Is Snow base station (M8440, dual ethernet) capable of WPA2 ??

Am about to buy an Airport base station (snow/M8440) off eBay. Does anyone know if this base station is capable of WPA or WPA2? I will be using it with a Titanium G4 867mhz and 10.4.9.
I probably won't buy it if it is only capable of WEP. Thanks.

No, the snow AirPort base station (ABS) is not capable of WPA nor WPA2.
The snow ABS only does 64 and 128 bit WEP.

Oops. Messed up Snow Base Station system that worked..

My Snow Base Station ran fine with the Pacbell ADSL modem for seven years.
Had three laptops and tower at home wireless with no issue.
Yesterday, after getting Road Runner cable modem installed, tried to use it with the cable modem - had disasters continually so tried to go back to the old ABC plus ADSL modem.
1. My airport base station shows up in Airport bar.
2. Shows up in Airport Administration utility.
3. have the Pacbell domain numbers and all of that in the TCP/IP window.
However,
Still no internet and when I launched Airport Setup Assistant, the base station shows up as a network but it doesn't show up other than that and I still can't on the internet.
Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated.
So furious I messed this up; should have stayed with the Pacbell modem.

I too messed up my once working network. I have an eMac that was connected (hardwired) to my Snow Base and an iBook G4 that was connecting wirelessly. Both could access the internet just fine.
Then I switched the Airport Base out for a D-Link wireless router (for some reason my wife's PDA couldn't connect to the Airport network, but can with the D-Link) That was, anyway, for about 1 day, which is when the D-link stopped working. I tried to go back to the Snow base, but now I can't get it to work.
I can connect (using PPOE), if I hardwire my eMac right to the DSL modem (Verizon Westell Wirespeed), but not when it's going through the Snow base. Everything is hooked up correctly cable wise, my passwords and user names are correct. But when the ABS is hooked up to the modem, it can't connect. The ABS also shows up just fine as a wireless network on my iBook. I can access it via Airport Admin, but when I try to get online, it just says "looking for PPOE Host" but never connects.
I'm pretty sure I've got it configured correctly, Airport is using PPOE and the Emac is set to DHCP. I basically just reverted to the settings I had when it was set up last.
I'll try the power cycling, hopefully that works, if not...

Can't configure Snow Base Station - error updating configuration.

I recently found a cheap Airport Snow Base Station to use on a trip I'm taking next week. I'll be at a lake house with no broadband, only dial-up capability. I thought if I could at least go wireless, it would be more bearable, so I got the Snow Base Station since my Express nor my Extreme Base Station have modems.
I downloaded the Airport Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow, and did a hard reset on the base station. It shows up in the utility as 00-03- etc. with IP address of 192.42.249.13. When I click Configure, it says the base station has been reset and is currently not configured. I click OK to upload software to the base station, it asks for my administrator password then after about 12 seconds, it comes back and says "An error occurred while updating the configuration."
Any suggestions? It's connected via ethernet to the LAN port, it says the base station version is currently 4.0.2.

I've managed to resolve the error code by the following:
1. Turn Off Airport Card
2. Unplug Power Cable to Time Capsule
3. Disconnect Ethernet Cables
4. Wait 30secs
5. Plug in Power Cable to Time Capsule and allow unit to power up.
6. Connect via Ethernet to the ethernet ports on the Time Capsule
7. Airport Utility should know locate, but importantly allow you access to configure Manual set-up

Snow base station and windows vista

I have a Snow airport base station which has been happily sending its wireless signal to my 4 Macs for the past several years without any significant problems. Recently, I came to inherit a Windows notebook running Vista that I cannot connect to my wireless network despite my best efforts. The notebook is able to see the network without difficulty but cannot connect wirelessly to the internet.
I also have an Airport express which I use to extend to range of the network, but this is not recognized by the notebook either.
I have been able to connect this notebook without difficulty to a wireless network at my local Apple store, as well as at my neighbors, where at each an Airport extreme serves as a router.
I suspect that the Vista notebook is not recognizing the Snow airport router and that if I want to connect to the internet, I will ultimately have to upgrade to the Airport extreme. I post this to see if anyone has had a similar problem and can give directions for a fix before I buy an Airport extreme as a last resort.

Hello adharris. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I suspect the problem is with wireless encryption. I assume, since your using a Snow base station, that your Snow's wireless network is encrypted using WEP ... correct? If this is so, please try (temporarily) disabling wireless encryption and then see if you your Vista laptop can connect. If the laptop can now connect, you will need to provide the Equivalent Network Password to the PC in order for it to connect. (ref: AirPort Extreme: Getting an equivalent network password)
A few things to consider about the Dual Ethernet (aka Snow) AirPort base station (ABS):
o The latest firmware for this base station is v4.09.
o There is no WPA support. Only the older WEP wireless encryption protocols are supported.
o The Snow's WAN port is only 10 Mbps. If your ISP connection is faster than that, the WAN port will limit the connection speed.
o The Snow will only operate in the 802.11b radio mode which is limited to a theoretical maximum of 11 Mbps.

