Is rebooting the same thing as cold starting?

I am very, very new to the Mac.
(Most of my experience is with old, non-PC, non-Apple, obsolete computers.)
I have been trying to install Adobe Photo Shop Elements 6, and I am currently running Mac OS X 10.5.4 with 512 mb on an Intel Core Duo at 1.83 GHz.
During the installation process, I get a couple of Photo Shop Elements icons on the bottom toolbar of the desktop, and this appears to be, arguably, normal, but then I get a message that I ought to call Technical Support. About what, Lord knows.
Now, I know that if I let the Mac mini go to "sleep" - after about 30 minutes of continuous inactivity - I can turn off the power strip to the entire computer, and the Mac mini will be completely down. That little LED that looks like it is snoozing, is completely out.
It won't wake up at that point. Not by tapping the keyboard, nor by clicking the mouse.
There appears to be a power button just above the power cord. By pressing this is, you can start the Mac mini back up again.
I assume that it is now doing what we used to call "coldstarting" - but the user's manual doesn't really explain what is being achieved by doing it this way. I don't know if the Mac mini has "nonvolatile" memory, but I'll assume that there is bound to be SOME memory that is nonvolatile, and which does not fade away when you cause the Mac mini to undergo a coldstart. Can anybody comment on this?

Even after turning the power back on, with hardly more than a tenth of a second, it won't wake up, not by tapping ther keyboard, or by clicking the mouse.

So far as I can tell, my Mac mini does not have a battery inside it. (Maybe I should sink some money into an uninterruptible power supply?) Ever had your house 'blink' for a tenth of a second (or less), and your Mac was in sleep mode? Sure enough, the Mac mini goes out, as it is not that tolerant of a sudden lapse in power. It seems that a fraction of a second is all it takes for a Mac mini to go from 'Asleep' to 'Off.' But your experience may be different from mine.
Macs use an electronic power switch, so if you turn off the power strip, turning it back on will not in and of itself turn the Mac back on. You do indeed have to press the power button on the back of the system.
There you go, it is just as I said.
This is by design and is common to current and recent computers; most have an electronic button that command circuitry rather than being a direct make/break of the power and so require the button to be pressed to start the system.
Well, when the Mac is sleeping, it stands to reason that the harddrive inside the Mac mini has been isolated, the motor is not spinning, and the R/W head (or whatever gizmo it is) has been taken to a safe location. A sudden power surge shouldn't suddenly send a charge to the R/W head or laser, or whatever it is that does the reading of the medium inside the harddrive. If the Mac was sleeping, but I noticed a whirring going on, I sure wouldn't reach for the power strip switch, to turn it off. But that's just me.
If you want to be able to just press a key on the keyboard or move the mouse to bring the computer back into operation, do not use the Shut Down command and do not turn off the power strip. Either let the computer go to sleep on it's own (the time it takes can be set in the Energy Saver system preference) or choose the Sleep command, also under the Apple menu.
Okay.
"Coldstart" usually means starting up a computer from a completely power-down state, as would be the case if you Shut Down your Mac and/or turn off the power strip.
I don't know if the Mac mini has "nonvolatile" memory, but I'll assume that there is bound to be SOME memory that is nonvolatile, and which does not fade away when you cause the Mac mini to undergo a coldstart.
Anything stored on your computer's hard drive will (barring a malfunction of some sort) remain after the power is shut off. There is also some nonvolatile memory that stores the computers power-up information, but in most cases you don't need to concern yourself with that.
Okay.
As to the question you raised in the subject header, "rebooting" usually means restarting the operating system without shutting off power to the computer. This in a Mac is done via the "Restart" command, again under the Apple menu. You'll see this sometimes referred to as a "warm start" as contrasted with a "cold start" where the power to the system is turned off (either via the computer's own power supply or externally as by a power strip).

Has anybody else beside me had a hard time installing Adobe Photo Shop Elements 6 on a Mac mini running OS X 10.5.4? There seems to be several months intervening between the release of Elements 6, and OS X 10.5.4.

