Is random iMac screen flashing a cause for concern?

I am using a 24-inch iMac which is of the 'Early 2009' variety.
The flashing happens randomly but usually when I awaken it.  This behavior began about a month or so ago and is very random, somedays it occurs several times during the day and other days not at all.  If it is on its way out, I would like to purchase another before it quits.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

iMac screen flash black and white when returning to top sites or before sleep...any ideas why?

    Howdy OatsaMae,
It sounds like your screen is flashing unexpectedly on you for some reason. I would recommend this section from the following article to help you get that resolved, named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

  • Unknown PC displayed in my Finder. Cause for concern?

I have a closed wireless network (WEP password required) and I've seen an unknown PC show up in the "Shared" section of my Finder. Is this cause for concern? Would this indicate that my network has been hacked?

More than likely this person has not joined your wireless network. Read through my posts in the thread "Internet hacker".

  • Random Native screen flashing

Just purchased a new Macbook Pro in November 2008 (Aluminum) and have recently noticed a random screen flash on the native display. It happens at inexplicable times; 1) low CPU,Mem,Disk usage, low temp (under 130 degrees F), 2) High CPU/Mem usage and higher temps (134-140 degrees f). I run VMWare and it happens, I DON'T run VMWare and it happens. Its COMPLETELY random which makes it difficult to replicate when in front of a genius or anyone else. It will happen in groups of 2 or three flashes...then nothing for quite some time (just happened). I thought the 10.5.6 update would cure the issue, but it persists.
What makes this more bizarre is when I have an external monitor that runs at a higher res (1600 x 1280), the problem continues on my macbook, but not on the External monitor (dell).
I took it into the Apple store and they ran a full hardware diagnostic (took like 2 hours) with some sort of software or something, and came up with nothing and that my Macbook Pro hardware is fine. The Genius said it was a software problem...but, i disagree given that the "flash" doesn't happen on the external monitor- only on the native display. I'm fearful that this will become a bigger problem and leave me with no MacBook Pro when I need to work. I've searched and found more youtube videos showing this issue, than I've found any support related articles here or anywhere else for that matter.
So, I thought I'd put this one out there so someone can help. Come on Apple..i have spent almost 8k on your stuff and expect better quality and a much better response to problems. What's up?

  • IMac screen keeps waking up for no apparent reason

Here's a fun one. So we all know you can put your Mac screen to sleep by pressing controlshifteject on a Mac keyboard. This is what I usually do with my iMac as I tend to have it doing something at night (be it downloading, processing large files, ect.) but lately the screen only seems to want to sleep for about 10 minutes or so before it will turn right back on.
My old MacBook Pro used to do this but you could actually dim the screen right down to zero anyway so it wasn't that big of an issue. You can't do that with an iMac.
I've heard mention that it might be bluetooth related and I am using an Apple bluetooth keyboard and Magic Mouse but it seems to be doing it much more often of late. I thought it might be a battery issue but even with fresh batteries the issue continues.
    Anyone know what's going on?

Next time you want to put your iMac screen to sleep, try switching off the Magic Mouse, wait for the notification to come up on the screen telling you the Magic Mouse has been disconnected, wait for it to disappear then press the keyboard shortcut to put the screen to sleep. See if that helps and we'll go from there. If that doesn't help, can you just say wether the screen always turns back on the same time every time?
    Hope that helps
    David

  • Random Erratic Screen Flashing Behavior

Periodically my screen goes into the flashing crazy like mode and I can only reboot to get out of it… I have read at other sites a similar issue with the 27" IMAC having a flashing issue but did not talk about the 21" MAC.
Should I try to find something in the System Logs that might help to troubleshoot? What would I look for right after I reboot? Thanks IN advance

  • Random iMac shutdowns most definitely caused by overheating.

My iMac has been plagued by random shutdowns, but I've noticed that it usually happens on very hot days... so I noticed that the computer was getting abnormally hot on the top of the frame. The HDD temp was reaching almost 120f. I installed fan control and it hasn't crashed since. It seems like Apple had set the fan thresholds too low because it seemed like the fans never came on.
Kind of ridiculous that I have to do something like this myself, and it is not configured correctly out of the box.

