Is SP Online easier to administer than On-prem?

I have been doing sharepoint "DevOps" for over 7 years now, and am currently at a non profit with on-prem sharepoint 2013.
One thing I have been deliberating is whether SharePoint Online has a lower Total Cost of Ownership than on-prem. We don't have an enterprise class administration environment so keeping the dev, test, prod, and other environments in sync is a manual effort,
moving datacenters, changing SQL Instances, all the fixes for those are done manually by me. And of course there is tracking down errors in the event logs, etc. This administration takes a large effort from me, which means it costs my non profit money they
could spend on other things, as well as my time I could be spending delivering solutions. (Not to mention, I just heard the .Net Rocks podcasts on doing Dev or Ops, and DevOps being a master of none :)
Our environment is pretty simple, mostly out of the box, so migrating is more a question of picking a tool and uploading files (no BDC or other issues).
I have been pushing to move to Online and doing research on what is required for that. But one thing I am having trouble finding is any metrics for exactly how much money (or person-hours) could be saved by moving to online. Does anyone have metrics? Or
even anecdots? Did you move from on-prem to Online? What was the effect and how did that help you?
Thanks

If you're primarily doing OOTB functionality, then yes SPO is likely less expensive.

  • Is ASM easier to use than BCEL?

    I need to use a library to manipulate bytecode, I was just wondering if ASM is much easier to use than BCEL because im tearing my hair out with BCEL.

    folks often say that
    asm is like sax,
    bcel is like dom
    for parsing class files, i think they are both pretty simple.
    If you are creating classes, they tend to both be more difficult.
    asm is a little more consistent and lite weight.
    bcel is a little better handling the constant pool, and also has the concept of a Repository (classpath).
    For new work, you probably should use asm, as there probably will be more support going forward, for new features.

  • Amex Everyday easier to get than Blue Cash?

    My last three baddies wil fall off my Experian in October and I wanted to get an Amex Blue Cash Everyday to basically buy all my food and fuel and stuff with to earn cash back, but from what I've read, the regualar Everyday card (the grey/silver one) might be easier to obtain.   Once those negatives fall off I should be looking at a mid 600's score with 9 inquiries and very small balances on my few other cards that I keep that way on purpose. (My TU is the best right now with no negatives, but trying to get Amex to pull TU is not an easy task, from what I've read here and there.)

    I highly doubt that there's a difference in underwriting for these two cards. I've had many AmEx revolvers over the years, and the only one I noticed that had easier underwriting criteria is the cobranded Gold Delta Skymiles card. +1 For what it's worth, I got a BCP (and a Green card) with two 6-year old COs, and I also had a BK7 in 2000 in which an Amex account was included.  My EX at time of approval in April was 695.Whaaaat? Wow lucky! Also, there is quite a difference for someone with a 695 Fico score and someone in the mid-600s when it comes to approvals by Amex. I still believe the BCP has tougher UW requirements than the ED... but I was too chicken to test this theory out so I only tried for the ED card I agree with you as well.  And you're right, I was very lucky to be able to get 'back in' with Amex.    Actually, I applied for the Green card expecting to get declined, just to get a 'free' copy of my Experian FICO.  Well, surprise, surprise, it was approved!  The only 'problem', though, is I honestly didn't (and still don't) have much use for a charge card.  So I had read about the '2-for-1' HPs with Amex, and I decided to go for the BCP,  which is what I really would have wanted to begin with... and it was approved as well.  Granted, I only got a $1K SL and after the promo the APR is 21.9%, but that's OK.  I just use it at Kroger and Publix, and I PIF each month, collecting 6% back for groceries.  Rinse, and repeat...  In case you're wondering, yes, Amex does 'remember' what happened 15 years ago.  About two weeks after my approval, when I logged in online, instead of saying "Member since 2015" it started saying "Member since 1995".  Also, I was denied a CLI, and the letter said it was due to "...previous account experience with American Express", or something like that.  So it will likely be a long time before I get a CLI, if ever, but for my purposes I have what I need.They remember what happened 35 years ago. A day after I got my ED in January, the MSD changed to 1980.

  • Is ios 8 easier to read than ios 7?

    I never updated my ipad to ios 7 because of poor contrast issues and too thin font.  I am visually impaired and was unable to read anything in ios 7 even with all visual accessibility options on.  Is the font easier to read in ios 8?  And is there better contrast?  Is there any place I can see a typical page of text comparing ios 6, 7 and 8?  Any help would be appreciated.

    This is from my iPad, which is on 7
    this is my iPod, which is on iOS8
    I don't have a way to get you anything from iOS6. I did feel that 8 is a bit more legible and readable than 7 was.

