Is Portege R500 3G compatible with Vodaphone?

Does anyone know about the internal 3G on the R500-3G125 as I can find no detailed information anywhere?
My boss is attracted by the internal unit, having had problems with an external stick modem.
I am trying to find out if it will take our existing Vodaphone service.
They can only tell me that they only support the SIM card, and anything betond that is up to the manufacturer.
So does the R500 have a SIM card slot or how does it work, and does anyone have experience of using Vodaphone or another service provider on it?
Any help greatly appreciated.

Ok - having found the 3G part of the forum (should have looked closer before!), the answer seems to be yes it is, the sim slot is behind the battery, and there can be problems with Vodaphone sims but there are fixes available although Vista SP1 could be problematical.
Looks like we'll be getting an R500-3G to add to the fleet!
If anyone has anything to add. would still be grateful.

  • Portege R500: XP installation with USB external CD/DVD drive - SOLUTION

    Hello all !
Just wanted to take five minutes to inform you that installing XP on a Portege R500 with USB external CD/DVD drive is possible, even if you already have erased Vista and only with a bootable CD of Win XP in hand.
First go into your BIOS and check / set first boot device is CD/DVD drive
Start your installation of win XP from the CD without the F6 thing and let it go his way
After a while, the installation stops and says "can't find the file xxxx" and you are invited to say where this file is
You "just" have to replace the drive letter "C:" that is given by default with the drive letter of your CD/DVD (and let the rest just like it is) and the installation will continue until the next "can't find..." and you will again replace the drive letter, etc..
After a complete "manually assisted automatic" installation, you are welcome in Win XP !
Next question is "Where can I find my CD/DVD drive letter ?" and the answer is "this is the next letter after your last HDD letter" (I consider you have only your Portege with nothing else plugged than your CD/DVD) so in most cases it will be "E" because C: is the first partition of your HDD and D: is the hidden / recovery partition that win creates.
But do not worry, if you type the wrong letter you will have as many tries as you wish until you find the good one and for the following "can't find..." it will remain the same.
I hope these pieces of information will help some of you who want a clean install of win XP starting from a newly formatted HDD.
    With kind Regards,
    Mage.

    What a great information!
Thanks a lot for this posting.
I think it could be useful for others here.

  • Portege R700-14J - Compatible with Express Port Replicator II?

Today I received my TOSHIBA Express Port Replicator II (PA3680E-1PRP) to be used with my TOSHIBA Portege R700-14J (PT311E-023006DU). I seem to be unable to fit the notebook easily into the docking station.
Please let me knwo whether this port replicator docking station is *the right model* for the Portege R700-14J.
    Thank you
    Bert van Loon

    Hi mostlymedia,
I have a little bit searched using Google and I found that Port Replicator II is compatible with Portg M750 and Tecra A/M/R/S Series but no information about Portege R700 :(
In my opinion you should ask the ASP in your country if its the correct part or not before you do something wrong.

  • Portege R500 - Shuts down with AuthenTec software installed

    I have a problem with R500 (PPR50E-06W011PL). I bough it brand new Januar 4th, 2010.
Installed XP Pro and then all the drivers (lates versions available) in the order indicated in the manual. I have very quickly realized shutdown problems (sometimes with blue screen for less than second) when waking up from hibernation or even screensaver. It was in almost every second wake-up. After reading all the info I found on this forum I have decided to uninstall AuthenTec Fingerprint software. Since that time my R500 has never shutdowned itself and you should know I hibernate it few times each day. However, this is not a solution as the fingerprintreader software should operate correctly without causing OS problems.
Has anyone met such problem? If yes, has it been solved? How?

    Hi buddy,
I also think your notebook is 100% ok and its just a software or configuration issue from your side. You wrote that on Windows 7 everything works fine What do you think about Windows 7, is it option for you?
The problem is that Windows XP is the past and therefore you will not get much updates anymore. Now everything will be tested and released for Windows 7 I think and its really good operating system.
So I hope Windows 7 is an option for you and it would be interesting to know if you have the same problems on preinstalled OS (Vista).
If you dont like Vista, disable the Vista designs. Then it looks like XP! :)

  • What is operating CPU temperature on your Portege R500 ?

I have an Portege R500 series notebook with U7600 processor, and would *like to know what other users average operating temperature is for normal desktop use* i.e. word processing, watching DVDs/youtube, surfing the net, etc.
I'm asking because I've recently bought a second-hand dock (port replicator ii), and also upgraded the OS on the laptop. It seems to me that there may be a problem, because under heavy usage (compiling software) the performance seems to degrade on the machine - only solution seems to be to power off the machine and leave it off for a few minutes.
Even when I'm not doing anything heavy - such as typing this post, the CPU temp lingers in the high 80's (celcius).
I've seen on the forums that other people have had problems with overheating on this laptop model. My machine is about three and a half years old. I've opened it up and cleaned the fan with compressed air, and verified that it actually spins when powered on. However, I don't feel much airflow if I put my hand next to the exhaust when it's on.
Can someone confirm if the exhaust is supposed to s u c k or expel the air? Can you confirm your average CPU temps? Anyone know of issues with the dock that cause overheating?
    Thanks in advance!

