Is Quad slower than Mac Pro?

I read Apples benchmarks about the speed of the Mac Pro. However, as they were so far off with other models in the past I thought I would ask here what Quad users are finding as a speed difference between the basic retail Mac Pro and the Quad.
Geek Patrol says overall it is a 7% difference:
http://www.geekpatrol.ca/blog/135/
I bet the Quad will actually be the speed winner when it comes to Adobe applications for the next year.
In addition, the Quad has a faster PCIe bus. See the barefeats article for details at:
http://www.barefeats.com/quad05.html
Happy Mac'ing,
Michael

Here is some more tests that indicate that the Quad is 20-37% faster than the Mac Pro when used with Adobe applications. However, the Mac Pro can be 35-47% faster when working with Final Cut and iMovie.

  • Data transfer very slow on mac pro!! mac H/W unable to fit specifications.

    Hi,
I am installinginternal disks on the quad mac pro and the transfer ratet in the mac are very slow!!!
the disks are: barracuda 7200.10 disks, 500 GB. Sta II 300, max ST3500630AS firmware 3.AAE . throughput:300mb.jumpred off to get the 300.
MAC tells that the QUAD MAC Pro equipment (2x2.66ghz dualcore intel xeon) comes with a 3.Gigabit specification/ 300MB/sec. (Intel ESB2 AHCI, speed: 3.0 Gigabit. AHCI version 1.10 supported)...
And the benchmarks of the disk ST3500630AS show maximum 80MB/sec and a minimin of 37.3MB/sec, average 63.1 MB/sec. (anandtech tests).
According to seagate.com the maximum sustained data transfer rate:78MB/s
but in the mac the reallity is different: I am getting a transfer rate of 22MB/sec!!!!! . with out any application running and only making copy of the files!!!!
that means that the mac is only providing only 1/3 of the expected transfer rate for the disks..
so, is there a way that the MAC Pro gets all the normal transfer rate for those disks???
Is the Quad MAC Pro hardware unable to get the maximum throughput of the disks???
It seems that the mac is unable to get also the average transfer rate of those disks.. how to correct it???
    thanks a lot
    Alberto
ps. just for fun: I am getting a faster transfer rate from an old power pc ,and old pc, and firewire 400 and old ide disks!!! (36MB/seg!!!)

    Yup.
BThe latest Mac Pro are better, so if you have a new or 2 month old unit, Seagate should work, though I think there should be later firmware.
Some would say those drives take the cake or woRSe.
    http://www.barefeats.com/hard91.html
    SEAGATE PUZZLES
+Firmware version 3.AEE or later solves the slow sustained large block write speed issue for a single 7200.10 inside the Mac Pro.+
+The remaining performance issue is slow small random read speeds for one, two, three or four drives. No matter how many drives you configure in RAID 0 sets, the average random read speed for combined block sizes from 64K to 1024K is less than 30MB/s (based on QuickBench 3 testing).+
+Until Seagate fixes this, we can't recommend the 7200.10 series as the ideal boot drive for the Mac Pro (or Power Mac).+

    things are hanging frequently
When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Apperture faster on old IMac than Mac Pro

OK so I've been slaving away for weeks in the studio using my 2.66 Quad core Mac Pro with 3GB RAM and putting up with slow, really slow performance from Aperture thinking that I really must upgrade my RAM.
Then tonight I just want to look at some family pics at home on my iMac with a measly 1.5GB RAM and I find it is lightning fast in comparison. Any suggestions? I have the Radeon 512 card in the Mac Pro and a 30" cinema display. This should be faster than the iMAc right?

The generation of previews is to allow sharing of images with ilife and other apps, the also allow drag'n'drop from aperture to the desktop. They can be switched-off universally or all on or on with a per-project basis (i have it this way).
The settings are at the top of the project pane (cog) and in the prefs (for their quality and ON for importing). I suspect if you check the task panel under window it will show its generating previews. Leave it until its finished it does take a long time to complete, but the MP should still be useable, albeit slower until its done. when i recently deleted all my previews which were set at a high quality level of 10, i regenerated them all at 6 and it took over 24 hours, but saved over 10% in disk space without detriment to occasional preview use in ilife. My library is 80% .cr2 raw, 100GB.