  • Much easier in ASP than Servlets - prove me wrong..please

    Be the judge - is ASP better than servlets in this case?
    Here is the ASP/script segment that can take binary image data stored in a buffer and with one simple method - return that data to the browser - such that the image appears in the requesting browser window, simple? in ASP, yes. Servlets? convince me its easier than this.
    ASP APPROACH:
    'Buff is a simple array of bytes - just assume its prefilled'
    Response.BinaryWrite(Buff)
    This works. I see the image in the browser window that points to this ASP page.
    SERVLET APPROACH:
    // First get the data from the source where its stored, I do this with:
    BufferedInputStream in = new BufferedInputStream(connection.getInputStream());
    int size = in.available();
    response.setContentType("image/jpg");
    // now I need to put the data in a buffer, buff
    // first opening an outputstream on the response
    ServletOutputStream out = response.getOutputStream();
    byte[] buff = new byte[size];
    int count;
    while ((count = in.read(buff)) != -1)
    out.write(buff, 0, count);
    This will not return the image directly back to the browser window. IE doesn't identify the data type coming in...asks you to open or save it, then makes you choose the application to read it - forcing you to open another window...finally you can see the image.
    Questions:
    A.) Is there a better way to do this using servlets so it will not prompt me to open or save the file? I cannot use IMG SRC and HTML tags - I must only return the image like in ASP. Only needs the image.
    B.) Does MS hide implementation for ASP in their browser to make this easier for them?
    C.) Am I just a terrible Java programmer? (watch it!)
    D.) All of the above.

    You can go even further. Program in Visual Basic is much, much simpler than in Java. Why all those "crazy" people are using Java.
    Everything from MS starting from OS to distributed technologies is outdated.

    Hi all- I'm new to this online community of Apple support; my iPhone 5s is stuck on a screen that has the connect to iTunes icon, this started after I upgraded to IOS 8.1.1 from the beta to fixed version; I don't use iTunes and have an IPad, home PC, office PC, and Galaxy Tab, and I went through (failed) the process of installing itunes on my office PC but needed to update windows; after going through all redommendations I could find, including Apple phone support, I still haven't had success.  Does anyone know a way to get my phone past that screen?  I don't have time to keep doing updates and installation attempts;'I don't care about the content at this point; but I can't get to the settings to "reset all" and start from scratch; I bought i loud for storage and have an old 4s that has a broken screen butt still works and I have another active 4s on my plaN.  Im not tech savvy myself; but I know some community members are pure geniuses! !I just need a fast way to fix this bug;'I use it for work and it's been inaccessible all week, the only time I have to go to an Apple Store is this weekend; I don't want to move to the iphone6 because it's too big.  I didn't know this community existed; it's cool; for this issue, I just have no time for a new phone or phone support again; I'm posting this question as a last resort; any feedback is appreciated......and I apolo in advance if this post goes under the wrong thread

    No. You have no alternative but to plug it into a computer running iTunes and restore it.

  • Bold 9900 better & easier to use than Z10 IMHO

    The Z10 has been a huge disappointment to me, I have no choice but to go back to my 9900.
    1. Blackberry Link didn't sync my contacts, calendar or memos when I switched devices, I had to sync my phone contacts to Outlook using Blackberry Desktop Manager, export to CSV, import to my Windows Live Account, then sync the contacts from that account.
    2. I drive a 2010 Honda Accord EX-V6 which has Handsfree Link bluetooth. After the first pairing, my 9900 and 9810 connect with the car automatically everytime I start the car. The Z10 paired with the car just fine but has to be connected manually everytime, there's no option on the Z10 to set the car as a trusted device.
    3. My company uses Lotus Notes, the IT department spent a whole day trying to set up enterprise mail on the Z10, still haven't managed it. Apparently it's not compatible with something that the 9900 and 9810 ran just fine on.
    4. I don't really care about apps that much, I only had Endomondo, WhatsApp and Wi-Fi Manager on my BB7 phones, none of them is available in BB10.
    5. Blackberry Link is a step backward from Desktop Manager, you can't do a selective restore of content, it says its done stuff but really hasn't and you can't choose what items to sync.
    Unfortunately, I had to exchange my normal sim card for a micro sim when I got the Z10 so its not easy to switch right back.
    I have been a staunch fan of Blackberry for the last 8 years, my last non-Blackberry phone was a Nokia that didn't have push email. I waited patiently while friends and family moved to iPhone & Samsung and went to extreme lengths to buy the phone as soon as it became available. I don't own any shares in RIM, just wanted to see them succeed and not get overrun by iOS and Android, but it should be easier to move from an old Blackberry OS to a new one.
    On a Blackberry I shouldn't be complaining about syncing contacts, bluetooth and email. Apologies for the rant, I was really looking forward to this phone.

