Is Quicktime 7.3 safe?

After seeing a thread that warned everyone about problems with Quicktime 7.2 , I've been reluctant to upgrade. Now I see that 7.3 has been announced and wondered if this new version as addressed these issues? Namely: problems with FCP and HDV, exporting to Flash using third party software, etc.

The consensus tends to be: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I'm perfectly happy with 7.1.6 and it does everything it needs to do now. If there are issues with other third-party encoders, I'm sure the third-party developers will work something out with their next issue/version/upgrade and they'll be working with the latest version of QT.
So thanks for the advice!

  • I've updated to newest itunes and Quicktime--is it safe to update my ipod?

Before I do something I will have trouble undoing, I was wondering if most people are having success with the newest versions of itunes and Quicktime. Everything seems to be running fine on my computer--movies play, etc.--but I don't want to update my ipod until I'm reasonably sure things will work fine there as well.
Also, I was wondering how exactly to purchase the new Quicktime key that Software Update says I'll need. I went to the Quicktime site but was a little confused--do I actually need to purchase Quicktime Pro? Can you download the key or do you have to wait for the software to arrive in the mail? (If movies are playing fine in itunes, does that mean I don't need a new key?) Again, I don't want to update my ipod only to find out that I've screwed things up.
By the way, I have the 30G video ipod.
Thanks to anyone who can help me with this.

I have updated mine (a brand new Nano and a 60 GB iPod Photo) with no trouble whatsoever. I had some minor glitches with the iTunes 7.0 update, but since the 7.0.2 update all's right with the world.
I would go ahead and update your iPod now.

  • Videos will no longer play in iTunes on computer

I am running 32 bit Vista and iTunes 8.02 and quicktime 7.5.5. I just installed the digital version of Appoloosa and it either crashes iTunes or plays with a green screen. I tried my other digital copies I have watched before without a problem and they crash iTunes. I tried disabiling Direct 3D in Quicktime and even safe mode. The only thing I got was it playing in white. HELP!

Here is the log. Looks like its QT is crashing it. So, again, its either QT, or one of the Vista updates. I haven't tried to watch a movie on the computer in awhile so I have no idea what update in the past few months is causing the problem.

  • No System Startup after Update 10.4.10 - Help?

    Hi,
after updating to 10.4.10 Mac OS X was not completely startup. It was hanging at the end of the blue loading bar every time.
I was running the Hardware Test on the OS X Installation DVD and the harddrive testprogramm. Everything was ok. I could start the system in the "Safe Mode". I read that a new system installation could fix startup problems. So I reinstalled OS X. Everything was running OK. Then I updated to 10.4.10 again and I have the same Problem again!
I read about a quicktime component problem, so I reinstalled Quicktime in the "Safe Mode" like they were writing, but nothing helps.
After the Update to 10.4.9 my system seemed to be slower, but now it does not even startup. It always hangs at the end of the blue loading bar.
    My System:
    MacMini - 1,83 GHz (Intel)
    1 GB-RAM
    SuperDrive
    AirPort
    80 GB Harddrive
    Any ideas??
    Thanks for help.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!!
I could start the system in the "Safe Mode".
Well try a normal startup, that fails, then start up in Safe Mode and immediately use the Console application (in /Applications/Utilities) to look at your system.log. Go back to where it says "reboot by <user>" and look at the lines immediately before that. Post some of them here.
If it starts OK in safe mode, but not otherwise, then there may be a problem with one or more of the items listed in Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?.
Since you don't get as far as being able to log in, it is unlikely that Login Items are a problem. Equally it is not likely to be the font caches mentioned since they are user specific. I would be inclined to start with the fonts in /Library/Fonts, and then work backwards in the list.
See these User Tips for more about fonts:

  • M/S Visual C++ runtime error message when trying to start iTunes

I deleted the Yahoo toolbar from Internet Explorer via the add/remove programs function. Now whenever I try to start iTunes, I get a Windows error message stating
"Microsoft Visual C++ runtime library Runtime Error!
    Program: C:\Program Files\iTunes/iTunes.exe
This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the applications support team for more information."
I tried restarting the computer- then reinstalled the latest version of iTunes, all to no avail. Still unable to start iTunes, same Windows error message. Help!
    Thanks in advance-

