Is Safari 3.2 secure?

Does Safari 3.2 antiphishing do more harm than good?
I just read this over at oreilly.com, regarding the google safebrowsing.
"Every request is transmitted to Google over HTTP, i.e. in clear-text. This is not good. Here is why: Consider a web application that uses SSL to encrypt the session. If this web application were to submit private information about you via a GET request (i.e in the URL, such as a credit card number), this will now be transmitted to http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/lookup in clear-text, allowing someone on your network segment, or any router in between yourself and google.com to sniff the information off the wire."

Here's another article:
http://news.zdnet.com/2100-1009_22-151119.html
If you don't want to go through the article, here's the essential part of it:
Another issue has recently been raised regarding the Google Safe Browse product. When running in enhanced mode, each request to visit a Web page sends the entire GET request to Google in the clear (with out the use of encryption). More disturbing is that even when you are visiting a Web page that utilizes SSL to encrypt the data, Google sends a copy of the decrypted GET request to their server. Hence if you were submitting a credit card number to an SSL Web server in a GET request, the entire request would be sent to Google in the clear. Effectively anyone on the wire between you and Google would have the ability to see your credit card number in the clear.
Simply put, in their efforts to protect the user from a potential phishing exploit that may expose personal information--Google themselves when operating in enhanced mode are exposing the personal information found within the users GET requests "in the clear" and easily intercepted even when the user is visiting legitimate Web sites that use encryption (SSL) to protect their personal information.
The good intentions of Google to protect users from phishing sites have gone bad in a number of respects:
• The data collected by Google and used with the Google Safe Browsing product is available to anyone with an Internet connection. Hence anyone with an Internet connection has the ability to search through the data to harvest the personal data of users perhaps inadvertently collected by Google.
• The transmission of the users personal data in the clear within user GET requests to even legitimate Web sites when operating in enhanced mode exposes the users personal data (even when they are doing business on a Web server that uses SSL to protect the users data) to anyone along the connection path between the user and Google.
While Google maintains that the user is warned that data may be sent in the clear when running in enhanced mode before they are able to enact it, there is simply no excuse for Google to make the personal information found within the URL updates available for harvesting to the Internet connected public through a simple "Google Search."

  • Safari storing previous secure session data in plain text.

I was just forwarded a link stating that Safari stores previous secure session data unencrypted in a hiodden folder. The article said this applies to OS X 10.8.5,and OS X 10.7.5 running Safari 6.0.5. Has this vulnerability been fixed in Mavericks/Safari 7.0?
    http://securityaffairs.co/wordpress/20482/hacking/safari-unsecure-data-storage.h tml

It's not the transit that I'm asking about, but a secure local session with private info in a hidden folder. If another user gains access to this hidden folder, then private info can be disclosed (i.e., passwords, address).

  • Can Send Mail, But Can't Receive Mail (Post Safari 3.1 & Security Update)

    Weird!
I was able to receive mail when I first came in today, but since updating this morning to Safari 3.1 and Security Update, unable to receive messages.
In "Activity Viewer", I can see Mail trying to get messages but stalls on "Fetching new mail...", "[INBOX - XXX] Updating cache, comparing notes on server...", and "Synchronizing with server... Traversing mailbox hierarchy..."
Not sure if it's related to updates, but it sure seems like it
The IT guys here at work are VERY PC-biased and tend to blame these type of things on "those Macs", so I could use your help!!!

Yeah, I'm having problems as well since the update. I get a message from the mail app that says
Mail was unable to verify the identity of this server, which has a certificate issued to "mail.mac.com". The error was:
An SSL error occurred while trying to read data from the server "mail.mac.com". Verify that this server supports SSL and that your account settings are correct.
You might be connecting to a computer that is pretending to be "mail.mac.com", and putting your confidential information at risk. Would you like to continue anyway?
    I've not encountered this before.