So, after finding this page on the internet:
    http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2006/01/04/toshiba-laptop-overheating/
I decided to take my laptop apart to see if there was anything obviously wrong with the cooling solution. The first time I noticed the fan was covered in dust; I cleaned it with compressed air. But this didn't seem to make much of a difference.
I then removed the fan and noticed that the thermal interface material seemed really 'worn out'. i.e., it was spread thin on the CPU, and there were solid chunks around the surface of the cpu, where there is no contact with the heatsink. So I wiped it all off and put some coolermaster compound I had used on my desktop PC.
The result was obvious: 60C idle, and a max of 73C with both cores at >50%.
The other thing worth mentioning is that I noticed that keeping the laptop lid closed when it's on the dock 'traps' the heat, and raises the temp by a good 5C. So now I make sure I always keep it open.
Hope this will help anyone else having the same problem.
*I'd still be interested to know what other users temps are* , for comparison.

  • Portege R500: Which port replicator with DVI could be compatible

    Hi,
Does anyone know which port replicator with DVI supports the portege R500 notebook.
When I look at the product and it's accessories no one of the port replicators lists the portege R500 as a supported notebook.
Perhaps there is not one as of now?

    Hi
I also used the Toshiba Options & Accessories website for the searching and I found these parts:
    - Dynadock - Universal USB Docking Station with Video (DVI) Phase 2 PA3542E-2PRP
    - Slim Port Replicator 2 PA3603E-1PRP
    - USB 2.0 Port Replicator II (Ethernet / EU Version) PX1173E-1PRP
If you need more details about these single devices then google simply for these part numbers.

  • Portege R500 - compatibility with Intel SSD 320 160GB

I have installed an Intel SSD 320 160GB in my Portege R500 (PPR50E).
However, the BIOS does not detect the new drive. I upgraded the BIOS to the 1.60WIN version , the newest one I found, but the drive is still not detected.
Is there any possible solution? Or I have to throw the drive away?
    Thankyou for any help

    Hi,
thankyou for your answers, but finally I got it.
Previously I tried to do it cloning the drive with Norton Ghost in another computer, but maybe I did not select a correct formatting of the drive, I'm not sure. The point was that it did not work. The Portege R500 said something as insert a drive to continue. And when I tried to start with a CD of Windows XP SP3 installation it said that there was no drive available for the installation.
Nevertheless, when I started with a Ubuntu CD I could access to the drive for reading, but no installation was possible.
Then, I upgraded the Portege BIOS, but it did not work.
Finally I found the Intel software for migration of SSD disk, and it was much easier. I followed the steps, it did the cloning (hopefully I had an external USB-ATA conversor to do it) and changed again the Toshiba drive to the SSD. Without much hope, I turned on the computer ... and it worked! Everything was OK, nothing was changed ... and as expected, it works much faster.

  • Portege R500: login screen don't work with fingerprint

    Hello!
    I have Toshiba Portege R500.
When i used Windows Vista - i have any problem.
Now i install Windows 7 and so: if notebook was restart or shut down - on login screen of windows don't work biometric.
Only enter password from keyboard. If hibernate or sleep - all ok, biometric work normally.
    I was try Windows 7 32bit and 64bit.
    Same problems.
    Help me, pls.

    Hi
    Please check this:
+Useful information regarding file protection with the AuthenTec Fingerprint software+
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB9C02RC0001R01.htm
The fingerprints will not be deleted by uninstalling the software.
The fingerprints are stored in fingerprint sensor flash.
You have to delete the fingerprints using the fingerprint software.
If this is not possible, then you will need to contact the Toshiba ASP technician for this job!

