Is Premiere Elements 8 junk, or is it just me??

I made many movies (10) using Pinnacle studios over the last 5 years.  While I had various problems none even came close to the frustration I am having with PE 8.0.
I've upgraded my PC to what I believe to be a reasonbably fast machine for moderate home use.
My specs are
3.3 gigahertz Intel Core i5-2500K
8 GBYTE  Memory
128 GB SSD with all my program files, including PE8
Windows 7
1 TB "user" drive with all my Media
I have been unsucessful at virtually every step of the way when trying to edit my home movies.  The program runs incredibly slow.  I've dug through all of the information on here, and followed every step.
I have a number of small videos loaded from an hd video camera, with a total size of less than 1 Gbyte.  CODEC H264 from a VADO HD  mini cam.
I this CODEC is not supported why doesn't PE8 indicate that?
I've tried moving all the media to the SSD and running the whold program on that drive, but the program crashes every time I try and add media.  (No indication why)
If I run off my user drive, I can eventually get about 10% of the video on the timeline before I run out of memory and the program crashes.
I've tried to render the timeline, and it appears to randomly render some of the clips, but not others ( by virtue of the red bar turning to green).
Then it crashes on an out of memory error.
I increased the swap space, and increased the amount of memory allocated to programs as indicated in one of the forums.
All of my SW is licensed and up to date.
I've got enough hours into this that I should now be an expert user, but I've yet to produce a single thing.  In fact I've yet to edit a single video because I can't even get the media loaded.
Right now It appears I've wasted my $200 and 200 hours of time and should try something different.
Any last minute assistance would be appreciated.

While a bit of an exaggeration, "there is nothing simple about video editing... "
OK, that is not true, BUT video has many inherent complications, such as CODEC's. This ARTICLE will give you some background on them, what they are, how they work, or do not work, and considerations to make, regarding them. As they are the "building blocks" of Video files, knowing the basics, is a great foundation. Where is gets tough, is that camera mfgrs. are constantly adding new ones, or tweaking existing ones. These changes come so quickly, that even a pro editor, is hard-pressed to keep up with them all, how they work, and which NLE (Non Linear Editor) programs, can work with them. To add to that confusion, there are many CODEC's, that are really delivery-only, and are not meant for editing. Some will, but many will not, at least not easily. Also, some NLE programs, like Apple's FCP, use intermediate CODEC's, and many will ONLY work in FCP, or might ONLY be available for Mac's, leaving ALL PC's out of the mix.
With that said, in PrE, or actually most NLE programs, one needs to start with a Project specification that matches the Source Footage, as closely, as is possible. A 100% match, will usually mean few, or no issues in the editing.
Finally, one is then faced with the choices for output, or Export/Share. At that point, there can be many choices, and depending on what one needs to do, maybe a lot of testing also. This ARTICLE will offer some tips there.
As you can see, all of this must be considered, before any real editing begins. The ads make it sound easy, but when just starting out, it is not. However, once one gets their head around the basic concepts, then things get so very, very easy.
When everything was SD, there were few choices, or considerations. Basically, it was "am I in PAL, or NTSC-land? Do I have Standard 4:3, or Widescreen 16:9?" Then it was "do I want to output to DVD, a file to play from a Website, or an AV file delivered in some other way?"
HD eliminated at least one of those questions (Standard 4:3, or Widescreen 16:9), but brought so many other variables into the equation, from "is this Anamorphic footage," to "Is this AVCHD, HDV, MP4/H.264, or something else completely different?" Throw in the variables added by camera mfgrs., and it CAN get confusing. Still, with the concepts nailed down, it DOES get much easier. Trust me on that one.
If one has MOV, or MP4/H.264 footage (note: MOV can hold a lot of different "stuff"), and one only wants plain Cutting/Joining, and then output, I agree with Steve, that QT Pro is a good little program to use. It IS simple (with compatible footage), and will do the Cutting/Joining easily. However, that, plus file conversion, is as far as it goes, regarding editing - simple, but limited by that simplicity.
Good luck, and happy editing,
Hunt

  • I own photoshop elements 6 and premiere elements 4 (p/n 29180383). Just bought a Lenovo Y50-70 touch, can I purchase an upgrade?