  • Safari cannot create secure connection with certain websites

I have OS X 10.10 with every available updates, and Safari's currently unable to 'establish secure connection' with some site I'm trying to connect, most disturbing being the whole Steam network (store/support.steampowered.com, steamcommunity.com, etc). IE (via Bootcamp), Chrome (both standalone and integrated into Steam client) and Firefox have no problem doing so.
Considering sometime before the in Steam browser indicated the site as insecure (a red lock icon with a cross, typically used to indicate bad cert) for a short time, and hearing of certs issued to gov agencies for man in the middle, I compared the cert for store.steampowered.com/login (which, in contrary to most content on that domain, forces a secure connection) and this discussions.apple.com. Well Firefox and IE do show a normal grey lock icon without organization name, and Chrome admits the website's ownership is unverified (in details, it says ownership is verified by the CA but there's no public verification record; the secure setting of that site has outdated, too) despite having Valve's name and green lock icon. So the cert could be a fake since it's an ordinary (I guess?) cert from a EV authority (DigiCert High Assurance EV CA-1 in this case). The certificate shown from Chrome is totally fine (not a single red cross in the chain), though.
Well there're other https resources Safari fails to create a secure connection with every now and then. I just forgot/ am unable to test them with other browsers (Sometimes it's not the page itself that can't be retrieved via https, but some resource it loads. Sadly I only know how to use Inspector in Safari, though I'm sure other browsers have similar functions, too). I suspect Safari just refuses such certificates (or the AES_128_CBC method maybe) while other browsers accept it. Is there an override for this?
Weird enough, https://ev-root.digicert.com/ has grey lock on Firefox and Safari. Seems overriding is the only workaround.
As a side note, my Safari freezes upon loading PayPal, being ir-responsive for tens of seconds on every activity such as clicking a link. For most of duration of the freeze no high CPU usage is monitored, though ocspd does sometimes take 50% or so, and the web process bursts into 100% immediately before unfreezing. Guess Yosemite has some issues with TLS on the system level.

This could be a complicated problem to solve, as there are several possible causes for it.
Back up all data, then take each of the following steps that you haven't already taken. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Date & Time
Select the Time Zone tab in the preference pane that opens and check that the time zone matches your location. Then select the Date & Time tab. Check that the data and time shown (including the year) are correct, and correct them if not.
    Check the box marked
              Set date and time automatically
if it's not already checked, and select one of the Apple time servers from the menu next to it.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /System/Library/Keychains/SystemCACertificates.keychain
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Show Info
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open. The dialog should show "You can only read" in the Sharing & Permissions section.
    Repeat with this line:
    /System/Library/Keychains/SystemRootCertificates.keychain
If instead of the Info dialog, you get a message that either file can't be found, reinstall OS X.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Open a TextEdit window and paste into it by pressing command-V. Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.
    Step 3
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
In the upper left corner of the window, you should see a list headed Keychains. If not, click the button in the lower left corner that looks like a triangle inside a square.
In the Keychains list, there should be items named System and System Roots. If not, select
              File ▹ Add Keychain
from the menu bar and add the following items:
    /Library/Keychains/System.keychain
    /System/Library/Keychains/SystemRootCertificates.keychain
Open the View menu in the menu bar. If one of the items in the menu is
              Show Expired Certificates
select it. Otherwise it will show
              Hide Expired Certificates
    which is what you want.
From the Category list in the lower left corner of the window, select Certificates. Look carefully at the list of certificates in the right side of the window. If any of them has a blue-and-white plus sign or a red "X" in the icon, double-click it. An inspection window will open. Click the disclosure triangle labeled Trust to disclose the trust settings for the certificate. From the menu labeled
              Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
    select
              no value specified
Close the inspection window. You'll be prompted for your administrator password to update the settings.
Now open the same inspection window again, and select
When using this certificate: Use System Defaults
Save the change in the same way as before.
Revert all the certificates with non-default trust settings. Never again change any of those settings.
    Step 4
Select My Certificates from the Category list. From the list of certificates shown, delete any that are marked with a red X as expired or invalid.
Export all remaining certificates, delete them from the keychain, and reimport. For instructions, select
              Help ▹ Keychain Access Help
from the menu bar and search for the term "export" in the help window. Export each certificate as an individual file; don't combine them into one big file.
    Step 5
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences... ▹ Certificates
There are three menus in the window. Change the selection in the top two to Best attempt, and in the bottom one to  CRL.
    Step 6
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    /var/db/crls
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "crls" should open. Move all the files in that folder to the Trash. You’ll be prompted for your administrator login password.
Restart the computer, empty the Trash, and test.
    Step 7
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    open -e /etc/hosts
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting. A TextEdit window should open. At the top of the window, you should see this:
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting.  Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1                              localhost
    255.255.255.255          broadcasthost
    ::1                                        localhost
    fe80::1%lo0                    localhost
If that's not what you see, post the contents of the window.

