Is "Start on Demand" possible?

Hi there,
Can anyone give me a suggestion on how to disable the autorun function of the Oracle 10g Xpress Edition ? Everytime I boot my pc, the oracle database service starts automatically.I want to "start it on demand" to avoid waste of memory when I am not working on the database .I know its not logical for a database, but I installed this XE edition to practice and learn , so I dont want it to run everytime I turn on my pc.
Any suggestion will be appreciated
Cheers
Alper

well yes it is possible...
in windows environment follow following steps...
go to run inside start tab...
write msconfig...
go to services...
just uncheck all oracle boxes...
click ok to apply settings...
restart your system to bring changes into action...
i hope this will work for u..

    Hi:
    I'm sorry for not replying sooner but I have been away from home.  I have found what you asked, I think.  Can I just post it here or should I send it to you privately somehow?  In other words, is there anything in this file which could pose a security risk if someone else sees it.
    This morning, I was finally able to do a scan and then upgraded Sophos at which point I was able to turn on-access scanning back on without doing the things you suggested.  Is this going to keep happening?
    Many thanks,
    Suzanne
    Hello Suzanne,
    Thanks for sending the logs to us, it was very valuable. The error that you (and probably others) are seeing is definitely an issue we've improved and likely fixed in the 9.4 release that is currently in preview. We expect to release this version to everyone at the end of this month, if everything goes to plan.
    If you'd like to install it now, see this posting:
    http://openforum.sophos.com/t5/Sophos-Anti-Virus-for-Mac-Home/Version-9-4-0-Preview-Now-Available/td-p/21401
    Thanks again for your assistance, definitely helped show what went wrong and confirm its one of the issues addressed in the next update.

  • System start is not possible. Grey screen and demand for restart

    After power-on I got a grey screen first, after approx. 15 secondes occurs a message "Restart the system". Unfortunately not more happens if I start the system from the HD. I have installed Mac OS X already new, but altrough the installation was sucessful I got the same result. Additinal I am not able to reject the DVD out of the DVD-drive.

    Hi, tojapa - Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    You are experiencing kernel panics.
    In addition to the troubleshooting possibilities contained in the linked document, I wonder if you have you installed any after-market RAM? (If yes, then take it out and see if that helps.)
    Do you have any peripherals beyond keyboard and mouse attached to this machine?
    Are you able to boot into safe mode, holding down the Shift key immediately after the startup chime? (If you are able to boot into safe mode, you'll be able to eject the DVD.)
    Also, how do you know the reinstallation of the system software was successful? Were you able to start up into the newly installed system?

  • Computer won't boot to windows - Fail in Start-Up Tests - Possible Hardware Issue

    My mate has given me his laptop to try and fix but when i runf the hp start up tests id comes up with this:
    can anyone help?

    Hi,
    Now the image is viewable, it would look like the Hard Drive has failed and will need to be replaced.
    As a further test, if you wish to rule out a possible ( although far less likely ) problem with the sata controller, you try the following.
    1.  Create a bootable Ubuntu CD - a guide on creating an Ubuntu CD and the download can be found Here.
    2.  When created, follow the guide on the link below to Try Ubuntu.
    http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/try-ubuntu-before-you-install
    The 'Try Ubuntu' option runs the OS from the CD without the need to install on your HDD.  If this runs Ok ( it will be slow running from a CD ), this would tend to confirm that the problem is just with the HDD.

  • IBook G3 start-up issues, possible logic board failure?

    For the past few months the screen of my iBook G3 has been skipping and flashing and jumping at random times, quite often. If I move the screen to and fro it usually stops. I assumed this was just a bad connection with the LCD display and have basically ignored it.
    Today, however, my screen froze completely while I was running Safari. Even the finder was frozen so I had to turn off the iBook by holding down the power button. When I restarted, it went through the usual start-up motions but after the grey start-up screen, it went to a blank blue screen. Only the mouse's cursor showed up at this point and nothing else. I was not asked to log in. Nor could I see my desktop.
    I was just now browsing this board and found that the jumping screen issue I've been dealing with may have been logic board failure. Could this new blank blue screen problem also be a symptom of that? Or is it part of an overall hard drive failure?
    The computer is quite old. I bought it in early 2002 and there's only about 2GB of space left on it at this point. So is it possible that the hard drive has crapped out?
    I'm trying to restart right now in safe mode but it's been stuck at the grey start-up screen with rotating dial for about 40 minutes. Don't know what to do and I'm a little distraught at the idea of possibly having lost all of my files.
    Any advice is appreciated. Thank you very much.

    Hi, Christopher. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
    If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
    Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
    If Safe Mode doesn't work, you will need to try repairing the hard drive from your Tiger Install disc.
    Every time you have to do a forced shutdown instead of a normal one, there is a chance of hard drive damage and you should repair the hard drive, either by booting into Safe Mode OR by starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key as the startup chime is ending. Then click 'Next' at the language screen and choose Utilities > Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
    Once you have repaired the hard drive with either Safe Mode or the Install disc's Disk Utility, then start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on the hard drive.
    Here's hoping that a little hard drive maintenance will help. Good luck.