  • Portege R500 logs off spontaneously with no user input

My Toshiba Portege R500 has a strange problem where it logs off spontaneously without any user input. This has happened since approximately 2 weeks into ownership and happens once or twice per day.
There is no consistency in when or why this happens. The machine can be idle, or I can be running a variety of software. There is no consistency in the software I have running when it happens. The machine will just suddenly display the Windows XP "logging off" dialog box, then commence log-off. It gets to the "Saving your Settings" stage then hangs. I then need to force a power off and reboot the machine. This happens regardless of whether the machine is running off the battery or mains power.
This doesn't seem to be heat related, as I would expect heat related problems to simply power the machine off, not actually go through the log off procedure. There is nothing in the event viewer and it does not seem related to any particular software. I have tried recreating my local profile and the problem still occurs.
My technical services department have been told that Toshiba Support will not look at this problem unless we try a full rebuild of the machine first. I find this a bit extreme and would rather they looked at resolving the problem instead of just wiping the whole thing and re-installing Windows XP.
Has anyone experienced this? Any ideas what could be causing this?
    Thanks,
    Derek

    Hello Derek
Is WXP your own installation or you got WXP recovery media?
To be honest for such problems is really not easy to find an answer and to find any logical explanation can take hours of investigation. If your case is an isolated case I do not see any sense to spend so many times and because of that I can understand the support guys.
The fact is that Toshiba must guarantee that recovery image will work well. And because of that they can say: let us make new WXP installation and see if the problem persists. At this point where you make some changes on preinstalled OS and install some non-supported software there is a new situation and it is not easy to offer simply answer to every strange issue.
I am really interested if someone else will report about the same problem.

  • Portege R500-11K with UMTS/HSDPA/EDGE/GPRS module XP drivers

    Hi everyone,
I have some pre-sales question about nice R500-11K notebook.
I would like to install XP pro on this machine. Device is shipped withou XP recovery CD. (model 11C has it)
There is nice collection of XP drivers for R500, so I can install XP manually.
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=EU&mode=allMachi nes&action=search&teddProduct=747
Model 11K has unlike another models UMTS/HSDPA/EDGE/GPRS module installed. Great!
What about drivers for this module?
There is no any UMTS/HSDPA/EDGE/GPRS modem drivers listed In the device drivers list neither for Vista or for XP.
So question is, if I want to manually install XP, where I can find the driver for 3G module?
Is the driver component of another driver?
Do anybody know the name and type of this 3G module? I believe module is provided by aint Toshiba vendor.
Do anyone have any experience with XP on R500 11K?
    Thank You
    Marek

    Hmm you are right.
The 3G driver is not available on the Toshiba page
Seems the driver was not uploaded however the Portg R500 was delivered with a *Novatel MSM6275* ThreeG card (Qualcomm should be chip manufacture) and if you want you could try to download the driver from 3rd party site.
    Good luck

  • What digitizer pen is compatible with Portege Z10T-A

    Hi All,
    I have the z10t-a i5 telstra 4G cellular model.
This model did not come with the digitizer pen or stylus and i am wondering if the pens are compatible.
The support website says the pen is compatible with the Z series but am not sure.
Can anyone shed any light on the subject.
I would hate to spend the money on an accessory that did not work.
    Cheers

    Hi guys,
I found also some details about the Toshiba Digitizer Pen with Eraser
Part number: PA5133U-1EUC and this digitizer pen is compatible with the Toshiba Portg Z10t, Z15t Ultrabook series and 10 Excite Write Tablet PC
    Further details:
+Using this digitizer pen, you can write directly on the screen and save your notes in your own handwriting - or convert them to typed text for use in other applications. The pen can also handle common mouse and keyboard tasks like opening applications, selecting text and displaying menus. Since the grid provides the power to the pen through resonant coupling, no batteries are required. Keep a spare pen handy.+

  • Portege R500: cannot connect the remote DVI monitor via Dynadock

    Hello,
I just connected Dynadock (DVI) with my Portege R500. The notebook would be supported -- according to Toshiba -- but my experiment confirms that Dynadock is not able to access DVI port. This implies, that Dynadock is nothing more than USB HUB.
My setup: Vista 32b Business (CZE edition), latest fixes, Toshiba R500.
    Software: latest dynadock software 2.3c.
Symptom: I cannot connect to the remote DVI monitor via the dynadock, only two external panels with 800x600 are available, but Vista does not allow me to choose them.
More info: Dynadock Software requires to run without Microsoft Defender, else it blocks service:DisplayLinkService; file:C:\Program Files\DisplayLink Core Software\DisplayLinkService.exe
If you disable MSDef, the message "error 2738" appears when you connect the dynadock and when Vista tries to install a missing drivers for you.
Yes, I do know the VBS issue, and the problem is not caused by VisualBasic -- VBS "Hello World" runs.
If you still believe, that Toshiba Dynadock is compatible with Toshiba R500, then press Fn-F5 and peek at your logs and you must find something like:
In English: igfxext.exe throws an exception 0xc000000d, offset 0x0000f9f8.
I welcome any comments, hints etc. If you are able to pass this bug report to a responsible engineer, do so please.

