Is Retrospect Necessary if have Backup 3?
I am finally getting serious about backing up and forming a consistent backup plan for my computer. I think I have Backup 3 setup right for my home folder to be backed up on iDisk but I haven't tested it to be sure yet.
My next plan is to back up my data to at least one external hard drive and or DVD's at least once a month. I also have a ton of media files that I will need to store seperetatly and backup as my powerbook does not have the room for all that media. Is backup 3 good enough to organize a plan for this or should I take a look at retrospect? thanks for your help.
Hi, 10smom
1. You wrote: "75 gb capacity on mac. 100 gb external hd. Plan on adding another external hardrive as 2nd backup. How large should i get if want to use part for media data storage as well? "That all depends on (a) just how much "media storage" capacity you want, and (b) what types of backups you'll be creating on the second hard drive.
If you read my previously-cited"Backup and Recovery" FAQ, there are some guidelines therein on sizing / setting up a FireWire drive for backup and additional uses.
You could also go on the assumption of 75 GB + whatever media storage space you think you will want. Drives in the 250 GB range are getting pretty cheap these days...I always recommend buying more than you think you need.
2. The other question you have to ask yourself is the following: what is your plan to backup the data on the space used as "media storage"? If all the "media" being stored is also on your Mac, then a full backup of your Mac's (presumably single) hard drive will back up the "media," by which I presume you mean things like photos, movies, and the like.
If you plan on archiving "media" from your Mac to the "media storage" space, i.e. moving — not copying — it from your Mac to the media storage space on the new FireWire drive, then you'll want to backup the media storage space or risk losing "the media" stored therein.
Good luck!

i am currently using iphone 5 and i want to upgrade my phone to ios7 i want to know if it is necessary to keep backup of contacts?
As with every computing device, a backup is your ONLY insurance should anything ever go wrong with your device.
Without a backup, if something does happen to go awry, you will loose whatever you have not backed up.
So my response is, of course you need a backup. You always need a backup, no matter what. -

I have two iphone , 4 and 5s
I have only one apple id
I upgeraded 5s to ios 8 but cleared all contacts of iphone 4 and
I have backup on icloud for 4 and 5s but I can’t recovery contacts for iphone 4
After restore with backup on icloud , A moment seen iphone 4 contacts and contacts 5S immediately replaced!
Pleas help me
TanksYou have to follow the process outlined here to recover contacts from an iCloud backup: Recovering deleted iCloud contacts from an iCloud backup.. Otherwise, as you have noticed, the recovered contacts are overwritten when your device reconnects to iCloud.

I've been using numbers for iPad and I accidentally deleted a column. And the auto-save feature saved that and now I can't undo it. Does iCloud storage have backups of saved files from like 10 minutes ago? I have numbers synced to iCloud.
I tried to undo it but the app crashed.
I am hoping there's like a previously saved version of my file in iCloud somewhere.No, iOS does not do short term incremental back ups to iCloud such as you get with Time Capsule.It backs up when you do soo manually, or if set properly, when the device is plugged in and connected to WiFi. It will not have saved your changes as of 10 minutes prior.

BIf i have AT&T as my services is it necessary to have iTunes installed on my pc and or laptop to tether with USB or wirelessly...??
Well, in order to check, you'd need to tell us exactly what those plug ins are and/or provide a link to them. Most streaming or playing of the channels you mentioned do require "help" in the form of a plug in; some of those work great, others only haphazardly, and some not at all/may cause a problem.
FWIW, whatever site you visit online, knows exactly what equipment you are on simply because you went there. So, they should not be demanding/offering you a plug in that isn't meant for your platform (which, by the way, is not iOS, but Mac OS 10.9.5 - iOS is for iPads, iPhones, etc). -

I already have the Tech Tool Deluxe that came with Applecare & I also use the Apple Hardware test via the Applications Disc. Would I get anything more from using Drive Genius to test my Macbook? Just curious, don't know if I should spend $100 when I already have some tools at my disposal.

