Is Spotlight limited to Apple apps in 3.0?
Do my eyes deceive me, or does 3.0 search ONLY Apple programs??
The Apple site says: "Spotlight searches all of your contacts, email, calendars, and notes, as well as everything in your iPod."
What do they mean by "everything in your iPod", if not other apps?
I hope I've just missed some search setting, as I was hoping 3.0 would bring the iPhone closer to the capabilities of my Palm Pilot from a decade back.
ipod refers only to the app "ipod" on ur iphone so it means it searchs all ur notes, contacts, emails, calendars, and any music albums, or videos etc, in your ipod app not ur entire phone... so ya it only works for original apple apps

Can't add/edit Spotlight Comments in Apple default apps
I can't add text to the Spotlight Comments field (via Get Info) in Apple's apps installed by default. The computer just beeps when I try to type something. However, I have no such problem with 3rd party apps.
Is this a bug or is there something I have to do to allow Spotlight Comments?
The permissions on all Apple apps installed by Snow Leopard are "system: "Read & Write," "wheel: Read only," and "everyone: Read only."
Thanks.
Message was edited by: Gunny SackSomeone else noted that and I tried a few and couldn't edit them, even after giving myself write permissions. It might be tied to some form of code signing/protection.

IPhone limited to 130 apps at a time! 6,200 apps available in app store
The i phone is limited to nine app screen i notice this when i try to move on to a tenth screen and it would not let me and also when you download a app after all 9 screen are full the app dose not show up but the app store says it is installed apple needs to expand the amount of screen allowed. you then end up having to delete 2 apps download 1 app in able to make the invisible app appear you have to try this one out for your self so you get a better idea of what i mean so it looks like we are limited to 144 apps per iPhone subtract 14 apps that come default on the screen not including the 4 that are on the bar below you are left with 130 apps that can be downloaded and use at a time per i phone that ***** there are over 6,200 apps available in the app store as i type this to you and apple is limiting me to only carry 130 at a time there is somthing worng with this and i think somthing should be done!
No acutally what that means is most people like myself have to install 30 apps just to get the iphone to do half the things it should have done out of the box. Sure some are wants but most are "need" in order for it to do the things my old palm treo 600 could do, and still there's not copy and past and no video. On top of that they have a stupid 130 limit. I'd love to hear why that is.

I have a problem in Yosemite where many but not all Apple apps crash when launched. This only happens for one user and includes Messages, Pages, Dictionary, Notes, and Text Edit among others. Not effected are Mail and Safari. There is also a problem selecting iCloud apps for that user in System Preference where I can't get some selections to stick. Other users are fine.
I have tried various methods for reseting permissions for that user Home folder including Terminal commands while logged in as that user and as Root. Also did the ACL reset from root > Utilities.
It seems to be a problem outside of that user's Home folder. I haven't tried deleting and recreating that user account.
Below is the beggining of the error message I get when launching the problem apps. I can't post the complete error message if anyone is interested.

This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar. -
How do I turn off Apple Apps?
How do I remove the Apple apps that I don't have any use for? I can remove the ones I downloaded but not Apples. I looked all through iTunes as well and can't turn them off there. Is this deliberate?
Thanks for your response regarding this specific part of my issue. That's a pity because I'm an tricky situation.
I have wound up getting an iPhone contract that has me living in a data roaming area for my mobile provider. This is partly due to insufficient knowledge, lack of education in the matter and partly due to the nature of all services in the remote Australian town I live in. The reason I went with this provider in the first place was due to the limited services I could access that had signal in my home and finance. Incidentally all three of them sell iPhones. The first one's cheapest deal is $100 a month for the contract with a lousy deal. The second has intermittent signal in our home, I may have gone with one of their plans if not for the poor signal. The third, which I went with, a fairly good deal for the cash and the cellular coverage perfect all over the property. I have since found out their roaming data network, which I live in is contracted to the first option which own the monopoly and hence the ridiculous mb charges. Occasionally it connects to the second option, but I get the feeling they are also subcontracting off the first! Anyway...
