Is SSRS installation and deployment always a hassle ?

I have used many tools from different big corporations such as MS. I have faced small issues here and there in the installation. But, SSRS wins the award for being the most painful. I have been trying to install it on my local system for learning SSRS for
a long time. I have had several issues which were sorted out through google searches. Now, it looks like I have reached a dead end. I am wondering if this tool is even worth using ? Do I really need to hire a $200/hr consultant to install SSRS on my computer
for learning ?

I personally have had no problems installing SQL Server Developer's Edition on my desktop / laptop / tablet over the years for my own learning including SSRS. I've installed versions 2005, 2008, 2008 R2, 2012 and also a community preview of 2014. SQL

If you have problems during your install why not try a complete un-install via control panel then try installing again. A full install from scratch should take around 30 mins.
Another general tip please always logon as administrator when installing / un-installing SQL Server.

Automating Sharepoint Foundation 2013 Installation and Deployment of Project

Hi all,
I'm a long time software developer with absolutely no experience in Sharepoint.
I have just joined a new company and I was asked by the team leader to create an installer for Sharepoint Foundation 2013 and a working Sharepoint solution made by the company, preferably using HTA.
I have experimented installing it manually and deploying the solution, however, what's the best method to automate these two steps?
I was thinking of something like AutoSPInstaller, and after the end of the installation, I would run Add-SPSolution and Install-SPSolution commands for deploying the solution.
What do you think?

So the only problem with SharePoint Foundation is that you cannot script the provisioning of the Search Service, you must use the wizard via Central Admin UI to create it. There is an unsupported workaround, but again, unsupported so I don't use it.
I'd stay away from HTA and go just pure PowerShell prompts, myself though.

Is it possible to use Configuration Manager 2012 (or 2012 R2) to perform remote installation of operating system, applications and patching in a Unix environment?

ConfigMgr does not support Operating System Deployment for non-Windows OS flavors.
You can use the ConfigMgr client on a Unix device to install applications and to instruct the device to install patches. Basically, the client will download files and run a script against them. If there is a patch manager in your flavor of *nix, you
can run a script to install the patches.

Installer and deploying

Hello
I need some information about making installer of build exe file.
My project contain Modbus I/O server library that connected to "GLOFA GM7U PLC" and Communicated correctly.
When i built exe file and installer package did not have any problem.
exe file and installer run correctly in the system that contain installed labview+modules but when i installed the installer package on the other system that did not contain installed labview+modules the deploying did not complete.
I guess the deploying in the installer package is incomplete and installer need more file to install on windows.
I used
- Labview 2011
- Datalogging and supervisory control module
- Databae connectivity toolkit
in windows7

Problem:
Whenever I try to run my LabVIEW Executable that uses the Datalogging and Supervisory Control (DSC) Module and I/O servers, I get an error message when the library deploys that says:
<IP Address>\Library_Name\OPC deployment failed (error: 1550, LabVIEW: (Hex 0x60E) The license for I/O server type is invalid.)
Why do I get this error, and how can I resolve it?
Solution:
This error occurs when trying to run a LabVIEW executable that uses the Datalogging and Supervisory Control (DSC) Module and I/O servers on a computer that doesn’t have the DSC Run-Time System installed. Unlike LabVIEW, the DSC Module requires a separate Run-Time License which allows you to install the Run-Time System on another computer. Once you purchase the license and install the Run-Time System on the target computer, this error should go away. CRYSTAL Reports 2010 for VS 2010 Installation and Deployment issues

On Installing Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010 the Crystal Report Viewer in the Toolbox reports itself as Version 13.0.2000.0. When dragging said viewer onto an ASPX Page it: -
1) Comes up with the wrong version: - Assembly="CrystalDecisions.Web, Version=10.5.3700.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=692fbea5521e1304", NOT 13.0.2000.0!
2) The ADE visualisation of the ASPX Page comes up with the following error: - "Error Creating Control - ContentPlaceHolder1. SessionState can only be used when enableSessionState is set to true. ...............
In my Web.Config file enableSessionState is set to true AND System.Web,SessionStateModule is referenced in <httpModules> the message is therefore less than helpful.
3) Surprisingly when I correct the Version to 13.0.2000.0, the same error happens. Even more surprisingly the page builds and in the development environment the CrystalReportViewer works@#@!! Unfortunately when deployed to a production Web Serrver W2K8 x64 and IIS7.x the page loads but the viewer does not, no errors are caught, the event viewer log is happy. (The click-once Runtimes x32 and x64 have been installed on the server).
The same code works fine in VS2008 targetting CR 2008.
How do I:
1) Get CR2010 for VS2101 Installed Correctly?
2) Deploy The Viewer to a production server?

