Is Snow Leopard already set up on a new MacBook Air?

I just bought a MacBook Air from an online Apple store in Korea. I haven't opened the computer yet or the Snow Leopard operating disc. When I open the MBA, will it already have the operating system installed? Or do I have to install it myself? Also, is there only one version of the Snow Leopard disc? I am asking because I cannot understand Korean and if it opens up in the Korean language, I am stuck. If I can select English I will be OK. I have also bought the superdrive that goes with the MBA. If I have to install the OS myself is it straightforward? Or will I run into difficulties because I bought everything from a Korean online store?

I don't know what OS was in place when your MBAir was packaged for retail sale.
If the box has a Disk that appears to have been 'dropped in' the box, outside of original packaging then it is coming with Leopard installed and you can easily upgrade it to Snow Leopard with the upgrade disk.
The original restore DVD's will be gray in color and located inside the packaging with a few other odd's and end's. You may never need to use them because the OS is already on your drive.
Since you've already purchased an external superdrive you should be able to boot from the superdrive by holding down the Option key during boot and upgrade your OS to SL if required, then go up to the Apple menu at the top of the monitor and choose Software Update. Get the updates, including the 10.6.1 update, let them install, then use 'Disk Utility' to Repair Permissions on the hard drive.
New machines are pretty straight-forward to set up.
When a Mac is first turned on it will ask you to specify what language to use. First thing. Just choose English.

  • I just restored my 13" MBP i5 at the apple store to the newest version of Lion after issues with a previous Time Machine backup from Snow Leopard- this time I created a new account and just ported files and folders, and now MS Office doesn't work. Help?

I just restored my 13" MBP i5 at the apple store to the newest version of Lion after issues with a previous Time Machine backup from Snow Leopard- this time I created a new account and just ported files and folders, and now MS Office doesn't work.
^^ that's the main problem. Here's the full history.
I bought a new 13" i5 MBP, early 2011 edition. I had an old white Macbook 2.14 ghz core2duo on Snow Leopard. I attempted to port over my time machine backup, but encountered problems in that my User was inaccessible from the new computer after the import finished, and I had to go in and change the root password, etc, and for some reason or another, I couldn't install any programs at all from that administrator's account. By "couldn't" I mean I could install them, but upon installation they would never boot. So, I took it to the apple store and did a clean install from the most up to date Lion OSX. Then, I created a brand new admin account, instead of trying to import the old one, and things seemed great. Then, I just imported my old files from the TM backup, but not any system settings, permissions, or user data. Just my Docs, pics, vids, apps, and itunes stuff.
Here's where things get weird again. I imported this stuff under the name "old", but all of these folders have a red negative sign on them, marking them as restricted. So, from my main admin account, I cannot even peruse these folders. Since I didn't import user data, I can't sign in to the "old" account to change permissions. I already tried to change the permissions from system preferences, but that didn't change anything. And now, for whatever reason, of all the apps that were imported then, MS Office is the only set of apps that does not work. When I click on it, it just says there was a problem and asks if I'd like to send a report to apple. I tried reinstalling it to no avail. I'm an English student, so i really need access to Word. Can anyone help? The Apple store is a major detour for me and would like to fix this issue myself.

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

  • I have leopard OSX (10.5.8) on a macbook air. want to upgrade to snow leopard (eventually to ML). how? when no disk drive or mac store. thanks

I have a macbook air running on OS X 10.5.8. I wish to run on the new mountain lion. However because i am on leopard, i have no mac store and because i have an air, i have no disk drive. how do i upgrade to snow leopard or lion without these?
Any help would be greatly appriciated. if i've missed something basic im very sorry

Apple confirmed the removal of the software this afternoon, and said that customers can still purchase a copy from its online store's telesales agents.[1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775.]
    Non-Apple sources for Snow Leopard:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
If you call Apple then you should ask about purchasing the Lion USB Flash Drive installer if you want to skip over buying Snow Leopard.
Be sure your model can run Mountain Lion:
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

    Hello,
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It looks like they do still have it:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
And it's been reported that if you have a MobileMe account Apple will send one free.
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.

  • New MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros supporting Snow Leopard?

Do the new MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros support the Snow Leopard OS? I have been trying to install 10.6 but the screen is blacking out after install for the Air and I cannot even boot into an external drive for the Pro. Any suggestions or help?

    Kada,
A Mac's Firmware is designed to reject the installation of a Mac operating system that predates the version and build the unit originally shipped with. There is a good reason for it, as earlier versions would unlikely be in anyway compatible with the hardware. An OS that predates the hardware would not have the requisite drivers for the built-in peripherals, such as the graphics subsystem and ports. The safetey measure prevents Apple from having to deal with the potential nightmare of users having problems they are not prepared to alleviate.
You may be able to physically create a working situation by running an earlier build using a VM layer, such as using Parallels or Fusion, but Snow Leopard's single user licensing doesn't lawfully permit it. Snow Leopard's Server edition does however. Then again, it still wouldn't solve your scenario, as you would be running Lion or Mountain Lion to support the VM.

    All,
A very interesting NOTE to this thread. In order to try and get the "ignore permissions" box to show up in GET INFO (so I could execute Matt the Magician's solution to file sharing issues)-- I ran the terminal command for disabling ACLs on my internal HD / start up disk (as indicated in the linked thread to BDAqua's forum).
Although I understand that this was useless for disabling permissions on the start up disk (as everyone here pointed out) and allowing me to see the "ignore permissions" check box - somehow it did seem to fix my file sharing problem...and that was the root problem I wanted solved in the first place! After doing the terminal command and a quick reboot, I went in and tested file sharing on the chosen directory and I can create new files or work from existing files in the directory, with both users being able to modify / and save from both machines and each machine sees the revisions and can build from them. Bottom line - I'm stoked and want to thank everyone for their help.
The only other tweak I made was going over to my wife's machine and instead of using her log in / password, I just used my name and password to connect to my main machine that was sharing directories. Maybe that's what fixed the problem or the ACL disable but either way...I'm up and running the way I want to be.
Hope this thread helps anyone else who has these file sharing / permissions issues with Leopard. Especially for anyone wanting to do such a simple file sharing set up between 2 computers. I wish I understood exactly which tweak fixed the problem, but at least it works the way I want now.
So happy to be done w/this one!
Thx everyone. Any additional input on what solved it is welcome, so my curiosity is quelled...

  • I just bought a new macbook air and i want to set it up with a new apple id. Can I delete my old one?

I just bought a new macbook air for college and I am currently setting it up. I have had a long time apple id as a kid, but I want to set up a fresh, new one for this computer. However, the email I want to use is already associated with my old apple id, can I delete this account completely to "restart"?

No, that is not possible as well as not preferred. If you setup a new Apple ID your previous purchases, downloads, etc. done with the old Apple ID will not longer be available unless you re-purchase them using the new Apple ID.

I have a new MAcBook Air and my photos don't fit on the internal hard drive.  I want to store my photos on an external hard drive which I will connect to my Air when using Iphoto.  How do I set an external hard drive as the default drive in Iphoto?

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Are you wanting to import iCal to the MacBook Air. Since iCloud doesn't work with 10.6 OSX you probably don't have any data in iCloud yet?