So I live in a roaming data area, It's not international roaming so the phone won't protect me from the excessive mb charges. I started out only using general apps when in WI-FI but found intermittent drop outs which I never noticed happen was causing excessive charges. I have since noticed the signal bars for the WI-FI not change but a spinner indicator ,all very easy to miss. I contacted the network and they refuse to turn off my data network; despite a tech telling me it can be done. So until Apple come to the rescue and put in a feature like the no roaming feature that works for all mobile data connections, that are not the ones belonging to the service provider, I'm stuck turning the phone to aeroplane mode before using any app I don't completely trust. I can see Apples difficulty here, but I would settle for turning all data network off, just leaving the cellular network and WI-FI active. As things are I have to turn phone over to aeroplane mode, then turn WI-FI on then use app, then remember to turn the phone back on when finished. Sometimes I forget for a couple of hours. But I trust some apps or sometimes forget to turn the mobile off. Contacts app got me the yesterday; I was at the post office where I looked up an address and accidentally tapped the address on the card and the maps app loaded up. This is followed by mad stumble to close it before it uses data. So easy to do, also happened using the iPod in the car a few days back. While selecting a pod cast I accidentally clicked "Get more episodes…" and safari loaded, Panic!!! Also what makes it worse, is that I can't remove or hide some apps provided by Apple, like Maps, for example, to reduce the risk of accidental tap. Feel very vulnerable! There is also a risk of forgetting to switch the phone to aeroplane mode when I let a friend checkout the phone or just play one of my games.
So Apple, what are my options? Shelve the phone by leaving phone permanently off turning it into an iPod touch and keep paying through the nose for 2 years? Or Gaol Break so I can make some changes that would help, I read there is a solution to this issue for gaol broken phones, (I'm not sure what impact that would have on my service). But frankly neither of these options I want to follow! I feel trapped!
Also there is nothing disclosing to me what apps have access to what data port. I would feel better if I could see a true list of what each app has access to. Not just on the phone but also on the app store, information detected and provided by hardware and not submitted by the programmer. No offence to all you GOOD programmers out there, but there are many that can't be trusted. An example of my need for this disclosure, does Remote (apple's iTunes remote) access the data network or just the WI-FI? Of course I would ASUME it only accesses the WI-FI. But reading the support page and description for it left me unsure, and it's this unsure feeling that scares me with this whole situation hanging over me. The home pages and the apps themselves are like a mine field to me. Another simple question reflecting this. Does the weather app regularly check for forecast data, or does it only do it when I open the app? What if I mistakenly click it while my data network is active? Sounds harmless doesn't it? But to me a mistake like that adds around $5 to my bill which is already pushing my budget. It would also be useful to be able to control each apps access privileges independently; but I would settle for a simple setting that has them all prompt me for access to the data network instead of just switching to it when there is a short WI-FI dropout.
I love the iPhone but I'm starting to feel I chose the wrong product. It has too many fluent network features (imagine saying that!) and it makes too many assumptions about my situation, most of which are wrong. The iPhone is the wrong product for someone who lives where I live and doesn't have basement full of gold! But I am stuck with this contract, what are my options?
Your's sincerely, life long Apple supporter… -
So what exactly does limited to "one app" mean with a Pro account and the new prices?
So it seems Pro has dropped in price but it is now limited to "one App".
So what exactly does that "one App" mean?
Only one tablet version or one phone version for a certain title?
Or you can have a tablet & phone version including android & iOS for that one title?I think that everyone received it just now…
Changes to Adobe Digital Publishing Suite, Professional Edition
Effective immediately, all customers who newly purchase or renew Digital Publishing Suite (DPS), Professional Edition, will be able to publish only one app per license of DPS Professional Edition.
Under this policy change, Professional Edition customers can publish an unlimited number of issues (.folio files) to a single app and distribute those issues based on purchased fulfillment bundles.
An app created with a single license of DPS Professional Edition can be distributed to any or all of the marketplaces that DPS supports, including the Apple App Store (and Newsstand), Google Play, Amazon Appstore, and the Windows Store.
In conjunction with this policy change, Adobe is reducing the price of a Professional Edition license to $4,800 USD annually (€3,600/¥480,000) or to $400 per month (€300/¥40,000) and will include 1,000 fulfillments annually. The number of fulfillments included with a monthly subscription remain unchanged.
