I cannot give any guarantee as to whether you can make a USB connection between camcorder and computer/Premiere Elements 10 Get Media/"Flip, AVCHD, Cameras, Phones or Removal Drive"/Video Importer but it might work.
But worst case, which is not so bad, is transferring the AVCHD files to the computer hard drive and then importing the files into a Premiere Elements 10 project with the program's Get Media/Files and Folders.
If you have Full 1080i30, then the project preset that you would set before you import the files would be
NTSC
AVCHD
Full HD 1080i30
We can discuss more about settings when you have more details.
You are at a disadvantage with Premiere Elements 10 on Windows Vista (32 or 64 bit). In that arrangement, Premiere Elements 10 is a 32 bit application with the limitations of 32 bit system. AVCHD is a rather resource demanding format. If Premiere Elements 10 were on specifically Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit, then it would be a 64 bit application that could take advantage of the 64 bit resources. All that would translate into getting a larger project taken to successful completion with a greater frequency.
Please review and then we can go further into the details and then decide what next.

Connecting Sony Handycam HDR-SR10 to Macbook (circa Jan 2007)

Hey Guys,
Sorry for my macbook noobness but I'm actually asking this question on behalf of my girlfriend.
She has a HDR-SR10 handycam as mentioned and needs to hook it up via USB. The install disk that came with it is windows (according to her, I havent verified if it has any Mac software on it), and if she plugs it in it doesnt auto-install.
I've heard these cameras work OK with the Intel Macbooks, however I think this macbook isnt an Intel model. It was bought around the start of 2007...
Has anybody had much luck connecting the HDR-SR10 to these vintage Macbooks and how did you go about it?

I don't know if this will work for you (tested with an HDR-SR8), but, you'll need an external firewire hard-disk, the steps:
1. Plug the camera to your Mac;
2. A folder named NO NAME will appear in your desktop (if you have set in Finder to show external HD's);
3. Copy all the folders inside NO NAME to the external hard-disk;
4. Eject both NO NAME and your external hard-disk;
5. Disconnect both the camera and the firewire cords;
6. Open iMovie and press command + I (Movie import window will open);
7. Plug your external hard-disk and a message telling you that a new camera was detected will appear;
8. All the movies inside the external firewire disk should appear, select the ones you want to import or all of them;
The first time i did this, nothing happened, disconnecting and connecting the cord did the trick for me, the second time this was not necessarily, just press command + I and the message should appear, also i have HD and SD footage on the camera and could only import SD footages directly from the camera, to import HD footages i have to do the firewire disk trick (maybe you don't need to copy all the folders, only the AVHCD folder).
It took me 1 week of trial-error until: success!!

Apparently the import problem was resolved in update 9.0.1 (the latest version of iMovie '11 is 9.0.2) - see the article link in my first post above.

Sony Handycam HDR no longer recognized

I have a Sony HDR HDD camcorder that, for quite a while now, had no issues with its 4pin DV-USB cable (that came with it) connection to my Mac Pro being recognized by iMovie 9. I haven't made a video in a couple of months, but recently, I filmed about 3 hours worth of wedding footage, connected the camcorder to the Mac as before, iPhoto recognized it instantly (and auto-launched as always) but iMovie refuses to believe the camcorder exists.
I've been told that no stores sell Sony's proprietary DV cables for their products (which makes since as universality would only benefit consumers and not businesses). Additionally, some go so far as to say Sony doesn't even make such a firewire cable to handle an issue wherein iMovie 9 now requires a firewire connection—or so I've heard.
1) Has iMovie 9 been nerfed in some update that now requires camcorders to be connected via firewire now.
2) If so, is there some method to import the videos either directly to the finder or into iMovie without the need for a potentially non-existent DV-Firewire cable?
PS: The connection is no longer recognized on my iMac as well.

Well… I opened Image Capture with the camcorder plugged in and modified the "Connecting this camera opens…" menu to be iMovie. Unfortunately, all that resulted in was opening iMovie upon connecting the camera. iMovie still refuses to acknowledge that the camcorder is connected.
Related: This is my work machine, wherein we do moderate amounts of video capture and I am using iMovie '08 7.1.4 on OS X 10.6.8. I'm really disappointed in Apple having altered something within iMovie (or the OS) that prevents the camcorder from being recognized. The last import I had performed was March 25, 2011.
More info regarding the camcorder: Sony Handycam HDR-SR11 60GB HDD. I am going to try to burn straight to DVD and then try and import from that, but that is, of course, not ideal. I'd much prefer to import into iMovie directly from the camera as I used to be able to do.
EDIT: I'm guessing you need to install the Picture Motion Browser software for the Disc-Burn feature of the camcorder to work. And that is only available on a Windows-based PC.

Sony HandyCam HDR-XR200

Hi All,
I just bought a sony handycam and found out that it is not compatible with my Mac (OS X 10.4.4). I was told, however, that the camera IS compatible with iMovie 2009. iMovie 2009 is too advanced for my Mac, so I would need to buy a new iMac. I was thinking about buying a newer Mac anyway, but can someone confirm this please?

I have also the sony handycam hdr-xr200.
The handycam is working 50% with iMovie 08. One time iMovie 08 can see the handycam and the other time he doesn't see te handycam.
I don't know why that is.
Is somebody knowing if it with iMovie 09 for the full 100% works?
I'am from the Netherlands so my English is not so best, sorry for that and I hope that you can understand what I have written.
I hope somebody have an answer.