    Hello again Leo
I still believe you are wrong. Toshiba Dynadock is not designed for Toshiba products only. It is universal product and can be used on every notebook. To be honest I believe it is better to use it with new, more powerful, notebooks.
When you sat your notebook model is listed as compatible I believe you. Why not? Toshiba can list all newer notebooks. No problem at all. To be honest I am also interested to buy Dynadock but after reading your posting I wanted to see how it works exactly.
I have contacted my friend because he works in one big electronic store and I was lucky because he had Portege M500 too.
He was very nice and offered me to test Portege M500 SSD model with Dynadck PA3542EY1PRP. I hope you have the same model. It is DVI model. So I have done follow:
    - Portege was preinstalled with clean Vista OS (factory settings started for the first time)
    - I have installed latest Dynadock Utilitiy for Vista 2.3c
    - Installing this software you must pay attention about installations steps and the installations procedure should not be interrupted
at one step there is window Installation Complete but it is not complete and must be continued with
    Display Link Core Software installation
    Video Dock installation
at this point the Dynadock must be connected to favorite USB port NOT FROM THE BEGINNING
    - At the end I have restarted notebook
The installation was finished properly and I have connected 20 Toshiba Tekbright LCD display (DVI cable). The native resolution is 1680x1050. in Display properties there are shown three displays. Display number 3 belongs to display connected to the Dynadock.
Resolution 1680x1050 was there and display shows perfect picture. I have tested it as extended desktop and it works without problems. I didnt test it playing some movies.
I have also tested it with FN+F5 key combination. It does not work as it should be but there is definitely no error message. I know that FN+F5 key combination is not designed for external graphic card and I know that it can not work well.
At the end I can sat that Dynadock works well with Portege M500 SSD and there is definitely no error message. It works with Vista very well. I have tested it with screen saver and with few restarts. Nothing changes. Everything was OK.
So after this test I can say that you have done some mistake. If you want to use it again I recommend you to install Vista again using recovery image. After doing this you will have clean preinstalled OS. Install software but please follow the menu on the screen and be sure all three components are installed properly. If I am remembering well when you see message about USB audio device installation you must connect Dynadock and continue installation.
PLEASE FOE DYNADOCK USE ALWAYS THE SAME USB PORT!!!
Sorry for this long story but I can say for sure IT WORKS PROPERLY!!!
    Have a nice day!

  • Portege R500 upgrade to Win 7 64 bit: touchpad scroll lost and no driver

    Dear All,
I have upgraded the OS of my portege R500 to WIndows 7 64 bit and had the following problems:
    1. At first the touchpad scroll worked fine (with no driver installed) but then it stopped working .... so I looked for a driver but
    2. There are no driver for the touchpad (Alps) that is recognized as a PS compatible mouse
BTW uninstall and reinstall did not work, and I have searched a lot through the web but found no solution.
I have downloaded the drivers for VISTA 64bit, is it safe to use?
    Any hints appreciated, thanks.
    Simone

    Hi
    >I have downloaded the drivers for VISTA 64bit, is it safe to use?
Yes, its safe You can try to install touchpad drivers for Vista in worst case you will get a error message that this driver is not compatible or will not work.
But listen dude there are Win 7 Alps and Synaptics touchpad drivers for Win 7.
The drivers have been released for other notebook series.
Check the Satellite L500 area for example
    I found Win 7 64bit drivers:
    Synaptics v14.0.11.0
    Alps Electric v7.x5.303.117

  • Portege R500 - Ctrl Key not working

    Hi Guys
I have two toshiba portege r500 which have never really be used since purchase about 2 years ago.
Today I get one out to start using it and find the ctrl key is not working which I thought was strange.
After a little browsing I could not find a solution so I simply got the other identical laptop out and starting using that only to find the exact some problem.
The laptops are both running XP.
One of which I have reformatted and uninstalled the keyboard driver to see if that would solve the problem but it did not.
Any others. Many have suggested that it may be due to a damaged keyboard cable but I think it would be highly unlikely that they would both break in the same way.
    Thanks in advance

Connect an external USB keyboard and check if the button would work.
If the button can be used with external keyboard then the internal keyboard is faulty and needs to be replaced.

  • Portege R500 connection to Toshiba 19AV505D LCD TV

I want to connect my Portege R500 laptop to a Toshiba 19AV505D LCD TV.
I have tried using a VGA to HDMI cable and altering the screen resolution to 800x600 and 16bit colour but it still won't recognise the tv.
    Any ideas?
TheTV manual says use a DVI to HDMI cable and I tried this first with a VGA converter (as there is no DVI socket on the R500) but it didn't work either.
Would a SCART to VGA cable work?

What VGA->HDMI adapter are you using?
What version HDMI does it support?
Maybe the TV requires HDMI v1.2 or v1.3 (check the users manual)
