Is "shutdown" = "stop Oracle services"?

When I perform a "shutdown" command from sydba:
Is this the same as if I do no shutdown but stop all the Oracle services e.g. (for XE):
XETNSListener
and
XEService
If it is more: What more?
Peter

No it is not the same. The listener and other Oracle processes like the agent are controlled differently than the database service. Please see your documentation.

  • How to stop Oracle services?

    I'm new to Oracle. I have installed Oracle 10g and I'm trying to apply patch 10.2.0.5. I'm getting the error that ORASLAX10.DLL is being used by another process. I have found out that SNMP is using that dll. I have restarted SNMP but it will use the dll right away.
    This is exactly what I have done before I start installing the patch:
    Installed Oracle 10g 10.2.0.4
    Restarted the server
    I think that I probably need to shutdown Oracle services and/or database. I have checked the Services in Administrative Tools and I don't see any services with name starting with Oracle. I have ran lsnrctl status and there is no listener. What other commands should I run to check/stop any Oracles services/database?

    Thanks for all the helps.
    Even though the Universal Installer windows was not responding at 100%, the patch installation seems to be completed successfully according to the log file.
    Where can I find a list of non-Oracle services used by Oracle? I still have not figured out which product of Oracle I installed is using the SNMP service.

    You can stop any service either
    a) using the services applet in the control panel window

    What OS?
    If it is new, why Oracle 8.0? It was never designed to work with any current operating system and I would be surprised if anything about it works.

  • Start/Stop remote oracle service

    Is there anyway I could start/stop a remote oracle service? Please provide source code. Thanks!

    HI,
    Suppose ur Database resides on X machine
    and u want to do remote login from y or z ,
    follow the conditions and steps below
    1) You need to install servermanager utility in ur remote machine
    2)then u need to run orapwd.exe utility on ur remote machine with following command
    "orapwd file=<full path name where u want to keep ur password file > password=<password> entries=<no of DBAs u want that password file to be accessed by>"
    after this u need to change Parameter in initialisation file , u will find one entry called "REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORDFILE=NONE" u have to change it to " REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORDFILE=EXCLUSIVE" u can also control multiple dabases from this same password file for that u will have to change above entry to REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORDFILE=SHARED,after this
    u need to pass following command "ALTER USER SYS IDENTIFIED BY <PASSWORD U LIKE > "
    this will change the password of both INTERNAL and SYS, now if u want to give multiple user access to this file then simply u grant two roles to them "ALTER SYSTEM GRANT SYSOPER,SYSDBA TO <USERNAME>" (INTERNAL AND SYS have these roles by default) this will add that user to that file now that user can also go to servermanager.Now u can Connect with any of the user which u have added in passwordfile in ur machine, and can remotely start or stop database with following Commands "STARTUP" "SHUTDOWN" respectively
    *Note -
    1)Location of password file is OS specific
    2)if ur using windows then u need to remove one entry in registry "DBA_AUTHORISATION =''

  • Oracle service wont stop properly via net stop

    Hi all,
    A bit of advice required please!
    We have 2 Oracle instances running on the same server, and every night the services are meant to shut down via a scheduled task from a batch file using net stop.
    Most of the time, one of the services fails to stop. The command line says oracle service could not be stopped. Sometimes, this seems to crash the service, ie: it appears started but doesn't work and needs re starting.
    To combat this, i am in early every morning to restart the services before people arrive! if someone could point me in the right direction as to what co6uld be causing this i would be gratefull!
    Thanks in advance.

    Well, for me the best way seems to contact with third party who installed everything and ask for their help.
    If You don't have knowledge regarding what is running and how it's running, then probably don't touch it.
    And by the way explanation for net stop failure could be this:
    When you do a "net stop" windows tries to stop the service. The default behaviour is to shutdown the related instance in immediate mode. But, there's a timeout defined by the ORA_SID_SHUTDOWN_TIMEOUT registry value. Till 9i it was 30 seconds. On 10g it's 90sec default. This means that when Windows tries to shutdown the service, in mode immediate, if in 30/90sec the instance isn't stopped it'll be shutdown abort.
    And fo rproduction database shutdown abort is probably not the best what You can perform each night.
    In alert.log You could see what exactly happens during net stop. alert.log is under bdump directory, if You can do sqlplus "/as sysdba" to the database and execute
    show parameter background
    then You will see there bdump is located on Your system.

    Also, do not confuse symptoms as all relating to the same problem.
    Exactly what are the sequence of events that results in the error? What client are you using? How does it connect (TCP or IPC)? If TCP, does it use a dedicated or shared server? Are there any related errors in the alert log? Is there a trace file created for your session? What is the exact o/s and Oracle versions you are using?

  • Stop all Oracle Services

    I am upgrading/patching my test 10g database. While upgrading it ask you stop all oracle services in order to continue the upgrade. I did that but it is still asking to stop all oracle services. Now what do I do, anybody have experience with that.

    First, make sure you don't have any thing automatically started, and don't use even sqlplus, as a client it will load several dll's and when the upgrade process starts it will mark several dll's as being used.
    I've been working with win2003 several upgrade processes, I don't know exactly why, but several dll's are still marked as being used, even if the host was restarted with the service set to manual start. The exact list of dlls that are in this situation correspond to those used by an oracle client.
    The workaround I found for my specific case was to rename the dll's and let OUI to write the new version.

  • Start and Stop Listener service -Oracle 10g

    Please, How I can stop and start listener service? My question is because I have "Oracle Instance" Oracle NT Service" in start up options in manually (i need to have them in way).
    Platform: Oracle 10g.10.2.0.1.0 / Windows XP Professional.