  • Not starting MakBook Pro (possible SSD failure)

    Not starting MakBook Pro with message "com.apple.launchd 1 com.apple.coreservices.appleevents 63 Exit timeout elapsed (1 seconds). Killing". Is there a way to do something at home, or just give it to service?

    I am very new to this. Can I just RMA it with such little fuss? There should be about a month left on the warranty. Do I just ring them up and see what they say? What hardware do I need to purchase if they do not solve my problem? (Things like this never end happily in my experience).
    Surely I could just replace both of the SSDs with a single one? The super raid card should work with just one SSD in it, right? Would I have to buy two? I don't like the idea of relying entirely on MSI allowing me to RMA it, it has to be fixable surely?
    It would be nice to put a single msata SSD into the super raid card and just have one SSD so there's less things to break. Would that work?

  • Bootstrap with Java Web Start: is it possible?

    I'm developing a chat for my university and I want to use Java Web Start. For the application client-side, I've write a class, named URLClientBootstrap.java, put it into a jar file, and my jnlp file refers to it.
    This class does a bootstrap of another class of the server codebase, named AutClient.java and it's correctly throw thanks to JWS. But, if I click on a button, I need to make another bootstrap so, from AutClient.java, I need to bootstrap a class named RegClient.java but this doesn't append.
    Why? I can make only one bootstrap? Or maybe JWS doesn't allow me to start another applet?

    Hi,
    Your concern is legitimate.
    Basically to work with SLD you will not face any problem while creating the Business system but your main intention is to use it in configuration and that is in ID which is a client application and that needs Java Webstart to run on your local machine. Definitely you can create the Business system in SLD but to work with that one you need JavaWebstart
    Java Web Start:
    Using Java Web Start technology, standalone Java software applications can be deployed with a single click over the network. Java Web Start ensures the most current version of the application will be deployed, as well as the correct version of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

  • IPad not starting...possible drool connection

    So, I left the room to get some laundry out of the dryer. My eight year old was with his baby brother. Baby brother started fussing, so eight year old (without my knowledge) put the iPad on the floor for him and walked out of the room when that seemed to calm him down.  When I walked in a couple minutes later, the baby was on top of the iPad--along with his drool.  I picked it up, and wiped it off.  The drool didn't seem to be near any buttons or anywhere that it could have seeped into the unit.  A couple hours later, I picked up my iPad to check my e-mail, and it would not turn on!  It's been hours, now and it still won't turn on!  What should I do?

    Have you tried rebooting the ipad by pressing the home and off button together until the apple appears(about 10 secs) ignore the slider. this does not affect any of the data or settings

  • RT app doesn't start on power-up or re-boot

    Hi Again, Gang:
    This one is stumping me.  I've finished a cRIO application, and am now in the process of getting it ready for distribution.  The RT part of the app runs fine when I upload it from the host PC.  When I set the app to run at startup from NV RAM, it doesn't run.  Well, actually, to make matters worse--it DID run ONCE!  This morning I powered the cRIO, then did other things for a while.  I later looked at the unit and saw the user LED was flashing the sequence that says it's working.
    I've read through the troubleshooting stuff on the web site.  I've FTPd into the box and it looks like it's set up right.  The dip switches are all off.  I've waited for 10 mins to see if comes up after a while.  I've experimented with the FPGA upload settings to see if that's the issue.  (The RT won't get very far if the FPGA doesn't start)  Is it possible that something with the shared variable engine is holding it up?
    I'm about out of ideas.  I really hope that someone can give me some!
    Thanks in advance!

