Is Solaris 10 free?

Several months ago, near all software products from Sun, had the word free
Now, anyone of these products doesn't show the word free.
If I buy a dell Server, can I download Solaris 10, install it, and use it comercially.
Reading the entitlement, it isn't clear to me that the Solaris 10 is free.
The doument is: http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/popup.jsp?info=17

Hello,
it's indeed vey confusing.
To obtain patches (even security) or use Solaris commercially a Support Contract is required.
http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/popup.jsp?info=17
http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/licensing/policies.xml
http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/licensing/sla.xml
This is a quote from the first link:
"In order to use the Solaris operating system for perpetual commercial use, each system running Solaris must be expressly licensed to do so. An Entitlement Document comprises such license and is delivered to you either with a new Sun system or from Sun Services as part of your service agreement. Customers who did not receive an Entitlement Document with their new Sun system or through their service agreement must register each system running Solaris with Sun."
The last time this Entitlement Document was sent after the download, was when Solaris 10 3/05 (GA) was released.
Without registering a system, the Sun Update Manager (SUM) didn't allow to download patches. This means if you ever used SUM (without a Patch Proxy) your system is registered. Now a Sun Online Account without a service contract isn't suficient to download patches.
I'm not aware of any press release for these license changes.

  • New to solaris what should I be downloading solaris 10 or opensolaris?

well I have some experience with redhat but want to learn solaris as, well I really will never be able to get a linux/unix position if I only know one. hmm so I started looking around and got confused by the many versions now available of solaris. so after bout an hour is seems like...
    1) the solaris 10 os is released for free
    2) there are multiple solaris's based off this code but the one solaris is pushing is the opensolaris 2008.05.
in my mind I figure that solaris loosely relates to redhat then and opensolaris loosely relates to fedora.
    so here are my questions.
I see solaris is "free" but I can't figure out exactly what that means. I know for instance that me sitting at home at night learning will not be able to call or email sun for support (too bad that would be sweet). but once installed can I get applications, use the sun software installation system (whatever would be like yum to redhat) to get software, will it be from a repo sponsored by sun? also how would I update the system. for instance I see a new version of solairs will be out in late october. do I have to do a complete reinstall or can I just plop in a new cd and hit "upgrade" (or something of that nature). basically I guess I am saying what am I missing by getting solaris free without support. is it just tech support or is it updates and software.
secondly, would opensolaris be a better option. the reason I am apprehensive is because based on some reviews I have read it is not supported by much hardware and is buggy. I really don't want to waist time downloading and installing this if regular old solaris 10 is the better option. thanks you much for helping a newbie out. I have a seconds pc waiting for this and remember it is basically so I can get up to speed so my solaris unix will be on par with my quite limited linux experience. thanks again...

I see so>night learning will not be able to call or email sun for support (too bad that would be sweet). but once installed can I get applications, use the sun software installation system (whatever would be like yum to redhat) to get software, will it be from a repo sponsored by sun?Depends. With Solaris you can use the Solaris Companion CD to get a few of the more generic programs or you can use sites such as Blastwave, SunFreeWare, Package Archive etc... to add more software of you can always compile from source.
OpenSolaris has a pkg install command which is analogous to yum and contains a lot more software then the Solaris Companion CD. If you hunt around you can get a list of all software that pkg install can install to your system.
also how would I update the system. for instance I see a new version of solairs will be out in late october. do I have to do a complete reinstall or can I just plop in a new cd and hit "upgrade" (or something of that nature). basically I Plop in the DVD and hit "upgrade" or you can do fancy things like live upgrade if you plan in advance.
guess I am saying what am I missing by getting solaris free without support. is it just tech support or is it updates and software. Patches that aren't labeled as critical or security, phone support, etc... are not part of "free" Solaris.
secondly, would opensolaris be a better option. the reason I am apprehensive is because based on some reviews I have read it is not supported by much hardware and is buggy. There is a device detection tool that can be used for either OS so you can see in advance if your hardware is probably supported. OpenSolaris contains programs that are generally more current then those that are offered by Solaris.

  • Sun Trunking on Solaris 10

How do you install Sun Trunking package on Solaris 10? Is it on the Solaris 10 CD? Looks like the Sun Trunking 1.3 download is just an update. The default install did not install the package.

SunTrunking is not part of any version of Solaris.
You should be able to get the version for Solaris 10 free from the Sun download center at www.sun.com.

  • Are Solaris Patches ONLY available for a fee?

