Is Shake as good for miniDV footage?

This is also posted at creativecow:
I want to take on a project that will involve various tools/effects. I'm researching Shake (now that it's $499) and it appears to be the right tool for the job. However, I've only used FCP and your knowledge will be greatly appreciated. (I had previously considered AE and Combustion.)
Here is what my project will need:
1. Rotoscoping - to create a 'clipping effect' of a person walking thru an object/wall. Cleaning up shots that greenscreening didn't cover completely. Fix composited shots where there is improper overlapping.
2. SuperSlow Motion - How slow can I go? Can I go to a stop and ramp back up? Is it smooth?
3. Tracking - for compositing 2d items together. (Using tracking data from someones eyes and applying a paint operation to it. Or creating a sign that would be added to the scene where the camera is moving.)
4. Stablizing handheld shots - I'll try to be as still as possible, but this could be very valuable. (I figure this could begin to look awful if there is too much bounce in the footage because miniDV probably doesn't scale up very much.)
I know Shake can handle these tasks, but I'm questioning how well it will perform with my miniDV footage. Are others using Shake with miniDV? Are they/you satisfied with Shake... is it what you expected?
Lastly, I currently have a one button mouse. The Apple three button mouse seems OK... What do you recommend?
Thanks,
Jon Banker

Howdy,
I shoot all I do in MiniDV. I am just doing little corporate videos and such. Let me just respond to what I know.
1. We have rotoscoped a car. Me walking toward the car. It turned out pretty good for only spending an afternoon. If you allocate lots of time, you can make it look pretty good with Rotoscoping in Shake.
2. No Experience
3. I have recreated the HP Photo Commercial using the MatchMove Node. It turned out pretty well. It is a little tough to get a Really good Track with MiniDV, but with a lot of patience it can be done.
4. No Experience
I use Shake 4.1 on an Intel iMac. It runs really nice on MiniDV Footage.
Take Care,
Nate

You might try contacting the local school district's special needs people - this is something they will be familiar with. Also if you have a local cerebral palsy organization they might be able to point you in the right direction. Assistive software and devices do exist but I am too far out of that loop these days to give any specific help.

  • Disk full message capturing miniDV footage

    Hi,
This is my first attempt to use FCE and I have a network setup that is primarily Windows XP.
I set a new FCE project to capture miniDV footage from a cheap JVC camcorder. The capture started okay but terminated after approx 9 minutes reporting an error message indicating the disk was full.
My Macbook had 9.9 gig free (which was not set as the location for scratch) and my Maxtor Shared Storage II drive had 250 gig free. This is set as scratch.
I had a look at the files created by the capture. It had created a quicktime file, named "Untitled1" in the folder "Untitled Project 1" that was 2 gig in size.
I seem to recall that Windows files are limited to 2gig and suspect this is the actual error.
I have also read in the FCE help re a similar type of problem that can be resolved by formatting the drive using the Mac disk Utility.
The drive I have been using is a 500gb mirrored Maxtor Shared Storage II connected via a network router. However if I need to dedicate a drive over to FCe / Mac usage I will be using a 500gig (unmirrored) Maxtor Shared Storage Drive (previous model) also conencted to the network via 10/100 network connection.
Could anyone confirm I have got this error correctly interpreted and if anyone has any experience with these drives and Mac's that would also be helpful.
The drives are spec'd to support Mac files but do not specifically support AFS. They show as NTFS via Windows XP interface but I do not know how to get this info via the Mac as yet. I will also be contacting Maxtor support via this. Its the FCE help I would really appreciate.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Thanks for the replies everyone. I was rather hoping direct connection to the mac would not be essential as the drive does not have a firewire port, only USB2 x 2 and the ethernet connnection.
What if the connection is 100/1000 mbits. Would this comms method still be unreliable?
If I do need to get a new drive, what would be the minimum size you would recommend? I guess a type with a small footprint would be good so that, if it must be directly connected, I might as well take advantage of portability too (as I only have a MacBook).

