Is PREVIEW still part of Mountain Lion

I may be wrong, but it looks as if Apple has abandoned PREVIEW in Mountain Lion. If so, what replaces it? If  not, how do I acces it? I can get to the PREVIEW menu, but it's grayed-out. In other places, the screen says something like, "The Classic version is no longer available".

Old Toad, Barney, and Linc Davis,
Apple calls it an update; I call it a major overhaul. Judging by the changes that were reported, I had expected the "updates" to be completed in a minute or so, but the whole process must have taken 30 to 40 minutes. I just wonder why I wasn't advised about the update as soon as it became available.  Anyway, it's done now, so I'd like to thank each of you. Funny thing, though, when I check "About this Mac," it still only says, OS 10.8.5. You'd think that with all of the changes, that it would at least mention (COMBO).
Just thought I'd mention that I updated it by using the software update button in "About this Mac".

Yes, see > OS X Mountain Lion - Apple Store (U.S.)
You could also go to Mavericks, see > Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mavericks.

  • Can I restore the Snow Leopard version of 'Preview' for use in Mountain Lion?

When running Snow Leopard I enjoyed using Preview with my HP C7280 All-in-One Scanner/Printer.  I could place several items on the glass plate and Preview would then carry out a "preview scan". The superior edge detection software contained in Preview would recognise that there was more than one item on the scanner glass and put a marquee rectangle around each object (even separate images in a magazine page).  I could de-select objects if I wanted to at this point to avoid scanning them, or I could opt to scan.
Preview would then scan all selected items in one go outputting a separate file for each one. No need to re-scan and select the next object.  Preview would do the lot in one go! This was fantastic for saving  time for me.
Preview really 'kicked the crap' out of my PC at work. The best the scanning software on the PC could was to auto-detect a single item.*  So if I have a lot to do, I have to preview scan and then save/scan each item individually to achieve the same result.
All this changed when I updated from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.  The scanning is nothing like as effective and time saving as before.  Preview just scans the whole glass plate straight to a file irrespective of what is on it, no preview scan and no object edge detection whatsoever; not even a single object like on my old PC at work. Absolute rubbish!
I really want to restore the functionality I had before. So I wonder, is it best to revert my iMac to Snow Leopard, or can I achieve this another way?   I don't necessarily want to abandon Mountain Lion - but I will if I have to.
Is it possible to restore the Snow Leopard version of Preview whilst keeping Mountain Lion? Or maybe download the Lion version from somewhere instead - assuming that the Lion version still has same functionality as the Snow Leopard version?
*Even this is better than what Preview does since I updated to Mountain Lion

It's either that or finding other software for your scanning needs. For example, Image Capture comes with OS X, VueScan 9.2.09, ExactScan Pro 2.24.
Alternatively, partition your hard drive and install Snow Leopard on another volume.
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Open Disk Utility and select the drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.
    2. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive. Use the Snow Leopard installer DVD to install Snow Leopard on your new volume.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.

  • Preview hangs whole saving Mountain Lion

I just installed Mountain Lion and am having problems using preview to scan from my Epson or HP all in one printers.  The scan happens ok but it hangs when I try to save the image on my PC.  During save or close the program hangs.  Also when trying to save on my PC it does not save the file.
    Appreciate advice on this.

    Hi,
Go to System Preferences > Notification Center and adjust the settings for the Messages app
The Notifications can be turned Off (None) but the Badge icon can be left On and you get the red DOCK indicator next to the app's icon.
The Alerts and Banners show at least part of the Messages in the Notifications that pop up.

  • How can I use "Preview 5.0" in mountain lion?

    Heya,
The scaled-back features for making notation in Mountain Lion Preview is getting me down. I was using Preview to make detailed, indexed, correlated notes on research materials, but the cosmetic changes to highlight and note tools just can't meet my needs; there are too few options. I've lifted the old version of Preview (5.0.3) from an earlier version of the OS, hoping to uise that for my notating, but it cannot be opened:
Note: I renamed it to prevent confusion. Having the original, expanded features back would really help with my work. Anyone know a way to get the old Preview to open?
    Cheers!

There must be a reason - anyone know what in the OS is blocking this, and why Apple would go to these extremes?
Often, it is because the system level files the app relies on to function have changed enough in the new OS that they won't work with the old version of the app.
You can get an idea of what's involved by launching the current version of Preview, then launching Activity Monitor & double-clicking on the Preview process in Activity Monitor's list of processes. In the window that pops up, select "Open Files & Ports." You will see that it requires various System level files like frameworks, extensions, & data files. If any of these files work differently in the new OS version (& many of them usually do), then the old version of the app is likely to be incompatible with them.