This policy does not apply to test or demo apps published using Professional Edition. The one-app-per-license policy applies only to an app published to a supported marketplace(s).
If you are an agency, upon your renewal or purchase of Professional Edition, you can create only one app per Professional Edition license. If you have multiple clients for whom you are creating apps, either you as the agency or your client must purchase a Professional Edition license for each app published to a supported marketplace(s).
If you are an existing Professional Edition customer and choose to renew your Professional Edition license at the end of your annual agreement, these changes, including the lower price point and 1,000 fulfillments, apply at that time. These changes do not apply to your existing DPS Professional Edition agreement and take effect only if you renew your license.
DPS Professional Edition customers can continue to create unlimited Single Edition apps, which is unchanged under the new policy. A Single Edition app is defined as an app that includes one built-in or embedded folio.
If you expect to publish three or more apps annually, we encourage you to contact your local reseller to discuss pricing for a multi-year Enterprise Edition license.
Enterprise Edition offers additional functionality and benefits not available through Professional Edition. These include app customization, integration with back-end business systems, in-app marketing tools, targeted content based on user entitlement, and the ability to publish apps privately. -
Since upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite Mail, Spotlight, Mission Control and App-Store don´t work correctly. Is it possible to return to Mavericks?
If you have an external drive with an OS X Time Machine backup, then do restore of your last backup. If you have an external drive with a bootable clone of your previous system, you can boot to that clone and re-clone the OS X on your external drive back to your Mac's internal drive.
If you do not have either of these available, then the reverting/restoring process becomes much more complicated and involves purchasing an external drive and backing up your current system to that drive, then erasing, reformatting your hard drive and now your only options to installng an OS X version is doing a clean install of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, then upgrading, again, to either OS X 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion. OS X 10.9 Mavericks is no longer available for download and Apple has not made OS X 10.9 Mavericks available in any other form to be able to redownload and install.
Maybe it would be better to explain in detail your issues with Yosemite to see if any of us here can help you with your difficulties.
I am not running or using Yosemite, so I cannot help you with your Yosemite issues,
There are others here who can help you with Yosemite.
Good Luck. -
Issues with updating Apple apps with app store
I have begun to have issues with (all?) Apple apps and App store. including not updating after download, and repeat downloading. Two examples:
I had Pages 5.0.1. 3 days ago I used the app store to download Pages 5.1. This downloaded OK (watched the volume of data on Net Monitor). Although my Pages works OK it remains on 5.0.1, although the App Store shows that 5.1 has been “installed in the last 30 days”, and does not offer any further update. Same scenario for Numbers 3.0.1 and 3.1.
on the other hand
Keynote, iMovie and iPhoto won’t even open at all now, if I try to open them I am directed immediately to Apple sign-in in the App Store. Keynote and iMovie show updates available, but not iPhoto. I signed in when I tried just now opening iPhoto, and it immediately starting downloading the software again. I think my iPhoto was 9.5.1, downloaded in December and working fine since then.
I have access only to limited slow expensive broadband. This is taking my whole monthly allowance.
Is there some updating controlling software or file on the HD that could be corrupted?
Any ideas?
ThanksHave been to Library, and looked in Receipts/InstallHistory.plist
This plist confirms that on 27 Jan App Store downloaded Pages version 5.0.1 again (actually for the third time it appears), although it was supposed to be downloading version 5.1. My App Store/Updates page says version 5.1 was installed (which it isn’t). Same issue for Numbers.
The plist also confirms that the App Store forced me to download the same version of iPhoto in December and Today.
Keynote and iMovie (not one of the iWork) won't open until I download again, but do not have the internet capacity to redownload these large files again and again.
So far iTunes, Aperture and iBook do not seem to be affected. By the way have done simple things like restart, repair permissions etc...
Are there some files/applications that control the downloading of new versions that might be malfunctioning? -
Apple app store, download fails, error 1004 please try later
Can't down load Purchased Software from Apple App Store on Mac BookPro running Mavericks.
Asked to sign in with Apple ID, do so successfully, but when download starts, bet message: Error 1006 please try later.