Do you have any iTunes plug-ins installed in
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application
    Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes Plug-ins
Take them out of the folder and try iTunes again.
    Hi, MacMuse-
Thanks for replying. I checked, that folder is
blank/there are no plugins. Another thing- I
mentioned I had removed the Yahoo Toolbar- what I
didn't mention was that I installed the Google
toolbar in its place. I removed that and restarted
the computer once again, still no joy.
    Wes
I'm getting the same issue; no plugins installed.
I started having this problem about two weeks ago with iTunes 7.2, and tried each of:
    * Updating to 7.3: worked for several days, then back to same thing
    * Changing Quicktime settings to "safe mode" as described in the "unknown error" article
    * Uninstalling Google toolbar
    * Uninstalling Google desktop
    Still no luck.

The Apple Sppt guy did NOT Uninstall iCloud with my issue BUT After Uninstalling Apps and Manual Deletes in Program Files (x86) as instructed the iTunes Re-Install produced a pop-up at the end about Reggistry Settings for Import and CD Burning are Missing ... Re-Install iTunes. (saw another Thread on this Reg issue)
2nd call to Apple netted that Uninstalling Quicktime Fixed that Registry issue most every time.
IF you do all of this over you may try Uninstall of Quicktime to be safe and check if more Manual Deletes are requ'd after the QT Uninstall is run..

  • Viewing images on CRT, LCD and computer

Can somebody help me clarify how different a FCP edited video will look on the above devices?
My understanding is that if I was creating a video that was going to be played back on a CRT television, then I would have to adhere to the rules of 'title safe', however, if the video was intended to be played back in quicktime, then 'title safe' is not neccessary as the whole picture is shown. Can someone tell me if I am right in my thinking and why this is the case?
Also, does anyone know if I have to adhere to 'title safe' if the image is going to be shown on an LCD tv?
Any clarification will be greatly appreciated.
    Adam

And this is changing all the time with flat screens, etc.
Really comes from the idea that action and titles are 99.99% sure to be seen properly on the cr*ppiest television in your viewing area 9PAL, NTSC.)
I found the other day in my box of memorabilia a few frames of 35mm optical prep stock that showed what in the 70's was called TV Safe. If you compare that to today, you'd be amazed.

I don't know exactly what I did to cause this problem. Please someone help!!

  • Please help!!! first green screen, now "itunes has stopped working"

Hi, please, anyone - I need help
I have a dell laptop running windows Vista
about 2 days ago, all of a sudden itunes refused to play my TV shows (which I have a lot of, probabely about $500 worth!). At first it just displayed either a green screen, or a black screen, and then it came up with an error message saying "Itunes has stopped working"
So, I thought ha! I'll simply re-install the operating system. At first that did the job, but now its happening all over again! its the exact same thing
Could someone please offer me some advice, I have tried changing Quicktime to the safe mode - but to no avail, I just dont know what to do!
Cheers in advance for your help
P.S Do you have these problems with Mac's?

I too have this problem and posted the following elsewhere--still no help from anyone. Thankfully I only bought 1 tv show from them and it will be my last until something or someone gives.
Hope someone either can help or refer me to a past posting of someone else having this same problem.
Why am I seeing the color green instead of the tv show I purchased? What most likely is missing on a person's computer when someone sees a green screen? Sound is fine, but the picture is a solid green screen.
I have an S3 Savage Pro 32MB AGP Video component.
    Help! Thank you...oomgowah

  • Quick time will crash when opening movies

I am using MS Vista 32bit, with 2 Invida cards. I installed QuickTime 7 with out any errors, but when I try to open a movie QuickTime will immediately close with the lovely "QuickTime player has stopped working, windows will close the application and try to search for a solution" window (not exact text). I have changed the QuickTime display to Safe mode on the advanced tab in the QuickTime control panel, that will allow QuickTime to open but it will clock with a blank display and never open the movie. I tried installing QuickTime 6 and it will not crash, but will not show the movie either, it will just display the first frame. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Just like you have to take care of your car once in a while you have to do that with your computer too.
Repair permissions is a part of it. You have the application Disc Utility in the Utility folder. It can Repair permissions. Or get a maintenance app like the free Onyx.