When I try and open Microsoft Word 2011 documents on my  IMAC they start opening one after another at a rapid speed and I can't stop it. I reboot and same thing happens. The documents open in rapid succession on their own and don't stop until I force close or after maybe 100 or more open I start getting the following message for each document attemting to open "This document could not be registered. It will not be possible to create links from other documents to this document" and then in paretheses the name of the document. After I click okay another trys to open. Any suggestions?

If you had multiple documents open and quit the app without closing all of the docs first, it will open them again when you launch the app. Open Word, and then close all the documents, you may be asked to save the document, if the document was already saved but you made changes to it before you quit the app, you may need to save the changes first, shorcut ( command and s keys). After you close all of the documents then quit the app and restart the computer. See if this works.

I have an iMac 5.1 with Mac OSX 10.6.8 and 2 GB memory and an L2 cache of 4 GB.   lately I have been receiving error messages of " start up disk almost full; please delete files." is the start up disk the same thing as the hard drive?  I opened the hard drive and from the column on the left of the menu I've selected "search for" and under that " all images" then "all documents"  I've deleted a few files from each. Are documents and images that I have deleted from here also deleted from the folders on my desktop?

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Delete any other mail in your Junk folders. Also, look through your Sent Mail to see if there is anything that can be deleted.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

I have an MacBook Pro 10.6, using disk utility I tried to verify my disk, but it came up with the message, please use your start up disk, I tried this, starting the computer up and pressing C, but it ejected the disk, the same thing happened while I running the computer. Is the hard drive damaged as laptop doesn't seem to recognize the start up disk ? If so, I presume I will have to put in a new one.
There haven't been any problems with the computer, apart from a sticky curser,I have run a permissions programme from disk utility, there were a lot of different ones, but it seem to be able to fix them.
    Any comments or ideas ?
    Thank you in anticipation.

First backup your users files off the machine to a external storage drive (not TimeMachine!)
    Most commonly used backup methods
Next to startup from the disk, have it inserted, hold c or option/alt (wired or built in keyboard) and then boot the computer and or select the disk when it appears and click the arrow.
Disk Utility is under the Utilities menu on the second screen.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
If you used the wrong 10.6 disk, it will spit it out or have issues, use the one that came with that machine or if it's defective, call Apple for a new one.

So, I have the same thing playing with a delay... What is happening and how to fix it? Is there any other way to play theese kinds of files without using Flip4Mac WMV?

Use Flash Media Server to stream the files.......set up a timer and have all three of them play at once....and have a button switch the streams depending upon which stream you want to play.....and wallah......
you can also capture the stream.time from the video playing and resume from that point on the other videos as well....havent done this theoretically so I dont know how smooth the transistion between streams will be....but it can be done....
plus u may have to use double buffering techniques to make sure it starts up right away......

Very disappointed in my LG G2. My screen freezes all the time especially when texting. This started after the update. My husband's phone is doing the same thing. We have done a hard reset, deleted pics and videos to clean up the phone but nothing helps. Any suggestions? Our phones are new.

Lots of Frustration.  In some cases the LGG2 is rendered useless even as a phone.
    Here is what I did.
    Got replacement Phone.
Same problems but I shut down all apps that I purchased even though they worked before KitKat.
Found that If I have both WiFi and LTE Data on at the same time battery chewing stops. Do Not know why.
Then I got 2 CM free utilities.  The Clean and Wash utilities. Run them and find the culprits grinding CPU
cycles and running down the battery.  Number One is the Verizon Voice Mail service constantly turning on and off
and retrieving data not there.  Turn of the extra Voice mail and use the old access with the *6.  Unless you have
100 messages a day for business your hosed until this KitKat issue is fixed. Get the CM battery utility.
YOU can see the battery suckers and shut them down when not using automatically.
Start putting back one application at a time you used often and see it they work and if the utilities will tune them
down if they cause problems.  The LG will get better but with some limitations.
LG and Verizon have a problem with what was a great phone.turned bad overnight.