120F = 48C which is not bad for the hard drive temp. Which iMac do you have exactly? Since your iMac is shutting down on you the damage has already been done. I would be persistent with Apple and make them fix the problem. Also download and install iStat Pro. Set it to Celsius and post up all of your temperatures. Have you tried running Apple Hardware Test?

  • Random Black Screen Flash Macbook Air and Apple LED display

So I have started to see an issue with the new Macbook Air and my Apple LED 24" display. Randomly only maybe 2-3 times a day the screen will go black and then quickly come right back, like a blink. Anyone else see this behavior? This does not happen with the internal built-in screen on the MBA. Feels like a driver or software issue to me.

    Hi Steve,
I have the same model you've mentioned. Although my issue is not the same, at times when I open my laptop up, I have a black screen, and have to manually power-down. I can tell the keys still work, as I use the brightness buttons and can tell the contrast is getting higher.
Also last night my keyboard/trackpad stopped working, however the power button did bring up the shutdown options but the trackpad still did not work.

  • Is this cause for concern? SUID file?

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

I just had the exact same ~warning~ after doing a permissions repair. I guess I wont worry about it.

  • I have a Thunderbolt iMac 27" with a Thunderbolt Display attached.  I would like to use the iMac and Thunderbolt display in Target Display Mode for my new Thunderbolt MacBook Pro.  So far, it seems I can only use the iMac screen itself.  How do I do this?

When I press the Command + F2, the iMac screen becomes a secondary for the MacBook Pro, and the Thunderbolt Display becomes the primary screen for the iMac.  I was hoping that both screens would become secondaries for the MacBook Pro.  Does anyone know how I should proceed?  I have tried to connect the Thunderbolt display directly to the MacBook Pro, and the iMac to the Thunderbolt Display via the separate Thunderbolt cable, but there was no difference.  And since the MacBook Pro only has the one Thunderbolt port, I'm not sure how to proceed.

Yes, eww, the language definitely states two thunderbolt displays, but I can understand the confusion and was siding with how they could make the mistake to think it would work like they want it to. My appologies for not being clear on that point, but I think you make it clear that the language in the ad says nothing about an imac.
Having said that all the language about TB would suggest that this would be possible. http://www.apple.com/thunderbolt/
    High performance on display.
Thunderbolt I/O technology provides native support for the Apple Thunderbolt Display and Mini DisplayPort displays. It also supports DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI, and VGA displays through the use of existing adapters. So you can connect your Apple LED Cinema Display or other display, along with multiple high-speed devices, all from a single port.

  • Best procedure for setting iMac screen for color correction

    Hi All
I know the iMac screen is not ideal for color correction, but I would like to know the best way to set the color space of the iMac screen to achieve the best possible result when color correcting.

  • Streaks in your iMac screen?

I have about a dozen different colored streaks running down my iMac screen.  What causes this and how can I get rid of them?

Probably a hardware failure, it may be the display itself or more likely the graphics card. You need to take the machine in for professional diagnosis to your local Apple Store or AASP.
On the off chance the machine is still covered by AppleCare (you failed to complete a profile se we have no idea what mac you have or the version of OS X it's running) any hardware repairs would be done at Apple's expense.

  • Screen flashing black constantly (HP Envy dv7)

Ever since about a month ago, my notebook has been going insane. The screen flashes completely black for about a second every three seconds or so, and doesn't stop. It does this ALL the time. I've updated my graphics card, the NVIDIA and intel part, even reset the whole computer. Can anyone help? This makes the notebook basically unusable.

    Hello @Ghstlghts
As T4M has mentioned your issue is hardware related.

  • IMac Screen and young kids

I would like to know whether the iMac screen is strong enough for young kids' fingers? They usually point and touch the screen.
    What are my options?

    Charles,
I think the iMac screen is quite able to handle this. I have two young kids, and they and their friends cannot seem to resist touching the screen. No damage thus far, only lots of fingerprints to clean up.
