Is skype able to screen share to enable online tut...

Im hoping skype could provide the solution I'm looking for. I need to give several people online tuition with pc based applications. I need to see their computer screens and for them to see mine. I want to tell them step by step what to do and to watch them and guide them each step. Is skype able to do this via screen sharing?
Also if the person Im teaching is unable to follow an instruction can I control there computer via skype? - I may need this in order to show them certain steps or to check their system is responding as mine is.
Any advise on what to expect from skype and what skpe option I need would be most weclome

Skype has the screen-share feature built-in, issue a video calls on Skype, click "share screen" button.

  • Why would one of my MacBook Airs be able to Screen Share from work with the iMac at home while the other MBA not...?

I have 2 13-inch MacBook Airs. Also an iMac.
I could ScreenShare  from both laptops at work with the iMac at home.
Suddenly I can only do so from one MBA, which sees the iMac, no problem.
But the other MBA cannot sse it any longer.
The MBAs can see each other.
All running the same OS and Apps.
    Only difference is...
All have Multiple Apple IDs. ( 2 )
But one MBA was recently set to use the 2nd Apple ID as the main Apple ID
while the other MBA still uses the 1st, as does the iMac.
    What is happening...?

    That's the reason.
Unless you're using VNC or Apple Remote Desktop (which I assume you are not) both the MacBook Air and the the iMac need to be using the same iCloud account.
System Preferences>iCloud and make sure Back to My Mac is checked.

  • Since updating to Lion I can no longer screen share on Snow Leopard

    Hi all,
I'm hoping someone might have some insight to the problem I'm experiencing with Screen Sharing.  I have two macs that I use - one is a Mac Mini 2010 Server model running Snow Leopard.  The other is a MacBook that is running Lion.
Since updating to Lion on the notebook, I can no longer access screen sharing through the Mac mini to the MacBook (Can't see the Lion screen through the computer with snow leopard).  I AM able to screen share the other way (see the snow leopard screen through the macbook running Lion).
It's aggrivating, in as much as these computers are on two different floors of my company, and being able to see the screen makes life easier.
I should also point out that I am able to successfully share the hard drives / files between both computers going back and forth (Snow Leopard to Lion and Lion to Snow Leopard) - it's just the screen sharing that no longer functions.  When I attempt to access the other computer screen it will act like it is signing in but just hangs and does nothing.
I know there is probably much more information that someone will need to help me solve this, but I don't know where to look.  But I'm hoping that with at least this much information you might be able to tell me where to look to get this corrected.
    Much thanks.

    If you want.
or maybe install Snow Leopard using the disc it came on with my Mac and just set it up from a Time Machine Backup on my external hard drive (since it works under SL)?
Did you install Lion on an empty partition, or did you upgrade Snow Leopard?  If you upgraded, I'd not recommend erasing it, since your backups are apparently gone.  It's doubtful Snow Leopard will recognize them.
It's not just backups on the drive either, there are other important things on there, so why won't they show?
Mixing Time Machine backups and other data is not a good idea.  See #3 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  It sounds like the whole disk is corrupted.
I just really don't understand how this happened. Could it not be an issue with WD because they haven't issued firmware to support Lion yet?
If this is a simple external HD, connected by USB or FireWire, no, unless you installed some of WD's software on it.  That shouldn't prevent it from being seen at all, but anything's possible.

  • Screen share facility

I have owned a Mac Mini for some months and it is used solely for providing iTunes to my hi-fi system. I have recently purchased a new iMac and was expecting the two Macs to 'recognise' each other in my wireless set-up. This is not happening. What do I have to do to get the two computors to recognise one another? I want to be able to 'screen share' the Mac Mini on the new iMac. Any help will be gratefully received.

  • Screen share capability being removed for regular ...

Is screen sharing being removed for regular users?
I use this function once or twice a month (not enough to justify paying for the upgrade), is there no option for people like me going forward? Is there an alternative in/to skype that I should be investigating?