Snow Base Station will no longer be seen...

Hi folks,
I was given an old Snow ABS and tried to set it up to work with my G4 titanium running 10.4.7 at home.
- When I got it, I could see it on the list of airport networks, but couldn't log on because of I didn't know the old password.
- I did a soft reset and used the Apple Airport Utility to update, and reconfigure the settings to my own specification. It said I was successful and I see the Base Station across the ethernet, but I can no longer see it across my laptop's wireless no matter what I do.
- I have powered everything down and brought them back up in sequence from the cable model to the airport, to the computer.
- I have experimented with different channels and settings and nothing seems to work.
THE BUGGER IS I SAW IT BEFORE I RESET IT AND RECONFIGURED THE ABS.
Any thoughts???

Snow base station next to imac - yet not getting full strength reception?

I have my snow base station sitting about 1 foot from my imac, yet only 3 out of the four bars are dark. Meaning I'm not getting full reception? Why is this is? I can't say I notice a significant difference in internet usage, but every little bit helps. I only have a cordless 5.8 ghz phone and my Harmon Kardon soundsticks speakers on the same desk. But from what I understand, 5.8 ghz are not supposed to interfere with cordless internet.
Any suggestions?

Duane, I've tried every channel and no improvement. The only thing I have discovered is if I hold the base station in my hand and lift it up above my head - I get full signal strength. However, if I hold it up and place it against the wall (as though I were to hang it), it drops back down to three bars.
Do you think if I got the newest airport express, my signal strength would be better? Or do you think a more insulated ethernet cable would help? Or could it be my imac airport card?

Snow Base Station - No IP Address

I have a snow base station that cannot seem to get an IP address from my cable modem. I've tried restarting the base station. Restarting the modem. Restarting both. Hard restart of the base station that put it back to factory settings. It only gets a 169... IP address. The Graphite gets a valid IP address immediately. The snow has previously been used with a DSL modem, so I know that the hardware should work. I have it plugged into the WAN ethernet port (the one with the funny dot-circle), but I have checked it on the other port just in case. Any ideas as to what else I can try? Thanks.

I would also make sure that the DNS for the AirPort is set to the same IP address as the one the cable modem. The AirPort has to pull an IP address from the ISP's DHCP server to work properly.

IMac to Snow Base Station

Hi, I have a G5 iMac and a Snow Base Station that runs a closed wireless network. I cannot get the iMac to connect wirelessly but I can use an ethernet cable to the base station and I'm online instantly. I have the correct password and network name but the iMac either times out trying to validate it or it simply is denied. Any thoughts?

Ok I set it to no password and i still can't connect. It doesn't time out but it doesn't allow the connection. I should add that my laptop (g4 powerbook running 10.4.11) can connect to it every time. In fact, I have to use the laptop to administer the base station because I can't even get the Airport Utility in Leopard (v 5.3.2) to find the base station. If I attempt to join the network via the Network system preference pane by using the Airport tab on the left side and entering the network name and no password, the Leopard machine is denied instantly as if it didn't even try to connect.
Update:
I found this forum thread and downloaded the Airport Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow and now I can see the base station in that application. I still cannot join the base station's network from the Network connection dialog but I can configure it via that app.

Apple TV vs Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (Simultaneous Dual-Band)

I have an original 40 GB TV that connects to my new ( (latest model)) Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (Simultaneous Dual-Band) (MC340LL/A). Since upgrading to this new AEBS, my TV will not connect via its internal Airport card. The TV will "see" my "Home-LAN" but always gives the error message, "Connection Failed".
I have tried to Reset and Restore the TV, even the "Restore to Factory Defaults"! I have changed the security settings on my AEBS from an Open Network (no security) to WPA/WPA Personal, WPA Personal. I have changed the "Radio Mode" from "802.11a/n - 802.11b/g" to "802.11a - 802.11b/g". The TV will not connect! I now have it connected to my "Home_LAN" via Ethernet, and it works fine.
Anyone with a similar problem and a suggestion or solution? Do you think the internal Airport Card is the problem? Thanks

As suggested in another discussion area, (AirPort), I reset the AEBS to factory defaults. On the TV, I went to >Settings>General>Network>Configure Wireless>Wireless Networks. I could then see the generic "Apple Network xxxxx" on the TV. From my MacBookPro, I verified that I could connect to the TV by launching iTunes and noting that the TV was now visible in the "Devices" menu. Went back to the AEBS and ran through the "Setup" routine. I did NOT use the "Previous Settings" but instead, saved the old settings profile, created a new wireless network and new settings profile and enabled WPA2 Personal encryption. I then went back to the TV and went through the "Settings" routine again (as noted above). This time, after entering my WPA2 password, the TV connected to the network and problem was solved. Port Mapping problem with a Snow Base Station

I wish to enable port mapping with my Airport Snow Base Station. (SBS) I am using an Earthlink Efficient Stream 5667 DSL modem to my SBS. I am running firmware version 4.0.9 and connecting with 10.4.3.
So -- enabling port mapping requires that the IP address on my 10.4.3 computer doesn't change, and that I then map the ports. However, I can not manually assign an IP (say 10.0.1.201) as my 10.4.3 can not connect using either "DHCP with manual address" or "manually" (where the router and subnet mask match the DHCP assignment)
What should I do?