  • Can I install my hard drive from ppc g5 quad into a mac pro?

    heres my thinking.......
i have a quad 2.5 ppc g5 and i bought it with all the apps already loaded. fcp, c4d, cs4 etc. i dont have serials or discs for apps. i want to buy mac pro quad from ebay...can i install my ppc hd into the new mac pro?

The drive will work in a Mac Pro, but it won't be bootable. It might be possible to copy the applications, but they may not work. They may be PPC only versions that would have to run in slower emulation mode, if they work at all. They may not be compatible with the version of OSX on the Mac Pro. Applications with serial numbers often need new serial numbers if used on a different computer. You could use Migration Assistant (Utilities folder) to move your accounts and data, but it may have problems with older apps.
I bought it with all the apps already loaded. FCP, C4D, CS4 etc. I don't have serials or discs for apps.
Then you don't have legitimate copies of the apps. If the previous owner kept the discs and serial numbers, the applications should have been deleted before sale. You should buy current versions of the applications you need. They will work better on a Mac Pro than the older versions (if they would worj at all).

  • Slow performance Mac Pro

I've noticed recently my Mac Pro loads very slowly, i.e. final cut pro, photoshop, handbrakes, lightroom, etc. Even when clicking on Open, Save, Close, etc, it's not instantaneous as it was before. I've downloaded Onyx and use it to clean out the cache. Restarted the computer and it's back to its normal fast loading. But after using it for a couple of hours, it slows down again. And again, I need to clear out the cache with Onyx, restart before it returns to running normal for a few hours.
I am not sure what is wrong and how I can correct this so it stays permanently fast and not having to rely on Onyx every few hours?

Are you seeing any PageOuts in Activity Monitor? That is another indication you have way too little RAM.
You appear to have made the most important adjustment -- separating your User files off the System/Applications/Paging Drive.
How did you accumulate 240 GB of Applications? My Mac Pro uses less than 17 GB for System and Applications, including the page file. (Admittedly I do not have CS-anything or Final Cut Pro.)
When you edit, are you storing source and destination on the same drive? Doing that forces reads to compete with writes and causes endless re-positioning of the drive heads. Each seek costs you an additional 10 to 20 milliseconds ( 0.010 to 0.020 seconds) of time wasted, which can quickly add up. Editing from one drive to another is much faster.
When you edit, are you actually dipping into Scratch? Scratch is an "extender" that allows you to edit stuff that is way too big for your system, but s-l-o-w-l-y. Using it in any substantial amount is an indication you have too little RAM.

  • Mountain Lion Very Slow on Mac Pro 3,1 (2008 model)

The Mac Pro 3,1 is supposed to support Mountain Lion, but when I run it, the GPU (ATI Radeon HD 2600 that came with it) makes a constant, loud fan noise as if it is working hard, and all of the graphics lag badly. I've installed all of the updates. Is there some driver problem between the Radeon HD 2600 and Mountain Lion? People on MacRumors said that it works fine on a Mac Pro 3,1 except for one guy who said it was really slow. Snow Leopard runs great on my machine.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • After effects CS6 too slow on Mac Pro (simple tasks)

    Hi everyone,
I've been trying to find a solution here, but I don't know why my Mac Pro (2010 8 core, 6 RAM, ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB) is this slow even when I use the pen tool when applying a stroke to a text. Why could this be? Some setting that I have to change? It's kind of intermitent. Some times it works well (if I reboot) .But I can't work like this. Sometimes I have to wait even to click on File.
    Thanks a lot in advance

You'll have to get used to creating Ram Previews and using AE's interface in the right way. You should really go through the getting started materials on the home page and take a look at the FAQ. AE is a layer based pixel calculating beast that will do a lot more to a movie at 60 frames per second than Photoshop will do on to a still image. After Effects is essentially Photoshop for movies with a lot more options.
If you want to smoothly drag through the timeline and playback multiple cuts with simple transitions and two or three layers then use Premiere Pro. If you need to use 20 layers and 60 effects to create a stunning composite or motion graphics effect then you're stuck with rendering at just about any price point.

