Might to find out , is sim unlocked (I Phone 4 ) in South Africa ??
Because have sim locked in some other countries, and can I use any sim card when I oversea if I buy Iphonw4 in South Africa here ??

    I have an iPhone 4 that I bought in South Africa. It was an unlocked phone in South Africa and could be used with any carrier. I have moved to Toronto, Canada and the phone is locked here. I have contacted one of the network providers back home and they said it possibly could be that the frequency that Canada uses and the carriers use, are not supported with my South African iPhone 4. Is this correct or is there anything I could do (besides putting it on e bay or sending it back home) to use it here in Canada? I have been to numerous Apple stores here and in New York and they tell me the phone is locked and there is nothing they can do to assist. I don't want the phone to be used just for calling and texting, I want the phone to be able to function the way a normal iPhone should with all data and interent capabilities.
    Please help.
    I would highly appreciate some good advice.

    It is in Korean and I can read them and it clearly says, that they will unlock the iphone if and only if it's purchased in Korea, that it's active (in Korea they do allow temporary stop if you are on a vacation or what (but of course they can't unlock it if the line is inactive, you still keep the number and you just pay the minimal), where in U.S it's either use it or terminate it), you can still have them unlock for you even if you are still under contract.     As far as I know, all the iPhones bought online or in the Apple Store ar unlocked.
    Only carriers (e.g. T-mobile, Vodafone, O2) are able to lock a phone, Apple won't do that (afaik).
    This would mean that you shouldn't need to unlock your iPhone.

    Contact Orange in the UK and give them your details and tell them that you own the phone, but someone else pays the bill for you and that you would like to get the phone unlocked.  If you own the phone they may or may not unlock it for you, but they may need the request to come from the bill payer instead and it remains to be seen whether you will be eligible for unlocking.
    If not, then you really need to contact the bill payer and get them to contact Orange UK and put in the request for the phone to be unlocked.
    If not, then there is absolutely nothing that you can do.  You will have to continue to use your phone in the same way that you are already doing in South Africa - international roaming? 
    Either this, or you purchase a new phone that is unlocked and that you can use with local South African sim cards.
    DON'T even consider jailbreaking on any account - you will invalidate your phone warranty and if you have problems, Apple won't touch it and you could just end up with an unusable brick.

    The process is contact your network supplier .
    Ask IF they offer unlocking.
    IF yes request the unlock and pay any fees requested.
    Your network supplier then contacts Apple to request the White listing (Unlocking) of your phone on the iTunes servers.
    Apple do this -It takes anything from 3 days to several weeks to complete.
    On completion Apple confirms this back to your Network supplier (NOT YOU)
    Your network supplier contacts you via email or SMS inviting you to connect your iPhone with your computer via the supplied USB cable and launch iTunes and follow on screen prompts through to the "Congratulations your iPhone is now unlocked" screen.
    All these steps need to be carried out with the ORIGINAL SIM and by REGISTERED account holder used when setting up the phone.
    Once the Congats...... screen has been reached you can swap out the REGISTERED SIM and replace with a compatible SIM on another network.
    CAVEATS
    Only the original SIM and Account holder can initiate an unlock- If you bought the phone used/second hand you CAN NOT UNLOCK through official routes
    Once unlocked use of a Mobile Virtual Network SIM (For an unsupported carrier) may result in difficulties sending SMS messages.
    You may have to go into Setting /Network/Cellular/Cellular Data Network and enter the correct settings manually.
    Further caveat Cellular Data Network menu is SIM card dependant if its not supported you CAN NOT change the settings manually then you may need to contact the SIM card company - They can send a setup SMS if they support this process.

    Sorry, you can't. If your phone is carrier locked, you will need a sim card from that carrier, to activate it.

    Apple can do nothing.
    ONLY the carrier to shich it is loicked can unlock it.  Contact that carrier and ask if they offer this service and if you qualify.
    You should not leave your personal or iphone information ona  public forum.