This is a known issue (unfortunately, no KB created yet as I just duplicated and reported the issue to QA (tracking number; ADAPT01506220) two days ago).
The issue appears only on computers with side by side install of .NET 2008 and .NET 2010.
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
1) Remove the following from the web.config:

2) Open the form that has the viewer on it, go to code behind and replace this:

with:

3) Go to the Properties of the project, select references and remove crystaldecisions.web of version 10.5.3700
4) In the Properties, click the Add button and then the .NET tab and select crystaldecisions.web version 13.0.2000.0
5) Recompile.
Distribute the CRVS2010 runtime.

SSRS - Installation and configuration

Hi ,
Am new to SQL Server and I need to setup SQL Server Repoting services on SQL server cluster where instance is already running.
Version : SQL Server 2008 SP1
I did some research online and found some links and videos on how to do it. My understanding is that I need to Install Reporting services and configure it. This is needed for Sharepoint. Here are the links which am planning to use.

3) As it's a clustered environment, I'm thinking I need to install SSRS on one server but what changes should I make on the second server to recognize this?
4) Can you please share me any more better links to do this on clustered enviornment, which has step-by-step procedure.

1. It based on your requirement, if you want to use the features of SharePoint, you can configure the Reporting Services in SharePoint Integrated mode. Report server modes are mutually exclusive, you can switch a report server from one mode to the other.
2.No. SQL Server Reporting Services is independent SQL Server component which you can installed side by side with SQL Server instance.
3.Report Server service cannot participate in a failover cluster, you can install Reporting Services on a computer that has a SQL Server failover cluster installed and host the report server database on a SQL Server failover cluster. The report server runs
independently of the failover cluster.

Oracle Enterprise Manager Agent deployment (Installation and Configuration) Error

Hello,
I am trying to create an agent on a linux server using Oracle Enterprise Manager 12.1.0.3. The user is created with root privilege on the server, by change /etc/sudoers entry username the same as the root entry. After that I tried to add host target by clicking Setup->Add Target->Add target Manually->Add Host Targets in the Oracle Enterprise Manager.
In the Add Target view: I clicked on add, then I entry host and platform information. After that I click next. Then I provided the Linux x86-64 : Installation Details for
Installation Base Directory, Instance Directory, Name Credential ... then click next. then click Deploy Agent.
In the Add Host Status view: stages Initialization and Remote Prerequisite Check successfully passed, but in the stage Agent Deployment, it failed in the Installation and Configuration phrase of the Agent Deployment stage.
The log content is shown below. There are numerous SEVERE Errors. But I don't have much experience in dealing with these type of problems. I thank you in advance for all the helps.

Archives are missing from the Software Library. Unable to determine the URL for downloading the update. The update might not have come from Oracle Enterprise Manager Store.
For each update with missing archives, emcli import_update can be used with a -force option to re-upload the archives to the Software Library.

On Enterprise Manager server [nsn175-105], we did the following:
1. we modified /etc/exports to include this line: /export *(rw,no_root_squash,sync)
we start nfs service by executing command “service nfs start”.
On Management Agent server (nsn175-89), we verified that we are able to mount /export directory of EM server.
On Management Agent server, we started firefox browser and were able to run successfully https://nsn175-105.us.oracle.com:4904/empbs/genwallet
After making this change, we ran agent deployment again. We encountered the same error as shown above.
“You can fix the software library or you can download the agent bits in offline mode.”
For fixing the software library, select Setup->Provision and Patching->Offline Patching, then select Offline Patching radio button, download: https://updates.oracle.com/download/em_catalog.zip. Next upload this zip file.

We are not sure what agent bits are. Would you please explain this and provide procedure how we can download this?
(Here I have attempted to fix the software library, but I am new to Enterprise Manager and not sure how to interpret this).

Is there anyone at all here who has successfully compiled and deployed an SSRS custom report item in VS2012? Is there a demo out there that actually works in VS2012? Is there anyone who has actually been able to compile and deploy that
apparently obsolete Polygons demo? (Pardon my impatience but I'm running a bit short of time here.)
After much hacking and googling I was able to get Polygons to compile but I still can't deploy it to the toolbox. ('The custom report item type PolygonsDesigner is not installed'). I've modified the RSReportDesigner.config
as instructed but I have no rssrvpolicy.config file on my local machine and
as yet I have no idea if that is necessary for local development.
In order to get it to compile I first added the reference C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\Microsoft.ReportingServices.ProcessingCore.dll to both projects.
To the PolygonsDesigner Project I also added the references:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\Microsoft.ReportDesigner.Controls.dll
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\Microsoft.ReportingServices.Designer.11.0.dll

Exactly what software do you need installed on your local machine in addition to VS2012 in order to create a custom control?