ive hardly a clue what any of this is but i have figured out its not my net connection because firefox that im using to type this works fine. if a bit slow

    HI,
    have the HTTP protocol checked
Deselect any boxes ticked under "Select a protocol to configure" in System Preferences/Network - Proxies.
    Relaunch Safari.
Your profile indicates your Mac is running 10.4.3. If that is the case, you need to click the Apple Menu/Software Updates. Minimum requirements for Safari 4 is 10.4.11.

  • Safari not showing secure site images (blue question marks)

I have Safari 4 installed on my Windows laptop. I am having a problem viewing secure sites. All that appears is the text and then blue question marks where the images/tables should be. This is not a problem when using Firefox, Chrome, or IE.
This is also not a problem on my other windows computers nor on my Mac.
I've tried resetting Safari, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Safari, nothing is working.
Any idea how to fix this?

I too am having this problem. I cannot access my gmail, ebay, facebook, or other login sites. If I attempt to access any site that requests user and password information, a safari dialogue stating "safari can't verify the identity of the website "...."". So far I've assumed that all of my certificates are comprimised. I don't know how to delete my certificates to get new ones as this information is not posted anywhere.

  • Safari connection drops "Secure Connection" urls

I began receiving this error in Safari a few days ago:
Safari can’t open the page “https://www.apple.com/support/mod_ssl:error:HTTP-request”. The error was: “lost network connection” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1005) Please choose Report Bug to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.
...upon attemting to load websites that use/initiate "secure connections" such as GMail and the login page here on Apple Discussions. This problem is occuring on a previously trouble free 10.4.5. I have had Saft installed for quite a while now.
I have experimented with toggling related Preferences in both Safari and Saft, to no avail. What could be the root of this problem? In the worst case, is it possible to reinstall Safari? Thanks for your time.

  • Safari Update required security code for validation

I have an I Phone 5 & 6.  Received a request for a Safari update.  First asked for phone number.  None entered were accepted.  Then asked to enter security code sent to you in order to complete validation.  Did not receive a security code.  Don't know what this is asking for.  Any suggestions?

I had this problem this morning on my iPhone 5. I went into Settings>>Safari>>Clear History and Website Data and clicked that. Unfortunately you'll lose any pages you had open as well as browsing history. However, this solved the problem immediately.

  • Safari not opening secure pages

    Hey All,
Safari wont open any pages such as youtube, facebook etc saying that it cannot establish a secure server. This just happened about 3 hours ago just as my mac went to sleep. The only new thing I did was use an HDMI cable to connect to my TV. The mac had been shutdown for low battery because i fell asleep on movie. Anyways, I woke up plugged in my charger only to find that i can't connect to certain sites... Further compounding my problem is a taskbar that says "The certificate for this website is invalid. You might be connecting to a website that is pretending to be <url here>..." HELP!!!

Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar. Log into the Guest User.
    Test Safari.
If it works in the new User, we know it's a problem in your User's folder, If it fails in the new User it's a problem with the base files.
Let us know what happens in the new User and we'll work on a fix.

