Is screen sharing through Messages limited to third-party accounts in Yosemite like it is in Mavericks?

So I was told this by an Apple support member through the online chat, but everything else I've been reading seems contradictory. Every blog post I've read, and even Apple's own website makes it seems like you can screen share on Messages with any contact with an iMessage account (in Mavericks, it was limited to third-party accounts signed into Messages like Google, Jabber, AIM, etc...).
I was able to screen share through the iMessages account if the two computers were on the same network (both on wifi, or both tethered to the same phone), but not if they were on separate networks. Which seems almost next to useless. It'd be nice to just get a breakdown of what's possible with screen sharing through Messages.
So far it seems like:
1. Screen sharing is possible using a third-party account (as per in Mavericks).
2. Screen sharing is possible using an iMessages account only within the same network (added in Yosemite). <- if this is really all that was "added", they really should make that clear, rather than making it seem like iMessage accounts have the same utility as third-party ones.
Just want someone to confirm this. Thanks!

Hi,
Screen Sharing only works with an AIM Account (AOL) or a Jabber ID  when the person at the other end is also using the same sort of Account and a Mac with iChat or Messages.
The Bonjour Account which is used for LAN based Mac to Mac Chats can also Screen Share.
The Yahoo account (if you have one) is Text only. It does not even do File Sharing.  It does not do Video Chat, Audio Only ones or Screen Sharing.
The iMessages account does not do Video chats (or Audio Only)
What it does do is invoke the FaceTime App.
FaceTime does not Screen Share.

Share your screen
You and a friend with Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard or later can share a screen, making it easy to collaborate on a project.
When you share a screen, you and your friend can do anything on the shared desktop, such as opening folders, creating documents, and copying files by dragging them from one desktop to another. Messages automatically starts an audio chat.
You can share screens using AIM, Jabber, Google Talk, and Bonjour. You can’t share screens using Yahoo! or iMessage.
Important: When you share your screen, your friend has the same access to your computer that you have. Share your screen only with people you trust, and be careful if you receive a request to share your screen from someone who isn’t in your buddy list. If the request comes from someone using Bonjour, remember that the name shown for the person in Bonjour does not necessarily match the person’s real name.
See the Line above the one where the word "important" is in bold text.
OS X 10.5 is the one with iChat 4.x.x with it.
To be clear:-
iChat 1 was an AIM client but also had the Bonjour account under it's previous name of Rendezvous
iChat 3 added Jabber capabilities
iChat 6 added Yahoo ones. (extremely limited)
Messages brings the Name change and the focus on the iMessages account with the associated window changes.
This means Messages can join 5 "services"
Opening Messages asks you for an Apple ID to register with iMessages.
It also has the Bonjour account present but not turned On.
You can add anything you used in iChat
Some Apple Issued ID are valid AIM Screen Names
GoogleTalk and Facebook Chat IDs works as Jabber IDs
Apple IDs
These can be considered in some ways to be separated into different functions or layers.
The first difference is between external emails and Apple Issued ones that end in @mac.com, @me.com and @icloud.com  (Some people are using a small number of pre Email linked Apple IDs - about 15 years or older accounts.)
The Apple Issued ones can be used as AIM Screen Names.
You can also distinguish between iCloud Linked ones and plain Apple IDs
As Apple changed from MobileMe to iCloud they used  and linked @me.com IDs to iCloud as people registered for iCloud.
Later they issued iCloud ending emails  (you may have both)
This leaves you with "All iCloud IDs are Apple IDs, but not all Apple IDs are iCloud ID ones".
The short answer is if an Account in Messages can Video within the app (not invoke another app) then it can Screen Share.

  • Screen Sharing through Messages

I'm having a bit of an issue with screen sharing.  I'm running the latest version of Yosemite as is the other machine. (Mac Mini 2011)(MBP 2009) On both machines:  Firewall was turned off and it didn't work, then I turned it on and allowed screen sharing(no change).  I went into preferences and allowed all sharing(no change).
When I try to initiate screen sharing I get the option in Messages.  The other person never gets the alert.  When they try to initiate it with me using Messages, it's greyed out and they can't send any requests.
Any ideas if this is a known bug or something else I'm missing?

  • IChat screen sharing through Orange livebox (UK)

I am able to establish video connection through iChat with my father in the UK, but cannot establish screen sharing. After spending time on the phone with Apple support here in Canada, Apple in the UK, and my father's ISP Orange, it appears that the problem is with the Orange "livebox." Orange are telling us that they don't support the feature.
Has anyone else been able to find a workaround so that they can establish screen sharing through a livebox?