  • Contacts Smart Groups Still Broken in Mountain Lion

I have been waiting for Mountain Lion, in hope that Address Book / Contacts bugs would be fixed.  Regretfully, they have not.  Smart groups using the query "not a member of" still do not work.  It would have been wonderful it it did.

I have tons of photos in my camera roll on both my iPhone and iPad, so this is not the problem.
Also, the cable connector is not the problem, since iTunes detects the iPhone and iPad 100% of the time correctly. The problem appears isolated to Image Capture (and iPhoto).

  • HT4882 This no longer seems to work since Lion was installed and still not with Mountain Lion.

It seems this feature has stopped working only since Lion (now Mountain Lion)was installed. I wil try an old copy of an earlier OS as an external boot to check but this appears to be anOS upgrade problem.

The Swedish site you've linked is discussing .xmodmap, which is a hidden (hidden because of that leading dot) configuration file in your login home directory that's used to customize settings for the keyboard mapping within X11.
I'd expect the XQuartz tool to read ~/.xmodmap in your login directory as part of its initialization sequence.
The xmodmap tool (no leading dot, and not a hidden file) is an application that's used to process the configuration file.
When you invoke xmodmap (the tool), you either need to specify the full path /usr/X11/bin/xmodmap for it to be found and invoked, or you need to have the /usr/X11/bin/ directory added to your PATH.  Your PATH is the list of directories where OS X looks for the tools you're invoking.
If the xmodmap tool is not working, are there any diagnostics?  Or is XQuartz not honoring the request?  (If so, see if it will honor the setting made via the .xmodmap configuration file.)
And if you don't get an answer here, you might try the (pretty quiet) Apple x11-users mailing list.

  • IMac still overheating with Mountain Lion

Am still suffering WAY higher temps on my i7 iMac after installing Mountain Lion
CPU Core is 150 F while I do nothing but surf the web
Ultimately the mouse will move but be unable to perform any action
Need to unplug it from wall to shut it off

You're not alone.  I have both a 2010-2011 iMac. Both i7 with 16 gigs of ram.  Audio stutters, overheating, crashing, and now a memory leak.  I've spoken with apple and I haven't gotten anywhere yet.
I spoke with a buddy who has 18 of these iMacs at his work.  Mountain lion crippled them all.  So, good job apple.  If your goal is to shrink your Mac business, you're succeeding marvelously.  If not, fire the idiots in OSX development and hire competent staff. What an embarrassing time to own a Mac.

  • I have preview 6.01-with mountain lion and it keeps crashing

Is there an update or a patch for prview to use with mountain lion 10.8.2?

    Hi Carol,
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
    And/or...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • Set preview as default in mountain lion

I've tried using command + i  or control click to bring up the get info box to reset open with to preview but I just get a general info box with 5 tabs that do not seem to have this option. I tried uninstalling Schubert but the plug in is not in the library.
I would prefer to return from Schubert to preview in opening PDF's. Where am I going wrong?

Some additional information. By dragging a PDF onto the desktop I was able to see the get info page and Open with: was set to: Preview (default) use this application to open all documents like this one.
So it appears that my issue is with the Safari browser since the PDf's open within the Safari tab when I click on a PDF to open. This is when I get the Schubert plug in.

  • Does FCP 7 still works under Mountain Lion?

    Hi,
It's very important, before I update my MackBook Pro to know if Final Cut 7 still works under this new Operating System, since I'm in the middle of a Project that's in that FCP version.

Is anyone using QT broadcaster? Is it still a viable option with the latest OS? Is there a better solution for live broadcast? I want to do a live web presentation that could have audience feedback and also record it for streaming availability. I haven't seen anything about QT Broadcaster recently and wondering if it has been dropped or is it still an option?

    Quit FaceTime:
With the Finder active, hold the Option key down and click on the Go menu. Select Library. In that folder select the Preferences folder. In there look for these two files and trash them:
    com.apple.facetime.bag.plist
    com.apple.FaceTime.plist

  • Is there anywhere I can still get a copy of Final Cut X for OS Mountain Lion?

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro.
Since I upgraded to Maverick's, my computer has become painfully slow and started randomly restarting.
I rolled back to Mountain Lion but when I tried to Download FCX from the app store, it would only let me download a version for Mavericks.
Is it possible to still get a Mountain Lion version of FCX somewhere?

Lion won't work but Mountain Lion should give you access to 10.0.9 on the App Store.
Install the latest compatible version of an app on an earlier version of iOS or OS X - Apple Support