Hi, fintan, and welcome to the Community,
Not that I am aware of!  Here's the thing that causes a lot of confusion: you may share screens with one other Skype person, no charges, using a "free" Skype account (one that has no credit or subscriptions), when on an audio-only call.  However ...
If you are in the midst of a video call with another Skype user, and wish to share your screen, then Skype "sees" the screen share as another video feed or call participant.  I know it does not make sense!  So, if you are in the middle of a video call with another person and wish to share your screen, then simply turn off your webcam - then share your screen.
If you want to leave your webcam on and share your screen, then one participant on the call would need to have a Skype Premium subscription.
    Hope this helps!
    Kind regards,
    Elaine

  • Transfering files via screen share

I am able to screen share with my powerbook and my iMac. I tried to drag a folder with photo files on it from my iMac to the powerbook, but it didn't work. Any suggestions? Maybe easier to connect firewire, but wanted to try with screen share.

you can't do this with screen share, sorry. You can do it using file sharing if your computers are on the same network.

Turns out, it was the fact that Mac A, was trying to use a user name with a capital letter, instead of all lower case. I hadn't noticed

  • Screen share wirelessly to TV?

Think I know the answer as I can't find anything online but thought I'd ask on the off chance I'd missed something or misunderstood something.
I've seen that screen sharing to a TV is available if you have Apple TV connected.  What if you don't have Apple TV, are you able to screen share wirelessly if the TV and Mac are on the same network or not?
    Thanks for reading

Yes I know, the refurbished units went down to $59. Personally I prefer Apple refurbs due to getting a price break, items are virtually identical to new and come with the same warranty.

  • IChat video & screen share failure

using iChat 5.0.3 on a new iMac. I can initiate a request to share screen or video chat but fails to start. I am on 10.6.4. Under connection doctor, Router type light is YELLOW and states it is Symmetric and that the network's setup includes one or more devices that are not fully compatible with audio and video chatting.
What gives? It used to work fine on a previous iMac here. Sounds like a network issue but don't know where to start.

    Hi,
This is a link to a Site Called Port Forwarding and the info for TX 170 (they did not list the TZ 100)
Do this pages look similar to yours ?
The third Sonicwall pic shows the Firewall > Services page open (where Port Forwarding is done.)
We are not looking at this stage to Do Port Forwarding.
In Firewall > Advanced does it have UPnP ?
Are there any Port Forwarding settings made ?
    Are they for iChat ?
On your TZ 100 pages does it list an IP the ports are pointing to ? (Port Forwarding in many devices lists an IP (Computer) that has access to those ports - excluding others - possibly you new computer if it has s different IP)
I see here that it has Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) which can be a feature that gets in the way of iChat.
I cannot read anything there that says it does UPnP.
You may also need to look and what it is doing for VoIP.
VoIP is Voice over Internet (IP Phones and devices) It uses the SIP (Session Intiation Protocol) to connect either a device (phone or adapter) or in some cases software that acts like a phone over the internet.
However iChat also uses SIP to connect.
VoIP used to be pushed over port 5060-5063 and some devices still make sure all SIP data uses one of these ports (5060 is the most common).
iChat does not use port 5060 for SIP since iChat 4 came out and any redirection by the TZ 100 maybe the issue.
If you cannot find UPnP on any page on the device you will have to set Port Forwarding.
    You will need these ports
    ||iChat Ports||TCP||UDP||
    |AIM|5190|5190|
    |A/V|none|5678, 16393-16402|
    |Bonjour|5298|5297, 5298, 5353|
    |Jabber|5220,5222, 5223|none|
Note this is the iChat 4 and 5 Range
Add port 5060 UDP for iChat 2 and 3 and extend the group of 10 to 16384-16403 (20 ports)
iChat 4 and 5 also uses an undeclared Random port to do the Screen Sharing part and works if you can and do use UPnP (Or Port Mapping Protocol) to open ports in your routing device.
As you cannot set the random port you will not be able to Screen Share.

  • No Video, No Screen share, No idea how to use it.

