Is running CrossOver and Parallels on the same computer a bad idea?

I know one could ask, why do you need both? Well I already had Parallels on my MacBook and I like to support CrossOver, so I bought it for the iMac and I have been running MS Office 2000 on it.
Now I'm beginning to think I might want to switch my Parallels (XP Pro) over to my iMac, and I tried installing Parallels on my iMac but it seems to not run right. I put my XP Pro disk in to install and Parallels gets stuck in a Dos-like mode where all I see is the black startup screen with a "Boot from CD Drive" message and nothing happens at all from the XP CD. And also, it won't let me quit the virtual machine; I have to manually shut off the iMac, which I'm sure is not a good idea.
So I'm wondering if having CrossOver on my computer is causing the problem.

The Parallels Boot Camp icon is the one you would use to create a virtual machine for Windows that has already been installed in Boot Camp. Also, when you create a virtual machine, if Windows is already installed in Boot Camp, Parallels will name the virtual machine "My Boot Camp" by default.
Boot Camp is not included with OS X, you have to download it from the Apple website. There are two versions, one for Windows XP and one for Windows Vista, so make sure you download the correct one.
You won't be able to use your Parallels for Windows license key to activate the Mac version, you'll have to buy a separate key for it. You can get a 15-day trial key if you've never used it before, so that will let you try it first before you decide if you want to buy it.

You will see from the hardware spec that the latest version of FCP X requires Mavericks.
The Mavericks spec shows you can upgrade to Mavericks on your Mac Pro.
Ensure you have a bucket full of RAM installed.

Run 3 and 4 on the same computer??

Can I have Captivate 3 AND Captivate 4 on the same computer?? I May be getting a couple of jobs where I am doing projects in 3 and projects in 4. Is this possible??

Can I run Tiger and Leopard on the same computer

Hi folks.
I've been meaning to install Leopard for ages but have never got round to it (I bought the retail box when it first came out). I have upgraded my RAM to 2GB and my hard drive to 320GB with no problems.
My upgraded hard drive has been partitioned into 2 equal parts of 160GB. These appear on desktop as Mackintosh HD1 and HD2. HD1 is the disk with all my files, music, OS etc and HD2 is empty
I have 2 bootable clones of my present system - one is on a 160GB external and the other is the original 80GB HD that I replaced.
My question is this - can I install Leopard on to my 160GB external HD, then clone it on to the empty HD2. If I do this would I be able to run both Tiger and Leopard on the same Macbook?
Is there any problems with this plan? Would I be able to transfer between the 2 OS and how do I install Leopard on the external drive. Is it just a case of inserting the Leopard DVD and choose the external drive as the target?

Leopard is backwardly compatible with older Macs, just make sure yours fulfills the minimum system requirements, both use the same filesystem format, so each can see the other. You can't run both at the same time, unless you purchase the server version of Leopard and run it virtualized. 99.9% of Firewire external HD's are bootable, some USB's are bootable but have to test first. You can choose which system to boot from by pressing the Option key at boot time, before the chime. Just make sure the external HDD is plugged in and turned on if that's where you want to boot from.
When I migrated my PBG4 from Panther to Tiger, got an external FW HDD, cloned Panther onto it, upgraded using Archive and Install, cleaned up, customized and tested it. When I was satisfied all was ok, cloned the original Panther onto another partition of the external HDD, wiped and tested for failure the internal HDD, then cloned the known good and tested Tiger into it. Only thing that died along the way was my old and ancient Photoshop v2.x, that refused to run on Tiger.

Running Leopard and Tiger at the same time VMWare fusion/Parallels?

I was wondering, is it possible to run Tiger and Leopard at the same time? Some older applications won't run properly in Leopard. The iMac came both with Tiger and Leopard (last November). It has been described elsewhere that one can install Tiger and Leopard on separate partitions and switch by rebooting. But it would be nice if one could run Tiger in Leopard like one can run Windows/Unix using VMWare Fusion or Parallels. Is that feasible?

I agree with you that virtualizing Mac OS X would be great. I'm an Apple technician and it would really help with my work. But Apple's EULA does not permit the use of OS X in a VM. They changed OS X Server's EULA recently to permit it, but not the "client version".
So your Mac can virtualize nearly any OS out there, but not OS X. And I believe (not sure) that a VM of OS X Server will only run on OS X Server.

Can Bootcamp and Parallels share the same Windows applications and data?

I'm looking at getting an Intel iMac which will let me throw away my old PC - Yeah!
I will have a couple of Win apps that I will need to hang on to (Quicken - Quicken for Mac is horrible, but that's another tghread). Anyway, can Bootcamp and Parallels share the same Windows applications and data?
My thought would be to allow my wife to access Quicken from Parallels and not have to reboot. She will only need lightweight access and the overhead of running virtualization wouldn't impact her. I, on the other hand, would want to occasionally boot natively into Windows and run the same application with the same datafile. Is this possible?