    Hi @GranReviewsmo,
    I imagine that you didn't recieve a bunch of replies to this because much of this has been mentioned or answered in many other threads here, but here goes:
    There have been issues with Blackberry Link for many people, myself included, and many of us have simply learned to live without it until it is fixed...
    No idea why this isn't working for you, all of my bluetooth devices (and I have many, 2 cars, home home, various audio devices, playbook, etc.) all seem to connect automatically when I turn them on or am close. The only setting that I can see is in Bluetooth Settings > configure > and make sure that 'connect to the last device used when turned on' is selected. Otherwise I suggest deleting the car's bluetooth and re-connecting it?
    How is the Lotus notes facing the internet? I don't believe that Lotus Notes is supported under BES10 anymore (but I could be wrong on that...) but you should still be able to get to your mail accounts if they have POP or IMAP access enabled, if that's not possible with Louts Notes.. then I suggest a bit more research into the compatibility with Lotus Notes.. not sure where they are headed with that.
    WhatsApp should be released next week according to CrackBerry.com, many other apps are on the way. I was just about to contact Endomondo myself to see if they planned to come over, it was a nice app on BB7. See my signature for more info on my Twitter hashtag #GetWithBB10.
    As per #1, there are many issues with Link... and we all hope to see these cleared up in the near future.
    Did your microSIM come as a punch out (thus able to act as a full size as well?) If so you can simply use a bit of scotch tape on the backing of the punchout to make it whole again. I have done this a few times myself.
    I don't think anyone here is offended by your rant, we all have similar issues or other issues.. many of us just feel that the other changes are so good that we can live with these other issues until they are sorted.

  • Belle easier to use than Android - FACT

    Android is well supported and has an amazing array of apps available and can do some snazzy desktop effects....
    But...   for ease of use   I think Belle is far easier to use for the mass market
    If N97  etc. Was launched with Belle   Nokia would be in a strong position right now and I don't think android would be quite so dominant.
    So well done Nokia  albeit a bit late but my N8 is a much more enjoyable to use now.  I was even showing it of to some Android users at work, who were impressed, saying things like "but I thought Nokia was old and rubbish" that looks kool.
    Lets get Belle on as many Nokia phones as possible (try and wipe out the past) Nokia concentrate on delivering  more cool widgets  that we will show to all our friends  and together we can gain back market share.
    We have been harsh on you Nokia but only because we could see you making the "same" dumb mistakes but we had your best interest we want to see you back at the top where you should be.
    Come on lets do this.

  • Photos sent to Online printing service darker than on calibrated monitor

    ok, I know that prints are typically darker than what is shown on the screen(with loss of detail in the shadows that was visible on the screen.) I calibrated my monitor using both the eyeone display 2 puck and coloreyes software using gama 2.2, D65, Luminance 120. (which calibrated closely to using the eyeone software. I am using a 2008 macbookpro laptop. I like the colors on the screen and I exported the files using sRGB but also checked the soft proof and both the soft proof and exported photos (in preview) looked fine.
    Here are my questions. I used black point compensation, is this correct?
    Also, knowing that the photos are printing darker what is the best way to compensate? Should I use the gamma adjustment on the export or should I perform an adjustment on the photo in aperture? (If in aperture which adjustment?)

    Can you print them yourself? How do they look?
    IME, Black Point Compensation should be used (I forget why, but it is recommended).
    If prints you make look right, I would bring it up with the on-line printing service.

  • Sharepoint online presence with Lync 2010 On Prem

    We have recently moved to Office 365 in an exchange hybrid deployment.  We have Lync 2010 on-prem, and are not using
    lync online.  We are experiencing issues with IM presence in sharepoint online and one drive, but have presence indicator within outlook online.  We do not see the options to sign into im at all, and the presence indicator is grey.  I verified
    that the SIP:username@domainname was added to the PROXY attribute in AD.
    Any idea where we should start?

    Hi,
    Did you integration Lync Server with SharePoint successfully?
    Please check if ActiveX control work normally. To display the presence indicator and its associated contact card (in Office 2010), SharePoint uses the Microsoft ActiveX control
    name.dll. The ActiveX control makes calls directly to the Microsoft Lync 2010 API, and then Lync makes MAPI or Exchange calls to supply the requested information.
    You can refer to the following link:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/modonovan/archive/2005/05/11/416376.aspx
    Please also update Lync Server and SharePoint Server to the latest version and then test again.
