Is Solaris a distributed operating system?
I wonder if somebody can give a plain answer to this!.
Yes/No ... and a little explain .
Thanks a lot!

Consider if you have solo or duo, and how 10.6 caused a lot of people to scream "this thing runs slower, uses more memory" and if you want to or need Mac OS X 10.7 Lion is what I assume you mean. Apple doesn't probably have anything official other than previews and WWDC.

Solaris 10 dual Operating system
I have computer has windows operating system, and I want to install Solaris on one of partition,
I don't have only one hardisk.
any one can please help me about that
thanks,I can't recommend this strongly enough: get a removable hard drive tray that fits in any 5-1/4" bay. You then can put a different hard drive in each tray and cold swap them whenever you want to change operating systems. It will add at most 10 seconds to the process of rebooting and allows your operating system to be on completely independent drives.
Want to boot Solaris? Shut down, slide out the Windows drive, slide in the Solaris drive, power on.
Want to reinstall the operating system? Just go ahead. The boot drive is its own, so there's no need to worry about the "other" partition.
A kit to do this (assuming that you have two available boot drives) costs about $40 total (one bay and two drive trays) depending on the brand and it eliminates the need for a partition manager entirely. I have this on three of my PCs and it's a god-send for running multiple operating systems, or even multple instances of the same operating system. -
Backing up Solaris 2.7 Operating System
Hi,
Would anyone be able to take me through the process of backing up the operating system under solaris 2.7. I have recently installed the software onto Sparc 10 boxes and would like to back up the O/S before i
proceed with any product installation. Please can you help! From the documentation i have been able to get it just describes how to backup file systems and directories using the ufsdump command. Is there
specific syntax with this command which will allow you to backup the whole operating system.
Cheers,
MartinTry to boot from a CDrom using boot cdrom -s,
once on single user you can dump all your system into a tape using ufsdump

I'm looking for some guide, information or help about the manage of windows 95 display resolution and the execution of Oracle Reports. The formal problem is: The output reports run properly in 800 x 600 resolution
but when the resolution change the output it's not good enough, seem less with poor characters definition or disappear some of the output data. I Hope that someone can help me to solve the problem or almost guide me to the next step.

Is it possible to run Labview version 6.5 with PowerPC as the target CPU and VxWorks as the target operating system?
If version 6.5 does not support this configuration, do any of the later versions support it?
I basically have an Ada executable and Labview executable that currently run on a Sun Machine with Solaris as the operating system. I'm re-architecting the system hardware and will be getting rid of the Sun Machine and Solaris. I'm don't have any issues with the Ada executable, but I'm not sure what configurations Labview supports.duplicate post
In the future, please don't try to stuff your message in the subject line. Thanks. -

XMLMark for UNIX like Operating Systems (Solaris, Linux, etc.)
Hi All,
I want to run the XMLmark benchmark I found and downloaded from
http://java.sun.com/developer/codesamples/webservices.html#Performance
in Solaris 10 or Red Hat Linux but the environment and configuration scripts are for Windows.
I wonder if we have a distribution or version of XMLmark for a UNIX
like Operating System.
Decided to post this, just in case somebody has a version for UNIX like OS, before I start the effort of porting it ... :( ... I am not a Microsoft Windows expert.
Thanks in advance,
Carlos.I ended up porting to shell the run_xmlmark.bat file. This is what the contents of run_xmlmark.sh look like:
#!/bin/sh
# Run XMLMark Java test on a Solaris/UNIX platform
# Carlos A. Morillo
# 11/01/2007
JAVA_HOME=/usr/jdk/instances/jdk1.5.0
export JAVA_HOME
echo $JAVA_HOME
XMLMARK_HOME=$HOME/src/java/XMLMark
export XMLMARK_HOME
echo $XMLMARK_HOME
ANT_HOME=/auyantepui/apache-ant-1.7.0
export ANT_HOME
echo $ANT_HOME
# Run the Java part
for f in $XMLMARK_HOME/ini/xmlmark_*.ini; do
$ANT_HOME/bin/ant -f $XMLMARK_HOME/Java/src/xmlmark.xml run-xmlmark -DiniFile=$f
done
Also I had to modify all the all the $XMLMARK_HOME/ini/xmlmark_*.ini files so instead of having "\\" in a file name, they have instead "//".

Solaris 5.10 All operating system level parameters
HI Experts,
Pl let me know .Solaris 5.10 All operating system level parameters on ECC6.0
.i really appreciate your feed back on this request

HariYou cannot upgrade Solaris (any version) by simply applying patches. You also cannot upgrade Solaris 10 via any sort of downloaded "upgrade" package.
You will need to download the current DVD/CD set, then boot from it. At that point, you will be offered the choice of upgrading your system. -
How to make Solaris 10 Operating System 11/06 CD install onto a PC
I have the Solaris 10 Operating System 11/06 CDs from Sun.
I am now trying to install the O/S onto a new internal HDD.
Powering up with the first CD (03-104927-01) in the drive, the monitor reports "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER".
Is not the CD a system disk?
How do I install Solaris from the CDs?
Additional information:
BIOS Setup information:
IDE Channel 0 Master - HDD
IDE Channel 4 Slave - DVD
Thanks for the helpIn your first post you discuss CDs (plural) as if you have the 4-disk or 5-disk set.
You do mention that the optical drive is a DVD.
Now you describe the optical media as being DVDs.
In the future, you need to be precise with details if you hope for `remote` assistance, such as in an Internet discussion forum.
I can only guess that your desktop computer's drive just has some occasional issues with various media.
Perhaps it is old and has issues reading the specific position where DVD boot sectors might be.
Booting from media has no relationship with what might already be installed.
Your laptop is likely newer with a fully capable drive.
That laptop optical drive might be better able to read DVD boot sectors.
I see two alternatives left to you.
Replace the drive, even if only temporarily with a borrowed drive...
else...
Download and burn the CD variety of Solaris.