I have tried a couple solutions to clear cache, but did not have them. Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2. -
How to add apple app store app back on my IPhone
Hello,
Can someone tell me how I can add the Apple app store app back on my IPhone.
Thanks,
KYAAs any default apps, the App Store can't be deleted from the phone. If it is missing, check your restriction settings. If App Store is deactivated, you can't find it.
If this is not the case, use the search function "spotlight" to find it on your phone. You can also reset the Home screen layout in Settings/General/Reset->Home Screen. -
Profile manager spotlight message "com.apple.iTunesLibraryService"
Hi
Before asking my question a quick overview of my computer environment:
I've a Mac mini with OS X server (Mavericks) connected to a Windows Server 2003 Active Directory. I'm going to use some 40 iMac's on our school (combined with Windows computers).
On the Mac mini I'm using Profile manager to allow or deny some settings on the iMac's.
My environment uses the Dutch language - I try to translate as accurate as possible!
I only have settings installed on machine-level (not on user or group level).
Here are my settings for the use of Spotlight (in Profile manager):
Devicegroup IMACS > Dock > Apps in dock: Launchpad, Maps, Safari, iTunes (11.1.4)
Devicegroup IMACS > Restrictions > Preferences:all selected items are deactivated except Dock, Mission Control, Sound and Spotlight
Devicegroup IMACS > Restrictions > Apps:Allow apps: iTunes, Spotlight, ...
Devicegroup IMACS > Restrictions > Media:Access to disks: internal disks allowed, ...
When a (test)user enters some characters in Spotlight and then erases those characters a message pops up stating: "You don't have access to use the application com.apple.iTunesLibraryService". This happens every first time the user makes use of Spotlight.
Anyone a clue what's missing of what I forgetting to adjust? So I potentially have the issue resolved. After a few minutes of cranking away at spotlight I have no error and have never had it take that long to pop up.
I opened console and when the error popped up stating “You do not have permission to use the application “com.apple.iTunesLibraryService.” in console this popped up:
com.apple.quicklook.sattelite:
[QL] Could not get ITLibrary: Error Domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code=100001 “Could not load.” UserInfo=0x7fd480609040 {NSLocalizedDescription=Could not load., NSUnderlyingError= 0x7fd48040d1e0 “The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSstatus error 100005.)”}
So I looked around a bit and found these paths contain references to QuickLook:
/System/Library/Frameworks/
/System/Library/QuickLook/
/Library/
~/Library/
I added all of those to the allowed folder list and so far that error has not popped up again. I added the /System/Library/QuickLook/ folder explicitly as opposed to just /System/Library/ as I do not want kids using screen sharing (cheating issue) or the jar launcher (minecrafting in class)
For reference I am on 10.9.4 using Profile Manager, payloads are managed with in a machine group. The folders mentioned above were added to the Allow Folders section of Apps under Restrictions. Hope this helps someone else. YMMV so far it appears to have worked. I'll update if it breaks again. -
I've actually had this problem since Mavericks. Something on my system is causing Apple Apps to crash. I've done a fresh reinstall and all is fine until I migrate my stuff back onto my laptop. Every time I go to the Apple App Store, I have intrusion, relentless stalking, piggy back computer usage, ID Theft, Account takeovers, and theft problems on everything including all brands of email accounts. I keep changing the ID and the passwords intermittently, but attacks continue. Erasing or replacing the HD does not remedy the situation either.
As of now, the computer has practically empty; 979.87 GB free out of 1TB. It may have a couple of notes, pdf's, and some bookmarks. It was recently erased and is running on the OS X 10.7.5 to avoid Apple App Store updates to Mavericks, Pages, Keynote, etc. The security was set on everything I could think of to use the internet safely.
Besides surfing the web, I only did a few things. Because Chrome is better recommended, I used Safari to download Firefox, then used Firefox to download Chrome. Safari won't download it directly. I checked Yahoo mail. I used the Apple ID to post a question in the Apple Communities (within 24-48 hours of today). I changed the password to Apple ID in case there was an issue later. (I have to change the password almost 100% of the time because it gets stolen often) I usually erase Firefox because I don't use it. This time I left it there while I worked on other things & erased it later.