Is it necessary to have pages on mac to have it on iPad?
Hello people! I am thinking of getting pages for iPad and I was wondering if it is necessary to have pages on mac to have it on iPad, because I don't own a mac or a computer with pages on it... Any help.
Just typed a long message here and when trying to post it, got an error message and it didn't post.
I upgraded today to iOS 6 on my iPad 3 and iPhone 4S. I was excited with the possibility of syncing documents between my 2011 MBP and my iPad and iPhone. I've already upgraded to Mountan Lion 10.8.1.
I purchased Pages and Numbers for my MBP today and was very pleased with the way Pages works and how well it synced between the devices. I moved a couple of Word docs to Pages and was pleased with the way it went across. Only a very few problems, fonts, title center, etc. Nothing serious and easy to fix. It syncs back and forth between the MBP and iPad just fine.
Not so with Numbers. I first tried moving a simple spreadsheet from Excel (Office 11 on the MBP) to the iPad. Went through the tutorial and found it workable, but most difficult to use. So, I moved the spreadsheet to Numbers on the MBP, expecting it to be easy to use, like Pages was. Not so. I had three identical tables in the spreadsheet with eight rows and twelve columns to track monthly data over a years time. Only function used was a simple average. When the spreadsheet arrived in Numbers (moving it first through Dropbox and then to Numbers) the header was gone (simple title) and the function was gone (replaced with a number). So, it should have been easy to replace the header and select the average function, get it working on one row and then copy and paste it to the rest of the rows and columns. It was murder trying to get it to work. The controls were difficult to use, kept locking up and so I had to redo or delete and start again. When it finally worked (just a simple average), it was difficult to copy and paste to the other rows and columns.
There is no way to insert a page break. If you have two pages, you can only insert and delete rows until the tables are on the correct pages. It was difficult to change the font sizes. Difficult to change the cell spacing. No margin contol (very crude was to set them in the "inspector".
No way to not print grid lines. Found some suggestions in this forum, but they didn't work. It still printed the grid lines (although faintly).
But the worst thing was that it doesn't sync between the MBP and iPad3 without changing the formatting. In fact, when you save the spreadsheet on the MBP and then go to the iPad3 to open it in Numbers, you get a warning that the formatting will change and that you should open a copy if you want to sync it back to the MBP.
I spent several hours working on this. Finally got a usable spreadsheet. It all for naugt, as it won't sync without changing the formatting.
I've been using spreadsheets for several decades, mostly with many versions of Excel, Lotus, Open Office, Word Perfects spreadsheet (can't remember the name). I've designed some pretty exotic spreadsheets and use them almost daily (in Excel). This is the worst spreadsheet program I've ever tried to use. I won't be able to use it to sync between the MBP and iPad3. I'm sticking with Excel and Dropbox and can only look at the spreadsheet in the iPad3. I don't feel as bad about the wasted $40 for the two copies of Numbers as I do for the hours of wasted time trying to make it work.
It sure isn't as good an app as is Pages. I can use Pages and it works! -

Is it necessary to have a light black installed if not printing photos on a 7525 phitosmart
Is it necessary to have a light black cartridge installed if you are not printing photos? Keep getting low ink message and it is the only one showing low.
Hello calcowgirl,
Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you would like to do some printing without replacing the Light Black ink Cartridge.
This printer will need to have all the ink installed to function. The way the printer is designed is that it will take ink from the fuller cartridges to compensate and to complete print jobs.
Here is a document that explains Ink Usage in Inkjet Printers.
Thanks for your time.