  • Response message back to Third party vendor webservices

Third party vendor sends messages to a webservice. The SOA application takes the message and puts it into a JMS topic through a mediator with asynchronous interface. All good so far, the system now needs to send a response back to the third party's webservice saying the message processing failed or was successful. For mediator, there are two concepts callback and response. What is the difference between callback and reponse. Which one should I use to send response message back to third party. Do I need OSB for this?
Please suggest the approach for getting this implemented. I am fairly fresh to the SOA components and appreciate help in this regard. I hope I am making sense, if not feel free for more clarification. I am struck on this for atleast a week now.
    Thanks

I am using the mediator component which does callback and response as per the SOA user guide. I am not sure, while sending response back to third party, should I be using callback or response. There are no use cases for asychronous interaction using jms topics in Oracle samples examples also.
Looking forward for some help or suggestions
    Thanks

  • Computer won't access or stay registered with third party accounts after new hard drive installed

Had a hard drive crash a a few months ago on iMac. Took it to an Apple-certified repair place, and they installed a new hard drive. (And I think updated the OS as well.)  iMac is working great, but have run into an odd issue with signing into accounts -- such as stores, banks, etc. Each time I try to sign in I need to reregister the computer or in some cases, I simply can't sign into the account at all, despite using the correct user name and password. Tried calling the third party accounts customer support and got "It's a Mac - we don't have anyone who does that." One other place said it "might have something to do with cookies."
Can anyone help out with this one? It is extremely annoying!
    Thanks!!

Thanks. This seems to have worked.
I ran the reinstall and then upgraded back to 10.6.8 via software update, and App Store and iTunes both work now.  I was able to log into my iTunes account and my old purchase of 10.7 was there.  I'm downloading it now as I type this.
I still have to deal with the fact that iLife and iWork and Xcode aren't working (and probably other things too), but the biggest hurdle seems to be crossed.  I'll deal with the other apps tomorrow.
    Thanks again!

  • Third Party Account Ownership

We rely on a number of third party accounts for our corporate social network presence and a number of other web based collaboration/communication tools. As we've seen in some of the career threads... names change. On top of that, some systems (like iContact, for example) reject role-based user names for all or part of their functionality.
Has anyone come up with a strategy for managing third party account ownership that maintains continuity without compromising security?
    Thanks.

    Hey Raj,
Sorry if i have not conveyed my issue correctly.
These are the standard acct determination
    0001   VAX      3100      500000
    0001   VAX      3105      500010
    0001   VAX      7920      500000
When i do a standard sales process using a Finished or a trading material, 500000 is determined during goods issue thro the valuation class 7920 and 3100 respectively.
But when i do a third party process with the same finished or a trading material it determines again 500000 instead of 500010. Is there any way i can make this account (500010) determined without changing the valuation class in the materials?
    Regards,

  • No iMessage third party accounts show up aside from Yahoo!

None of the accounts (like AIM or GoogleTalk) appear in my add box for third party accounts, only Yahoo! shows up.

    Humm,
At this stage for iChat I would recommend Reinstalling the app as it is a relatively simple job from the Install Disk.
However in Mountain Lion this is not possible as you have to reinstall  the whole OS (not difficult but time consuming)
I would try downloading the OS X 10.8.3 COMBO Update and installing this over the top.
If that does not work you will have to use the Recovery option to reinstall the OS.

  • Is screen sharing through the Messages app encrypted?

The Messages app in Mavericks has the option to share your screen (Buddies > Share my screen...). Just learned about it today.
I've been wondering how secure it is to use over the internet.
Any thoughts as to if the screen sharing session is encrypted?
I'm using Mavericks, and haven't found anything that says if the sessions are encrypted or not.

    Hi,
The Messages app can use different ID to use the different services.
It can use Apple IDs to use the iMessages service (Text Only) But you can invoke FaceTime from an existing conversation.
By default you also get the Bonjour Account.
If you have other Macs on your LAN (and they use iChat or Messages with Bonjour Enabled) you can Screen Share with them (in addition to Video Or Audio Only chats).
You can join the AIM service with some Apple IDs (ending in @me.com and @icloud.com in most cases and sometime @mac.com depending on your OS version) and of course with AIM or AOL registered Screen Names.
Mac to Mac (iChat or Messages) these can Screen Share over the internet.
Whilst the Login may be SSL (AIM almost insist on in nowadays) the Video chats, Audio Only chats and Screen Sharing are Peer-to Peer connections.
There are steps in the connection process to make sure you are not vulnerable to "Man-in-the-Middle" attacks.
They will only work AIM to AIM.
Jabber (Or XXMP) accounts can include GoogleTalk or Google Mail IDs in reality or Facebook chat IDs are valid Jabber IDs.
You can of course register for a Jabber ID on any other Jabber server you know about.
These will work Jabber to Jabber must be to a Mac using iChat or Messages and not other apps or web Browser logins (As you can do with both Facebook and Google).
The Yahoo account is text only.