I bought an avid studio video editing software that does not work with my Sony. Looking at Premiere Elements 13. Will that work with the SONY video language?

From what I have read of your Sony Handcam HDR-PJ380 video specifications, I would expect that you would be able to import, edit, and export one of its video recordings. Assuming you are not getting a AVCHD.avi file which is not supported by Premiere Elements. Best I can determine, you should be getting AVCHD.mts or AVCHD.mp4.
But, what do you mean by the "SONY video language"?
But, whatever the case, I would strongly encourage you to give the Premiere Elements 13 tryout a workout before purchasing it to assure that it is compatible with your computer environment, source media, and project goals.

My Sony DV Camera is not Being Recognized in Premiere Elements 13

I am using a PC (w/ Windows8.1 Pro - 64 bit with Media Center). I installed a copy of Premiere Elements 13 and left a copy of Premiere Elements 10 on the machine.
My camera Sony DV (DCR-PC100) video camera is connected to the computer via IEEE-1394 (fire wire) cable. The connection is secure and I have confirmed the connection With the camera on the VTR setting, the software does not recognize the camera. In other words, I was not able see to the camera within the program under Project Settings -> Capture. I only see the WDM Capture option. (The project is setup with the correct DV camera option; Standard DV NTSC).
However, when I tried it out on Premiere Elements (PE) 10, I am able to see the DV camera under the Project Settings -> Capture. In fact, I am able to capture video clips as well as control the camera under PE 10.
Please provide guidance on steps on recognizing my camera in PE13.

Premiere Elements does not support DV and HDV data capture firewire into a Premiere Elements Capture Window anymore. The last version to have that feature is version 12/12.1.
Please refer to Adobe document for suggested workarounds for this situation.

Final Cut Pro X and Sony Handycam HDR-CX105

I'm thinking of buying Final Cut Pro X, but the list of compatible cameras here:
Cameras supported by Final Cut Pro X - Apple Support
doesn't contain the HDR-CX105 - although it seems to contain literally dozens of other Sony AVCHD cameras.
Does anyone know if this is simply an omission, or does its absence from the list mean that it won't be possible to import directly? I'd rather avoid having to convert files first, especially since Final Cut Pro will now accept AVCHD files.

Hi Tom - there has been a development, of sorts.
I had been recording onto the 32Gb Pro Duo memory stick, and FCP X didn't seem to recognise it. The 'NO NAME' disk that appeared on my desktop would appear to be the camera's internal memory, and that didn't contain any data.
I switched to Internal Memory, recorded a clip and connected the camera again. This time, NO NAME appeared under Cameras, and the MTS clip appeared in the Input window. The trouble is that my internal memory is only 8Gb, which only gives me an hour's recording time. Am I likely to be stuck with this limitation? I have just ordered a USB card reader from Amazon which apparently reads Pro Duo sticks in the hope that that might work...

Compatibility FC studio w/ sony handycam HDR-HC9E

impossible to work with HDV from the sony HDR-HC9E!... the software doesn't recognize it when in HDV mode!... an updating seems necessary as soon as possible!...
(intermediate solution seems possible: FC pro accepts to capture HDV files from the handycam although the setting is on: "DV PAL anamorphic"...)

I'd upgrade.. you're G5 won't run the latest, but it would edit the video captured with your intel machine... AVCHD comes in directly to FCP and is transcoded there to ProRes which blows the doors off the AIC codec... Big time.

If I transcode the AVCHD to ProRes with my intel machine will my G5 with FCP 5 be able to read it, or will I have to upgrade that to FCP 6?

Importing movies from Sony Handycam HDR-SR11 into iMovie HD 6.0.3

I am unable to open the .MTS clips in iMovie HD 6.0.3 that I've copied to my hard drive via a USB connection from the HDR-SR11. This would be my first time attempting to use iMovie and have troubleshooted to no avail. I am unable to find a clear answer as to whether the movies from this model Sony camcorder would work with my current version of iMovie. Would I need to upgrade and purchase iLife '09?

.MTS files are AVCHD- based - a form of MPEG format. iMovie HD needs .dv formatted material, imported into iMovie via a firewire connection. It may be possible to convert your files to .dv (not certain about that) using:

It may be that you will instead need to use the latest imovie variant - iMovie 09.

HT1793 Importing from Sony Handycam HDR-CX500:

I used to have no problems downloading from my handycam to Imovies.
Now Imovies can only view 4 or 5 recordings that have already been downloaded.
It cannot see any newer recordings.
Can anyone shed any light on what I need to do to download again?

AVCHD will work, as long as you shoot in 30P or 30i (also known as 60i).
60P will not work unless you use a third party program to process it before importing to iMovie.
If you are recording in PAL format 25P and 25i (50i) will work, but 50P will not.

I am in the process of buying a apple pro, and I want to transfer all video's and pictures from the camcorder to the lap top will I be able to transfer HD?

Capturing HDR-HC9 tape video was easy enough. The playback was aweful. My graphics card is the second listed card in compliance. Nvidia GT 330M, nothing to write home about. I've got 8MB RAM. Maybe it was a fluke and I'll have better results later, but ghoting of a frame whas shown throughout the couple minute capture process.. It automatically broke up the capture into three segments. I haven't easily found a way to merg them as "join" is disabled. I uploaded one of those segment to FB w/great quality. 80MB file size, took a little but it got there.