  • Want to Completely Start Over

    Hi,
    This is my first post here. I searched around and couldn't find an exact answer.
    I use Windows XP. I got an iPhone about 2 months ago, and before that I had never used iTunes before.
    I'm a musician and a music lover, so I'm always wanting to transfer music to and from my iPhone. When I first got my phone, I downloaded iTunes and proceeded to create a huge clusterf*ck. It was transferring every single audio file on my computer to my phone, which I do not want to happen.
    I must say that, so far, I've found iTunes incredibly non-intuitive and incredibly confusing.
    Anyway, what I would like to do is completely start over if possible. And I'm not just talking about uninstalling and re-installing iTunes. (I've already done that probably 5 or 6 times for various reasons.)
    I mean that I want to completely restore my iPhone to its factory settings and start completely over with iTunes as if I'd never used it before.
    My biggest complaint is that it's a total, f*cking mess. It searched my entire computer for audio files, and so everything (little sketch recordings of song ideas, etc.) on my PC is showing up in iTunes, which I do not want. I only want the files that are in my "My Music" folder to show up, because those files are neatly organized into folders of albums, etc. As it is now, I have this mess of 283 items in the "song" category in iTunes, and most of them are not songs---they're just scratch recordings or whatever (things I only want on my computer).
    So ... I know there's a way to bring the iPhone back to factory settings. But is there a way to do this with iTunes? I remember that the first time I installed it, it asked me some things like where I wanted to look for audio files and things like that. But now when I reinstall it, it doesn't do that anymore.
    I really hate the iTunes interface, and I've tried several other alternatives. Sharepod seemed perfect, because I would just love a simple drag/drop interface like that. But unfortunately, it won't work properly for me. It won't recognize my photos, my purchased songs, or my voice memos. And it won't work when I try to copy a song from the PC to my phone.
    And, of course, iTunes won't let you copy a song from the phone to your computer (does anyone know why?).
    I just want a way to do both of those things in an easy fashion.
    For the record, here are the alternatives I've tried, and none of them have worked completely for one reason or another:
    Sharepod
    Copytrans Manager (this works well, but it won't let you copy songs from the phone to the computer)
    iFunbox (worked great for me on everything except music)
    Is there a way to completely restart on iTunes as well as my iPhone? If I do this, will I lose the apps I've purchased? Or are they always available to me now from the app store to redownload?
    I know this is much more of a ramble than a question, but I'm so frustrated at this point.

    No one has any ideas on this?
    Thanks

  • Search in start menu don't work, Windows 7, sp1.

    Hi guys!
    I have this really annoying problem with my newly install Win7 pro, sp1.
    The Start Menu Search doesn't work. All I get are 3 files that look like categories (Programs, Control Panel and Files).
    The normal search , in file explorer, works though.
    What I've tried so far:
    I have enabled search in the Start Menu Settings. In Customize Start Menu I have enabled "Search with public folders" and "Search programs and Control Panel".
    I have reset my search indexing several times. I have tried different registry tweaks suggested in forums like these like these:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/cc594db0-dbe8-4255-a259-5c1914318c3d/search-in-start-menu-stopped-working

    Non of these suggestions worked for me. I tried importing the registry keys below as suggested by some posts above:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\{ef87b4cb-f2ce-4785-8658-4ca6c63e38c6}]

    "Theme"="default"
    "MostRelevant"="prop:System.Author;System.Keywords"
    "LayoutType"=dword:00000001

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\{ef87b4cb-f2ce-4785-8658-4ca6c63e38c6}\TopViews\{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}]
    "Name"="NoName"
    "Order"=dword:00000000
    "GroupBy"="System.StartMenu.Group"
    "PrimaryProperty"="System.StartMenu.Group"
    "SortByList"="prop:-System.Search.Rank;-System.DateModified;System.ItemNameDisplay"
    "LogicalViewMode"=dword:00000001
    This also didn't do anything.
    I can't find anything else online that addresses this problem. Now I'm getting a little desperate. I'm no novice when it comes to Windows. I have spoken to seasoned Windows tech support people (not from MS). None of them nor I have ever seen this problem
    before. There is very not much help online. Can anybody please help pointing me in the right direction.
    Cheers

    Hi,
    Anything recorded in the event log? You can check the event viewer.
    Regarding to the index option you mentioned, verify that the Start Menu is in the list of indexing option, then check the selected location under indexed location of start menu
    If possible, I suggest you create a new user account, then copy the old files to the new user profile, please refer to this link

  • Need Best way to start learning Oracle 11g  DBA

    Hi.This is Tejaswi.
    I want to learn Oracle 11g DBA.I've downloaded all software's and Documentation for Orcl 11g R2. Now. i want to start Learning DBA. Can any one suggest me the best way to Start learning DBA?
    Please suggest me the good books For Oracle Architecture and SQL.......

    Hello Tejaswi,
    The advice you got about reading the Oracle Concepts and 2 Day DBA documentation is very good advice.
    I found that knowing some SQL*Plus and SQL Developer was also very helpful as, they both provide a way to interface with the database and try the things you read about. For SQL Plus, I used the book:
    Oracle SQL*Plus: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition
    By Jonathan Gennick
    Publisher : O'Reilly
    ISBN : 0-596-00746-9 I openly recommend it. It is easy to read, the book is very well thought out, it covers what you really need to know (and more too). The author explains the subjects very well. I would definitely learn some SQL Plus and SQL developer before getting into the 2 Day DBA document (make those 2 days about 7 days each if not more).
    To learn SQL, I "sort of" used (I say "sort of" because I only read some parts of it available online and at the local bookstore):
    Oracle SQL by Example
    By Alice Rischert
    Publisher: Prentice Hallit probably has more SQL than you'd need as a DBA but, it is an excellent book you may want to consider.
    If you are starting from scratch, as I did, you'll find that you need to learn multiple things at the same time. I believe SQL Plus is the best place to start, along with possibly the Concepts document. That will give you a base to build upon.
    HTH,
    John.