  • Mouse pointer/cursor clicking fails while screen sharing in Messages & iChat

Has anyone else had this problem?
My work partner is sharing her screen using iChat on OS 10.6.8 and I'm controlling it with Messages on OS 10.8.3 - usually working on Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.
Every few minutes or so, I lose the ability to click anything on her screen. Audio/video works fine, and my keyboard commands run fine on her computer, I can usually even move the pointer fine but, clicking my mouse or trackpad has no affect on her computer. This is sometimes accompanied by a flashing stalled pointer.
We can usually fix it by having her click her mouse/trackpad a couple times and then I can continue with clicking again from mine.
But, sometimes she's not at the computer so there's no way for me to recover screen share clicking when her computer is unattended.
We both have high speed internet with 10+mb down and 5+mb up speeds.
I've also tried it with bluetooth off and still have the same problem.
Does anyone know how to recover from failed mouse clicking during screen sharing?
    Thanks.

    HI,
I have not see this but at the same time I do not Screen Share as extensively as you seem to describe.
One interpretation I could out on this from what you have written is that not only is your girlfriend getting bored and wondering Off  ( ) but her computer may also be going to sleep.
I have never waited long enough for one of my other computers to go to Sleep during a Screen Share to find out what happens.
    1) does the Share Screen go dark ?
    2) do you lose the connection as it closes the network ?
    3) Is a Screen Saver starting that you can see ?
    4) what does your girlfriend see when this happens ?
I would guess there is something about the VNC part of the iChat Screen Sharing that stops the Shared computer going to sleep.
However I am not sure if a Screen Saver can be active or if you are bumping into the time set for one to start.
I would also be interested in what the other computer is doing in a "behind the scenes" way.
Is something using up the Processor cycles and holding up the Share view as it were ?
I would guess her computer is doing something on it's own such as fetching Mail or similar or even the Time Machine Back up which can be known to cause the computer to be held up for a moment or two.

  • Screen sharing thru message app

    Hi,
I just upgraded to Yosemite on my Macbook Air mid 2011. When I tried the screen sharing in the message, I found the the icon of it was greyed out so that I had to no way to invite or ask to share the screen. On my iMac 2012, this feature works without any problem.
Is this a bug or a setting issue?
    Thanks.

I believe I resolved my issue.  It turned out that the person I was attempting to share my scree with had a problem with his installation of Messages wherein his messages were not replicating to all of his devices.  He called Apple support and they were able to fix that problem.  We then re-tested screen sharing and I was then able to share my screen successfully with him.
The lesson learned, when this happens, is to first verify that Messages is working correctly for the person you are attempting to share screens with.  I also have found that the sharing icon will appear grayed out if you attempt to share screens with a person connected via iPhone (4S in this case).

  • Enabling screen sharing through .mac or VNC

I want to enable screen sharing on my desktop computer from another network (so I can connect to my home machine from the office, or on the road). I have successfully enabled my router to allow VNC traffic, and have been able to connect from my laptop on another network. Everything seems to be working fine besides the fact that I am concerned about having port 5900 open on my home router. Is connecting using a .mac account more secure? I suppose I would be able to turn off port 5900 on my router, but I'd also have to pay $100 a year, and worry about someone hacking my .mac account also (I really wish that apple would come out with [FREE] remote desktop software like windows!).

    My last effort
    turn on process accounting:
    "mkdir /var/account"
    "touch /var/account/acct"
    "accton /var/account/acct" or reboot
    "chmod o-rx /usr/bin/lastcomm"
    "chmod -R o-rx /var/account"
Everything has to be run in sudo. If you do the above, then run sudo lastcomm and check what that says.

  • Screen Sharing through iChat over VPN

Does anybody know how to make screen sharing with iChat work over a VPN? It used to work for me but now it only seems to work in one direction. I was testing it earlier today and this is what I saw:
VPN client shares their screen with a machine on the physical local network - OK
VPN client requests the screen of a local machine - Fails with "did not receive data error" after a brief audio-only connection.
Local clients shares their screen with VPN clients - Fails with "dd not receive data"
Local clients requests the screen of a VPN client - Fails with "did not receive data"
The VPN is definitely the culprit, the machines can screen-share fine outside of it, and can curiously screen-share fine with the server on our local network when they are VPN'ed in, just not with each other. The server is running 10.5.4.
Anybody have any experience in making this work?