  • Writing to Encrypted Disk Image SLOW On Mac Pro

I have a slew of Previous Gen (2010/2012) Mac Pro 12-Core 2.66 desktops running 10.8.5 (12F45). When making a standard 128-bit Encrypted Disk Image, the write speed to that image is extremely slow. Disk image is on the same system internal drive as the source material. Also tried on Gigabit Ethernet share. 1GB file takes 20 minutes.
If I take the same disk image and run it on a 2012 Mac mini server 2.6 i7 running 10.8.5 (12F45), the write speed is fast; 1GB takes 1 minute. Same holds true for a MacBook Pro (non-Retina) 2.3 i7 running 10.8.5 (12F45).
Antivirus is disabled on all machines for testing purposes. Mac mini is actually a clone of the Mac Pro's system, so everything is the same, software-wise.
Is there something inherently wrong with these Xeon Mac Pros that they cannot write fast to encrypted disks? Any other variables I'm not thinking of?
    Thanks in advance.

The write speed to an encrypted image is around 5.65MB/s in comparison to 92MB/s on normal disk. I feel frustrated to see the remaining time to copy 800GB of data from internal HDD to the mounted encrypted volume takes around 1 day. An encrypted disk managed by Truecrypt on any PC will work much better than it.
    iMac (Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

  • Very Slow New Mac Pro

I just got my first Mac Pro. I upgraded to Yosemite. It took nearly 5 hours to download. I thought it would have been and internet problem. But then I noticed that almost everything is slow, I am cutting the cord with PC but I expect a difference!
Opening an app takes several seconds. I have seen my friends Macs and they have almost instant opening of apps and all. It seems awfully slow to me.
Also I noticed that RAM is constantly on 3.98 or so, and many times there is only a few MB available. Who is using all the mem?
    Thanks for any advice.
    JC

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Aperture very slow on mac pro 8 core

I have a very new mac pro that can't seem to run aperture at a usable speed at all. My 4 year old G5 was able to run it faster, using the same library. When I move between pictures, or even try and change rating, the whole computer comes to a halt and I can't do or click on anything. After about 10 - 30 seconds I can start working again. This is the same with just about any feature in aperture. I have checked the task list and it is empty. This is running with the library on the boot drive and on a secondary drive. The performance is the same. Any ideas??

Library size does matter, and Aperture doesn't handle big libraries well when it comes to speed. It shouldn't matter but it does.
My own library is around 65k images and growing rapidly. If I was to have all these images on one drive, or a RAID, and perform a search of an image with spotlight, I would get results in only a few seconds, with Aperture it's like pulling your hair out and is very painful to perform a search.
If I wanted to search my entire album I must be prepared to watch the spinning beach ball for quite a few minutes, and every click or keyboard type takes another few minutes. I don't know why this is, or why the finder runs rings around Aperture, even iView can perform a whole library search in a matter of seconds.
I think it is because Aperture is trying to show you all the thumbnails or present a graphical view of all the images when you choose library or all images. All I am doing is asking Aperture to consider all the data in all images before I perform my search, but Aperture wants to do everything.
I really hope that the engineers work on this issue for version 2, and also come up with a better captioning window than is currently in use. I use PhotoMechanic to caption everything before it even touched Aperture, which makes Apple's programme by post-event workflow rather than my live workflow. An IPTC window such as PhotoMechanic's would be very welcome. If anyone else agrees please add it to the feedback page.
Anyway, back to the performance. Certain operations, even with plenty of RAM and a good graphics card, can lead to almost snail like performance with large Aperture libraries. I doubt an Octo-Mac (as I like to call them), or even a 50-core Mac with 60Gb RAM and a 20GB video card would make any difference. The application needs updating in that respect.

  • Premiere Pro CC 2014 - Slow on Mac Pro 2014

    Hi everyone,
I'm having some troubles since I upgraded my Premiere Pro CC to 2014 version.
The software is totally slow, barely unusable, it's crashing really often..
Am I the only one ?
    Config : Mac Pro 2013 / 6 Core / D500 / 16Gb

Please report the exact version of Premiere as displayed in the About box. "CC" is not specific enough given that there are now 9 releases under that banner. Nor is "the most recent update of CC" as that could apply to CC7.2.2 or CC2014.1.
If you're on 2014.1, then another customer with no video in the monitors resolved it by disabling GPU acceleration (set Renderer to Software Only on File>Project Settings>General.) No Video in Source or Program monitors with PremierePro 2014 update. And at least two customers have reported that clearing the prefs resolved performance issues on Mac.