I have tried repeatedly to get Patch Manager for Solaris 9, which we're running on a brand new V240. The application we purchased it for is not yet certified to be binary compatible with SOL 10, so we were forced to go back to SOL9.
SunSolve makes PatchManager and PatchPro available for free download to Solaris 8 users. Update Connection is available to Solaris 10 users. Solaris 9 users seem to be in a position to pay for a service plan to get updates.
We purcased 2 Sun Servers at the same time. The x86 server is running Linux, which we have no trouble getting free updates for, particularly security updates.
I'm thinking that maybe I need to switch our Sun SPARC server to OpenSolaris to get the same kind of benefits we are used to with Linux.
    Comments, suggestions, anyone?
    Thanks!
    John

After being told by many people in these forums that I could get the PatchManager and patches here for free, and going thru much frustration trying, I called the school's local Sun dealer.
The Sun dealer told me that since Sun released Solaris for FREE download, Sun is requiring a support contract to get updates and patches. Basically, the support contracts pay for the "FREE" O/S.
The Sun web pages kept insisting I have a support contract, so what the Sun dealer told me concurs with what I ran into on here.
Thanks for trying to help. I do appreciate it.

  • Intel boot cd Solaris 8

If you have problems creating the bootable cds from the downloadable Solaris 8 free files, you will see in the forum, the image provided for Solaris 8 is already an iso image. You need only burn the file as an image (not as a bootable cd). Have fun.

All of these messages are all quite normal solaris kernel
status messages (because you've booted with verbose "-v"
    kernel messages).
Hmm, it has detected your IDE harddisc (SAMSUNG, 6.5GB)
as the slave device on the primary IDE channel (there were
probably more messages before that SAMSUNG hard disc
where it recognized the master device on the primary IDE
channel; there is a device connected as master on the
    primary ide channel, right?).
And it has detected your ATAPI CDROM (COMPAQ SCR-3232)
on the secondary IDE channel, as the master device.
Is there a slave device present on the secondary IDE
channel? (probably not, otherwise it would appear
    before the "PCI-device: ide@1, ata1" line).
Hmm, the next step is probably that the kernel scans for
SCSI controllers. Do you have any SCSI controllers in that
system? (It might hang probing for some SCSI controller)
Assuming there are no SCSI controllers, the next step
of the kernel would probably to look for disk drives on each
of the disk controllers. (So, it might hang talking to your
    IDE hard disc drives)
Is the HDD LED active when the system is frozen?
Perhaps you get some real error messages when you wait a
    minute or two?
If you temporarily remove the power connector from both of
the IDE hard discs on the primary IDE channel (so that the
only IDE device is the CDROM), and you boot again with
"b kadb -v", is it still hanging after:
    model COMPAQ SCR-3232, stat 50, err 0
    cfg 0x85c0, cyl 0, hd 0, sec/trk 0
    mul1 0x0, mult2 0x0, dwcap 0x0, cap 0xf00
    piomode 0x200, dmamode 0x200, advpiomode 0x3
    minpio 120, minpioflow 120
    valid 0x2, dwdma 0x407, majver 0x0
    PCI-device: ide@1, ata1
    ata1 is /pci@0, 0/pci-ide@0,1/ide@1

  • Solaris 10 - price

Is Solaris 10 free of charge (FOC) for production use ? If no, what is the price ?
What is the price of Solaris 10 support from Sun ?
I know that OpenSolaris, like Red Hats Fedora, is free for production use.
Question : does Sun provide paid support for OpenSolaris ? If yes, what is the price ? Orthe only support one can get for OpenSolaris is the OpenSolaris community (which is voluntary in nature) ?
Would appreciate if someone could give me answers. Provide authoritative URLs that has the answers if you know them.
Thanks a lot for the help.

    Thanks for the reply.
I am looking for one which is licensed under an open source license too.
    I believe both
Solaris 10 (free to download and use) and
    Express Solaris
are not licensed under open source licenses right ?
So there are no package where it comes with both :
    -open source license and
    -Sun commercial support
    Thanks.

  • Patches and SunSolve

I have already mentioned in a couple of previous postings that, I am trying to install
studio 11 on a system on which Forte Developer 7 is already installed.
My question is, if I install studio 11 , is it still necessary for me to run
"version libC*" command under /usr/lib directory in order to check whether latest
patches are installed or not ?
I am under the impression that : I need not , as I am installing Sun studio 11 which is
the latest studio available. Can any body please confirm this ?
In case I am supposed to check whether latest patches are installed or not, the document says
I need to register myself with SunSolve. When I tried to register myself with SunSolve it asked me to
enter Service Plan. But I am not sure which Service plan I should enter . Can any body help me ?
    Thanks,
    Ramesh.