I have only ever used iChat to msg back and forth with friends overseas. However, in the last few years I have converted my whole family to Apple and they want to start video chatting. I have read countless discussions and maybe I'm not looking in the right area because really I have no idea how to look for an answer when I not sure what the right question is.
So here is my question. How do I set this thing up? I do not know that much about routers and ports and all that but I will list what I have and maybe someone can help me out. I as well as the rest of my family have iChat4.0.7 and Running 10.5.6 for the OS. I am hooked up to the internet via wireless router Lynksys WRT350N. I know how to set the router up so that it's not broadcasting it's name and so it has a hefty password but that's about it. When it comes to ports and know where to type in TCP 5190, 5220, 5222, 5223, 5298 or UDP 5190, 5297, 5298, 5353, 5678, 16393-16402 I have no clue.
I log onto ichat via AIM and Google. For my Google it is connected to talk.google.com for the server out port 5223 and use SSL is checked as far as AIM the server it slogin.oscar.aol.com port 5190 and use SSL is checked.
By the way I can share screens with my wife in house on the same router but not otherwise.
I used to be able to share screens and log onto my edit suite across town when I had to remotely help another editor but now when I bought my new MacBook Pro I can not do that anymore. This might be a completely different topic that should be listed under a share screen discussion board... not found that one yet.
If more information is needed please let me know and I would be glad to give what I know to fix this. It really should not be this hard but for me it seems to have stumped me really good.

    Ok,
There are different methods of opening ports or allowing applications to use ports in a modem or router.
AS you want to Screen Share then it would be best to use UPnP (Universal Plug n Play).
Te Linksys will have this in the Adminstration page of it's set up page s that you can access in a web browser.
Use these Instructions only as far as gaining access then go to the Administration page/tab.
    Enable UPnP
Go to the Security tab and Allow it to Respond to Anonymous Pings
Lets us know when you have done that.

  • Can't screen share on local network

    Hi folks,
Seems like lots of problems are to be had with the iChat screen sharing. I've been looking through here and tried several options, but I don't seem to be able to get this working.
My MacPro 2x2.66 is sitting in the DMZ of my DSL Router and a brand new iMac is sitting behind the router's firewall, but on the same network. Both are running updated versions of Leopard. I've followed the instructions for NAT port forwarding on the router found here:
    http://web.mac.com/valsjo/personal/Start/Entries/2007/12/8iChat_screen_sharing_problemsolved.html
and also made the necessary changes to the Apple firewall (although I actually just have "accept all incoming connections" checked rather than listing iChat and my many other apps individually).
These two computers can't seem to screen share, however, with the dreaded "Screen sharing could not be established" error. Why is this happening when I'm on the same LAN?
Video chat appears to have similar problems.
    Thanks for your input,
    Aaron Genest

Have you tried Bonjour for screen sharing on your local network?
It works without problems on my local network, these are the settings that work for me:
Enable Bonjour messaging in iChat preferences>select use Bonjour instant messaging.
With iChat open select "enable screen sharing" from the top menu>video
In order to get it to work on my local network I had to disable screen sharing in Apple menu>System preferences>sharing.
The firewall settings are set to specifically allow the iChat application.
These settings should be set on all Mac's on your local network you wish to use iChat screen sharing with.
It might not work with a mac that has the file vault feature enabled.
My router settings are in default.

  • Screen Share - Change what to display & video quality

    Hi LCSS Team,
I have been playing around with screen share and have it working in collaborative (both ends can share/control their screens).
Upon initial selection of deskop/app/window, is there a way to allow users to change what to display without having to
    start/stop?
    Use case:
    - User A is viewing user B screen. User B would like to change view from desktop to a specific window.
Also, the screen share video feed is very pixelated. I have tried it multiple settings including what you guys sent
me. I am trying to get it to Skype like quality. Is that even possible?
    Thanks,
    Michael

    Hi octoguy,
iChat makes hardware and connection speed checks as it starts up.
This gives you the framerate and bit rate duirng a call.
Lets say that your processor gives your iChat 15 fps
This will be the rate that you will then see to a another Mac.
The same computer is likely to get 10 frames per sec to a PC.
This is some part due to the PC putting a fair amout of effort into producing a clear detailed pic.
On some PCs this setting for the video pic is so high that the audio will drop out completely.
The cure is to bring the PC preview to the front (tabs)
Then click on the small icon that appears to the right and adjusting the slider that appears to the left.
This will incease the frame rate and bit rate from the PC. It makes the video look smoother although the actual quality has gone down (you may not be able to judge this quality difference by eye)
As general rule you will get about 2/3rds of the normal Mac to Mac framerate shown in the Connection Doctor. It also seems to take about 50% more Connection speed to get the same quality video.
So Mac to Mac min is 100Kbps where as Mac to PC will need about 150kbps.
The quality drop from 15 frames a sec to 10 frames a sec does make the video generally more blocky but does also depend a fair bit on the processor power of the PC and the camera used.
I know that sounds a little vague but there are really many variables that can be a factor.