Is solaris 10 a 32 bit operating System?
This might have a been stupid question,i am sure.
Is solaris 10 a 32 bit operating System? For SPARC platforms Solaris 7, Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 was both 32 and 64 bits.
Solaris 2.6 and earlier were only 32 bits.
Solaris 10 and later are only 64 bits.
Thats for SPARC, for x86 i guess that Solaris 9 or 10 was the first one with 64 bit support, but i'm not certain.

Next release of Solaris operating system, any given date or estimation?
Hi
Thank you for reading my post
Is there any given date or estimation about next release of:
-Solaris Operating system
-Solaris express
-Solaris express developer edition
ThanksSolaris express/ sxde are on a 3 month release cycle. The last release
was sx 5/07, so any day now.
In theory, I believe that solaris 10 was supposed to be on a 6 monthly release cycle.
The last release was 11/06, so its slipped a little.
I believe the next release of S10 will be S10 8/07.
The releases often make it to the public in the month after their notional release date.
So I would expect them both sometime in the next month or so. -
Performance on Solaris 10 - Operating system paging
Has anyone experience performance issues after an upgrade from Solaris 9 to Solaris 10 on SAP systems with limited memory?
We have many systems that are on servers with 4 Gig of memory and ran well on Solaris 9. After an upgrade to Solaris 10 we are experiencing very high OS system paging rates. The response times of the SAP systems are very poor when this occurs. It seems to take very little load to cause this.
I realize more memory or decreases in Oracle or SAP memory parms will solve this but am wondering if there is anything on the Solaris OS that could resolve this?
Thanks,
DanDISM can be used but in global zone only (according to Sun document "Best Practive for Running Database in Solaris Containers" , the proc_lock_memory privilege which is required to run the ora_dism_ process is not available in non globale zone)
The doc i got is from 2005, so don't know if the Sun recommendations has been updated since then.
In order to activate DISM (if you are in a global zone), sga_max_size should be set up larger than the sum of sga components: db_cache_size, shared_pool_size ...)
Also look for the Sun Blueprint "Dynamic Reconfiguration and Oracle 9i Dynamic Resizable SGA" on http://www.sun.com/blueprints
If you use ISM because in a non-global zone, you can use oracle parameter lock_sga to ensure the SGA is loaded into the RAM and useism_for_pga = true to ensure PGA is loaded into the RAM.
Make sure you have enough RAM to hold filesystem cache (OS memory) , oracle memory, and applications memory
Make sur your PGA and SGA are correctly sized size, since you won't be able to dynamically change the ISM allocation. (see v$shared_pool_advice, v$db_cache_advice, v$pga_target_advice ...)
Take the usual precautions:
- have a successfull backup first
- do the change on a test machine
- and/or ask your vendor before proceeding
Other Doc to read ...
Note 697483 - "Oracle Dynamic SGA on Solaris" (recommends to read Sun doc n°230653)
Note 724713 - parameter settings for Solaris 10, here is an extract :
Only one parameter from SAP note 395438 should remain in file
etc/system
set rlim_fd_cur=8192
As described in SunSolve document 215536, the "Large Page Out Of the Box" (LPOOB) feature of the Solaris 10 memory management, first implemented in Solaris 10 1/06 (Update 1), can lead to performance problems when the system runs out of large chunks of free contiguous memory. This is because the Solaris 10 kernel by default will attempt to relocate memory pages to free up space for creating larger blocks of contiguous memory. Known symptoms are high %system CPU time in vmstat, high number of cross calls in mpstat, and Oracle calling mmap(2) to /dev/zero for getting more memory.
Memory page relocation for satisfying large page allocation requests can be disabled by setting the following Solaris kernel parameter in /etc/system
set pg_contig_disable=1
This will not switch off the LPOOB feature. Large memory pages will still be used when enough free space of contiguous memory is available, so the benefits of this feature will remain

Backup & Recovery From Diffferent Operating system
My Oracle 9i Databae is running on Unix server.
I want to take the backup and recovery operation from my NT machine. should i take care anything, like character set...etc.....?Standby databases must be the same database version and run on the same operating system as the primary. You can't have an NT standby database with a Solaris primary database. I expect this restriction will be relaxed for logical standby databases in the future, but the restriction is still there in 10.1.
For the same reasons, you cannot recover a database onto an operating system other than the operating system that the original database was running on. Depending on the size of the database, the amount of acceptable downtime, and the volatility of the data, you may be able to do a full export on the Unix server and import that on the Windows server.
