Is software update different than iPhone software update?

Is the v2.0.x iPod Touch update different than the iPhone version in terms of how it authenticates to networks? At work, an iPhone can authenticate just fine, but my iPod Touch (@ v 2.0.1) can not. It spins and spins saying it is connecting, but never does. Thx.

You have to do more than just restart to apply a firmware update.

99.9% of the time, the cause of this issue is the fact the phone was jailbroken/hacked to unlock it for use on networks other than the network the phone was originally locked to. Apple maintains a database of officially unlocked iPhones, and when Apple's servers detect phones such as yours, activation stops & you get the message you got.
So, you need to get a sim card from the carrier the phone was originally locked to, or get it officially unlocked, if you want to activate it. Because it appears that it was not officially unlocked.
Apple has started to get "tough" with hacked iPhones, & simply won't permit their activation.

It will let you know there is an update and ask if you want to update.

On your phone go to Settings > General > Software Update.

Updated 2.2 Iphone Software and lost all contact information! HELP!!

I have the old 8G Iphone and updated the new 2.2 Iphone software and lost all my contact information,video, pics,etc. I tried to hit restore and it did not bring anything back. Does Itunes save info as a back up? HELP!!

In regards to contact info, the iPhone is designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer.
With XP, this can be with Outlook 2003 or 2007, or with the address book used by Outlook Express, which I believe is named Windows Contacts.
Photos captured by your iPhone should be imported by your computer, as with any other digital camera.
Music and video transferred to your iPhone should remain in your iTunes library on your computer, and the same for photos that were transferred to your iPhone from your computer.
iTunes creates and maintains a backup of your iPhone, which is updated if needed as the very first step during the sync process - if any of the data included with your iPhone's backup has changed since the last sync.
The backup stores data such as most iPhone settings, email account settings, SMS messages, notes created with the Notes application, recent calls, call favorites, contact info, and photos that were captured by your iPhone, but it isn't a good idea to depend on your iPhone's backup only for the last two. As already provided, contact info is designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer, and photos captured by your iPhone should be imported by your computer - as with any other digital camera.
You updated to 2.2 from which firmware version, and did you sync your iPhone with iTunes immediately before installing firmware update 2.2 to update your iPhone's backup if needed?
You can try restoring your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup. This will completely erase your iPhone followed by re-installing the current firmware version, which is 2.2. After 2.2 is re-installed, you will be prompted to restore your iPhone from your iPhone's backup, which is the default selection. After your iPhone is restored from your iPhone's backup, this must be followed by a sync with iTunes to re-transfer your selected iTunes content from your computer to your iPhone along with any photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone.
If your contact information and photos that were captured by your iPhone are not restored from your iPhone's backup and you didn't sync contact information with a supported application on your computer and you didn't import the photos that were captured by your iPhone, this data will be lost.

Iphone locking up after software update. "verifying iphone software"

This is the second time this problem has happened. I plugged a nearly fully charged iPhone into my computer. It asks if I want to download the newest software. I stupidly say yes, and it backs my iphone up, installs software but gets frozen on the screen that says "verifying iphone software" for hours (it's been 6 hours now and counting). Why does it do this every time? If I disconnect the iPhone, reboot and plug it back in, it tells me I must restore it to factory settings. Fine. Restore done, and again, stuck on "verifying iphone software". I cannot keep waiting for 3 days for an appointment at the Apple store everytime my iphone needs updating. Any suggestions for preventing this from happening again are welcome.

There have been a few other reports of failure to charge, and most have
resolved themselves (mysteriously) after leaving it plugged in to computers
for a really long time, or after a hard reset.
I haven't seen any one post that a restore fixed this, so I wouldn't rush into that.

All your TV Shows should be safely synced with your iTunes Library on your computer, so it is impossible to lose them.
However, as part of the update process, iTunes will do a backup of the phone first, and restore everything to how it was after the update.

Internet Connect Problems Since Updates.different than the "settings" issue

Since the last couple of updates I have had nothing but trouble with my wireless connection on my MacBook Pro 104.11. I fixed the last problem but now any time I shut my computer off, I have to reset my wireless router (NetGear) in order to connect with airport. Otherwise it tells me it senses the router but not the internet.
I have 2 other computers running wirelessly and no such problems with them. They properly connect as soon as they are turned on.
Any ideas?

Another thing that has worked for many is to just copy/duplicate that Location in Network>Location>Edit Locations..., then use that one.
It's easy to switch locations under the Apple icon.
Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers for the Interface you're using...

Then Apply. These are safer/faster than most ISP's DNS numbers, and have been patched against DNS poisoning.

DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.254.3.183 behind the scenes.
And some Routers/Modems & Macs don't communicate it well.
WE have more if that doesn't work.

anybody tried to install it? what happen, will there be 2 photo editor? my current photo editor version is 23.0.1.A.0.1, and when i opened the file, it asks to install as new app, instead of an upgrade

I broke my iPhone 4 that has a sim card in it.
I wanted to update my iPhone 3G (I don't think it is a 3GS).
I plugged it into iTunes.
It took all day for it to back up, then an "error" occurred and it won't allow me to restore factory settings, and it doesn't work.

Unlock iPhone 5s different than iPhone 5?

As I understand it, phone companies are now supposed to unlock their phones for customers as per a recent law. I'm attempting to unlock an iPhone 5 (which has passed any sort of period of contract) that is locked to Sprint. Sprint says they can unlock the iPhone 5s for domestic and international use but only unlock the iPhone 5 for international use. It is not a Sprint branded phone, so I'm not sure this is the final word on the subject. Any info on the topic would be greatly appreciated.
Are they unlocking the GSM but not the CDMA?

IPad mail foreign language - different than iphone

The same message will render properly in iphone mail and Apple mail but not on ipad. The language is Czech.

Sorry for the delay in appreciating you response - I was on a flight to Europe.
I now have iPad , iPad 2 and 3 iPhones 4. The mails get properly rendered on iPhones, but on neither iPad. Switching the language has no effect (I believe it is for the input and system menus).

IPhone 3G - unable to update iPhone software due to syncing + back-up process always crashed half way.

- I'm having problem to update my current iphone software (3.1.3 version) to the latest version due to my itunes + iphone unable to complete the syncing + back-up process.
- It always crashed + syncing half way and sadly it always happened after waiting for couples of hours (sometimes more than 6 hours).
- I have tried it soooooo many times but again it still disappoint me.

What "latest version" are you attempting to upgrade to? The iPhone 3G can use up to iOS 4.2.1; any later version will not install. And you might want to stick with 3.1.3 as many people report unsatisfactory performance of iOS 4 on the iPhone 3G.
If you're sure you want to upgrade, and you're sure you are attempting to install iOS 4.2.1 and not some later version, then try a factory restore operation on your phone first, then try again to update the iOS:

If that doesn't work, you might want to call your local Apple Store to make an appointment at the Genius Bar. They'll probably be happy to help you perform the software update right in the store. If you use a laptop to sync your iPhone, bring that (and the USB charge/sync cable) with you.