when i active my mac pro all i get is a white screen and  it loading and when it fully load its turn off , and it keep on doing the same thing for hours

    Hi Shahenaz,
It's a little difficult to understand exactly what's going on with your mac based on the description you gave. Is there anything else you could add? Is it stuck in a reboot loop? Or is it just showing a white screen forever?
I had pretty much the same problem a few days ago, and was worried my mac was screwed permanently, but I got it fixed up no problem!
Follow these steps to try and troubleshoot/fix the problem.
    1. Boot into OSX Recovery Mode
First, turn off your Mac. If it isn't responding, or is stuck in a reboot loop, just hold down the power button until it turns off, and you hear the fans stop. Then boot it while holding the Command and R keys. If it successfully boots into OSX Recovery Mode, continue with this step. If not, skip to step two. (My Mac couldn't successfully boot into the recovery mode, so I had to go to step 2)
Select "Disk Utility" from the list of options, and find your built in hard drive from the list on the left. Usually there are two listings/names for your drive. The first should be something like "500GB longchainoflettersnumbers Media". Then the one below will be a little easier on the eyes, named Macintosh HD, if you haven't changed its name. That's the one you want, click it.
Now go to the "First Aid" tab. Click on the "Verify Disk" button in the bottom right corner, and let it do its thing. Once that's done, hit repair disk, also in the bottom right corner. If your disk is corrupted, you may need to run the repair process several times, before it comes up completely clean.
Once this is done, select Shut Down from the Apple menu and, once your Mac is completely off, turn it back on like normal. If it works, great. If not, proceed to step two.
    2. SafeBoot
Sometimes, when a mac is acting up and doesn't want to start, all it takes is a safe boot, followed by a regular restart. Or maybe you recently installed a program that either has malicious or errored coding that's causing your troubles. This is where Safe Boot comes in.
Turn off your mac, and reboot it while holding Shift. (If you want to see the process that's going on in the background, boot while holding Shift, Command, and V. This will enter something called Verbose Mode).
If it boots successfully into Safe Mode, great. If you believe that there's a particular program that you recently downloaded that might be causing your trouble, now's the time to delete it. If not, just reboot normally and see if it works! If it doesn't, or if your Mac didn't even Safe Boot like mine, proceed to step 3.
    3. Fsck!
For this step, you're going to be booting your mac into Single User Mode. I'm not going to go into details as to what this step does, but it works for some people. Here are the steps.
Turn off your mac, and reboot it while holding Command and S. The screen should go black, and you'll see some white text run across the screen, wait a few seconds, until you see the command prompt. Now type
    fsck -fy
and hit the Enter key. This will run a series of system checks, which could take a few minutes. Be patient on this part. Once it's done, it will show one of two messages:
    1. "The volume (your Mac) appears to be OK
    or
    2. "File System Was Modified"
If you got message 1, type reboot and press Return. Hopefully your computer works after this - if not, proceed to step 4.
If you got message 2, run the same command again until you get message 1. If it doesn't seem to be working, turn off your system and proceed to step 4.
If you couldn't even boot into Single User Mode in the first place (like me), go to step 4 anyways.
    Step 4: Reset the NVRAM
The NVRAM is another kind of RAM that stores data like the computer volume you had set before you turned it off, or the screen brightness, resolution etc. This memory is saved, unlike with regular RAM. Resetting it isn't harmful to your system, it will just put your screen brightness, volume, etc. to defaults.
Turn off your Mac, and reboot while holding Command, Option, P, and R, and continue holding them down until you hear the computer restart again.
I can't really explain why to do this step, I just know it works for some people, and seems to be what unbricked my MacBook Pro. If none of these steps, fixed your Mac, well the situation is looking pretty grim. Try setting up a meeting with a Mac Genius at your local Apple store. However, I know that many other people with these symptoms ended up having a logic board failure. Apple can swap out your logic board for a new one, but the price is pretty hefty, somewhere around $300 I believe.
Well I wish you luck, I hope this helped you!