Can photoshop elements 6 & premiere 4 be upgraded for use on a windows 8 Lenovo Y50-70 touch? The upgrade option on the Adobe site doesn't list my software version?

    Hi Rosera,
This is bad and I am sorry to hear that you are running into these issues.
Let me connect with you, so right now, the current state is that you have installed copy of PSE 8 in trial on your windows 7 machine, and when you are trying to enter the serial number from your PSE 8 Box, it is saying the serial number to be invalid?
It might sound pretty obvious, but please make sure that you are entering the serial number correctly and of PSE 8(in case you bought a PEPE box)?
Have you tried the steps mentioned below by Barbara?
If possible, you can send me the serial number through PRIVATE MESSAGE and I can check it on my end that whether the serial number is indeed invalid or that the issue is with your machine?

  • Premiere Elements 12 does not start after error message: display driver is incompatible

After successful installation and starting Premiere Elements the following error message appears: "Uncompatible display driver identified. Update the display driver for a better and faster playback performance!" Hopefully my translation from German is helpful enough. I confirmed with OK but unfortunately Premiere Elements does not start. I checked the display driver: it is the most actual one: AMD Radeon HD 7610M. Furthermore the hardware should be OK as well: ASUStek with an Intel Core i5-2450M CPU @2.5 GHz; 6 GB RAM; 64 Bit Windows 7 Service Pack 1. What can I do?

    Moonkeys25
Recap...please confirm that as of this date, the problem exists with or without the antivirus and firewall(s) disabled.
    Moving forward...
If you issue was specific to the display card error that you have been getting then probable conclusions
    a. the ADM Radeon H7610M driver version is not up to date
    or
    b. the ADM Radeon H7610 M video card/graphics card installed as is is not compatible with Premiere Elements 12 on your Windows 7 SP1 64 bit
The updated driver version and the BadDrivers.txt file deletion should have corrected the problem unless there is a gross mismatch between Premiere Elements 12 and ADM Radeon H7610M.
Did you use the link that John posted to get the auto detection of the latest driver version for the ADM card?
If we have gone as far as we can with the card and its driver version angle on this, then we can try the generalized troubleshooting drills with no guarantees, just hopes
    1. Delete the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file and, if necessary, the whole 12.0 Folder in which the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists.
    Local Disk C
    Users
    Owner
    AppData
    Roaming
    Adobe
    Premiere Elements
    12.0
and in the 12.0 Folder is the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file that you delete. If that does not work, then you delete the whole 12.0 Folder in which the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists. You just need to make sure to have the computer's Folder Option Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives active so that you can see the complete path cited.
    2. If "1" has no effect on the issue...uninstall, ccleaner run through time, reinstall with antivirus and firewalls turned off.
    a. Control Panel/Program, select Adobe Premiere Elements 12, right click the entry and click on the Uninstall pop up. Then follow the instructions for the uninstall.
    b. Download and install the free ccleaner for a computer run through to get rid of leftovers from incomplete uninstalls and installs.
    https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download
When you are ready for this step, I will give you a step by step through the ccleaner (regular cleaning part and registry cleaning part).
    c. Reinstall from your installation files or installation disc, with antivirus and firewall(s) disabled.
Please review above and then let me know if I have interpreted correctly where we are in the troubleshooting. Do not start the above plan until we are in agreement on the details and hoped for results.
    Thanks.

  • Premiere Elements 4 - Cannot open project file with write access

I have most of my video files on a network share drive.
However, I am unable to create the "native" files on the share (and also cannot save to them.
I must generate the new files (.prel) on a local drive (and therefore save new renditions to this location).
Is this a problem with Premiere Elements 4.0?
Should it just be run locally or can it be used on a network share?
    Thanks

I do not believe you can use Premiere Elements on a network, Wayne. Especially if network is something other than an XP network.