After that I added the alias RSDesigner to it's properties and extern alias RSDesigner; at the top of the PolygonsDesigner.cs file. )
As of now, the top of the PolygonsDesigner.cs is as follows. I don't recall making any other changes to the code. As far as I can remember this is all I did in order to be able to compile the code in VS2012.

Just fixed this myself.
It appears the documentation online is wrong and the sample code is missing a reference to a reporting services dll and an attribute.
What you need to do to get it working in VS2012 is add a reference to: Microsoft.ReportingServices.designer.11.0.dll to the PolygonsDesigner project and then add the following attribute to the PolygonsDesigner class: [ToolboxItem(typeof(Microsoft.ReportDesigner.Shell.CRIToolboxItem))]
I also removed the [System.CLSCompliant(false)] attribute.
You then recompile and place both dlls in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies directory and the PolygonsDesigner.dll into the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS11.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\ReportServer\bin
or what ever is you reporting services path.
You also need to change the Microsoft example for the rereportserver.config file to:

In Reporting Services, we can implement custom rendering extensions to generate reports in expected formats. After doing some research, I am afraid there is no example of JSON Rendering Extension for Reporting Services. Generally, it is difficult to write
a custom rendering extension because it must typically support all possible combinations of report elements and requires that you implement hundreds of classes, interfaces, methods, and properties. Before you decide to create a custom rendering extension,
you should evaluate simpler alternatives:
Customize rendered output by specifying device information settings for existing extensions.
Add custom formatting and presentation features by combining XSL Transformations (XSLT) with the output of the XML rendering format.

and you can install a 64-bit version of Windows 8.1, but you'll need to buy it as a DVD and perform a clean installation. You won't be able to keep any files, settings, or apps when you update from a 32-bit to a 64-bit version.

AxIS GPO, SSRS 2012 and RSClientPrint - Continues to prompt for install

Please help!
We have a prod server running SQL 2008 R2 SSRS and we are able to print SSRS reports fine. I believe RSClientPrint is part of the deployed image.
We now have a test server running SQL2012 SSRS. We have deployed a AxIS GPO which should allow a silent install of the new RSClientPrint for non-administrators. We went the AxIS route as I was told some security patches can require a new print
control so I want to avoid packaging, testing, and deploying updated print controls to thousands of machines.
The problem is that we are still being prompted to install the print control when attempting to print a SSRS report from the test 2012 server.
Has anybody seen this particular issue before? Do I need to make the ssrs server a trusted site?

Per my understanding that when you want to print the report from other server(SSRS 2012), you will got the prompt to install the print control, right?
Generally, each user who wants to use the print feature must download and install the ActiveX control that provides client print functionality. Depending on browser settings, the user may be prompted to install the control, be prevented from installing the
control, or have the control install transparently in the background.
For Microsoft Internet Explorer, settings that affect ActiveX control download and installation are specified through the
ActiveX controls and plug-ins node in the Security Settings page for the Web content zone. The following settings determine whether users can download and run the print control, based on Web zone security preferences:
Download signed ActiveX controls.
Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting.
Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins.
Users who want to use RSClientPrint to perform client-side printing must enable
Download signed ActiveX controls and Script ActiveX control marked safe for scripting for installation purposes, and
Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins for ongoing print operations. The

Issue regarding Thin Installer and driver packages

Hello everybody,
I have recently started to work for a new company and have been tasked with creating a new Windows deployment solution.
My company are using Lenovo desktop and laptop and my installation image use Thin Installer to deploy drivers to our workstations during Windows deployment.
I have been having some difficulties getting everything to work and I want to write about it here to hopefully help someone in the same situation as me and call out for better quality control at Lenovo.
Here are the command line I call to start Thin Installer from the local computer:
START /WAIT thininstaller.exe /CM -search A -action INSTALL -repository \\wds\lenovo -noicon -showprogress -IncludeRebootPackages 1,3,4 -noreboot
Hers the issues I have expirienced:
1. Sometimes packages downloaded with Update Retriever will be set to "Reboot type: Forces a reboot" as default. This causes the Thin Installer to reboot reguardless of the -noreboot switch.
Its possible to change reboot type "Requires a reboot" in Update Retriever and than the updates installs fine.
This causes problem with scripted installs where you cannot have the system reboot "out of order".
Updates should never be default "forces a reboot".
2. On my Thinkcenter e93z (10B8) the Intel Displaydriver (v 9.18.10.3220) wont install because the PnPID is not listed in the XML file. (my PnPID is VEN_8086&DEV_041E&SUBSYS_309C17AA (309D17AA is listed tho)). Manualy editing the XML files to include my PnPID solves the problem.
Lenovo should really have better qualitycontrol here.
3. On a t440s machine i have the Synaptics UltraNav Driver (v. 17.0.12.60) wont install automatically with Thin Installer.
This is because the machine i installed failed the "BIOS test" in the XML file of the update package. I manually edited the XML file and replaced the "BIOS TEST" with one from another update that worked on that system and now everything installs automatically and works fine.
Its possible that Lenovo has detected some kind of problem with my BIOS version and the Synaptics driver but everything seems to work fine for me.
I hope this post will help someone in the future