  • Is the Hardware and Software enough/good for my needs

I've been reading these forums and a few others and am concerned about somethings and hope some of you can help with these concerns:
    Some background and info:
    1. I've ordered a Dell XPS 720 H2C which as a Intel Core2 Extreme processor QX6700 (3.46GHz,,Overclocked) w/Quad Core Technology and 8MBcache, 4 GB RAM, Dual 768MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTX, 1.5TB RAID 0 HDD and a secondary 500GB SATA 3GB/s (No option for a RAID 0 secondary HDD, Windows VISTA ultimate OS.
    2. Will be buying/upgarding the Production Premium CS3 package. (currently only use PhotoShop CS3 and Flash CS3).
    3. I have a Canon XH A1 prosumer video camera (I'm an amature photographer/videographer not a professional. Software is my forte).
My questions at this moment are to do with hardware software capabilties and workflow.
My first project (of many I hope) is a make some corporate videos in HDV format for online marketing purposes (kind of like the videos Adobe have for CS3 - http://www.adobe.com/creativelicense/) and possibly to produce DVDs of the same.
My first question is; Given the hardware and software, will I be able to do what I need? I really hope I don't have to go buy any more hardware. I don't mind having to do one or two more steps. to achieve the end goal (initially).
Starting with the mode to shoot in (for the purpose stated above), what is my workflow going to be?
    i. What is the best mode to shoot in? (24f, 30f, 60i)
ii. How do I get the video from the MiniDV tape onto my HDD and then into Premier Pro.
iii. I need to be able to compisite multiple HDV clips to produce the final cut. Is the hardware and software good for this? On a scale of 1 to 10, what can I expect in terms of productivity.
I've heard elsewhere that Premier Pro just don't produce true HD quality results. Is this earlier versions.
What format/compression and dimension is the best for online viewing (I want to retain the HD quaility as far as possible.)
Thank you all for listening and hope to hear your opinions.
    Shiv.

    Steven,
Thank you for your quick reply and information there in. The video is very nice too. Great angles and composition.
So I guess, I'm going to have swap my drive and re-install my OS when the machine arrives.
I'm not going to be able to capture directly to my desktop (due to poratability reasons). So is there I way in Premire CS3 to uncompress the HDV from the camera and store it in my HDD in uncompressed format? I don't mind having to do this extra step each time if the post production experience is going to be better.
I've heard a lot about Aspect HD from you and others here as well as other forums. I'm not very video savvy yet and don't understand a lot of the vocabulary used :). I've been to their website and don't get what their products are supposed to give me either (I guess their audience understands exactly what they are saying).
What I do get is it decompresses the MPEG 2 to saves it to yout HDD for editing purposes. However, I would have thought the Premier Pro CS3 would have that capability as part of the product, no?
I'd also like to use footage that is not HDV as well as photos/images (composits) but still retain the final cut to be HDV quality. Is this possible and if so, what does it do to the editing experience/performance?
Will I be able to output the final cut back to my camera's Mini DV tape (without having to buy Aspect HD)?

  • Correcting MiniDV footage yields artifacts

I did some masking of MiniDV footage captured by FCP and output as Quicktime Animation. What came out looks like an analog dub of a dub of a dub of a dub. It's got pixelization around the edges of the person and some strange grain-like artifacts in the dark areas.
Anybody get this? How can I ensure footage as crisp when it comes out as it is when it goes in?

Thanks for your interest. I'll see what I can do regarding a still. Not sure if the digital blockiness around the edges will show up or not, but I'll try. It's definitely a "deal-breaker" when it runs in motion. I've gotten the same thing anytime I've tried doing key-outs in Shake as well. I don't get the same thing when keying out a green screen in FCP. I've been very happy with the way FCP handles green-screening. I had been hopeful Shake would be ever better. So far, I haven't achieved it.
Is there a codec you would recommend over Animation?

  • Why do I have to render MiniDV footage?

Here's my problem. I have MiniDV footage that I have log and captured with Final Cut Pro. I imported the footage, used easy set-up to create a NTSC-DV anamorphic sequence, but when I drag the files onto the time line a red line appears for the audio tracks, requiring me to render them every time. My files were imported as they should be at 48Khz, 16 bit, and the audio format is 33-bit floating, for both the clips and sequence but the red line comes up no matter what I do. Anyone know why this is happening?

Well Michael was right about the 32-bit Floating Point being suspect. The project that I'm working on encompasses about 15 hours of MiniDV footage. I started working with some of the clips that I shot earlier on in the process and when I dropped them into the sequence there was no render issue. When I checked their specs, it turns out that those clips are in the 16 bit integer audio format as opposed to the 32-bit floating that some of the later footage is in. I'm not sure what caused the difference in audio format. I used the same camera, with the same audio settings. I noticed in the finder window that the file type for those 32-bit floating files is called 'DV Movie' and there's a .dv at the end. Very weird. I'm 99% sure that I imported them all with final cut not imovie or anything, but who knows. I guess I'll re-import those clips again, since it seems to only be about 20% of my footage that is in this format. Thanks for everyone's input.