  • UPGRADE DUAL TO QUAD CORE PROCESSOR (MAC PRO 1,1)

I have a Mac Pro 1,1 Dual-Core Intel Xeon 3 GHz , I want to upgrade the processor
I can install Quad Core processor ?? Or What is the processor compatible with this Mac ?
    Please help

    Hi Hatter,
I have been thinking on the same lines here as Zoomayman, just upgraded the Graphic' s to the 5770 so I can use my New Mac Monitor. On your reply to 'Z' it would help if you added the link to said Thread , saves the ordinary folk like myself hours trying to find said thread.
Any chance of said link please

  • Slow booting Mac Pro

My Mac Pro recently has become extremely slow on bootup. Once booted, it seems to run speedily like a Mac Pro should, my issue is just on boot up.
The grey Apple logo screen and spinning wheel show for a LONG time, and my boot drive thrashes like crazy. I have tried repairing disk permissions, and also verified my boot disk by first boot the Tiger boot DVD, it did find some errors, and fix them. But the boot disk still is extremely slow.
Any idea of next steps to help this situation out? Defrag?

Have you tried booting from your Installation DVD and repairing the disk permissions and the disk?

  • 2008 Quad 3 Ghz Mac Pro freeze after startup

I'm writing this on my MacBook Pro since my tower is no longer functional. I'm not sure what to do with it but I'll do my best to describe what it's doing. It is a 2008 Mac Pro, with two dual core 3 Ghz Xenon processors, 10 GB Ram, 3.75 TB hard drive space, ATI Radeon 1900 XT video card.
Push power to boot up sometimes it boots up normally other times the fan just just excellerates to high and the tower does nothing, and I have to force a shut down. On the next boot up it always does the fan thing again resulting in a second force shut down, then a second attempt to boot back up same result, almost always on the third attempt it will boot up to the desktop. if that's not odd enough it gets weirder.
Whether it takes me three tries to get to the desktop or it goes there the first try it will run for a few min, then the screen gets blocky (like a pattern of squares or artifacts all over the screen and the system is now completely unresponsive except I can see the mouse moving, I've waited to see if it will come out of it, but it doesn't so I force a shut down.
At first I thought, maybe my hard drive is failing so I get the System restore OSX disk. It behaves the same way when booted up with the System disc. The more I think and look around I'm beginning to think the video card is going bad. This kind of behavior was intermittent at times but today I can't use it for more than a few min. I took the door off and after letting it set I booted again but again still same thing. the only place that I feel a lot of heat is from the video card especially around the vent near the ports. I've tried removing the card but it doesn't seem to want to come out. I've removed the bracket with the two screws It feels like it's coming out of the socket but something is holding it into the case and I don't want to force it.
So here are my questions, does this sound like it's a bad video card? And if so is there some trick to getting it out, even if it's just to look at it and perhaps clean any dust out of it in case it's getting clogged.
    Thanks,
    Mike

it would seem it's in the acceptable range, I'll have to look up Temperature monitor and see if I need to use a SMC Fan Control to up the default.
The inside was only moderately dusty which I went ahead and cleaned out, I make it a habit of cleaning the insides out from time to time. The only exception being the Radeon 1900 XT which after removing the fan and giving it a good shot of air and a large clump of dust coming out the other end (by the heatsink fins) makes me think that that is the likely culprit of my 1900XT's early demise. Cleaning out the card and putting it back in though made no difference, so I think the overheating damage is done. I have thought about giving the oven bake method a shot if the card is crap anyway there's nothing to lose. Also thought about checking the firmware to see if it needs updated.
4SNS is a sensor of some kind which I guess the "ICBC" refers to the specific sensor? A search of Mac Pro sensor ICBC came up with "ICBC Current, CPU-B core current" perhaps that will give me an idea what to look for in monitoring the heat. As long as it's not a fatal warning I'm happy, I was starting to freak out a little thinking the logic board was bad and the unit being out of warranty facing the reality of either taking it to a service center and paying an arm and a leg to fix or to just ebay the mac and use the money towards a new or newer MP. I can't really afford to dump close to a thousand bucks into a board replacement at an apple service center. I'm thankful I bought a laptop last year or I'd have no computer to work on. Hopefully once I get the Radeon 5770 sanity will be restored plus the 5770 is a better card than the 1900xt anyway. Mac Connection sure is taking it's sweet time processing the order though...