When you install Sun Studio 11, you have the option of also installing the required Solaris patches. You should accept that option, because Studio 11 will not run properly if the requried patches are not present. The patch installer will update a file only if it is a newer version than the one already on the system.
Some of the patches are for system libraries like the C++ runtime libraries. There is only one copy of each of these libraries on the system, installed in /usr/lib, and shared by all compilers and programs that need them. Old compilers can use new versions of these libraries, so it is always safe to install the newest patch.
Sun's upport model for free Solaris and free compilers is that most patches require a support contract. The current exceptions are security patches, patches for Sun Studio, and Solaris patches required by Sun Studio.
If you go to the Sun Studio patch page
    http://developers.sun.com/prodtech/cc/downloads/patches/index.jsp
you should be able to follow the links to the Sun Studio and required Solaris patches, and download them directly.

  • Sun Cluster and EMC AX150 does not work

    Hi All,
I tried to setup a Sun Cluster 3.2 (2x T2000) with an EMC AX 150 Storage. the device paths are highly instable and breaking down time and again. Tried to install Powerpath software of EMC but this time the did-devices are not recognized by Sun Cluster.
    Any help will be appriciated.
P.S: does anybody know whether a MSA 1000 will work with Sun Cluster 3.2.
    Regards

Looking at the EMC link on http://www.sun.com/software/cluster/osp/ it doesn't look like these storage systems have been tested by EMC and so may or may not work.
You could try using Sun's MPxIO rather than PowerPath. MPxIO is included in Solaris for free. Again, it may or may not work. You are unlikely to get support on either configuration until EMC has done the prerequisite engineering testing to resolve the sort of issues you are currently seeing.
    Regards,
    Tim

  • JES 2005Q4 Windows release date?

I see the JES 2005Q4 documentation is up for the Windows Server platform. Although in BETA.
Currently evaluating JES 2005Q1 for migrating system from Messaging Server 5.2p2 (also on Windows platform).
When is JES2005Q4 for Windows coming out?
    Eli

    Jay,
as always... your input is paramount and very
    welcome.
If JES2005Q1 was an experiment... why release it
commercially? And why is Sun charging full license
seat prices for defective software? It's like buying
a car and finding out that all buttons and controls
are glued on using kiddie glue... After an hour or
so.. it comes apart....Something you need to take up with your sales rep.
Gonna take this up with the Sun accountmanager.Almost 11 months have passed since the release of
    JES2005Q1.
Plenty of time to recheck and update both the
documentation and the code.Once documentation is released, it is NEVER changed. To have online doc different from printed doc in your hands is deemed to be too confusing. We do file doc bugs every day, and what gets changed is the next release.
    No activities there whatsoever.
    Are we in hibernation?
Whilst other releases on Linux/Solaris platform have
gotten many patches. Which is in itself both a good
thing and a bad thing. Too many patches, imply buggy
software needing patching up. It's like bringing
the car back to the dealer everytime to have the
buttons, nuts and bolts fastened again.
Mind you, these are patches meant to resolve bugs.
Not product improvements or enhancements.Again, please do take this up with your sales rep.
    >
If JES2005Q1 was an experiment for the Windows
environment... what assurances do I have as a
customer in the Windows environment that Sun will
continue to develop code and technology for that
    platform?Sales rep.
See my dilemma? (Note: I cannot introduce a new
Operating System platform in my infrastructure. This
would make the mailserver in itself more expensive
than any server on the Windows platform. Pure by
systems administrative and operative costs alone
talking man hours and salary here.)Well, I may differ with your analysis. I have Windows, Solaris, and Linux boxes, myself. I do extremely little admin work on the Solaris box, that relates to the OS, and not much more on the messaging Server. Since Solaris is free, I'm not at all convinced that installing Solaris on the same box that you might put windows on would be "more expensive" than windows.
    >
It's a bad thing to have documentation being written
by persons without knowledge of the product. It's
another bad thing to have grammar and spelling errors
in the scripts like "popaleting DIT......."
Hasty work is never done....Please show that to the sales rep.
    >
Even Messaging Server 5.2p2 stopped getting patches.
We have been running this buggy software on Windows a
little more over 2.5 years now since the last patch.
There are still bugs, no patches....Actually, there ARE hotfixes available for Windows post 5.2p2. You just have to contact tech support for them.
See my grievance... It's like there is no customer
care for Windows products. Then why bother at all?
I understand that JES2005Q1 is a complex product. But
that does not explain the spelling and grammar errors
in scripts and interfaces. That does not explain why
the software does not work out of the box (following
    the documentation).
It's like it was ported, coded and burnt or made
ready for distribution.. without testing the end
product in a lab environment. Ship of to the
dealers... "ow what's that you say... you lost the
rear mirror on the way over there? Don't worry... the
    customer won't notice it"
Releasing software is by no means an experiment.
Especially if you are going to charge customers the
full price of a seat plus maintenance. This is
disrespectful of customers. Customers run this
software in a production environment and provide
services. To provide quality services I myself and my
system administrators need to trust the product and
documentation. That trust has no foundation, it is
    all gone...
I don't know if any US (from headoffice) Sun
accountmanagers visit this forum, but you are welcome
to pass this thread on to them.I'm very sure no management visits this forum. I have become that voice that shouts "wolf" too often. They just don't listen to me.
They do listen to sales folk.
    >
Ending this ranting, cause I am saving the rest for
    the local account manager...
    Still no answer though:
What is the estimated release date of JES2005Q4?2005q4 for OS other than windows is released. When Windows is released is not something I know about. Ask your account rep to find out....