Re: Quicken vs MoneyDance - I looked at MoneyDance a while back and while it is comparable to Quicken for Mac, it isn't comparable to Quicken for Windows (ergo, Quicken for Mac isn't comparable to Quicken for Windows!). But, as I said, that is a topic for another thread!
Re: Using Bootcamp/Parallels for only one app: I actually have several apps that I still need access to on Windows. I work with many business applications than only run/are supported on Windows as well as receive some complex Office documents which Office for Mac cannot handle. Quicken (for Windows 2007) was just the best example of a consumer app where I could see wanting access from both OS X and Windows.

You can, yes. But there is a complication: once you activate windows it will only be activated for one of the two methods you use. So, let's say you install into boot camp and activate windows. You can then install Parallels and it will find your boot camp installation, but when running in Parallels, Windows will report that it is not activated. Or, you can activate it in Parallels and when running in Boot Camp Windows will report that it is not activated. The reason for this is because Windows thinks it is running on different computers depending on how you boot it. This may not be an issue for you if you run Windows a lot one way and just occasionally the other way, so be sure to activate Windows in whichever method you use more often. Hope this helps!

in general, it should be possible to run both tools (VLM and lmtools for FlexNet) on the same machine. But I wouldn't recommend you this way, because NI VLM is also build on top of FlexNet and sometimes you will receive ugly problems with the installation of both tools on the same PC. It is possible to use VLM in a virtual machine without any problems or restrictions. NI provides information about the usage of VLM in a virtual machine, like you can see here:

This shouldn't be a problem, so long as you have one SSID for WEP, and one SSID for WPA2. The antenna itself will not come into play for what type of encryption that is used.

Either Mail will crash or the iMac will run so slowly as to be unusable. With both running, the HDD spins constantly at a high rate of speed.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

Running RIPv2 and OSPF at the same time

What are the problems with running RIPv2 and OSPF at the same time if any? I have the gear capable of that and I have been doing this for over a year now. I wanted to get rid of RIP but my couterpart is scared because he is not OSPF skilled. I do have some remote sites with old 1601s to consider. Any suggestions or recommendations.

OSPF is far better than RIP when it comes to performance and advatnages compared to RIP and no doubt in that though it is complex to implement compared to RIP but once done it is smooth.
It is important to have a very well designed network with OSPF otherwise the behavior is unpredictable sometimes and it may not give desired results.
Also for your low capability routers like 1601s you can put them into stub or total stubby area so that they may have less load on them.

Why can't I run Safari and Skype at the same time without making my computer freeze up?

I can't believe I can't run Safari and Skype at the same time without my computer freezing up, it's a MacBook Pro with Mac OS 10.6.8 and it has an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU with 2.2 Ghz and 2 Gb of RAM. Is this a hardware problem or a software problem?

I haven't gone to the trouble of actually testing to see which uses more CPU power, but Firefox has been faster than Safari on every Mac I've ever owned.
To see CPU usage by process, open the terminal (in Utilities) and enter 'top' at the command line. You might have to expand the window as processes don't appear in any logical order.
It could also be hardware-related: I have late 2009 mini with similar specs and it pinwheels easily.

Flash CS6 and CC on the same computer?

Can I run Flash CS6 and CC on the same computer? I need inverse kinematics now only in CS6 but my computer in from my university and will shortly be converted over to FlashCC but I need many of the dropped old feratures. I'm seriously in trouble as I have a large animation I have been working onwith my students for months and very soon the workflow will come to a grinding stop. It's already bad as the lab computers have already moved over to CC. My laptop is now my only worrking option along with the students who have a copy of CS6. Hi how do you manage an Ipod and Iphone on the same computer?
I have my ihpone but for running and cycling i also have my ipod nano, every time i connect one or the other it wipes songs that i want to keep?

create a playlist for each device and sync only that playlist.
i'm syncing four mobile devices to iTunes and each has its own playlist. works like a charm.

Mini ipod and ipod on the same computer

I have a 40GB ipod on a Windows XP PC. My brother just received an ipod mini for Christmas. It won't allow us to install ipod mini software without unistalling previously installed itunes software. If we uninstall itunes, will it delete all the songs already on it? If not, is there any way to use an ipod mini and ipod on the same computer, with different itunes libraries. We do have seperate user accounts.

iPods come pre-formatted for Mac, so you will need to format it for Windows.
See this article to verify its format (if desired): How to determine iPod's hard disk format.
Make sure that you have the latest iPod Updater software
Then, make sure that the iPod is fully charged.
- Download the Update Installer to your PC (do not run it from the web site).
- Place the file on the Desktop, or in a Folder you can remember/find.
- You also need to install the Updater software by double-clicking on the file that downloads.
- After you install the Updater to your PC, reboot your computer.
- After rebooting, run the Updater.
--- Go to: Start ==> Programs ==> iPod.
- It should initialize then ask you to connect an iPod.
- Connect the iPod when asked (not before) and you should have two options available: Update or Restore.
--- Choose the Update option and it will update your iPod's firmware to the latest version.
--- Choose the Restore option and it will update your iPod's firmware to the latest version and format (erase) your iPod's hard drive.
Most of the current minis are the 2nd gen models. They do not need to be connected to an AC adaptor to complete the process. As long as you gave the mini a good several hours of charging before you format it for Windows, you should be good to continue. If your PC delivers enough power to charge the mini. no other power source is required (but others can work if connected).