    If I understand your issue....
    C:\> net start <listener service name>
    and
    C:\> net stop <listener service name>
    where <listener service name> is exactly the service name you see in Services panel.

  • How to start and stop oracel services mannully

    I want to start oracle services (Database(SID) and listner) manually when i want to use database, by default i services are not started (as i set in service properties).
    I want to start them from some desktop shortcut to avoid going to control panel cuz i dont have rights to use control panel in my domain user.
    Regards,
    Aslam

    Please make .bat or .cmd files and those shot-cut.
    Example of script in bat file (to use net command).
    :dbstart.bat
    net start OracleServiceE1020
    :dbstop.bat
    net stop OracleServiceE1020
    Here OracleServiceE1020 is service name displayed Control Panel->Service->Propety->General->ServiceName. You could get it by 'net start' command with non argument, also.
    C:\>net start
    These Windows services are started:
    (snip)
    OracleServiceE1020
    (snip)
    The command completed successfully.
    Another example (to use oradim)
    :dbstart.bat
    oradim -startup -sid E1020 -starttype srvc,inst
    :dbstop.bat
    oradim -shutdown -sid E1020 -shuttype inst -shutmode normal
    oradim -shutdown -sid E1020 -shuttype srvc
    Here, E1020 is sid. Please execute oradim with no argument for your help.
    C:\>oradim
    ORADIM: <command> [options]. Refer to manual.
    Enter one of the following command:
    (snip)
    Startup services and instance by specifying the following options:
    -STARTUP -SID sid | -ASMSID sid [-SYSPWD pass]
    [-STARTTYPE srvc|inst|srvc,inst] [-PFILE filename | -SPFILE]
    Shutdown service and instance by specifying the following options:
    -SHUTDOWN -SID sid | -ASMSID sid [-SYSPWD pass]
    [-SHUTTYPE srvc|inst|srvc,inst] [-SHUTMODE normal|immediate|abort]

    What is the sequential Order to Start / Shutdown services, Listener & DB.
    Best regards,

    hi
    there is no hard coded rule on which service should be started first.
    the basic thing is concurrent manager uses database for starting, so i advice you the following sequence:
    1. start the database
    2. start the database listener
    3. Apache server
    4. forms server
    5. report server
    6. concurrent manager
    and shutdown in the reverse order

  • Stop weblogic services using StartStopServices.xml parameter leaves cmd.exe

    When using the "Start > All Programs > Oracle Business Intelligence > Stop BI services" function it calls the StartStopServices.cmd file. This file then references the StartStopServices.xml file using the following statement;
    <target name="stop_all" depends="set.is.stop.all, opmn.stop, wls.mgd.stop, wls.wait.mgd.shutdown, del.generated.managed.server.credentials, wls.stop, wls.wait.admin.shutdown, del.generated.admin.server.credentials">
         </target>
         <target name="set.is.stop.all">
         <property name="is.stop.all" value="true"/>
         </target
    The problem that I'm having is that when the weblogic services are successfully stopped, 2 cmd.exe windows are left open on the server. I've created a batch file to call the StartStopServices.cmd and added parameters such as
    Sleep.exe 30
    c:\windows\system32\TASKKILL.exe /F /IM cmd.exe /T
    Theoretically this should pause for a few, and then close the open cmd windows. However whenever the StartStopServices.cmd is called it closes the original command window before any statements are executed. So essentially I don't get to the taskkill or sleep parameters. I'm assuming that I need to edit the XML file somewhere to make it so it doesn't stop_all and close, but simply stops all and allows my added entries in the cmd windows to execute so ALL cmd windows are closed.
    I'm scheduling a backup using RMAN in NOARCHIVELOG mode, and need to stop the weblogic processes in order to complete this backup function. However I need to end these cmd windows otherwise over the course of time they will be cascaded everywhere. Has anybody accomplished this?

    Hope still you need a solution for your question.
    Follow these steps to achive as expected file using StartStopServices.xml, do let me know for any questions.
    File loc: MW_HOME\instances\instance3\bifoundation\OracleBIApplication\coreapplication
    1) I've added a new target attribute( as 'veera' to existing code) at the end of the tag
    <target name="stop_all" depends="determine.language, set.is.stop.all,find.or.get.credentials, opmn.stop, wls.mgd.stop, wls.wait.mgd.shutdown, del.generated.managed.server.credentials, wls.stop, wls.wait.admin.shutdown, del.generated.admin.server.credentials, veera">
    </target>
    2) Added new code as show below
    <target name="veera" if="wls.domain.exists" depends="wls.check.exists" description="Stop WLS">
    <echo message="Srini..." />
    <exec spawn="true" executable="cmd.exe" osfamily="windows" dir="${DOMAIN_HOME}/bin">
    <arg value="/c" />
    <arg value="taskkill /f /IM cmd.exe" />
    </exec>
    </target>
    If it is helpful, please mark as correct or helpful

  • Resilience in oracle service bus

    HI to all,
    I'm getting a problem because i have have a process in oracle service bus, that have a split-join and when a OSB server is shutdown the split-join stop and when the server are started up it don't restart i can i have resilience to overcome this problem.
    Best Regards

    Hi,
    Documentation states:
    Split-Joins provide support for propagating transactions. Operations set with a QoS of Exactly Once are executed in the transaction. Operations set with a QoS of Best Effort do not execute in the context of a transaction.
    Split-Joins do not handle transaction rollback in the case of exceptions. It is the responsibility service component that called the Split-Join to handle transaction exceptions and rollback.
    The last statement is quite difficult to understand... I believe you need to handle a fail in the caller of the split join and possibly do a retry from there... The split join won't restart by itself...