After reading some online material, the system started to run slow as though there was too much data or space being taken up. Then I felt that someone or someone was using it at the same time. I disconnected the Ethernet and left an idle screen (it will sleep after a few minutes) because no sharing options remained. All fields are depopulated. All internet connection options were turned off and removed. Only the Ethernet remains. Unfortunately, that Bluetooth button can still be turned "on" and/or "discoverable". I don't know it this will still work with Bluetooth turned off and removed in Sharing. Please clarify that for me.
When I returned, the screen saver was changed. I expected to use a password to get back onto the computer, but no password was needed. I checked the settings and found the password for logging onto an idle & sleeping screen was removed. No one physically changed things around. This was done remotely or through malware.
I checked various system preferences, and found the locks to Sharing was open with some of the components set up for usage (public files, bluetooth, remote apple events, etc.). I tried to change some options, but some items did not move. I tried to lock it but it would not lock. I tried other sys pref screens and found that some of them had been dismantled too.
I tried to open the lock for other changes, but the password to System Preferences was changed.
Is it normal to get a password popup window to LOCK users & groups when it is OPEN? I don't believe you need a password to lock it. Eventually, open locks closed with no chance to immediately reopen it to adjust the preferences (all passwords were changed).
The terminal looks like it was used. No history was found. Reseting Password rejected new passwords. iTunes sharing could not be changed and parental control refused to lock. After waiting an hour or two, was able to lock it. I wonder what it was being used for.
Now that the internet and the network are disconnected (before sending this message), everything is still extremely slow. A single window takes a long time to open. I have no idea what is making it drag and I don't know where to look.
If history is repeating itself, then the computer is set for piracy just like before. Every place I go is watched, all passwords are captured, all files are checked, all email accounts can be stolen, chat and messages are used (email & computer), iTunes will be logged into, other types of accounts are stolen/taken over, and everything I type is read. Any changes will be sabotaged.
I am confident that someone in the Apple Community will have the answers to getting rid of this problem for good. If you don't have all the answers, then perhaps you have good resources and referrals (not speculations or guesses).
I read about apps, software, or devices that either detect or deter this type of problem. What are they and how do they work?
Q- Also, exactly what are the steps to transfer the OS X 10.7.5, Mavericks, and the future Yosemite to a flash drive or disk to avoid future contact with the Apple App Store or using the Apple ID? (external HD's have been sabotaged in the past-via remote or erasing program of some sort)
Q- How to permanently get rid of Messages & Chats
Q- How to permanently remove Dropbox & Public file sharing?
Q- How to permanently remove all sharing options?
Q- Are there other ways to share (codes, commands, etc.) that need be to blocked/fixed/patched? If so, then what are they?
Q- Are computers stalked by IP address? by Network? by computer numbers or codes? or just by traps or their accounts?
Q- Is there a handy, "go to" type of checklist of where to look or what to do when there is a a suspicion of implants in the computer?See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

Has anyone else seen this? Every now and then, one of my Apple apps starts crashing, to the point where the application becomes unusable. A couple of months ago, it was Contacts, which would crash everytime I tried to get address information from anyone in my contact list. I was able to get it working again by doing a restore, but this happened at a really inconvenient time, when I had to look up a number for an important phone call. Today, Mail app stopped working, crashing whenever I tried to write a new email. Not very useful, if you can't send an email. In the past, I have seen the same thing with Safari on my iPad(1), where again, a restore fixed the problem. Does anyone know of a way to prevent this from happening?
Verizon iPhone 4, 16 GB, iOS5.0.1, syncing to an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2 GHz i7, 4 GB RAM, running OS10.7.2).
Thanks,Try clearing memory. While on the Home screen double-press the HOME button. When the quick-launch ribbon comes up at the bottom of the screen hold any app until a "-" appears on all of them, then tap every "-".

My itunes has stopped playing music. I recently downloaded more music and now it has stopped playing, it says it is playing but there is no sound and the time bar does not move from 0. I have uninstalled all apple apps on my laptop and reinstalled and then updated the software. I have tried 'repair' aswell but nothing has worked.
Songs in the itunes store are also not working
