting is done using this movement type , this is deemed as good as initial stock entry .
Same will be the case when u post a 262 mvt type directly .
It is highly recommended to be extremely disciplined in directly posting such document . The system will never check it if it is a cancellation .
Also in case issued are to be reversed , always cancel the 201 document .

Goods Issuance: movement type 303 and 305

What happens after performing movement type 303? Is it automatically charged to the receiving plant? Or does the receiving plant have to perform 305 first before it will be charged to them?
What will happen if movement type 305 is not performed? Can a plant do 305 without doing 303 first?
Hope you can explain the whole process of 303 and 305..

303 and 305 are two step transfer postings where issuing plant issues stock through movement type 303 to stock in transit and the stock stays in transit until the material is received by the receiving plant through movement 305.
If 305 is not performed, the stock will remain in transit and will keep on showing in MB5T report as stock in transit.
Without 303, 305 cannot take place. 305 is continuation of 303.
I guess the entries for 303 will be
Issuing plant - Credit
Stock in transit - Debit
Then at 305
Stock in transit - Credit
Receiving plant - Debit
Basically two step transfer posting is required for reporting and tracking purpose, where when stock is in transit, it should show in report that goods are still in transit and when the goods are received.

Personal: career move from SD to APO

I am an SAP SD consultant with nearly 4yrs of exp and I would like to move into APO.
I am trying to find what the best way to do this is.
As a first step, I am planning to get trained in the following courses (internal training offered by my company)
> SAP Core Interface APO
> SAP GATP (Global Available to Promise)
So would like to hear experiences of the fellow consultants who moved over from R/3...what's the best transition strategy, any mistakes that you could have avoided...any other experiences..

Welcome to the world of SAP SCM
starting with GATP to leverage your SD experience is a good move I would say
but my opinion is GATP in itself is not a substantial area. I would also suggest you have a look at Demand Planning which is relatively easy to pick up but is a totally different concept. DP -GATP might also have some common areas .So add on DP to your list. Even if you dont get training there will be enough material to learn on your own
CIF is something that all SCM consultants should be knowing anyhow (except the Pure DP ones). just make sure you dont get stuck with the job of monitoring CIF

STO Goods Issue Movement Type 641 vs 603

I created a STO for stock transfer. During the Goods Issue against delivery, the system is picking movement type 603. Is this right? I have always seen 641 for issuing goods against STO outbound delivery.
How to make system choose movement type 641 for goods issue against STO outbound delivery.

As expected, why do u choose to use UL, and why not NL?
If you continue to use UL, may be u should ask your SD consultant to change the schedule line category to movt type 641 or change the existing schedule line category movt type to 641..

Hi,
U can not assign a G/L to this in OBYC. Just a debit or credit entry should ne maintained.
Purchase order with account assignment (KBS)
You cannot assign this transaction/event key to an account. It means that the account assignment is adopted from the purchase order and is used for the purpose of determining the posting keys for the goods receipt.
Can please elaborate the error more.......

Need some suggestions on a possible career move.

I have Labview training and continuing with more advanced training. I want to pursue a more challenging career either in avionics or other aerospace field. Any suggestions as to the direction to go? I do not work for a major aerospace company. What companies, etc. I am looking for something more challenging. Learning Labview was exciting, challenging, and stimulating. I see a lot of areas to use it. Do some companies hire specific Labview programmers? Unfortunately no one in my level of the avionics field even knows about Labview and what it is.

Sure lots of companies hire programmers. For instance select integrators and alliance members hire LV programmers. In these companies most of the time you will get the opportunity to work with a variety of applications sometimes including aerospace, avionics, etc. Try looking on the ni website under the alliance program you might find some companies to contact.

Titles created in LiveType good in .mov but don't dub well

I handed a DVD created in iDVD with a .mov file that looks perfect, but the person making a dub said the dub came out with the titles pixelated or distorted.
Any s you can offer will be most appreciated.

I typed in "Final Cut Pro" and it came up with only "Final Cut Pro X" as a choice. My LiveType files were exported to my FCP project, so it seems this is something FCP users would deal with. Please let me know where I should be asking this question.

(To your "I don't know what you're trying to do," I'd say I'm trying to make my graphics come out in the dubs the way they look in the original. They're fine in .mov played in Quicktime and they're fine in the original DVD burned from my iDVD project. They're NOT fine when the IT guy I handed the DVD to puts the disc through a dubbing facility. The new DVD shows pixelated gfx.)
