Is Product key required in Updating from Windows 8 Single Language to Windows 8.1

Hello,
I have bought Lenovo laptop with Windows 8 Single Language recently and it's showing the Windows 8.1 update is available.
My doubt in this regard is, While installing will is asks for product key or not.?
And whether the preinstalled apps like office13 McAfee will remain or removed from system..?

Hi,
If your PC is running Windows 8 or Windows RT, it's free to update to
Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1. And unlike previous updates to Windows, you'll get this update from the Windows Store.
For more information regarding update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 about destop apps/ user accounts and so on, please check:

  • Downgrading from windows 8.1 single language to windows 8

Hi, i want to downgrade my laptop pavilion g6 2231tx from windows 8.1 single language to windows 8 which came in default with my laptop.
My question: since my lappy came pre installed with the windows 8 (64bit) and then got upgraded. So if i refresh my pc via the recovery partition on my HDD will it revert back to win 8 or do i have to use the recovery discs i made and will i lose my entire data on C:
Reason :  i am facing a lot of issues with my laptop recently specially while gaming i never faced any issues with gaming earlier when my lappy was running win 8 no lag or drop in fps as such but since i upgraded (which was against my will as microsoft one fine day decided to throw win 8.1 down on my face) . Some how was able to get the amd radeon switchable graphics back up and running but it seems it has no practical use over there  as such
apart from that my computer  has degraded in performance since i have upgraded i tried to use win 8.1 since the past 1 year just coz it had all my programming IDE loaded and removing it would just be all the more hassel but even those applications have started responding really slow now most just take up hell  lot of load time.
    my system specs are :
2.4 GHz Intel Core i3-3110M processor
    4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM
AMD Radeon HD 7670M (1 GB DDR3 dedicated)
Looking forward to your early replies. thanks in advance

I am not going to try and talk you out of doing this -- you are the administrator.
You might be in for a rough ride regardless of which path you take back to Windows 8.
Standard Refresh removes your installed programs and your installed Browsers -- the security programs -- everything that is not "bare bones" -- and that assumes that it will work.
READ please and know what you are trying to do:

The Recovery Partition may -- or may not -- still be in working order.  The Upgrade to Windows 8.1 may have destroyed the Recovery Manager.
Before you do ANYTHING, please back up all your data to an external drive -- back up your most critical data to more than one place, perhaps to a USB drive or to Cloud >> somewhere so you can get to it.
What if your home made Recovery Disks do not work?
You might call HP and see if you can purchase a Recovery Set.  Because you have a working computer right now, you might make the call BEFORE you take apart your Operating System.

    hello,
i just bought a new laptop a Samsung laptop to be specific and it came with windows 8 single language activated but i cant see the update to windows 8.1 i need help! please

    Hi,
According to your description, you cannot see the update in your store.
If you’ve opened the Store and you don’t see the update, it could be for one of these reasons:
1.You might need the latest updates from Windows update.
2.Windows Store might not be showing the latest content.
Please refer to the following article:
Why can't I find the update in the Store?

  • Windows 8 upgrading to pro from standard/single language edition pricing, whats your thought on this

    Hi All
Being in the Tech industry and working day to day life of users issue i have noticed that, even though uncommon, i would need to upgrade from windows 8/8.1 to Pro, and my clients, with this general question, Why is it so expensive if i already got windows
8, shouldnt it have most of the features and now we just buying the addons? Basic response is yes they are right but you're actually purchasing a WHOLE key and not a partial key from MS. But it does leave a section of question, why should i spend $118 - 140
to upgrade to Pro when most of the features are already built in?
Shouldnt microsoft upgrade the key and just install the missing features at a lower price ? e.g if single licensing is $90 and pro is $110, they charge u $20 instead of $110. I understand it about money and such, but i believe more people would upgrade to
pro easier if the price was adjusted like that instead of it current strategic plan of a full price of Pro just to gain some basic features like Domain ability.
    Whats your thoughts?

    Hi,
For windows 8.1 as an example, you need $99.99 to add the Windows 8.1 pro pack and get the
Windows Media Center and the power of Windows 8.1 Pro.
    http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Windows-8.1-Pro-Pack/productID.288392300
As I know, Windows 8 pro has added some important features such as Hyper-V, GP, VHD, bitlocker, domain..etc which are essential for business management\small organization.
You can find the comparison list in the following link
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/enterprise/products-and-technologies/windows-8-1/compare/default.aspx
We don't have the "power" to change the price :) so I just want to share the links above with you and hope you can understand the value of Windows 8/8.1 pro.

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 evaluation product key?

For whatever reason, WS2012R2 evaluation is asking for a product key.
i downloaded it from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter, mounted it to a USB and tried to install it on a fresh drive. It asks for a product key.
I found this thred, https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/475d3b03-c67e-4ef5-83d3-24e31a586a1e/download-the-evaluation-windows-server-2012-r2-product-key?forum=winserver8gen but it didn't help.
    Any suggestions?

The evaluation ISO does not require a key. If it is asking for a key, it may be a bad copy.

  • Using Windows product key

QuestionCan I use the product key on the bottom of my computer to activate Windows?
AnswerAcer’s OEM version of Windows does not require a product key to activate. This means if you are using recovery disks you created on your system, or disks you ordered from Acer, Windows will automatically activate without the need for a product key. The product key on the bottom of the notebook is an OEM product key.  This product key does not work for activating retail versions of the operating system.
If you did not make or are no longer able to obtain recovery media, you would need to purchase an operating system of your choice for installation.