  • Is Zen micro good for joggi

I'm just about to buy a Zen micro, but I read from their Q&A that it's not recommended for sudden shakes like jogging. This is really holding me back. Has anyone tried jogging with it and is it still in one piece without internal injuries afterwards? Heard ipods would be better for jogging but it has no features at all.

From what I've read no HD player is good for jogging and many iPods have been trashed that way eventually. I would recommend a flash player such as the C00 Sport, not as much space as a hard dri've obviously but you can expand it to .25GB with SD cards and carry a few about with you if you need more space.

  • Free Goods for Materials from the same division

    Hi Friends,
We are trying to configure free goods based on customer and division in our system. If a customer orders any material belonging to a specific division, he is entitled for a free good.
For this we created a new condition table based on customer and division and maintained condition records that if he orders 100 qty of any material in Division 10 that he is entitled for 1 qty of material X.
Now the problem is that at the time of creating the sales order if Material A is entered for qty 50 and Material B is for qty 50 then the system does not give free goods. However, if we enter Materail A for 100 qty it gives the free goods 1 qty of Material X. Similarly, for Mat B with 100 qty it gives Mat X as free goods.
The system is not adding up the quantities for the multiple line items to calculate the free goods.
Is there any way by which we can achieve this.
    Regards,
    Abhishek

    Hi,
So far me too have configured and getting free goods for one material. for your requirement, i think you have to tell your Abaper to do corresponding Enhancement.
    Thanks

  • I am using the Good for Enterprise app to synch my outlook email and when I try to turn on ICloud to synch my music in ITunes I get a warning that I will not be able to synch my Iphone 4S with my computer.  Does this mean my office PC or home Mac?

I am using Good For Enterprise on my Iphone 4s to connect with my Office PC Outlook email system.  I am having trouble synching my Itunes music from my Mac at home with my IPhone 4s.  I am considering using ICloud to share the music as I also have an IPad2.  When I go to turn on the ICloud application, I get a message that alerts me to the fact I will no longer be able to synch with my computer.  Does that mean with my Office PC and my Outlook email, or my Mac and my home email and other applications?  I want to use the ICloud but don't want to screw up my Good for Enterprise application and connectivity with my Office PC and Outlook email.  What should I do to be able to update all my tunes and photos on my IPhone 4S and IPad2 from my Mac?

I seem to never tire of saying this. It was for Apple when they first announced 10.7 to disclose this. Yes, it was widely reported -- or rather, rumored -- but not by Apple. And many people who have gotten caught by this assumed that Apple itself would have told them beforehand about the loss of this very important feature which they had come to rely on. As far as I know, not even in fine print, does this appear anywhere on the Lion announcement or any of its links.
I am not saying Apple had to continue Rosetta in Lion, or forever, just that if it was going to be dropped, it should have been made known.
As relative "insiders" we should not forget that many people don't have the time, habit or interest to do this kind of research. I think it is a breach of trust that Apple has never directly made this announcement or given people the opportunity to decide beforehand if giving up their PPC apps for a new OS is a worthwhile tradeoff.

  • Edge and Next are good for the corporations but are they good for the consumer?

Ok so I have never paid full price upfront for a phone!  Ever since my first phone from VoiceStream I have opted for what ever phone was "free" because way back then (I blush as I type) I actually thought the phone was "free!!!" Ah, to be naive again!! But as we all know the phones never were nor will they ever be free.
However I say programs like Verizon's Edge and AT&T's Next are good for the corporation if they weren't they would not exist.  The first reason I say this is because Edge and Next allow the cellular service provider to easily recoup the entire cost of the phone in a clear way unlike with subsidized phones that muddy the profit water.  For example, the Verizon 64GB iPhone 5s retails for $849.99, currently with a two year contract you pay $399.99 for that 64GB iPhone 5s.  The EFT for that phone is $350 (minus $10 per month of post paid service).  If you on the 15th the day after you got your phone you paid the EFT but kept service you only paid $749.99 for that $849.99.  Sure you still pay for service but you can leave when ever and Verizon cannot say hey you owe us $100 more for you phone.  Its yours and they can't take it back and the only way Verizon will get that $100 back is though another customer  that subsidized a much lower cost phone that at the completion of that contract Verizon will  more than recoup the cost of that lower priced unit. To top that off you could turn around and sell the phone for $800 go back to Verizon or another provider buy a $450 phone and break even.  I'm not suggesting that people do that or that it may prove to be a big hassle for some that went through all the trouble.  Its just a point to show that subsidized phones make the profits less clear for the service provider to see at first glance.
Second reason these programs are good for the corporation is they allow the service providers to get a better grasp on the true cost of maintaining their networks and providing us the consumer access to their networks.  Third reason it good for the corporation is the people that feel the need to upgrade every six months to a year are required to pay at least 50% of the retail cost of the phone at the same time they must surrender that device in exchange for the new device.  So the service provider then has the phone refurbished certified to be in "like new condition" and sell it again potentially making more than retail cost when the profits of both sales of the same handset are factored together.
That being said what will the impact of programs like Edge and Next have on cost of future cellular service plans and smartphones?  Over time will the service provider give us the best per line access fee (not likely but maybe)? Or will people upgrading their smartphones at faster intervals cause the cost of the smartphones to drop over time? What are your thoughts?