  • Converting .avi to .mp4: No audio

I am trying to convert an avi to mp4 so I can play it on my ipod. I only plan on doing this 1 file so it makes no sense for me to purchase Quicktime Pro or VisualHub, so my options are iSquint and MPEG Streamclip.
After trying within iSquint, the conversion works but the quality of the mp4 file is almost unwatchable.
I then tried it in MPEG Streamclip but this is where my problem begins. No matter what I do I can't get audio on any output file. The avi file plays normally in Quicktime and VLC, but I've noticed that in the player in Streamclip there is no audio.
Even exporting to other output files gives no relief either.
I've looked at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1616285&tstart=0 that addresses a similar problem but don't see anything to help my specific situation.
    Some possible useful info:
    ~/Library/Quicktime contains -
    AppleIntermediateCodec.component
    AppleMPEG2Codec.component
    DivXDecoder.component
    DivXEncoder.component
    Flip4Mac WMV Advanced.component
    Flip4Mac WMV Export.component
    Flip4Mac WMV Import.component
(note the first 3 file have a white lego block as their icon, the second 3 have a white page as their icon.)
When playing the file in Quicktime the Quicktime Movie Inspector gives this info:
    NMP1.avi
    DivX
    Format: DivX 6.0, 608 x 246, Unknown MPEG Layer 3, Stereo, 44.100 kHz
    FPS: 23.98
    Data Rate: 708.03 kbits/s
    Normal Size: 608 x 246 pixels
    Current Size: 608 x 246 (Actual)
While the file is in the MPEG Streamclip player the Stream Info displays
    Bit Rate: 0.75 Mbps
    Video Tracks:
    DivX 5.0, 608 × 246, 23.976 fps, 634 kbps
    Audio Tracks:
MPEG Layer-3 Audio stereo, 44.1 kHz, 112 kbps
    Stream Files:
    NMP1.avi (790.21 MB)
Does anyone know what is causing this problem and/ or know how to fix it?
    Running 10.5.4 on Macbook 2.16GHz C2D 2GB
    Quicktime Player v7.5
    MPEG Streamclip v1.9.1
    VLC v0.8.6i
    thanks, b.
(ps I didn't know which section to put this thread under so went with Quicktime as a safe bet.)

    Thanks for replying guys.
I tried what you suggested Ricktoronto on a small test file and it worked!
You've made my day, been trying for a couple of days to get this to work.
Is it ok to delete those DivX files from my mac now? I have the DivX player still installed, that won't crash if I delete those files, will it?
    Many thanks, much appreciated.

  • ITunes 7.0.1 fast forwarding and skipping

I installed itunes 7.0.1 today, and ever since all my songs randomly skip and or fast forward through the entire song. The results seem random, sometimes one song will start slow, and randomly skip other times the same track will just play extremely fast through the whole song. I have never had this problem with any other version of itunes. I tried changing my quicktime audio to "safe - wav out" but that does not help.
I have a Pentium 4 with 2GB of DDR 3200 RAM and plently of system resources available. Has anybody else experienced this or know how to fix it, or is it just another 7.0.1 bug we have to wait out?
    Thanks!

well, at least it's not like the old days anymore man, when an SB Live actually did alot more than what an onboard soundcard can do for you. I myself am not a hardcore gamer or anything, just like to listen to my music when I'm on the PC. My surround sound, dolby, dts and all that jazz is on my home theatre. If I am just listening to my iTunes, I honestly don't notice a difference between onboard sound and my sb live, so heck worst case enable your onboard sound if you have it or play with some drivers, or get yourself a cheapo $20 sound card. With all the problems though, you'd think Apple must be working on an updated version. good luck