  • Imsbackup - imsrestore- mboxutil-reconstruct

i am using iplanet messaging server 5.2 patch 2 on windows 2003 Server. Please help me how can i run the following commands
    -imsbackup
    - imsrestore
    - mboxutil
    -reconstruct
from dos prompt. These are very important commands without them i am not able to take backup, maintanance & recovery on windows system.
    i found imsbackup.sh and imsrestore.sh files in msg-*/bin directory.
    thanx in advance.

Thanx a lot jay for this information. actually i am a
new user of Iplanet in Windows plateform. i found
all utilities (.exe) in these folders
    server-root/bin/msg/admin/bin
    and
server-root/bin/msg/store/bin Yeah, I no longer have a Windows install of 5.2. I'm all on 6.2, now, and Solaris X86....

Can i use iPlanet Console for taking backup of all
messages as i can take backup of directory server
from console itself. No, that functionality has never been part of Console, for Messaging Server. Messaging Server is not a GUI-based application...
    >
and is it possible for getting reports of disk quota
usage of all users from console or any web based
    utility.
i have used No. Mboxutil will give you such reports, but that's more command-line...
    >
    quotacheck.exe -i
    comand line utility.Yeah, that, too.
Actually, very few people run Messaging Server in production on Windows. Since 6.xx has been released on Solaris X86, most PC-based systems seem to be moving in this direction. Solaris is free, and Messaging works very, very well on Solaris (Linux is also available for 6.xx).
I would not personally try running Messaging 6.2 on Windows, even though it's released. This is our first 6.x release for Windows, and I'd consider it suitable for testing and demonstration. On the other hand, I've been running 6.1 and 6.2 on Solaris for over a year, and am very pleased with the stability.

  • Can I purchase only PART of  Sun Studio 10 ???

I am a long-time UnixWare Developer who is contemplating switching myself and my clients to Solaris 10. Solaris is free of course, but Sun Studio is very expensive -- about $3000 -- which is over 10 times more than I paid for the UnixWare Development Kit.
The only thing I really need is the C++ compiler and supporting libraries, and programs like "make", etc. Even though I have produced several hundred thousand lines of code, I haven't used a debugger in years, and don't need an IDE.
Can just PARTS of Sun Studio 10 be purchased independently, or is it "all or nothing"? I would be more likely make the move if I didn't have to invest in so much overkill. Components beyond the basics might hold an attraction as a separate -- and later -- investment.
    Thanks,
David H. Braun (owner/developer, MultiTask ComputerWorks)
P.S. -- If this is not currently possible, could someone pass this on as a suggestion to higher authorities at Sun. Enabling smaller quantum leaps always increases the likelihood a transition will take place.

    David,
Please send your question to [email protected]
    Thank you,

as you know, Solaris 8 free download for SPARC consists of four CDs including Installation, Software 1, Software 2, and Language. I have realized after trying several things that Software 1 and Language iso images downloaded from SUN site are corrupted, although downloaded zips for those can be normally unzipped. let me know if I am doing something wrong, or let me know where I can get a perfect version of those.