  • WINDOWS PRODUCT KEY - for reinstalling WINDOWS

What if your computer comes with NO Windows Product Key sticker -- computer came new with Windows 7 preinstalled but, included Windows  8 installation discs - never needed a key & should've (in hindsight) made a boot repair disc - but, recently computer would NOT boot up - tried to repair it but, no luck -- SO, now if I want to reinstall Windows 7 will have to use an OEM but, need a Product Key for HP computers --- any time else you install Windows you are REQUIRED to enter your own Product Key # which is about 25 digits including letters, numbers & dashes ---------- I do have Windows 10 on another drive but, love Windows 7 -- Windows 10 is far better than 8 BUT, not as good as 7 I have looked all over my case for any WINDOWS sticker & inside too -- I have heard that laptops are usually under the battery but, for DESKTOPS will be stuck somewhere on the case & this does NOT have one -------------- it is just STUPID for HP to ship computers without a PRODUCT KEY as every other manufacturer does for this reason..THANKS

Hi,  Goodmorning! Uhm as far as I know Operating System of these unit didnt came with product keys, because operating system of this unit is from the manufacturer, And it was never been installed using standalone discs by hp. You might need to order recovery discs online on its support website. as far as I know. Hope you dont mind.

  • Windows 8 Product key back

    Hi
I bought few years ago HP p6 2490eo desktop pc.
It had Windows 8 preinstalled, but on box it didnt have any cd for windows 8 key.
Then i installed WIndows 10, but i thought its stupid so i uninstalled it.
And now i have installed windows 8.1 preview thing and pc wants me to activate windows 8 again.
But i cant find any product key if i look from BIOS it only shows my windows 10 key.
So is it possible to get my windows 8 key back if i send like proof of purchase?
    Thanks

Windows 8 key is embedded in the BIOS, so if you installed the correct "edition" of Windows 8, it should activate automatically.  If you used Windows 8.1 to install, then maybe READ THIS to get a way to insert the key.
BTW: I doubt HP will help on this matter.

  • Need To Find Product Key For Windows 8

It's my son's laptop and I bought it brand new in January 2013. It crashed two months later. I tried to get help through HP but to no avail. They told me to update the BIOS, which I did, and it worked for maybe a week and crashed again. I had a friend wipe it and start over twice after that because it just kept crashing. I then called HP, since it was still under warranty, to have them send me a new one since this one was obviously defective and the lady with whom I spoke said she would have someone call me back to help me. This never happened. I just gave up on it and bought another laptop in March 2013...the same exact brand, model, specs, etc. and have had absolutely NO problems with it since. I've since decided that it merely needs a new hard drive, which I am more than happy to purchase and install. It is the only thing my son has asked for as a Christmas present this year. The problem I have is that I don't have the product key for the OS. It came installed with Windows 8 and I have read through several other messages and understand that it is not something you can buy, however, I do believe, and feel that I am entititled, to have the product key so that I can properly fix my son's laptop. After all, it was a defective laptop/hard drive with which to begin and since HP support was actually of no support whatsoever HP should be willing to help with this situation. I have only ever used HP for desktops and laptops and have since 2001 and this is the first product I have purchased that was probelmatic.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Hi:
Microsoft did away with OEM product key stickers starting on all PC's that come with W8.
The OEM product key is now encoded into the BIOS in order to prevent it being used on other PC's.
So, your notebook does have a product key.
You just can't read it and if you order recovery media for the specific model notebook, or use a Windows 8 OEM installation disk you won't need the key.
It will automatically enter itself during the installation.

  • Is there any "contraindication" about installing every updates from Windows Update (and Intel drivers)?

    Hello!
The question is in the title.
I decided to reinstall Windows 7 on my MacBook Air using Boot Camp and I'm trying to play a video game which is quite laggy. I downloaded and installed the lastest driver for HD Graphics 4000 and my computer didn't explode. Can I also download all the optional updates with Windows Update, including the ones concerning drivers? I read somewhere that we shouldn't install other drivers than the ones on the Boot Camp x.x Support Software installer... Is it true?
    Thanks!

    Peter,
From what I read, I thought Internet based clients always download from Microsoft Windows Update first?
"New in System Center 2012 Configuration Manager, when you have a software update point that is configured to accept connections from the Internet, Configuration Manager Internet-based clients on the Internet always scan against
this software update point, to determine which software updates are required.
However, when these clients are on the Internet, they first try to download the software updates from Microsoft Update, rather than from an Internet-based distribution point. Only if this fails, will they then try to download the required software updates from
an Internet-based distribution point. Clients that are not configured for Internet-based client management never try to download the software updates from Microsoft Update, but always use Configuration Manager distribution points."

  • Windows Server 2008 SP2 X86 Product Key Issue

I am trying to create a VM using a Template, but facing an issue with respect to Product Key.  The VHD I am using is of
Windows Server 2008 SP2 X86.  If I do not provide Product Key in the Template/Guest OS Profile, the Virtual Machine creation fails even before starting. Seeing this behavior, I added a dummy key to the Guest OS Profile/Template which allowed
me to deploy the machine, but the VM gets stuck at Customization before failing. When I take the remote console of the VM, the Error I see at the Remote Console is:
Windows could not parse or process the unattend answer file for pass. The settings specified in the answer files cannot be applied. The error was detected while processing settings for component [microsoft-windows-shell-setup]"
So, I am confused now what to do.
    Is dummy key supported?
Do I need to provide the actual key in the Template/Guest OS Profile?