Go to the link I provided and click on "Check upgrade eligibility"

Some Internet providers that limit access to a single device at a time do so by the device's hardware MAC address. If your ISP is one of those, you may be able to substitute the MAC address of your AirPort Express base station for the computer. I would suggest that you contact them to find out if this is allowable.

  • Free Goods for sales order

There are two sales order type standard(A) and promotion(C) defined in our business.
when we create standard order it will goods automatically capture the free goods we maintaind.
However for promotion order, the system shows below message:
Free goods could not be determined for item 000001
Document category is not from sales order category (VBTYP <> 'C')
whether it is unable to use free goods for order type "C"?
    Please advice,
    Many thanks,
    Yang

    Dear Yadav
There are two order type ZAA1 - standard  ZAA2 - promotion
two item cateogry ZDC0 - standard  ZDC1 - free of charge.
I made a test to change the item category assignment as ZAA1 with ZDC1 and ZAA2 with ZDC0.
Still the free goods can automatically captured with standard order but promotion failed.
So I think the difinition of item category is no problem and it may related to sales order type.
My colleague told me it is unable to use free goods for the sales order which SD document category is not "C".
I try to change the SD document categ from I to C for promotion order and the free goods appear.
So the result is if i define the SD document category as I that I can't use function of free goods?
    Please advice
    Many thanks,

    Hi,
We have free goods which are delivered to the customers if they purchases 1 business kit get 2 different goods with each.

    1 qty product A (FREE)
    1 qty product B (FREE)
I understand that this free good set in VBN1. Beside that what else settings needed in order to populate automatically in SO the moment I created line item & qty for product business kit in SO. And this free goods should populate automatically in outbound delivery (VL01N). TQ

    Hi
Constraints of Free goods in R3
Free goods can only be supported on a 1:1 ratio. This means that an order item can lead to a free goods item. Agreements in the following form are not supported: u2018With material 1, material 2 and material 3 are free of chargeu2018 or u2018If material 1 and material 2 are ordered at the same time, then material 3 is free of chargeu2018.
Free goods are not supported in combinations with material structures (for example, product selection, BOM, variants with BOM explosion).
Free goods are only supported for sales orders with document category C (for example, not quotations).
Free goods are not supported for deliveries without reference to a sales order.
Free goods cannot be used in make-to-order production, third-party order processing and scheduling agreements.
If you defined a free goods for variants in a generic article (only SAP Retail), you can only process the variants in the purchase order and goods receipt individually (as single articles). In other words, you cannot process them using the generic article matrix.
These are Taken from SAP library and answers your query
But With IS Retail bouns buy schemes this is possible

  • Free Goods for QT order Types

Can I use automatic Free goods determination for QT order types.
however i am using it for OR right now and i have done the related configuration for QT as well but system is not detmining Free Goods for QT order types.
I have also maintained the below entry in "Determine Item Category for Free Goods Item"
Sa Type   ItCGr         Usg.     HLevelItCa  DfltC
    QT            NORM      FREE     AGN           AGNN

    Hi
Std SAP itself doesnt support Free Goods at quotation level
Standard SAP supports Free Goods at quotation level and hence the item categories AFNN and AGNN are provided in the standard SAP. But,  the Automatic determination of Free Goods is not possible for SD documents under category other than 'C'.
In your scenario...since the automatic determination is not possible, think about handling the functionality manually or through user exits.
    Thanks,