  • Which files need installation for Photoshop and Premiere Elements 9

In the list of files for download for the Photoshop and Premiere Elements 9 Plus package that I just purchased,
(Windows 7) there is a single "Premiere Content ALL" file of ~4.2GB.  There are also 6 files called "Premiere
    Content 1" (and 2 2nd 3), and "Premiere Content 1 HD" (and 2 and 3).
After smooth installs of the PSE and PRE programs proper, in doing the install of the "Premiere Content ALL"
file, it seems like the "Content 1-3 and 1-3 HD"  files were included in it (judging by the file nmes flashing on
the screen during the install, and in poking around in the install directory).
What I would like to know is: are the 6 Content 1-3 and 1-3 HD file included in the Content ALL file, and if so,
are they at the same revision level as what's in the Content ALL file.
I don't want to just try installing the individual Content files over the ALL file install, as that might well screw
    something or other up.
I tried getting an answer to this on the phone with Adobe support, but could not get an unambiguous answer
from either of the two support people I spoke to.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks ...
    /kim

Thanks for the reply.   The real question though was/is are ALL the files contained in the 6 separate content archive files
(Content 1, Content 2, Content 3, Content HD 1, Content HD 2, and Content HD 3) also contained in the single archive
    file called Content ALL?
Since I was unable to get a definitive answer to that question, I went ahead and downloaded all 7 of the Content archive
files, extracted all of the archived files in the *.7z files and compared the timestamps and sizes of the files in the 6 individual archives to the timestamps and sizes of the files from the "ALL" archive.   The files within the 6 archives matched those
    in the ALL archive.
And since the sizes of all 7 *.exe files are identical, I suspect they are all the same and simply invoke an unarchiver
for their respective 7z file, using their own filename as the argument to the builtin program.
The overall result is that I have verified to my own satisfaction that the contents of the 6 individual Content XX files
*are* contained within the single Content ALL file.
It would have been NICE if Adobe had bothered to TELL their customers that, so they wouldn't spend twice the time in
downloading 6 unnecessary files which in reality just duplicate the ALL file.   Plus in my case, spending an hour or
two verifying that the contents of the 6 files were also in the ALL file.   Sheesh.
    C'est la vie ...

  • Premiere Elements 4 Scratch disk error / clips off line

    Hi,
I am a new user to Premiere Elements 4.0. I have just started teaching Media Studies and am attempting A Level coursework, and am having numerous problems.
    1. We have been editing for some time. Today, when trying to access a project (all projects are stored on a designated drive of a school system), a notice popped up saying there was a scratch disk error and the project could not be opened unless the scratch files were put in the My Documents section of the school system. What does this mean? Is the project lost to us for good? I have a copy saved on an external hard drive and the same message popped up.
This occurred after editing successfully earlier in the morning.
    2. Projects which will open are appearing with all the clips offline. Where have they gone?! We have changed nothing since our earlier editing session today.
    3. In the earlier successful editing session, one group tried to capture some new material. All the new clips they saved appeared as being offline, and then their existing clips went offline one by one.
    Any advice / suggestions?
Thanks you so much to anyone who can help explain this.
    Sarah (In Panic!)

  • Should I use premiere elements for editing 24p DSLR footage?

Have been shooting with a t4i in 24p and am doing some small business videos - I need some advice on whether I should use premiere elements to edit this footage.  Also need to be able drawing lines, add arrows and animate them etc.  Is this beyond premiere?  Have been using elements for about 5 years on and off, maybe time to step it up?

    fishmor
I do not see why not.
It is getting late where I am so I will leave you with some things to consider -
This is what I have found ouy about 24p mentions in Premiere Elements that seem to have no function...