I have installed ios7 on my iPad 4. After installation it asked me a pass code which I have never set. After multiple attempts it is disabled. I don't have backup on my iCloud or iTunes. Is there anyone who can help to enable it or to reverse iPad to ios6. I asked Apple store & tech said to format it but I will lose all the data..!
Thanks for that. Much more constructive than the last comment. It's only the restriction code I can't recall, not the access passcode. So I can currently access the device, just not age restricted content. Does that's make a difference? I also wondered if anyone knew how many attempts you get to try to get it right. Now tried 21 times and so far nothing bad has happened but I am concerned I'll eventually be completely locked out of the device. That doesn't seem in the spirit of things though. Surely it's foreseeable that a child could repeatedly try to guess the code so I can't see that it would be right to lock the device down completely in that circumstance, particularly if the access code is being typed in correctly every time.
Thanks -
My computer was totally destroyed & I do not have backup or external hard drive with my saved iTunes library from it. That was the only computer authorized to play library. I do not have an iPod or iPhone with any of that library (which has over $2K in music purchases & over 5K in songs I ripped). Will I be able to access my iTunes library when I purchase a new computer?
You should be able to access your past iTunes purchases. You'll need to re-rip your CDs See: HT2519 - Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.

RMAN-05556: not all datafiles have backups that can be recovered to SCN
Oracle 11.2.0.2 SE-One
Oracle Linux 5.6 x86-64
Weekly refresh of a test db from prod, using rman DUPLICATE DATABASE, failed with “RMAN-05556: not all datafiles have backups that can be recovered to SCN”
Background Summary:
Weekly inc 0 backup of production starts on Sunday at 0100, normally completes around 1050. Includes backups of archivelogs
Another backup of just archivelogs runs on Sunday at 1200, normally completes NLT 1201.
On the test server, the refresh job starts on Sunday at 1325. In the past this script used a set until time \"to_date('`date +%Y-%m-%d` 11:55:00','YYYY-MM-DD hh24:mi:ss')\"; -- hard-coded for ‘today at 11:55’.
For a variety of reasons I decided to replace this semi-hard coding of the UNTIL with a value determined by querying the rman catalog, getting the completion time of the inc 0 backup. This tested out just fine in my vbox lab, even when I deliberately drove some updates and log switches during the period the backup was running. But the first time to go live I got the above reported error.
Details:
The key part of the inc 0 backup is this (run from a shell script)
export BACKUP_LOC=/u01/backup/dbprod
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target=/ catalog rman/***@rmcat<<EOF
configure backup optimization on;
configure default device type to disk;
configure retention policy to recovery window of 2 days;
crosscheck backup;
crosscheck archivelog all;
delete noprompt force obsolete;
delete noprompt force expired backup;
delete noprompt force expired archivelog all;
configure controlfile autobackup on;
configure controlfile autobackup format for device type disk to '$BACKUP_LOC/%d_%F_ctl.backup';
CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT '$BACKUP_LOC/%U.rman' MAXPIECESIZE 4096 M;
sql "alter system archive log current";
show all;
backup as compressed backupset archivelog all delete all input format "$BACKUP_LOC/%U.alog";
backup as compressed backupset incremental level 0 database tag tag_dbprod;
sql "alter system archive log current";
backup as compressed backupset archivelog all delete all input format "$BACKUP_LOC/%U.alog";
list recoverable backup;
EOF
The archivelog-only backup (runs at noon) looks like this:
export BACKUP_LOC=/u01/backup/dbprod
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target=/ catalog rman/***@rmcat<<EOF
configure backup optimization on;
configure default device type to disk;
configure retention policy to recovery window of 2 days;
crosscheck backup;
crosscheck archivelog all;
delete noprompt force obsolete;
delete noprompt force expired backup;
delete noprompt force expired archivelog all;
configure controlfile autobackup on;
configure controlfile autobackup format for device type disk to '$BACKUP_LOC/%d_%F_ctl.backup';
CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT '$BACKUP_LOC/%U.rman' MAXPIECESIZE 4096 M;
sql "alter system archive log current";
show all;
backup as compressed backupset archivelog all delete all input format "$BACKUP_LOC/%U.alog";
list recoverable backup;
EOF
And the original refresh looked like this:
>> a step to ftp the backups from the prod server to the test server, and some other housekeeping <<, then
cd /backup/dbtest
echo "connect catalog rman/***@rmcat" > /backup/dbtest/dbtest_refresh.rman
echo "connect target sys/*******@dbprod" >> /backup/dbtest/dbtest_refresh.rman
echo "connect auxiliary /" >> /backup/dbtest/dbtest_refresh.rman
echo "run {" >> /backup/dbtest/dbtest_refresh.rman
echo "set until time \"to_date('`date +%Y-%m-%d` 11:55:00','YYYY-MM-DD hh24:mi:ss')\";" >> /backup/dbtest/dbtest_refresh.rman
echo "duplicate target database to DBTEST;" >> /backup/dbtest/dbtest_refresh.rman
echo "}" >> /backup/dbtest/dbtest_refresh.rman
So, my mod to the refresh was
bkup_point=`sqlplus -s rman/***@rmcat <<EOF1
set echo off verify off feedback off head off pages 0 trimsp on
select to_char(max(completion_time),'yyyy-mm-dd hh24:mi:ss')
from rc_backup_set_details
where db_name='DBPROD'
and backup_type='D'
and incremental_level=0
exit
EOF1`
cd /backup/dbtest
echo "connect catalog rman/***@rmcat" > /backup/dbtest/dbtest_refresh.rman
echo "connect target sys/*******@dbprod" >> /backup/dbtest/dbtest_refresh.rman
echo "connect auxiliary /" >> /backup/dbtest/dbtest_refresh.rman
echo "run {" >> /backup/dbtest/dbtest_refresh.rman
echo "set until time \"to_date('${bkup_point}','YYYY-MM-DD hh24:mi:ss')\";" >> /backup/dbtest/dbtest_refresh.rman
echo "duplicate target database to DBTEST;" >> /backup/dbtest/dbtest_refresh.rman
echo "}" >> /backup/dbtest/dbtest_refresh.rman
Now the fun begins.
First, an echo in the refresh script confirmed the ‘bkup_point’:
=======================================================
We will restore to 2013-08-25 10:41:38
=======================================================
Internally, rman reset the ‘until’ as follows:
executing command: SET until clause
Starting Duplicate Db at 25-Aug-2013 15:35:44
allocated channel: ORA_AUX_DISK_1
channel ORA_AUX_DISK_1: SID=162 device type=DISK
contents of Memory Script:
set until scn 45633141350;
Examining the result of LIST BACKUP (the last step of all of my rman scripts) the full backup shows this:

Continuing with the backup list, the second archivelog backup in the script generated six backupsets. The fifth set showed:

Notice the availability of the archivelogs including the referenced scn.
Investigation of the ftp portion of the refresh script confirmed that all backup pieces were copied from the prod server.
So what am I overlooking? Having reverted back to the original script to get the refresh completed,HemantKChitale wrote:
So, technically, you only need the database and archivelogs backed up by the database script and not the noon run of the archivelog backup.
backup as compressed backupset archivelog all delete all input format "$BACKUP_LOC/%U.alog";
backup as compressed backupset incremental level 0 database tag tag_dbprod;
sql "alter system archive log current";
backup as compressed backupset archivelog all delete all input format "$BACKUP_LOC/%U.alog";
Yet, why does backupset 5 of the noon archivelog backup show archivelogs from 10:30 to 10:40 if they had been deleted by the database backup script which has a delete input ? It is as if the database backup script did NOT delete the archivelogs and the noon run was the one to backup the archivelogs (again ?)
No, that is from the morning full backup. Note the 'Completion Time" of 25-Aug-2013 10:54:53
However, the error message seems to point to a datafile. Why would reverting the recovery point to 11:55 make a difference, I wonder.
As do I.
Also puzzling to me are the times associated with the completion of the backups. I don't recall ever having to scrutinize a backup listing this closely so I'm sure it's just a matter of filling in some gaps in my understanding, but I noticed this.