Do not use the "DHCP with manual IP address" - that is a mode not supported by most networking devices on the market.
What you should do: on your Mac, open System Preferences->Network->Show Airport->TCP/IP tab. Select to "configure manually". Then enter the following parameters:
- IP address: 10.0.1.201
- subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
- router/gateway IP: 10.0.1.1
- DNS IP: use either 10.0.1.1, or enter the actual IP address(es) of your ISP's domain name servers

MacBook problems with Snow base station - other laptops work fine

Hi,
I just purchased a new MacBook to replace an iBook G4 800.
My snow base station works fine with the old iBook G4 (which has an extreme card) and with a borrowed PowerBook G4 Aluminum 1.5 GHz (also extreme card) but will not work with my new Mac Book. Every time I try to connect - I receive an error "There has been an error accessing "my name" 's network. Sometimes it will connect, other times (most of the time), it will not.
My MacBook connects fine to my neighbors Linksys access points and our work Lucent access points (which are b also - snow is b).
I did a search and am reading other people having similiar problems. I was wondering if anyone has resolved their problems. I spent 2 plus hours on the phone with Apple yesterday. They are placing the blame on the older base station (snow) but it is obvious that snow is working fine for other computers.

I am still a little confused. I can be 2 feet from my base station and will keep hitting "try again" when trying to access my network and will get "an error has occurred" many times and eventually it will connect and I will have an incredibly strong signal. My MacBook will continue to have a great strong signal until it goes to sleep and then I will have a difficult time connecting again. My neighbors base station is a weak signal and I can easily join their network. Every time I connect, I have problems but once connected, it is great.
I guess it can be interference but I am now wondering if it is related to the snow/graphite base station only. This laptop has no problems joining other b base stations.
I spent hours on the phone with an Apple wireless support specialist the other night. He wants me to try an Extreme base station. He didn't indicate that he was aware of any MacBook problems (and he mentioned interference and we setup my laptop to only join my network and it didn't make a difference).
More to come.... IF anyone switched to a Extreme Base Station and that worked fine - please let me know. Though I sort of resent having a functional b base station that works with every other laptop and have to spend $200 towards another base station because of a new laptop.

Can't configure my Snow base station after Hard Reset

Hello -
I am having trouble configuring my Snow base station after a hard reset.
Airport Admin Utility will not see or connect to it.
I get the error:
"The AirPort admin utlity was unable to
read the configuration file of the selected
base station.
An error occurred while reading the configuration."
any suggestions?
I need to completely erase it and give it a different configuration altogether.
Any help would be appreciated.

I can only offer sympathies. I have exactly the same problem.
A question:
1) After a hard reset of the ABS according to the procedures in Articles 106602 & 106685, at step 14 does Airport Admin(AA) find your ABS?
(I can reliably get to this point, however loading default software fails. I noticed that the Airport ID is zeroed! )
2) In AA have you tried connecting to 10.0.1.1 using your ABS password?
3) Can you create a c2c network? (I can connect my iMacs together reliably, so it is not a radio noise issue.)
I firmly believe this is a s/w issues somehow related to the recent upgrades. I only recenly bought my ABS, after replacing my Graphite for similar reasons. This is becoming unreasonablely time consuming and expensive.
I know this is a bit 'blah, blah', but I'm scratchng around too and would appreciate help! (I had to drill a hole in the wall to get 'hardwired' to the net, so I could get on here, this is not good!)

Snow Base Station Connection Flashes In and Out

I just got a 'new' snow base station, and once I set it up, its connection cycles in and out and in and out. AP Grapher shows spikes in noise, signal, quality, everything. Connection last less than a second, drops for maybe a full second, connects again for less than a second, ad nauseam. The old, graphite one, is fine. I checked to make sure the new one is on the same channel, same multicast rate, same interference robustness, etc. Everything is the same except that the snow base station has a 128 bit password. What's going on with this thing?

Woops. Should have gone through all the settings. In case it helps anyone else - resetting and resetting-up does not remove Access Control Settings. My computers weren't on the authorized list.

Dial up with snow base station

Is it possible to hook up dial up to the snow base station and make it wireless? Thanks in advance.

Did you use the AirPort Admin Utility to configure the modem? Open the Utility and click on the Internet tab.
If your Mac is connecting wirelessly, the Mac's Network preference pane must be configured to use AirPort.