As for ability to draw lines, add arrows, and animate them, etc. See program's Titler and its Text Styles Animations Shape sections.
The Premiere Elements Titler offers more opportunities than just text titles. But, sometimes you may want to create a graphic in Photoshop Elements and import it into Premiere Elements. Keep in mind that Premiere Pro is not a photo editor either. Some things that I have done in Premiere Elements in the way of animation....

  • Adobe Premiere Elements 12 start up problem.

I just purchased and installed Adobe Premiere Elements 12.  I have a new pc with windows 8.1. Premiere required that I run the program as an administrator (???).  So I ran it as administrator and it starts up, but then immediately closes itself.

    mattjay84
Thanks for the update on the issue details.
Bottom line: I am suspecting an Open With directive problem.
    Details.....
Please excuse the questions, but I do not want to take anything for granted
Checking the Creation of a New Project
    a. If you double click the desktop icon of Premiere Elements 12.1, does the program open to the Welcome Screen?
In the Welcome Screen can you then select Video Editor followed by New Project to open a new project?
    b. Can you open the program and a new project by double clicking on the Adobe Premiere Elements 12.exe or Adobe Premiere Elements.exe found
    Local Disk C
    Program Files
    Adobe
    12
and in the 12 Folder are these two files. The Adobe Premiere Elements 12.exe should open to the Welcome Screen and the Adobe Premiere Elements.exe opens bypassing the Welcome Screen.
Checking the Opening of a Saved/Closed Project
Now for your workaround...You right click a video file on the hard drive and select Open With and have the opportunity to select specifically Premiere Elements 12. It works. You have a new project, edited, and you save/close it. But, it is the re-opening of that saved/closed project.prel file that I suspect as being at the core of the problem.
so I double clicked the project file I had been working on and it said 'The project is not compatible with current version of Premiere Elements' (even though I had only just saved it from that version).
Where is this project.prel file that you are double clicking to re-open your saved/closed project? And, how do you get to it? What is its hard drive save location - Libraries/Documents/Adobe/Premiere Elements/12.0? If so, what happens if you right click the project prel there and select Open With, followed by Premiere Elements 12?
    Please review and consider.
Looking forward to your follow up.
    Thanks.

  • Premiere Elements 4/Photoshop elements 7 - grayed out menu

I am a total newbie with no artistic skills at all.  I am just trying to create a DVD using ONE clip.
I want to create a still shot from the clip to use as a menu background.
According to the Premiere Elements 4 help screen I should just have to click on the camera and then have the OPTION to edit the image in Photoshop Elements.  For my setup this option is grayed out.  All I can do is save the image as a .bmp (bitmap).
Can someone tell me why this is?  Did I do something wrong in setup?
Is there a good book for PE ver 4?
    thanks

    Thanks Barb and Steve
You have both answered my question.
Now if I wasn't so intimidated by the software I might try it
Do you think it would make sense to upgrade to version 8 of both?  I am thinking of upgrading to a new PC since this software is such a resorce hog!
I really need to get some books altho I read the PSE 7 missing manual and it described features that didnt work on my PC!!

  • PSE9-some pix change orientation when moved to premiere elements

When I create a slide show in PSE9 and try to create a DVD in Premiere Elements 9 some of the pictures (just a few) invariably wind up sideways- i.e. 90 degrees from where they appear in PSE9. This happens for both horizontal and vertical pictures. How can i prevent or corrrect this?

Not sure why this is happening unless you are not using camera EXIF data to determine orientation. But you can correct.
When you output to PRE your project opens as a single item in the Sceneline.
Right click on the project in the Sceneline and choose “Break Open PSE Slideshow”
You can then highlight an individual frame so that it appears in the main window. Click on the main window to get the bounding box and you can drag the corner handles to rotate into the correct position.