  • "Foreign" text in Safari after latest security update

After reading several posts, I've tried all suggestions, but still get wierd-looking type (maybe Russian), which is also compressed and unlegible. I've tried: reloading Safari, throwing away Safari preference, removing Times Phonetic and Helvetica Fractions fonts, repairing permissions - yet still get the same results.
I can switch to AOL (within Safari) and same thing happens; logging on to AOL outside Safari is fine - no type wierdness.
This all started following installation of the latest security update. Any other suggestions on what I can try?
    Thanks,

  • Safari Not Allowing Secure Site

I updated my Mac Software to OSX 10.4 this morning and I've been noticing some issues with Safari 2.
The main issue is it won't let me open pages that require a secure authentication (for example it wouldn't allow me to access to login page for the Apple forums -- I'm here with Firefox now). It brings up a page that says cannot open page.
I've also tried it with my bank and credit card and get the same response.
Any idea what's the problem here?

You're welcome. Glad you got this sorted out. The anchor keychains are critical for accessing in Safari any secured site.
Regarding 10.4.6, the most stable version of OS X is either 10.4.9 or 10.4.10 Also, these two versions contain the latest security upgrades for Safari.
Download access for 10.4.9 may be found here. As with the previous post's recommendation about 10.4.10, important to "repair permissions" etc. if installing. Also, do not use the computer during the installation phase.

  • How do I force a safari safe browsing security update?

Just to be safe I'd like to force the latest safe browsing update on Safari.
    How do I do that?

The safebrowsing.db file contains the blacklists from Google’s Safe Browsing Initiative - the file was probably created when you first launched Safari, and if you have the browser open, the file is modified approximately every 30 minutes.
In other words it is part of Safari's anti-phishing security feature. As it is a cache file it would presumably be re-created next time you open Safari, but would have to rebuild its cache of potentially bad sites.
It will be recreated next time you open Safari, and will then start again collecting details of dodgy websites.
How the Anti-Phishing feature of Safari 3.2 onwards works:

  • Safari crash, Apple security update doesn't make sence

At first, I used safari 1.3( I use Mac OS X 10.3.9), but It broke down, any time i tried to close a window, quit or open a large website, safari hung up, and unresponding for a while, then it closed suddently. I had a sugesstion to send the bug report to Apple, I did for thousand times. I was tired, so I changed in to safari 1.2, It worked well, but after I installed the security update, even the version 1.2 had exactly the same problem. It drives me crazy, I have to use Firefox while i prefer Safari. does any one have any solutions? Thanks

  • Mail and Safari crashes after Security Update 2007-006 and update 10.4.10

I just installed Security Update 2007-006 (Universal) and Mac OS X Update (Intel) 10.4.10 and now neither Mail nor Safari (nor sometimes Microsoft Messanger) will start. They just crash immediately after starting. Safari started working for a short while, but now, again, it won't start either, and Mail has not opened once since installing these two updates without immediately crashing. Does anyone have any idea why that might be so or how I can fix it?

    Hi Barry,
Thank you very much for your quick answer. I never installed Safari 3 beta. I ran the repair disk and repair permissions from my install DVD, and did it did find and fix errors. I also deleted com.apple.safari.plist as suggested, but neither Safari nor Mail will open yet without crashing immediately (I've also rebooted since doing so). Additionally, I found a suggestion on another website to try installing "Mac OSX Update Combo 10.4.10"--Software Update installed the non-combo version, whatever that means, but the Combo installer app also crashes when I try to start it. Do you have any other suggestions? What other information can I give that could help? These problems only occurred after my reboot this morning after installing the OSX and security updates. Anyway, thanks for your help.

  • Safari debug menu: Security submenu items greyed out

I'm using Safari Version 2.0.3 (417.9.2), and have activated the Debug menu.
Under the Security submenu, all of the options are greyed out. I need to "enable Lax security checks" because I'm having trouble with certificates on a particular website.
If someone knows the equivalent terminal command, it would be much appreciated.
I've tried repairing permissions, deleting the com.apple.safari.plist, and resetting safari. Any other suggestions?

    Hi Richard!
I'm not sure about the Security items in the Debug menu...but about the page that refreshes try to delete the cookies associated with that site. I had a similar problem before and I contacted the help for that site and followed that suggestion and it's worked ever since. Maybe it will for you too?