Thanks for posting your findings. I will investigate and escalate the missing PnP id issue for the Display Driver issue. We absolutely need to avoid these kinds of escapes.
For you ThinInstaller command line I would recommend not using the -showprogress parameter if you are using in a scripted deployment scenario with something like MDT and/or SCCM. These solutions typically will not allow TI to interact with the desktop during deployment which is what -showprogress will cause.
Also, you are telling TI to include packages that will automatically reboot your system (type 1), requires a reboot which can be delayed (type 3), will shutdown the machine automatically (type 4). We have very few type 4 packages anymore; however we definitely have type 1 and type 3. As sclexman mentioned, the -noreboot will only apply to the type 3 packages which leave the execution of the reboot up to TI. So -noreboot tells TI that even if it installs updates of type 3, it should not reboot when finished.
Changing the Reboot Type value in Update Retriever only changes how TI sees the package and does not alter how the package itself executes. So if a package is designed to always automatically reboot, changing it to type 3 in UR will have no affect. We have recently had a display driver released by Intel that will automatically reboot if the driver installer detects that it is upgrading an older version of the driver. In a clean deployment scenario, the automatic reboot will not happen so in this case it is safe to change the type to type 3.
This leads to another point. All of our content that is available through Update Retriever is also intended for consumption by System Update which is the utility aimed at individual consumers to help them keep their drivers up to date. Therefore this becomes our lowest common denominator that we have to support. This leads to situations that may not be ideal for the deployment scenario. If we had an army of resources we might be able to manage all of our content for both consumers and enterprise deployments; in effect doubling our efforts. Unfortunately this is not the case and we are trying to do the best we can.
Regarding the UltraNav update for T440s, I see that the XML has a _BIOS section under the Dependencies. However it is defined such that any BIOS level will work because the first level listed is a wildcard asterisk (*). This BIOS section is actually included for a completely different solution which also uses the XML. It is not intended to control the targeting of the update for System Update or Thin Installer. Perhaps there was a mistake made initially and the XML was released without the * and has since been fixed.

The WebPart works fine in my local server and even on another development testing server. However, once deployed to the live server that has claims authentication it stops working and throws an error that says:
"Client found response content type of 'text/html; charset=utf-8', but expected 'text/xml'.
The request failed with the error message:

Hi Vicky,
Based on the error message, it is related to the service account for reporting service.
If the Report Server service runs under a built-in account such as NetworkService, the Grant database access option in SharePoint Central Administration will not work correctly.
Configure the service account to run under a domain user account as follows:
1. Start the Reporting Services Configuration tool and connect to the report server.
2. On the Service Account page, click Use another account, enter a domain user account, and click Apply.
3. Click Web Service Identity, for Report Server, click New, type an application Restart the Report Server service.

VS 2010 Pro "Other Project Types" / "Setup and Deployment": No items found

Hello,
I have VS 2010 Pro Version 10.0.40219.1 SP1 Rel. I have developed a VB.Net application and would like to deploy it. When I try to add a setup project to the solution, I get "No items found" where a list of project types should be in the "Add New Project"
dialog, "Installed Templates", "Other Project Types", "Setup and Deployment". Shouldn't the Pro version have those templates installed? If so, can I copy them from somewhere? I noticed that "Database" and "Test Projects" also have empty lists. There are lots
of templates available for the various languages.
I tried to modify the VS 2010 installation by adding support for SharePoint, but that did not help. Do I have to uninstall, reboot, and re-install? It's so cumbersome considering that I would need to redo the updates as well.
OS is Win 7 Pro, processor is Intel E8400.

The Setup Project template is located in: Installed Templates >> Other Project Types >> Setup and Deployment >> Visual Studio Installer. Would you please check if the templates exists in this path?
If not, you can follow the steps below to reset your Visual Studio templates:
Please open Windows Explorer, and navigate to <Visual Studio Installation Path>\Common7\IDE
(by default is C:\Program Files \Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE);
Delete the ItemTemplatesCache, ProjectTemplatesCache
folder;
Open Visual Studio Command Prompt (2010) under Start menu -> All Programs -> Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 -> Visual Studio Tools (run it with Administrator privilege: right-click the program -> Run as administrator);
Run the devenv /InstallVSTemplates switch;
Run the devenv /Setup switch.