  • Premiere Elements 13 XAVC s files

Anyone know if Premiere Elements supports XAVC S files, I just bought a Sony RX100 III you can record in XAVC S format and am thinking of getting Premiere Elements 13

    g287y
Are you using a NTSC or PAL setup?
Premiere Elements 13, like version 12, has project presets and export to file saved to computer hard drive settings for XAVC-S video at the 3840 x 2160 resolution (described as QFHD resolution). Put be advised on their availability NTSC vs PAL.
    Import
    NTSC Project Presets
(QFHD resolution Project Presets Only In NTSC)
    Export

  • Premiere elements 9 bd disk only h264 and no mpg2 hd?

premiere elements 9 blueray disks video format, I only seen h264. In pr el 7 you have h264 and mpg 2 hd settings.
Is the missing hd mpg 2 blue ray settings in premiere elements 9 normal or is it just my demo install?
Can somebody please check for me?
    thanks

If you are shooting in any hi-def format, the video will need to be re-encoded when you produce a BluRay disc regardless. Even if you're feeding HDV in and gettiing MPEG2 out for your BluRay, the video is still being encoded to BluRay format -- so it's not more efficient to create an MPEG2 BluRay.
In fact, since all BluRay players can play H.264 video and since H.264 is a more advanced codec, it makes much more sense to go with this codec for all BluRay discs.

  • Premiere Elements 4 crashes with "cpp-283

New install on Vista 32bit Ultimate
Uninstalled the previous version and installed Photoshop elements 7.0 and Premiere Elements 4.
When I try to run Premiere it crashes.
I have run Photoshop elements, and I created a new catelogue as suggested elsewhere in relations to this error.
    Any thoughts?

I would go to Windows Update and ensure I had even the non-critical updates. Then I'd ensure I had the latest version of Quicktime.
Then I'd uninstall Premiere Elements and run a registry cleaner. CCleaner is great. Windows Advanced System Care, from IOBit software, is also free and not only cleans your registry but it clear temp and other junk files.
You might also want to go to C:/Documents and Settings/[Owner}/Application Data/Adobe and change the name of the Premiere Elements folder to "Premiere Elements OLD". Then reinstall the software.
All if this is assuming you've got plenty of RAM, a fast processor and at least 30 gigs of free, defragmented space on your C drive.

  • Premiere elements 8 causes my system to crash, suggestions?

premiere elements 8 causes my system to crash, suggestions?

Version 8 was a bit unstable upon release anyway. Have you downloaded the patch for it?
Meantime, can you please give us more information? Can you be more specific about the crash? Does it literally cause your computer to shut down and reboot?
At what point does it crash? As soon as you start it, or after you've added media to it? If the latter, what model of camdorder is this video coming from and what format and resolution is it?
What operating system are you using? Have you manually gone to Windows Update and installed the non-critical or optional updates that do not install automatically?
How fast is your processor, how much RAM do you have and how much free, clean, freshly defragmented space is on your hard drive(s)? Remember that even brand new computers are a mess of junk files and defragmentation.

  • Premiere Elements 13 - crop then zoom work - output does not

New to Premiere and so probably not understanding some concepts (probably applying idea around images incorrectly to videos).
I have a an old clip I'm trying to test with - so for starters it's in 640x480, AVI format from an old Canon digicam
There is a bunch of junk on a table on the left side of the clip and I can trim some of the top as well. What I've tried:
Use Crop to remove the areas I don't want.
Then check the "Zoom" box and the remaining area "fills" the visible space in the editor - perfect so far.
But when I try to export the results to a mp4 file the results look nothing like the editor. I have some of the area from the left cropping back, and cropping i did not do on the right has now occurred so I've lost some of my actual content.  I'm hoping this is a simple thing for people who use this regularly - I've had no luck on Google
Thanks in advance if you can offer a newbie some tips.

A lot depends on your source video. Some video formats are less accurately displayed than others.
What model of camcorder is your video coming from and what format and resolution is it?
What are your Premiere Elements project settings, as listed under the Edit menu?
